Eko Ile: The fact is, these students are in dire need of any form of assistance. Which students are we talking about? And, how many of them are in dire need of this benevolent assistance from the state government. The truth remains that most beneficiaries of this awoof money dont really need it. It is the same few people that get the money year in-year out. Most students dont even know about this scheme. The ones in the know are the kids of the well connected. Very few indigent students know about this, and those student who are in dire need of this 'largess' only make up a paltry (probably less than 5%) of the beneficiaries. On effect alone, it is a bad idea. We can't keep denying our kids needed assistance just because of some know, perceived fears of corruption and ghost . Investing on our kids education is not limited to building schools, catering to their needs as students remains an integral part of the system of education. Riding okada to school and paying for text books, hand outs and other supplies cost money. I dont know what your point really is, but with the bolded , it seems that your are in agreement with my point that giving the money to the students is a misplaced priority. Handouts arent legitimate knowledge impacting tools. No one else does that! Lecturers sell handouts primarily to raise fund. Fact! Instead of giving the students money to buy the handouts, why not give the lecturers the money directly in the form of better and improved salary package. By so doing, you a killing two birds with a stone; First, there wont be need for these lecturers to raise more money from handouts ( less than 50% of the students buy the handouts and 99% of the handouts are useless anyway), availing them more time to fulfill their primary responsibility, which is to actually prepare and teach the students under their tutelage. Also, you'd also be achieving your aim, alleviating the plight of the indigent students in this institutions since there wont be need to buy the useless handouts in the first place. Regarding textbooks: Isnt it a better idea to say, instead of giving the students money to buy the text book, stock the libraries with the most uptodate textbook and journals. Engineering for instance, lets assume a lecturer assigned Theraja as the recommended textbook. One single Theraja costs N5000 or thereabout. If you give the students N4000 each, they still wont be able to buy the textbook, and even if they were able to buy the Theraja, what about their other classes? Why not instead spend the money to stock the Library with enough Therajas and give it out to the students at the beginning of each semester, and then take it back at the end. If you did this for ten years, on text books alone, assuming thats the singular focus for the gesture, you'd be saving the state government and the tax payers at least 50% of the money that otherwise would have been used to achieve the same thing if the money had been doled out to the students directly. By providing access to good textbooks and journals, you could achieve two more things; improving text scores via improved understanding of the material which would inevitably lead to improved standard in these institutions. Emphasis here is on access to the best journals from around the world. On the issue of riding okadas to school: this is very laughable indeed. And I am sure you know, as much as I do, that this is a moot point. How students get to work/school is none of Fashola's business. His primary duty in that regards is to avail the citizenry ( all of them, which automatically include the students) with decent medium of transportation which he seems to be doing quite fine already with BRT, etc! |

Eko Ile: So the students are stealing your money right?
Btw, is investing in your own kids and leaders of tomorrow's education is misplaced priority?
What is the right priority? Nah, I was talking about the people in charge of the money; from Fashola down to whoever is the commissioner for education in Lagos State. The priority ought to be to raise the standard of education from its dilapidated state. Doling out awoof money to ghost students in Nasarawa would not address the issue of quality that is now the bane of our tertiary institutions. |

ekt_bear: wtf?
Educational scholarship = bad idea? Why? What would you spend the money on instead? I would rather spend the money on upgrading the existing facilities at LASU, LASPOTECH, and other state-owned institutions in the state. The facilities on ground at Laspotech and LASU are beyond appalling. LASU and other universities just came back from a year long strike over mundane issues ranging from salary to retirement benefits. The students are already enrolled, and have most likely paid their tuition prior to enrollment. Why not spend the money on something more meaningful and beneficial, like improving and making the environment professors and students operate under more conducive. The money, if spent on addressing issues raised by striking lecturers and other auxiliary staff, could go a long way at forestalling the next strike at these institutions, which, sadly, is just around the corner. How many Lagos State indigenes are enrolled in higher institutions in Nigeria? Do we even have a list here? Can they publish the list of the beneficiaries, how much each person got, and what methodology they employed to arrive at how much to be awarded each student? And, what they expect the money to be used for? |

Musiwa,: I have told you people over and over again, we are the one behind ACN success and not Tinubu, and If Jonathan does not want to get himself into serious international problem with other country, he should stop from now courting Tinubu. Look the Yoruba must stay away from Tinubu because Tinubu have drug related charges in the USA, I am not saying ACN is a bad party , NO.I know people in ACN, even some distance member. estmetn
Look ask anyone abroad, Everybody stay away from a man who have drug charge abroad. And Tinubu have been said to have drug charge. And the Yoruba people should not been seen aiding Drug. It affect investment and how people see us. Look Even If I was fashola, aregbesola, fayemi and others or ACN I will disassociate myself from tinubu.
I doubt if any of them understand how international law and policing works. Look for tinubu having a drug charge , all of his friend and family can be associated with a gang and can be watch, even nigeria journalist written for tinubu , you will end up finding your names on an international blacklisted list. watch list of drug dealer. you better , understand how the system work. no visa for you. when people have drug charge , we run away from them over here. we dont even give them our phone number.
It is not about politics or party, look go to osun state and see the university oyinlola built, or go to Ogbomosho, and see the teaching hospital Akala is building in oyo state. tinubu as governor never did have of that. fashola have out perform tinubu 8 years in 4 years. Go and ask anyone. it as nothing to do with political party but your lifes are in danger.
it is not about been against Jonathan too, look my cousin went to uniport at the same time with jonathan. they were in the same faculty. so it is not about anyone or any political party. it is about satellite pictures.
We would not hand over Yorubaland if the united nation approve it to any politician to milk. or the united nation would help us or we would lead it ourself. They have milk yorubaland enough, enough of greed. you cant continue to rob a people. look i am older than obasanjo when he became president, and every member helping is older than obasanjo when he became president. so anyone thinking we would hand over for him to continue to rob our people. is a dream. we have setup a group of Godly people. I am using the word , Godly people.
Look like I said before we have applied to the united nation and if we are granted, I can tell you, that nation would not be in the hand of Tinubu or any political party. We have constitute a Godly body to help with this. we would never hand over Yorubaland to any politician be nothing to steal, So tinubu and other politician should stop dreaming. And you people dont get it, that we are trying hard to save you from a civil war based on your history. Now ask , why do you think Dangote is quickly investing his money out of nigeria. It is because dangote is old enough to understand the satellite pictures. How do you think Dangote made his money. Do you think it is by been silly or facing the truth.
You mumu people, why do you think tony Elumelu invested in tanzania because they are old enough to understand where the satellite picture means to your life. everybody is moving some of thier money out of danger, incase.
http://thenationonlineng.net/web3/business/33387.html
Look I dont think some of you understand what tinubu charge , even Jonathan look ignorant , ask anyone, this is how victim of drugs look like. I have nothing personal against tinubu, but I am telling you , how they see it abroad. Tinubu would never lead a Yoruba country. He works for the government too. better still some say con. Take that for me. we have apply to the united nation peacemaker and if granted , on the issue of igbo. if the united nation comes to nigeria, it is then the igbo can state where they want to be. it is like marriage, the south would not get to keep all of the oil. this is how they break up a nation. you can not keep all of the oil , you would be force to give the north part of the oil revenue. God love a chearful giver.

Kilode?!: Exactly, but unfortunately a lot of less discerning folks tend to get stuck on divisions/fights over ephemeral, less enduring things like personalities and immediate gratification. Very unfortunate. Even our so called First Class mind from OAU falls for such triviality. The biggest problem in Nigeria has been the educated elite, very uneducated really. Those who are supposed to be more discerning, more critical and more alert. Our journalists have done a poor job educating the masses and the rest of us why we should vote for well thought out plans, instead of plantains. It is easy to get caught up in those disagreements, So we often need to calm down and force ourselves to look at the big picture, that is the point in here. I really dont think there are disagreements here. where is the disagreement between GEJ and Buhari? Buhari promises to fight corruption, GEJ did not disagree? What else do we know about Buhari? That there is nothing wrong with our educational system? Where is the disagreement here? None! So how can we talk about disagreement when the two front runners do not disagree? There wasnt even a debate between the two, let alone any intellectual spar we know of. Even though Hillary and Obama are both liberals, we understand where they differ because they debated each other more than 20 times before the election. In our case, our mallam cant even articulate his plans and uncle Joe, even as the sitting president, does not have facts and cant defend himself; yet, we are here talking about division. What division I ask again ? |
Politics › Re: It's Not War, It's Election After All by fstranger3(m): 9:42am On Apr 13, 2011 |
The division is around personalities, not around ideas. The division is superficial, and it will not last. This is not a Liberal Vs Conservative kind of division, it is not a class/social status division. It is a Buhari Vs GEJ division, both have no original ideas of their own. There are no Buharists school of thought, neither do we we have GEJist nor Ribadu-ists. None of them has an Economic agenda in the mold of great minds like Milton So they wont last, personalities fail eventuality since no one is infallible. |

Things like this still happen. My former bestfriend from high school, her mom put her idiȯt dad through school and once he finished school and she got pregnant the dumbass left her, married another woman, and started a family with the new woman. What about men putting their wives through school, nursing school especially, only for the wives to dump them afterwards. Lets be fair here. |

ekt_bear: BRF won't get to appoint his own commissioners?
Why do you say this? Where did you hear it from? FORMER LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR AND FOUNDER OF THE ACTION CONGRESS OF NIGERIA (ACN), ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU
LAGOS, Feb 24, (THEWILL) - Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu today described how former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) frustrated the alliance talks between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
Tinubu also stated that it is the sole responsibility of the ACN to appoint cabinet members into the Lagos State Executive Council adding that state Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola has no business appointing commissioners into his cabinet.
The former governor made the revelation at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, where he alleged that the leadership of the PDP paid some people who participated in the talks to ensure that the discussions failed on the ground that an ACN/CPC alliance posed a huge threat to the PDP regime.
“The PDP paid some people to frustrate the party’s effort because it knew that if the alliance should work, the PDP would be swept out of office. The ruling party worked against the alliance through its agents planted within,” the former governor said. Tinubu’s position was corroborated by another leader of the ACN who spoke with THEWILL on the condition of anonymity, adding that Obasanjo planted some of his loyalists around the presidential candidate of the CPC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari and mandated them to frustrate alliance talks.
