PoliticsBreaking News :boko Haram Sets Conditions For Ceasefire by francisj(op): 6:57pm On Mar 14, 2012
Nigeria: Boko Haram Picks Datti Ahmed as Mediator
BY BAYO OLADEJI, MUAZU ABARI, MIDAT JOSEPH, AND SALISU IBRAHIM, 14 MARCH 2012

After years of frequent bomb attacks on security formations, religious houses and killings of innocent citizens within the northern states, the Boko Haram sect has agreed to cease fire on two conditions.
The group has named the president of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, Sheik Ahmed Datti, as their mediator. It said the choice of Datti was based on the fact that its former leader, the late Mohammed Yusuf, served as a member that represented Borno State in the council of Sharia in Nigeria, the cleric could be trusted not to betray the confidence reposed in him to speak for the sect, a source close to the group told LEADERSHIP yesterday.
The source added that the group was ever ready to stop the bombings in the next four weeks only if the federal government would release all its arrested members as well as guarantee the security and safety of all members whose names would be given to the federal government through Datti.
The source said, "What the sect is asking the federal government now is to give them the assurance that once they come to the public after the hostilities, their safety and security would be guaranteed.
up to move around the country to monitor the conduct of troops on civil duty.
On the use of army uniforms by Boko Haram bombers for easy passage in their bombing campaigns, the chief of army staff said the problem has existed for long and called for a law that would outlaw its use by unauthorized persons.
This, he said, is more so as the army has no control over how they come into the country, especially with the porous nature of the country's borders. While describing last Sunday's Jos incident as unfortunate, he said all officers have been directed to subject themselves to searches. He called on prominent citizens to cooperate with soldiers by doing likewise.
He listed areas that require transformation to include change of attitude, de-politicization to professionalism, and modernization with a purpose, change of ideas rather than just modernization and adaptation to changing security environment.

A drama occurred at one of the first generation banks in Akure, Ondo State capital, when a lady, simply identified as Sade, bathed a cashier (names withheld) with faeces inside the banking hall for allegedly snatching her husband.

Customers and fellow bankers took to their heels as the assailant rained abuses after pouring the smelly substance on the lady banker.

The ugly incident, which occurred on Friday, was quickly brought under control by security operatives attached to the bank.

Sade, who pretended to be one of the customers, was said to have arrived the bank with a polythene bag and approached the cashier only to pour its contents on her.

The stench took over the banking hall just as all the customers ran to the door to escape the odour.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the cashier was equally assaulted by the lady before she was bundled out by the bank guards.

The management of the bank, after the ugly incident, arranged for the cashier to bath and change her clothes within the bank premises.

One of the bankers told Sunday Vanguard: “All of us, including my colleague who was assaulted, were busy attending to customers when the young lady came in and started raining abusive words on the victim, in an embarrassing way. She called her unprintable names and accused her of snatching her husband.

“We were shocked and we tried to shout her down only for her to open a polythene bag she carried, thinking that she wanted to make some deposit but what she brought out shocked everybody.

“She removed the bag containing the terribly smelly faeces which she instantly poured on her victim”.

The police public relations officer at the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, said the suspect had been arrested and detained by the police.

Adeniran, said, “The incident happened around noon on Friday and the suspect, who is already with us, came to Akure from Owo with a can containing smelly faeces which she poured on the banker.

PoliticsBoko Haram: We Won’t Accept Any More Excuses, Fg Tells Police by francisj(op): 5:52pm On Feb 18, 2012
On February 18, 2012
By DANIEL IDONOR, Abuja

The Federal Government yesterday warned that it would no longer accept any excuse by the police over its inability to deal decisively with the Boko Haram Islamic’s incessant bombings which have led to the killing of about 2,000 innocent citizens in the country.

Vice President Namadi Sambo made this known while inaugurating the Presidential Committee on Police Re-Organisation in Abuja.
“Government will no longer tolerate indolence and lack of capacity as excuses for non performance,” Sambo warned, lamenting the current state of the Nigeria Police Force and the loss of confidence by the Nigerian public on the Force.

He then asked the police high command to rise up to the challenges by familiarising itself with the new tactics of Boko Haram, as government would ensure that the problems of terrorism was a thing of the past in the country.

According to Sambo, the police must brace up to the “ever increasing tactics and antics of criminals in our society,” as “a time has come when the whole Force should be re-examined and re-organised for efficiency and effectiveness.”

On the re-organisation committee, Sambo said it was set up to “primarily address the rot in the police and reposition it to face the challenges of democratic society through the timely prevention and detection of crimes in all its ramifications.”

He also asked the members of the committee to bring their experiences to bear as they set out to discharge their onerous assignment for the nation.

Responding the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Parry Osayande, lamented that there was no time in the nation’s history that the Nigeria Police Force had suffered the kind of indignity as was currently being witnessed.

Osayande, who is also the chairman, Police Service Commission, maintained that recent events in the country had shown that the police had failed woefully in discharging its duties. He however, pledged that the members would discharge their responsibilities diligently with a view to restoring the lost glory of the Nigeria Police.

He also promised that they would re-position the police to become an efficient, polite and a civil outfit that would sustain and meet the challenges of a democratic society.

Other members of the committee include two retired Assistant Inspector Generals of Police, Casmir Akagbosu and Bashir Albasu respectively, Maj. Gen. S N. Chikwe rtd, Prof. S. D. Mukoro, Dr. Fabian Ajogwu, SAN, Hajiya Aisha Larai Tukur, Alhaji Abdullahi Yola and Esther G. Garba who would serve as secretary to the committee.

Third term: Blame Rice not me, Atiku tells Obasanjo – Daily Trust
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo should defend himself against the allegation of lobbying the former George Bush administration to support his unpopular third term ambition in 2006 which was contained in the recently published memoirs of former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar said yesterday.

Atiku was speaking against the backdrop of Obasanjo’s remarks in a national daily where he said the former vice president destroyed his own chance of succeeding him in 2007 because he (Atiku) is unreliable and that he lacks the vision, orientation and experience to step into his shoes.

Obasanjo foisted unhealthy Yar’Adua on Nigerians as punishment – Atiku
ON NOVEMBER 29, 2011 • IN NEWS
By Emmanuel Aziken & Henry Umoru
ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a blistering attack on former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of deliberately foisting an unhealthy Umaru Yar‘Adua on the country as a punishment for the rejection of the third term constitution amendment in 2006.

Atiku who also accused Obasanjo of seeking to be Nigeria’s version of Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe cited the memoirs of erstwhile United States Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, as evidence that Obasanjo lobbied for the third term constitution amendment among world leaders.

The attack from Atiku followed a newspaper interview where Obasanjo was alleged to have described Atiku as incompetent, unworthy of the presidency and untruthful.

My problems with OBJ
Rebuffing the allegations by former President Obasanjo, Atiku in a statement from his media office in Abuja, yesterday, said his major problems with the former President arose from his opposition to his third term plan.
Atiku in the statement narrated how Obasanjo allegedly sent two cabinet members of the regime to him to deliberate on a draft constitution.

Curiously, Atiku said, the draft was silent on term limit, which made him to smell a rat and that his courage to confront Obasanjo over this controversial plan was the beginning of his troubles with his former boss and the subsequent plots to frustrate his ambition to become President.
Noting that Obasanjo did not have an original succession plan contrary to the claim that he had initially groomed him, Atiku denied the claim, saying the former President was forced into a “last minute succession by bringing a medically challenged late Umaru Yar’Adua to succeed him as a means of punishing Nigerians for rejecting his life Presidency ambition.”
Praises past leaders
Atiku praised Nigeria’s past leaders including General Yakubu Gowon, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Ibrahim Babangida, Ernest Shonekan, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, statesmen, legislators, past Chief Justices and the media for coming together to pull Nigeria from the brink and ensuring an orderly succession to the Presidency by the then Vice President, Dr. Jonathan Goodluck.
“Without this, Nigeria would have been plunged into yet another major crisis arising from the actions of one man,” Atiku said.
On the allegations of inexperience, incompetence and unreliability made against him by Obasanjo, Atiku said Obasanjo was the last person to lecture any Nigerian on reliability. The Rice’s memoirs
Atiku also referred to the memoirs of former US Secretary of State, Rice, “No Higher Honour” where she reportedly made reference to Obasanjo’s alleged plans for a third term.
“In 2006 when President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria sidled up to President Bush and suggested that he (Obasanjo) might change the constitution so that he could serve a third term, President Bush told him not to do it. In Bush’s words: ‘You have served your country well. Now turn over power and become a statesman,” she was quoted as saying.
Atiku also dismissed as preposterous the allegation against him by Obasanjo that he is inexperienced. He challenged Obasanjo to disclose any responsibility or task that he assigned to him while in office, which he didn’t discharge competently. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/obasanjo-foisted-unhealthy-yar%E2%80%99adua-on-nigerians-as-punishment-atiku/

, We are on revenge mission, Boko Haram suspect tells court
On November 25, 2011 • In News ,

ABUJA — Apprehended king-pin of the Boko Haram sect in Niger State, Ahmed Hassan Ezimakor, yesterday, told a Federal High Court in Abuja that the sect would not relent in its terrorist activities until it is satisfied that the death of its former leader, Mohammed Yusuf, is dully avenged.

The suspect, who appeared in court as a prosecution witness in the trial of six other members of the sect, maintained that though their ex-leader, Yusuf, before his death in 2009, taught them against the use of violence as a means of driving home their demand for the entrenchment of the Sharia law in the Northern part of the country, however, the group resorted to bombing following the gruesome murder of their leader in 2009.

Nineteen suspected members of the Ahlan Sunnah Lid Da'waati wal Jihad Yaanaa brothers, also known as Boko Haram arraingned at the Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.
While identifying the six accused persons, Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adam and Umar Ibrahim, as staunch believers in the ideology that Boko (Western Education) is Haram (Evil), the witness, said they were trained in an uncompleted building at Madalla market in Niger State by one Mallam Bashir Madalla on how to use several kinds of weapons including AK-47.

He stressed that their tutor specifically mandated them to avenge the death of their sect members who were killed in Bauchi, Borno and Yobe states.

A second witness, Mohammed Dalhat Zimbo, who was a miner in Azara town in Nasarawa State before he joined the sect, narrated before the court how he procured the detonators that were subsequently used in bombing the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the eve of the presidential election, and the All Christian Fellowship Center, both in Suleja, Niger State, saying he had no prior knowledge that it would be used for that purpose. He particularly fingered the 1st accused person, Shuaibu Abubakar, as the person he handed both the detonators and cortex wires that were used by the sect in setting-off the bombs.

He said: “The first time I asked Shuaibu to tell me what the materials were used for, he told me it was meant for some work their boss was doing in Kano. The next time I asked, he told me he would tell me at a later date. The last time I asked, he told me I should learn not to talk too much in the midst of people. I didn’t ask him again.”

Further hearing on the matter was adjourned till today.
