Obtaining card and documentation before attending to a dying patient in emergency cases is not compulsory anywhere in Nigeria. You can make use of ordinary paper or continuation sheet before transferring to the main card/folder. We are talking about emergency cases here. Bleeding patient for that matter.

Firstly, Not every1 DAT wears white n works in a Hosp is a nurse. Not every female in d Hosp is a nurse.. Dia are auxiliaries/quacks, dia are record officers who might av been trained to stand in as nurses. Pls, let's all learn to spot d difference
I work with a teaching Hosp owned by a state govt. I'm an ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY NURSE n I must say d way d system is designed is sumtin else. In my own accident n emergency dept, NOTHING is available not even gloves or emergency drugs/ injections. Each pt provides wateva is being used for him/her. Wen a pt is rushed into my dept, d first tin is to tell d relatives to obtain a casenote while I start checking d patient's vital sign to know whats up with d patient. After obtaining d casenote, ur doc reviews u, writes out materials, drugs/ injections, u procure dem at d pharmacy, den we start treatment. DAT is d setting we find ourselves. Nothing available except u provide ur stuffs
Buh a nurse is in d centre of all dese,..... Despite being overworked, underpaid, abused by patients n dia relatives, I'm not FRUSTRATED.
I get blamed by d ignorant pts for hospital policies, I get blamed for d lab's incompetence, doctor's unavailability
I even get blamed wen d fault is from d patients/relatives failure to bring ur pt to d hosp on tym.... Buh in all dese, I'm a NURSE.. Im HUMAN. I'll still care for d sick/dying ones despite d talks/abuses/attitudes.

God bless you for being sincere. You must be a good nurse that every patient will want to have. Some nurses up there have refused to accept the fact that those nurses the woman met were wrong. Imagine telling a doctor who wanted to help the innocent child that he should not because she has not obtained card for documentation....(here, it is not drugs or materials they needed that they asked the woman to go and bring oo). You also said you start to checking the patient immediately while the relatives go for drugs and materials and card.
This is how it's supposed to be.
Once again, thanks for being sincere and I also believe you must be a good nurse.

The truth is that emergency cases expecially patients with serious hemorrhage from trauma are treated and stabilized before thorough clerking and documentation even here in Nigeria. Blame and condemn the nonchalant attitudes of those useless nurses who derive joy in seeing people die and gossip at their cubicles

People should read the story line by line, comprehend it before commenting.
I know there are some bad eggs in every profession.
I have gone through your story and the only thing you mentioned was when the nurses asked for your child's folder. And this is for proper documentation.
I read where you said that the child had only one hour to live. How did you know the number of hours that your child had to live?
Where were you when the bleeding started? Why didn't you take the child to the hospital when the case was not serious?
Am sure you were running from taking your responsibility as a man waiting for the worst time so that you can vent your frustration on the profession.
As long as I am concern you are just saying this to get sympathy.

Acute bleeding can take life within few minutes. So, all those questions you asked up there are unnecessary. Emergency situations needs swift response. The bleeding might have been caused by anything(probably trauma) it is the responsibility of the nurses on duty to respond swiftly to the condition and not insisting on getting card for documentation which is for record purpose. The documentation can be done when the patient is recovering and stable. Documentation is not first line of management in emergency situations.

It seems you are uninformed. Don't you know that that there is what they call emergency nurses.....nurses for A&E? And even if they couldn't do anything, they were supposed to show sympathy and call the doctors on call immediately. And if you read the post carefully, you will see where the nurses were trying to stop the doctor from saving the life of the patient because the mother has not obtained the card for documentation. You are here justifying nonsense. Like I said earlier, strive to make corrections among your colleagues in the profession instead of justifying this wicked attitude. It may be you or your relative tomorrow that will be in her shoes

If you are a nurse, try and correct these anomalies from your your profession. A child was bleeding profusely but the nurses insisted on getting the card and documentation before they can attend to a dying child. You are here trying to justify terrible attitudes from the people of your profession. Strive to make positive change. People who have experienced this kind of treatment are many. Don't mind this complainant. If those nurses were also given an opportunity to express the own version of the story, it will shock you will notice a whole different story. Some mothers were very abusive, wicked and constantly cantabking. Who made the law that without folder, you won't see Dr is to be blame. Guess is the same doctor. Nurses were trained to follow rules and regulations given to them by the hospital management. Being angry and shouting online is never the solution.
