Let me give you a scenario. A Black American wants to reach out to Africa, That AA finds this web-site and is very, very excited. The AA browses through the threads to find a interesting topic. What does she/he find, loads of degrading/hateful threads about AA, then we see how great whites are almost to the point of worship. It is so sickening and disgusting. So alot will make degrading threads in retaliation or will leave and find a more welcoming website.

I try to tell them this. They dont understand how we are their elders. They had fantasies that we would welcome them. When our parents came to America, our grandparents wanted education, didnt want no civil rights talks o. This caused friction. The next wave, they resented us. This is my oddball assessment: if you travel and prefer land there, it is implied that you think they (americans) are better - why else would we move here in droves, me included? It sends a message. So although he is a full fledged imo sell out, we are all selling out if we are here instead of making our way to nigeria. We cant pick and choose imo who we think is so much more African, when many of us arent even in Africa, and some have said to me - explicitly that they have no intentions of going back.

Sure, Im Igbo. I try to hold onto my culture, but we are just as Western as anyone else that has moved. We may not be so severely disconnected but our motives for going to America - usually is for a better life, not a better Africa.

I am going back to Lagos, after graduation. Do you know how many of my schoolmates will be here? 98% - only two of us are making real plans, ie already have downpayment for rentals, looking to interview...going back.

How do you propose we do this? I suggest conferences, but I think we are conferenced out. Do you think if our schools were one africa...then we could perhaps change our method of interacting via curriculums? Like the schools went to a federated pool ...and each nation gets a percentage.

I am reading this below! And you are spot on. Am I disappointed? Yes!! But you two are right I believe. Just thinking about all our strife across the border.

Can the vision of Pan-Africanism survive these realities?

I do not believe the answer is easy. Indeed I believe that a real dilemma faces the Pan-Africanist. On the one hand is the fact that Pan-Africanism demands an African consciousness and an African loyalty; on the other hand is the fact that each PanAfriCani5t must also concern himself with the freedom and development of one of the nations of Africa. These things can conflict. Let us be honest and admit that they have already conflicted.

In one sense, of course, the development of part of Africa can only help Africa as a whole. The establishment of a University College in Dar es Salaam, and of a University in Lusaka, means that Africa has two extra centres of higher education for its 250 million people. Every extra hospital means more health facilities for Africa; every extra road, railway or telephone line means that Africa is pulled closer together. And who can doubt but that the railway from Zambia to Tanzania, which we are determined to build, will serve African unity, as well as being to the direct interest of our two countries?

Unfortunately, however, that is not the whole story. Schools and universities are part of an educational system—a national educational system. They promote, and they must promote, a national outlook among the students. Lessons are given on the Government, the geography, and the history, of Tanzania, or of Zambia. Loyalty to the national constitution, to the elected leaders, to the symbols of nationhood—all these things are encouraged by every device.

This is not only inevitable; it is also right. None of the nation states of Africa are ‘natural’ units. Our present boundaries are—as has been said many times—the result of European decisions at the time of the Scramble for Africa. They are senseless; they cut across ethnic groups, often disregard natural physical divisions, and result in many different language groups being encompassed within a state. If the present states are not to disintegrate it is essential that deliberate steps be taken to foster a feeling of nationhood. Otherwise our present multitude of small countries—almost all of us too small to sustain a self- sufficient modern economy—could break up into even smaller units—perhaps based on tribalism. Then a further period of foreign domination would be inevitable. Our recent struggles would be wasted.

Let me repeat; in order to avoid internal conflict and further disunity each nation state is forced to promote its own nationhood. This does not only involve teaching a loyalty to a particular unit, and a particular flag, although that’ is serious enough. It also involves deliberately organizing one part of Africa economically, socially, and constitutionally, to serve the overall interests of the people of that part of Africa, and (in case of conflict) not the interests either of another part, or of Africa as a whole.

Thus, each state of Africa devises for itself a constitution and a political structure which is most appropriate to its own history and its own problems. In Tanzania for example, the overwhelming support for our nationalist movement, and the complete absence of a rival to it, meant that from the beginning of independence we had in effect a one-party state. But the continued existence of a political structure which assumed a two-party state meant that we were unable to harness the Party organization, and the enthusiasm of our people, for the new tasks of fighting poverty. There was also some danger that the Party leaders might get out of touch with the people they led because they were able to shelter their own personal shortcomings under the umbrella of the Party. So we worked out a new constitution which acknowledged the sole existence of one Party, and within that framework ensured the people’s democratic control of their Government. It is a new arrangement and so far it seems to be working well. But—and this is my point—it has marked a further differentiation between the political organization of Tanzania and that of other parts of Africa, including that of our neighbours. And the more the people of the United Republic become involved in this system, and the more the peoples of other African nations become involved in the systems they work out for themselves, the greater becomes the division among us.

1. The insecurity of a few Nigerians on this forum is appalling. You guys need to get rid of it. This should never have been brought here. Awful opinions are aired about Nigerians on so many forums,blogs etc. It's nothing new and has absolutely nothing to do with who you are as a Nigerian especially when you consider the fact that there's always so much ignorance in these comments just like the ones posted by the op.

2. I notice that some Africans actually use the misfortune of Nigeria to massage their ego. This is very shameful especially when you lay down certain facts.

3. The owner of this forum needs to moderate what is posted here. Yeah, I know it's a forum but this could cause a significant amount of hostility between these two countries not just online but also offline. Trust me the one with Ghana and South Africa has already been done to an extent. I'm not saying nairaland is the reason but it has contributed.

I just hope someday we'll all be able to live in peace without this unnecessary hatred. We all need to live and let live.

it has to do with the severe inferiority complex that we have developed since slavery and colonialism. Mind you, even the descendants of slaves that came back to Sierra Leone, Liberia or even the ones that used to live in Saros district in Lagos hated the indigenous Africans and looked down upon them. They were convinced that no civilization ever came out of Africa. To this day, most black people in the West think that we walk around half naked and live in trees. Which is bizarre to me because how would they explain the fact that we can do math, physics and speak English properly if we lived in trees.
Intellectuals like Henry Rawlingson Carr who were among the most educated Africans of his time and had a rivalry with Herbert Macaulay believed that the best way for Africans to evolve was going through the British. And he was not the only one that thought so. It goes to tell you how much we have willingly alienated our own culture. Imagine if people like him had written books in Yoruba using the Latin scripts if necessary, how many people would have gotten out of ignorance at the time? But they couldn't do it because their mind was thinking in that direction.
So I would tell you my friend, that we first need to love our own culture and realize that true progress is in improving it not washing ourselves of it to embrace something else. There is no respect in that. Why do you think no matter what a black American does , he still can't get respect? "Even if you in a Benz , you are still a nigga" Kanye West.

I agree with many of your points. But Afro Americans cant get respect because Africans cant get respect, we are their elders. The Asians get respect because they have countries that are efficient. The jews get respect because they take care of their diaspora. The branches are only as strong as its trees. And I have to defend afro americans, there are more malcolm xs that sought out africa than the ignorance you speak of. But, I loved the majority of what you spoke of.

My contribution to this thread:

1. Religion: not indigenous. Every european supremacist / arab supremacist gave us a religion that divided us. Only celebrate a religion that is AFROCENTRIC.
2. Lack of continuity in the world: Like it or not, we need to connect with our diaspora fro, cuba to puerto rico to Belize to america. We need to honor both those like me who had a choice and those that didnt have a choice.
3. Modern Gov: Africa needs to be open source, and crowd sourced, innovative ideas that come from us all. We need ideas that model a different governing unit. We just took up our colonist way of policy and therefore we dont OWN our government.
4. Lack of massive CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT: We need an OCCUPY AFRICA, and it should be us worldwide see point 2.
5. NO BORDERS FOR BLACK AFRICANS: We are too open to europeans and too closed to our Africans and the blacks. Host events that include us all. Restructure boundaries.
6. Debate Cafes: Host book clubs. It sounds small. But lets get back to our cafes, debating, reading african/black authors. Culture comes from literature. I know music and art but books - to me- just create discussions. Lets start going to partner countries and host book discussions.
7. HUMILITY: Nigerians, we are prideful. But it turns so many off.
8. SCHOOL CURRICULUMS: Ask educators from around the world to help change our curriculums.
