Boko Haram injures 3 soldiers, 1 civilian

ON OCTOBER 11, 2011 • IN NEWS
By NDAHI MARAMA

MAIDUGURI- A bomb explosion, Monday, occurred in Dala Alamdari Ward in Maiduguri, injuring in the process three members of the Joint Task Force, JTF, and a civilian.
The incident happened at 9:15a.m. in Dala Alamdari, one of the volatile areas where many members of the sect live in the metropolis.
JTF spokesman, Lt-Col. Hassan Ifijeh, told newsmen in Maiduguri that “Some persons planted an IED near a high tension electricity pole in Dala. They detonated the device when our vehicle was passing. The explosion resulted in crisis as the entire area was engulfed by fire.”
He said the explosion also led to damage to some private cars.
Ifijeh said: “The incident happened near a roadside petrol hawker. The vibration and the sound of the explosion ignited the petrol in the jerry cans. Some private cars inside a nearby mechanic shop were also affected by the inferno.”
He said, however, that the injured had been rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for medical attention adding that “The JTF has also commenced investigations into the blast.”
He said a number of suspects were arrested in connection with the blast but declined to give further details.
Some residents, however, faulted the JTF claim on the destruction of private cars, saying it was men in uniform who set the cars ablaze and not petrol from a hawker.
Mr Simon Templer, a resident, said: “I was about leaving my house to my shop when I heard the explosion. I knew that it was a sign of danger. But before I could do anything I began to hear sound of gun shots everywhere.”
Templer added that the soldiers were shooting sporadically after the blast.
But JTF spokesman insisted that there was no casualty as a result of the blast.
“Nobody died. Only three soldiers and one civilian got injured. I was there and I saw things myself.”

PoliticsBoko Haram’s Zero Tolerance Marks The Beginning Of Its End by francisj(op): 7:37am On Oct 07, 2011
Boko Haram’s zero tolerance marks the beginning of its end.

Boko Haram has vowed to fight on. Its aim is among others: to impose strict Islamic laws on the whole country and fight to subdue the infidels. We have been asking who this group is and what it wants. Now their evasive spokesman Abu Qaqa has told us. Imposing Islamic laws on all Nigeria amounts to Islamizing the country and that reflects exactly the fear of its opponents.
Next, their understanding of the word, ‘infidel’ should be explained because, Nigeria is a multi-religious country and worshiping Christians are no infidels. If it however means that they are, then it has pressed the wrong button. Both positions are on the extreme and it’s left to see how they will come good.
Already, there are responses and interpretations. The Niger Delta Liberation Force (NDLF) has accused Boko of plotting to destabilize the government of their son, Jonathan and has offered to provide him with informal security outfit at the slightest notice. The Egbesu Mightier Fraternity, also called the ‘Water Lions’ has threatened to chase out all Muslims out of the Niger Delta when next Christians are killed in the North. It wondered why Boko, rather than focus on developmental needs preferred the elusive goals which it’s pursuing destructively. The other big two in the East and West are presently watching on the sidelines and waiting for the least opportunity to organize. Right there in the North, a deadly if not deadlier Christian militia, the ‘Akhwat Akwop’ is getting ready to rout Boko under its, ‘Advanced Homeland Security and Mountaineering Agency’. The rush to join is so dare that enthusiasts even pay. These are single formations for now. As the threat continues, there could be a coming together and Boko could really get a knock of steel. Is this where this sect is taking Nigeria to?
The federal government is intervening to stop this development but with what success?
Recently, it constituted a Presidential Committee on Security Challenges in the Northeast Zone under the chairmanship of Ambassador Galtimari. The Galtimari report has been criticized in various quarters for being soft on Boko by providing it a face-saving window. For instance, it recommended the grant of amnesty to Boko members who surrender and much more, that the FG should dialogue with them. But people have been questioning the reason behind this generous overture considering the wickedness of the sect. Yet, Boko rejected their recommendation. Their reason: they weren’t consulted; but who is the ‘they’ and where is it? The other: the inclusion of the Sultan of Sokoto and some emirs in the northeast who they describe as the agents of government isn’t acceptable.
The direct interpretation is, the thrive of this group marks the end of the northern elite and tradition as we know them today and apart from being anti-government, it is anti other religions and perhaps too, anti other people. So we have an extremely extremist group that detaches reason and conscience from its actions. To them, bomb is reason, destruction is success.
Therefore, to see Boko as a hidden northern agendum may be an improper generalization, but the north has to rise to isolate it effectively. The youth, women, rulers and opinion leaders have to rise in unison against this group because they themselves aren’t safe. This is what will make the rest of Nigeria stop pointing fingers and flagging suspicion recklessly.
The report of the Presidential Committee made many useful recommendations that go beyond Boko. For instance, the evolving of structures to attend to national issues away from the hit-and-run tactic of the past which this column had often criticized; the implementation of earlier Presidential Committee reports cobwebbed in various locations within the power circle. These will take us somewhere. But to think that amnesty will stop Boko is naive. Perhaps, that’s why many have criticized it. But it is at least, a filtration mechanism. The hungry and misguided will quit Boko leaving the extremists behind and that will make response more manageable and impactful.
The suspicion too that Boko is a 2015 agendum of the north may be accidentally credible to the extent that the sect is not effectively isolated and dealt with. The appeasement policy of the past may have fuelled this. You make trouble, FG comes and gives you what you want, so why wouldn’t others, goes the thinking. This is why the FG has to be careful this time around. You don’t reward evil. Since Boko is dangerous to everybody, rejecting all meaningful overtures in preference for extremism, it’s not likely to keep its grounds and friends for too long, meaning, it’s on its way out.

Boko Haram: Police Bar Fans From Eagles’ Training

For fear of attack on the players of the Nigeria national team, Police yesterday condoned the Abuja National Stadium arena and made sure fans who trooped in to watch the team’s training did so from afar. But there were scuffles with the teeming crowd at the training session. The police made sure they never got too close for comfort and only allowed them watch through the barbed wires that demarcates the training pitch from the main road that leads to the airport. The crowd after protesting vehemently, the police only obliged but let them stay to watch but from afar. The police say they fear the Boko Haram menace and need to take precautionary measures. They positioned some officers on the road to watch the crowd who had doubled by the time the situation had calmed. At the training session, emphasis was on goals scoring, set pieces, tactics and strategies. Yesterday’s training experienced less of physical drills since the agenda of the technical crew centred on goals. Prolific players in yesterday’s training include IK Uche and Osaze Odemwingie while Chigozie Agbim was the most outstanding keeper.

Defiant Muttallab calls US ‘a cancer’
ON OCTOBER 4, 2011 • IN NEWS
DETROIT — THE trial of a 24 year old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, accused of trying to blow up a Detroit bound flight on Christmas Day in 2009 commenced yesterday on a dramatic note as a defiant Abdulmutallab shouted “Sheik Anwar is alive! We will wipe out the US … we will defend Muhammad!” and called the United States a “cancer” just before jury selection began in his trial.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, whose attempted bombing led to a further tightening of U.S. aviation security, also blurted out “Anwar is alive” – an apparent reference to al Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki who was linked to the defendant and killed by a U.S. drone attack in Yemen last week.
Abdulmutallab, is charged with attempting to detonate explosives sewn into his underpants as Northwest Flight 253 approached Detroit from Amsterdam. The device malfunctioned and burned Abdulmutallab, who was then overpowered by other passengers. He faces life in prison if convicted.
After his outburst, US District Judge Nancy Edmunds urged Abdulmutallab to change out of his prison-issued T-shirt into something that would make him more presentable to potential jurors.
The accused terrorist said he wanted to wear his shirt and Yemeni belt with a dagger, but Edmunds said she would not allow a dagger in her courtroom. He was taken out of court to change and came back wearing a very long shirt that went to his ankles with a black jacket over it and skullcap.

In a court appearance last month, Abdulmutallab repeatedly disrupted court proceedings yelling phrases including “Osama is alive,” in reference to slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, and propping his feet on the defense table.
Abdulmutallab, who has no formal legal training, has decided to act as his own attorney in defending against charges that could lead to a life sentence. He has indicated that he wants to address the jury directly, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The federal trial in Detroit, which is expected to last several weeks, began with jury selection Tuesday morning. A few of the prospective jurors were excused after questioning, including a former Detroit cop who said he probably would have difficulty being fair and a saleswoman who said her opinion is that the defendant is guilty.
“He tried to kill 300 innocent people,” the potential juror said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “I just feel he’s very guilty.”
Abdulmutallab, a fluent English speaker who has said he wants to represent himself at the trial, was dressed in an oversized white T_shirt and sat quietly at his defense table as court was called to order.
When the court reconvened a few minutes later, Abdulmutallab was dressed in a black jacket with thin pinstripes over a tan_colored robe and baggy pants. He also was wearing a black skull cap.
Awlaki, a U.S-born Muslim cleric of Yemeni descent, was identified by U.S. intelligence as “chief of external operations” for al Qaeda’s branch in Yemen.
Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for the botched airliner attack. The attempted bombing was also praised by Osama bin Laden in 2010, months before he was killed in a U.S. commando raid in Pakistan.
Last month, Abdulmutallab muttered “Osama’s alive” to spectators as he was brought in for a hearing. He also mumbled “jihad” when the judge used the phrase “al Qaeda” as she read the charges against him.
Appointment of jurors
The first potential juror, a former Detroit police officer, was quickly dismissed. When Edmunds asked the second, a secretary in the auto industry, if she thought she could withhold judgment unless the government established Abdulmutallab’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, she said, “I don’t think so.
“He tried to kill 300 innocent people … I feel he’s very guilty.”
Edmunds said final jury selection -12 jurors and four alternates – would take place Thursday afternoon. By midday, nine women and two men had made the preliminary grade and four had been excused. The judge, the attorneys – and at one point, Abdulmutallab himself – quizzed most of the potential jurors on the answer they gave to one question on the preliminary questionnaire: “If you are selected to serve as a juror on the case, would you be concerned about reactions to the verdict by anyone?”
Abdulmutallab asked one juror if she agreed that an angry reaction could be triggered by a not guilty verdict as well as a guilty verdict. She agreed, and neither side dismissed her from the pool.

Boko Haram activities negate Islamic religion – scholar

Osogbo – A Lagos-based Islamic scholar, Abdul’liadi Ishola, said on Sunday in Osogbo that the activities of the Boko Haram sect negated Islamic doctrine.
Ishola said this while delivering a lecture on the topic “Islamaphobia: Challenge of Modern Time“, organised by the Muslim Congress, Osogbo branch.
Ishola described members of the sect and their sponsors as enemies of God and human race, saying that killing innocent souls and bombing public places were not in accordance Islamic teachings.
He decried the idea of equating the behaviour of the Boko Haram members with that of Muslim faithful.
the criminals called Boko Haram are ignorant of Islamic teachings; they know nothing about the religion; in fact, they lack understanding of Islam.
“We have Muslim faithful among scores of people who have been killed by these hoodlums; yet they are claiming to be followers of Prophet Muhammad,” Ishola observed.
He attributed the rising spate of violence and other criminal acts in Nigeria to the ineffectiveness of the security agents and urged the government to ensure the protection of all Nigerians.
The scholar further charged all Muslim faithful to be focused and live by example for other people to emulate.
Live peacefully with your neighbours and try as much as possible to present Islam correctly through your good disposition.
“Study and understand the religion, proclaim it, abide by its teachings, practise it and avoid chaos and other acts that can tarnish your image,” Ishola admonished his listeners.
Another guest lecturer, Alhaji Musa Babalola, a banker, who spoke on Islamic Banking, allayed fears over the planned introduction of the banking system by the CBN, saying that it was not intended to introduce Sharia nationwide, as being alleged.
According to Babalola, all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious affiliation, would benefit from the facilities of the banking system.
He explained that Islamic banking was a non-interest banking system for every Nigerian who had genuine business or useful project that would benefit other people.
He called on all Nigerians to support its introduction, adding that it would go a long way in boosting the nation’s economy, when introduced.
The hundreds of Muslim faithful across the state and beyond attended the 2011 Special Annual Lecture of the congress

PM , Armed Cameroon protestors ask President Paul Biya to go
On September 30, 2011 • In News ,

YAOUNDE (AFP) – Armed men dressed as soldiers fired into the air and stopped traffic in south Cameroon on Thursday, demanding the departure of long-serving President Paul Biya ahead of a controversial poll, reports said. The men fired their weapons at the main bridge in Douala, the economic capital of the west African nation that will hold a presidential election on October 9, according to media reports and law enforcement sources. Cameroon Radio-Television (CRTV) described them as members of an unidentified armed group which held up traffic on Wouri Bridge for two hours. A local official and other sources said just one man was responsible however.
The governor of Littoral province, Fai Yengo Francis, said in a statement: “At about 6:00 am (0500 GMT) an unidentified individual, armed and dressed in military uniform, disrupted traffic on Wouri bridge.
“Thanks to the swift reaction of public order forces, under the supervision of the administrative authorities, the assailant was pushed back and traffic resumed.”
The governor said there were no casualties and reassured locals that efforts were being made to track down the gunman. An unnamed taxi driver said: “I saw an armed soldier on the bridge. He had blocked the traffic and was asking people not to pass. He had a placard which I saw with ‘Paul Biya dictator’”.
CRTV meanwhile reported exchanges of fire between a group of men and the defence forces, “which forced the defeated assailants into the water,” the station said.
The outburst comes as tension builds in the country ahead of the elections which 78-year-old Biya, in power since 1982 and one of Africa’s longest-standing heads of state, plans to contest.
On Tuesday the country’s main opposition party, the Social Democratic Front, (SDF) denounced what it said were irregularities in the organisation of the poll.
“There is a whole mountain of irregularities,” Evariste Fopoussi, the SDF’s pointman during the campaign, told AFP, citing double entries or missing names in electoral rolls as well as delays in preparation.
Civil society movements accuse Biya of having locked down the electoral system to ensure that he is returned to power. Cameroon’s Supreme Court has validated 23 candidates for the presidency, including Biya and John Fru Ndi, the veteran opposition candidate of the SDF.
