The Igbo cultural and linguistic landscape of Nigeria extends beyond the five states officially grouped in the South-East.

Outside Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, there are communities in neighbouring states that speak Igbo or Igboid languages, trace their ancestry to Igbo-speaking populations, or maintain strong historical and cultural connections with the wider Igbo world.

This is particularly evident in Delta State's Anioma area, parts of Rivers State and Igbanke in Edo State. Other communities in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Kogi and Benue are also cited in historical and community sources, although some classifications are more contested and should be treated separately.

1. DELTA STATE — ANIOMA

Delta contains the largest and most clearly documented concentration of Igbo-speaking communities outside the South-East. The Anioma area covers nine principal LGAs: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North-East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South and Ukwuani.

2. EDO STATE — IGBANKE AND IKA COMMUNITIES

Igbanke

Igbanke is one of the clearest examples of an Ika/Igboid community located outside Delta and the South-East.

The traditional Igbanke settlement is made up of six villages:

1. Ake
2. Oligie
3. Idumodin
4. Omolua
5. Ottah
6. Igbontor

Sources identify Igbanke as an Ika-speaking community and connect its language with the Ika communities of Delta State.

The community also has several traditional rulers, including the Obi of Ake, Obi of Oligie, Eze of Idumodin, Eze of Omolua, Obi of Ottah and Eze of Igbontor.

Other Edo communities frequently associated with the Ika/Igboid borderland include:

- Ekpon
- Oza
- Iru
- Oghada

These should be individually verified before being described categorically as Igbo villages.

Historical/community sources have identified small communities associated with the wider Ukwuani/Anioma-Igbo cultural area, including:

- Osekwenike
- Abuetor
- Eke-Okpokri
- Anibeze

These claims require more careful village-by-village historical and linguistic documentation than the Anioma evidence in Delta. They should therefore be described as communities with reported Igbo/Ukwuani connections, rather than automatically classifying the entire surrounding area as Igbo.

5. AKWA IBOM STATE

Communities sometimes identified in connection with Igbo/Igboid populations include:

- Ohaobu
- Obuagu
- Ikot Udo Ika

Again, these should be treated as specific community claims rather than evidence that Akwa Ibom generally is an Igbo-speaking state.

THE IMPORTANT CONCLUSION

This list should not be used to claim that every village mentioned has exactly the same identity.

The stronger historical argument is this:

The Igbo linguistic and cultural world is larger than the five states of the South-East.

There are:

Anioma/Enuani communities in Delta;
Ika communities in Delta and Edo;
Igboid communities in parts of Rivers;
and smaller historically connected communities in other neighbouring states.

Their traditional institutions are also independent.

There is no single monarch ruling all these communities. Asagba, Obi, Eze and other traditional institutions belong to individual kingdoms and communities.

Therefore, recognising a wider Igbo cultural region does not require abolishing local kingships or denying the identity of neighbouring peoples.

It means recognising the historical reality that Nigeria's political boundaries and its linguistic/cultural boundaries are not identical.

Different states.
Different kingdoms.
Different dialects.
Different traditional rulers.
But enduring linguistic, historical and cultural connections.

That is the basis on which a serious conversation about a wider Igbo cultural and developmental region can be built.

Land mass or population figures is never used as yardstick when creating new federating units in a country formed by different regions.

But this is where the comedy begins, they keep claiming Nigeria refuses to let them go, yet they are still talking about adding Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Edo and Kogi to their country. Meanwhile, these are some of the people you claim you want to separate from.

If they simply carve out their 5 states and channel their demands through their representatives at every level of government, I’m sure NASS would finish all readings in one day.
