My first experience in the Ibo Country began in 1900. At that time Onitsha Waterside was little better than " bush." There was not a single road in the country. Except for a few neighbouring towns the hinterland was unknown territory. Only fragmentary information could be gleaned from the natives, travelling not being a healthy occupation in those days. Onitsha was the only place marked on the maps, and therefore it was a virgin field for the pioneer?missionary or otherwise. . . |

Despite the absence of industrialization and ethnic heterogeneity and despite the continued importance of kinship units, the Yoruba had cities even before European penetration. They had cities because they had large, dense, permanent communities whose inhabitants were economically inde- pendent, socially stratified, and politically unified. These cities were based on farming, craft specialization, and trading. Only Lagos represents the common type of recent growth of African cities as ports, mining and trading centers, and colonial administrative headquarters. Some Yoruba cities were metropolitan, serving as capitals and cen- ters of the Yoruba kingdoms; others were nonmetropolitan. . . |

ezeagu: All I understand is "overgrown village" which is not attractive to anyone. The estimated index of urbanization of Yoruba cities falls between that of the United States and Canada, and the distribu- tion of population in urban centers is re- markably similar to that in France.
Urbanization can therefore be considered a traditional Yoruba pattern and not the outgrowth of European acculturation. It cannot be explained in terms of the develop- ment of colonial administrative centers, ports, mines, or industry. The real basis of the Yoruba economy is, and was, farming. Yet the farmers are city dwellers, and the city is not really a "nonfarm area" as we view it. A belt of peripheral farms which are visited regularly surrounds the city, extend- ing as much as fifteen miles or more outside it. Families whose farms are more distant may have farm huts, where they spend sev- eral days at a time during the height of the farming activity, but they maintain a resi- dence in the city and regard it as their real home. Some Yoruba, of course, live on farms or in very small villages. |

aribisala0: quite disappointing really .smacks of insecurity if you need to validate your position by bragging about degrees and schools.save that for your cv and next employer. schooling and education aren't quite the same.your input here is outstanding only in its vacuosness.i have not read anything to make me wish i had gone to UMD whatever that stands for.university degrees or any other type of training should provide tools for thinking.really do you really believe you are more intelligent than anyone here because of a degree.did they really teach you that there? UMD = University of Maryland. It is one of the shyytier schools on the East Coast. Ezeuche is daft really. |

aribisala0: not so basic sir .even if the economy of china were to treble per capita income will not be half of the US's.not likely in a long time.plus in order to think about exporting manufacturing you must have some technological fall back position, what would china do.china still imports most machines/engines from germany/US and does not have this edge. ezeagu: Eh, I believe what I said was that if the east is a slum (as a poster said the whole of the east is a slum) then the rest of Nigeria is for rubbish. To make it clear, the east of Nigeria probably has the least slums. And people hustling in Alaba doesn't change the fact that eastern people are not known for begging. Is that the new lingo for pick-pocketing? |
