PoliticsBoko Haram Leader Shekau Appears In New Video, Says He Is Alive by Franchise21(op): 4:53pm On Oct 02, 2014
Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Islamist militant group
Boko Haram, has appeared in a new propaganda video
dismissing claims of his killing by the Nigerian military.
Abubakar Shekau in a Boko Haram video
In the latest video, just released by the Islamist terrorist group,
Mr. Shekau spoke at length on his reported death in a 36-
minute video. The video was originally obtained by the French
news agency AFP.
The Boko Haram leader said his sect had instituted sharia rule
across areas captured by his fighters in the northeastern parts
of Nigeria. Last month, Boko Haram militants captured several
towns including Gwoza which the group named as its
headquarters.
A Nigerian military source told SaharaReporters moments ago
that Nigerian intelligence agents were yet to study the new
video. He said they could only authenticate the video after a
thorough analysis of the new tape.
The Nigerian and Cameroonian military authorities recently
claimed they had killed Mr. Shekau during a battle in Konduga
near Maiduguri. Even so, SaharaReporters exclusively reported
that the Boko Haram figure who was killed was one Mohammed
Bashir.
Nigerian military officials insisted that Mr. Shekau was a nick
name assumed by Mr. Bashir and several other Islamist
insurgent killed in operations by the Nigerian military.

PoliticsCourt Sentences Three Boko Haram Suspects To 75 Years In Prison by Franchise21(op): 5:04pm On Oct 01, 2014
The Federal High Court in Lagos, Tuesday, sentenced three Boko Haram suspects to a total of 75 years in prison.

Each of the three convicts, who were among the 17 accused earlier charged before the court in November last year, bagged 25 years imprisonment.

Just like the trial, the journalists were barred from covering the judgment.

Even the intervention of Bello Okandeji, Deputy Court Registrar at the Federal High Court, Lagos, did not yield a positive report for the reporters. Armed security officials manning the door told Mr. Okandeji they were following “specific instructions.”

Earlier, Ibrahim Buba, the trial judge, had sought the views of both the prosecution and defence counsels on the legality of delivering the judgment in camera.

At the commencement of trial on December 3, last year, the judge had made an order barring journalists from the proceedings following an application by Ade Ipaye, the Lagos State Attorney-General and prosecuting counsel.

Men of the Department of Security Services (DSS) had prevented journalists from covering the suspects’ arraignment a week earlier.

On Tuesday, Mr. Ipaye reiterated his position, adding that if the trial had been conducted in secret, the judgment also ought to be delivered in secret since it was a part of the proceeding.
The defence lawyer agreed with the prosecution.

The judge told journalists and every other person who was not involved in the proceeding to leave the court room.

The 17 accused who were arraigned before the judge, last year, on an eight count of terrorism and possession of firearms and membership of a proscribed organization include Ali Mohammed, Adamu Karumi, Ibrahim Usman, Bala Haruna, Idris Ali, Mohammed Murtala, Kadiri Mohammed, Mustapha Daura, Abba Duguri, and Sanni Adamu.

Others were Danjuma Yahaya, Musa Audu, Mati Daura, Farouk Haruna, Abdullahi Azeez, Ibrahim Bukar and Zula Diani.

At the end of Tuesday’s judgment, a lawyer who attended the proceedings told journalists that the fourth defendant in the trial was acquitted.
The lawyer pleaded not to be named because he was not authorized to address journalists on the outcome of the trial.

According to the lawyer, the Attorney-General had entered a nolle prosequi (Latin for “do not prosecute”) in respect of two of the defendants, who were then discharged. Later, another 11 were also discharged in the course of the trial following another nolle prosequi by the prosecution.

Only four – the first to fourth defendants – went through a full trial.

The suspects allegedly committed the offences on March 21 last year, at Plot 5, Road 69, Lekki Phase I Housing Estate, and at No. 24, Oyegbeni St., Ijora-Oloye, Apapa-Iganmu, Lagos.
They were alleged to have in their possession three packets of explosive construction pipes, 15 detonators, and 11 AK47 rifles with 30 rounds of live ammunitions.

Other items also alleged to have been found in their possession include 200 rounds of 7.6 mm live ammunition, two suit cases containing explosives, and a water container filled with explosives.

The offences contravened sections 13(2) and 17(b) of the Terrorism Act 2013, as well as sections 1, 8, 27 (1) (a) and (b) of the Firearms (special provisions) Act, Cap F28, Laws of the Federation, 2004, and punishable under Section 8 of the same act.

The lawyer said the discharged fourth defendant was charged with funding terrorism by agreeing to provide money to facilitate the escape of the first defendant from detention.

According to the lawyer, Justice Buba held that the prosecution did not establish the charge against the fourth defendant.

It was learnt that the judge, however, convicted the first to third defendants on all the counts, sentencing them to 25-year jail term each

PoliticsOver 40 Boko Haram Terrorists Killed In Counter Attacks, Nigeria Military Says by Franchise21(op): 10:29am On Sep 28, 2014
The Nigerian military on Saturday said it has further
subdued the extremist Boko Haram sect by killing over 40
of its fighters in three different locations in the North-east
zone.
PRNigeria, an agency that distributes press releases for
Nigeria’s security agencies, quoted military officials as
saying a multi barrel T55 tank, 9 rifles, two machine guns,
two rocket-propelled grenade tubes, five boxes of
ammunition and other weapons were covered from the
terrorists.
Eleven soldiers however died in the attack while 15 others
are receiving treatment for various degrees of injury while
three others are missing.
The military also claimed it has repelled attacks from
splinter cells of the sect in other locations.
The military has in the past two weeks launched an all-out
onslaught on the terrorists, killing many while some of
them reportedly surrendered to troops.
This week, the military claimed it had killed the group’s
leader, popularly known as Abubakar Shekau.
PRNigeria also said that the terrorists have been beaten
back in most communities in Borno State.

Stubborn, dare devil and ready to die
terrorists continued to push against the
military despite receiving heavy
bashing in the last two weeks in North-
Eastern Nigeria.
During the period, many of their top
commanders including the one
pretending to be Shekau were
eliminated. Nonetheless, splinters cells
continued to confront the military in
fierce battle but Nigerian troops
vanguished them although with
casualties on both sides
PRNigeria gathered from top military
sources that despite the progress being
made in efforts to decimate and contain
insurgents, splinter cells of the
terrorists group are still trying to
carry out snap attacks on some
communities. They were however
effectively beaten back in communities
such as Konduga, Beneshek and
Damboa where they made a number of
attempts on Thursday and Friday
September 25-26, 2014.
A multi barrel T55 tank, 9 rifles, two
Machine Guns, two Rocket Propelled
Grenade tubes, five boxes of
ammunition and other weapons were
captured from them while over 40 of
the terrorists died in the encounters in
the three locations.
Troops also conducted a raid on
terrorists’ enclave at Shindig. In all the
operations a total of 11 soldiers died
while 15 others are being treated for
injuries sustained in the battles. Three
are still missing.
Meanwhile, air and land operations are
ongoing to clear the terrorists from
other communities where their
activities have become prevalent
recently in the states under the state of
emergency.

B’ Haram: ATACK Lambasts
Nigerian Military Over Shekau's
Death
ARTICLE | SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 - 11:56AM | BY MU'SODIQ
ADEKUNLE
The Action Team Against Conscription and Kidnap, ATACK,
has berated the Nigerian Military over its claim that the
Leader of the Boko Haram Sect, Abubakar Shekau has
been killed.
The news broke last week that Shekau was killed in a
confrontation as militants moved to attack Maiduguri.
The Nigerian military, through its Spokesperson, Chris
Olukolade however issued an official confirmation to
reports that Shekau, whose death the military has claimed
repeatedly only to turn out untrue, was killed in a fierce
clash with the military last week in Konduga, near
Maiduguri, Borno State.
While the Nigerian military, laid claims to the killing of
Shekau, its Cameroonian counterpart also claimed credit
for it, saying Shekau was killed at Gamboru near the
border, a claim the Nigerian military has rejected.
Reacting to the news, the Convener of ATACK, Mr. Debo
Adeniran noted that the killing of Abubakar Shekau should
not be celebrated because it has not signalled the end of
Boko Haram in the country.
He said, “The killing of Abubakar Shekau does not mean
insurgency will come to an end in the Nigeria. Except the
question that threw up Shekau is addressed, Shekau as a
metaphor, will continue to spring forth. Except the
government address the lopsided distribution of
opportunities and wealth, a Shekau dead today may even
bring up hundreds of Shekaus tomorrow. Shekau is just
one in the entire Boko Haram insurgence. Even if the
Military wipe out the entire B’Haram insurgence and the
political injustice, the economic injustice is not addressed,
B’Haram will continue to fester.
"Even if Shekau is killed now, has the damage not been
done? Why did it have to take them so long to kill the
leader of the group that has been warring against the
federal might? As long as the state is no longer
maintaining the monopoly of violence in a country, it has
lost moral authority to continue to govern.
It is preposterous for the Nigerian Military to claim that
they have killed Shekau long ago without announcing it.
That is a major breakthrough that we are sure the
Nigerian Army would want to celebrate. Why did they
have to wait till Cameroonian soldiers claimed they have
killed Shekau before they claimed the credit?
"All the military chiefs, starting from the Commander-in
Chief of the Armed Forces to the lowest ranking officers
ought to cover their faces in shame and resign rather than
celebrating the death of just a man that had been holding
the country to a ransome. What if it had been a powerful
country that waged external aggression against Nigeria? It
would have crushed us while we were seeking loans and
illegal arms acquisition to prosecute the war. The whole
issue around Shekau only exposed the entrenched
corruption in all facets of Nigeria including the army,
security and intelligence agencies.
"Shekau typifies the situation in Nigeria where a problem
is on the verge of being solved, another overlaps it.
Basically, we have nothing to celebrate in the defeat of
Shekau rather our military hierarchy should cover their
faces in shame that it took them this long to bring down
the leader of the Sect.”
The human rights activist however called for the
rehabilitation of those abducted and conscripted by the
deadly sect.
“All those who have been kidnapped and conscripted by
the Boko Haram elements should be adequately
compensated.
People who lost their properties to the insurgency, those
who lost their loved ones, children who lost their parents
to the insurgency must all be compensated while those
abducted and conscripted by the insurgents are
rehabilitated and reintegrated back into the society,”
Adeniran said.
