Sultan To Northern Governors: No Education, No Development The newly installed chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III yesterday charged the northern states’ governors to wake up to the responsibility of improving the education sector in the region, saying that no country can ever develop without heavy investment in education. In a speech shortly after his investiture as the chancellor of ABU, the Sultan who specifically picked on the 19 northern governors said; “Our state governments, especially here in the north, must begin to realize the enormity of the challenges facing the education sector and take the urgent and necessary steps to arrest these challenges.” He added, “We must as a people acknowledge the basic fact that the reform of the tertiary education sector cannot be effective and complete without putting in place the progressive developments required in the basic and senior secondary education sectors. “It is our believe that with the required political will, planning and determination, we can and will succeed. There is no better investment than building the human capital of our societies and developing the capacity of our people. No country can ever develop without a heavy investment in education.” The Sultan further stated that there is the need to raise the imperative of character building and leadership development in the institutions of higher learning, “Our institutions of higher learning must integrate into their curricula the issue of character building and leadership development.” He said. “We take our pristine values of honesty, hard work, accountability, contentment, equity, tolerance and accommodation very seriously and the higher education sector must ensure that it provides the enabling environment for our future leaders to imbibe these values and live by them. “Our tertiary institution graduates are indeed the greatest assets. We develop them to manage our diplomacy and international relations and expect to hand over to them the full control of our affairs and the destiny of our society” According to him, there is the imperative of addressing adequately and urgently the challenges of quality of tuition and research in our university system, even as he lamented that many laboratories and equipment have been neglected for so long that many have become obsolete. In this circumstance, he said “teachers of science will inadvertently end up in teaching only the history of science. How could we produce the next generation of scientists, engineers and other professional cadres when we don’t provide adequate facilities to train them?” “We cannot provide viable solutions to emerging problems within our society without generational knowledge that could help them address it, the royal further said. “We cannot therefore, by any stretch of imagination, remain indifference to how this vital component of our human capital is prepared to take over the reigns of leadership of the nation. “And it is for this very reason that we can ill-afford our institutions of higher learning becoming a hostile moral environment for the proper development of the younger generation. http://leadership.ng/nga/articles/8874/2011/11/24/sultan_northern_governors_no_education_no_development.html

On November 23, 2011 BY HENRY UMORU Boko Haram bombings could lead to anarchy – Atiku ABUJA—FORMER Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Tuesday, expressed fears that the current security challenges occasioned by bombings from the Boko Haram sect would degenerate into anarchy in the country, if the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, failed to brace up and deal with the issue. Atiku spoke when he received an 11-member peace delegation of ACF led by the former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Ahmed Gusau, noting that there was no part of Nigeria that is not facing security challenges. He said factors that gave rise to the security problems must be tackled for peace to reign, adding that the development of human capital was key to economic development, as nations can achieve development without oil and gas. He cited Japan. Atiku, who reminded the ACF leaders that they could not detach themselves from politics entirely as politics creeps into many issues, said the current consultations by ACF leaders would go a long way to help it find its bearing. Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Gusau and other members of his team, including General Lawrence Onoja, had emphasised the urgent task of halting the current orgy of killings between Muslims and Christians in the North, pointing out that the area would not achieve progress with death and destruction. Among those in the delegation were Sardauna Katsina, former IGP, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie (rtd), Col. Johan Ubah (rtd), Bitrus Gwadah, Baba Bisalla, J. M. Alabi, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim, Fati Ibrahim, Hajiya Halima Alfa and Bukar Zarma. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/boko-haram-bombings-could-lead-to-anarchy-atiku/ |

If truly Jonathan invited them, It's truly a national disgrace! [/quote]How does it becomes a national disgrace ?is it better to allow the BH to continue undermined our national unity ?(if we have one) what will you say about the killing and bombing by BH . The Special Forces, consisting of 10 units from Fort Carson in Colorado, will move into Nigeria through the borders of Chad and Niger Republic. Our sources said the US military gave the Special Forces only 48 hours notice to deploy. That narrow timeline suggests some urgency in the operation.it a good step in the right direction considering the helplessness of those target by BH in the northern part of nigeria. |
Ex-Soldiers Threaten To Blow Up Pipelines Over Pension Arrears , Members of the Nigerian Military Pensioners Welfare Association (NMPWA) in the South-South region have threatened to blow up pipelines and disrupt the peace of the area if the Federal Government refuses to commence the payment of the 53 per cent pension arrears owed them for four years now. In a statement signed by its secretary, Captain Don Pedro, and made available to LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt, the group said the Federal Government was taking the veterans for a ride. It said; “We have been trained in the art of warfare, we have knowledge of combat of any sort, and we can blow oil pipelines in the region and cripple the economy of the nation. We want to say that we can be more deadly than Boko Haram, so we should not be taken for granted.“We were told by the Directorate of Military Pensions around April this year that the arrears would be paid as soon as the budget was approved and at the approval of the budget that the money was being prepared in July for payment nothing was heard since then. “This is the height of inconsistency by a nation that we invested our youths in, if crop of leaders were not around when we fought for the unity of this country, at least some of the senators, traditional rulers and opinion leaders were around then” http://leadership.ng/nga/articles/8483/2011/11/18/ex-soldiers_threaten_blow_pipelines_over_pension_arrears.html

ABUJA — THE Senate, Thursday, directed the Federal Government to carry out a reorganisation of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, just as Senators lamented that the scheme was no longer fulfilling its mandate of entrenching national unity. The directive was upon the consideration of a motion sponsored by Senator Sahabi Yau and 33 others. Senator Yau, while moving the motion, decried the subjection of Corps members to harsh conditions including poor pays and rejections by government organisations, which contradicts the purpose of the scheme. He said: “This noble national programme has recently been buffeted by sundry challenges, including attacks on some of them. These heinous attacks on these youths are compounded by organisations that serially and unjustifiably reject them from undertaking their primary assignment under them.” Before ruling on the motion, Senate President, David Mark lamenting that the Scheme has lost coordination, criticized prospective corps members who influence their postings to towns. He added that such practice has led to the overcrowding of towns, thereby making most of the corps members redundant without place of primary assignments. He said, “There are many corps members who will go and get posting letters without their parents. We are running into series of problems because of this and I believe that that the NYSC at the moment is bedeviled with lack of proper coordination. “We need to go back to the drawing board and reorganize NYSC in such a way that it original intention of bringing national unity is achieved.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/senate-seeks-review-of-nysc-scheme/

Lay Down Your Arms, We’ll Be Merciful, Jonathan Tells Boko Haram ABUJA — IN apparent response to calls for amnesty for the deadly Boko Haram, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, stated that government was prepared to reintegrate and rehabilitate those who took arms against the state provided they lay down their arms. The President who renewed earlier calls on those who chose to live on the fringes of the law to retrace their steps as government is prepared to work with them to facilitate their reintegration and rehabilitation, however, warned that they should also be prepared to face the wrath of the state should they fail to lay down their arms.Jonathan spoke while inaugurating the re-constituted Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, PACPM, chaired by the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Mohammed Bello Adoke, who was represented by a member of the committee, Mr Tunji Abayomi Said he: “W e intend to always provide a window of opportunity for those who have seen the folly in anti social behaviours to retrace their steps. I wish to renew my calls to those that chose to live on the fringes of the law to retrace their steps and we are prepared to work with you to facilitate your reintegration and rehabilitation. If you undermine the state, be prepared to face the full wrath of the law. “Our review of processes and institutional reforms are indeed designed to strengthen and realign all the instruments and agencies of crime prevention and punishment. My administration will not rest on its oars until the spirit of the law runs across the land. I promise to deliver sudden justice for criminal elements.” He warned that “today our character or reputation as caring and forgiving people are under severe test by frequent acts of mindless brigandage fanaticism which has resulted in the killing and maiming of hundreds of our citizens including those engaged in the noble acts of serving their fatherland. “We now confront evil of nation that is unacceptable to all religions and our culture and our sense of humanity but I know that this nation is resilient and the people are strong and refuse to buy into acts of destruction which agents of violence are promoting. We shall fight and defeat the evil.”He, therefore, tasked the committee in making recommendation to assess every case strictly on its own merit, stressing: “We will not exercise the prerogative of mercy on a quota basis or in defence to the consideration of religion, geography, ethnicity or politics.” “Let me seize this opportunity to therefore reassure the nation that I have initiated a very rapid and robust process to enhance the capacity of our security forces to protect life and property. Even as I mentioned security scare, I am confident in the ability of our security agencies to overcome the present one. we are resolute in our charge to security agencies to go after all promoters of terror and other anti social activities and bring them to book”, he said. “The pervasive assumption is that the Nigerian penal system is punitive and that every encounter with the law may be permanent exit from decent society. We need to place emphasis on our penal system being more correctional, we need to create opportunities for convicted persons either after completing their terms or before they do so considering the circumstances to be reintegrated back into the society and be rehabilitated. Perhaps we can achieve a lot more by making the justice system a bit more redemptive. In doing this, we also need to pay particular attention to human rights especially where there is ample evidence of abuse”. Besides, he said “at times, this decision involves matters of life or death of citizens, it calls for the highest level of decorum and ethics and utmost fidelity to good consciences and public good. It is will not in any way detract us from our duty to protect the life and property of all citizens and safeguard the Nigerian state against any form of violation”. According to him, “I also want to reassure those out people who have lost their relatives to these crimes that we shall bring the perpetrators to book. We share in your pain, we stand united as we confront the actions of misguided few who seems determined to violate the core values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence”, he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/lay-down-your-arms-we’ll-be-merciful-jonathan-tells-boko-haram/ |
Ihejirika, who described terrorism as a complex problem that required special measures to tackle, declined to reveal the number of suspects arrested or killed during the confrontation with security agents.some are killed ,so hope those still breathing will reveal the names of their sponsor ! |
November 15, 2011 - 4:00am . By Ibrahim Bello The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has revealed that most of those allegedly involved in the recent bomb attacks in Borno and Yobe had been arrested. On November 4, multiple bomb blasts occurred in two cities in Yobe State; Damaturu and Potiskum, and in Maiduguri, Borno State. Over 150 lives were allegedly lost in the incident, responsibility for which was claimed by Islamist sect, Boko Haram. “The threat to installations and institutions of government have been on for quite some time, but the intelligence community has done a tremendous job as culprits have either been arrested or killed,” The Chief of Army Staff said. Ihejirika, who described terrorism as a complex problem that required special measures to tackle, declined to reveal the number of suspects arrested or killed during the confrontation with security agents. Pointing out that it was the responsibility of all the security bodies to secure the nation’s territorial borders, he said there was the need for increased collaborative effort between the military, the Nigerian Immigration Service and Nigerian Customs Service. He attributed the scale of violence in the country to the numerous social, economic and political issues that needed the attention of everyone to be overcome. “The military is however playing its role of dealing with the situation and I assure you we are going to overcome it soon,”Ihejirika said. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/most-borno-and-yobe-bombers-have-been-arrested-%E2%80%93chief-army-staff
