@tpiah!: It varies from family to family. My sisters for example have gone to pretty excellent schools and in fact are being given more resources than I. 16 year old will match or exceed my accomplishments. The youngest one will significantly outperform me. . . equal or superior raw intelligence, better work ethic, more money available to her, and better guidance than I had.
Tpiah is just hurting. All the women in my family have all done very well, with advanced degrees from some of America's finest institutions.

Clueless, incompetent ministers

It was also revealed that many of the ministers were chosen solely because of their closeness to the president and not based on national interest. Sayyadi Abba Ruma, then Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources; and Hassan Lawal, then Minister of Works and Housing, and the only other minister, after Mr. Madueke, to have served in Messrs. Obasanjo and Yar'Adua administration were described to fit this profile. Mr. Ruma's several appointments, including heading the Labour Ministry and the Ministry of Health following the removal of the former Minister on corruption charges are said to be tied to him attending the same secondary school with Mr. Yar'Adua.

US agencies "found him ineffective as the supervising Minister of Health from April to December 12, 2008." "Ruma is part of the Katsina clique (President Yar'Adua's home state) and has the ear of President Yar'Adua. Ruma is reportedly also President Yar'Adua's cousin. We have been told that he served as the first kidney donor to Yar'Adua," the cable said. Deziani Allison-Madueke, the then Minister of Mines and Steel Development, was described as "ineffectual" and said to have done "a poor job in her last Ministerial position as Transportation and Aviation Minister". The Americans remembered her more for having wept in public at the state of disrepair of the Lagos-Ore Expressway while serving as Minister of Transportation. After several interactions with Bagudu Hirse, the second Minister of State in the Foreign Affairs ministry, the Americans said "he appeared thoroughly unbriefed on foreign affairs". The then Minister of Science and Technology, Alhassan Zaku, was said to have "made no real noteworthy contributions in his previous position as Minister of State for Science and Technology

Obasanjo tried to employ the best Nigerians he could find. They only happened to be Igbos, and were among his best achieving ministers and technocrats, hence the encomiums from Fani Kayode.

He didn't do it out of altruism. He really wanted to leave a legacy, and he did not fail completely because of these women. cool
I guess the following are Igbos, innit?

Despite the knocks against majority of President' Yar'Adua's cabinet, some ministers won the admiration of the Americans. Babatunde Osotimehin, the then Minister of Health, was described as "one of Yar'Adua's better appointments"; Aderemi Babalola, then Minister of State for Finance, was said to be "extremely competent, knows his portfolio well".

About Mansur Muhtar, the then Minister of Finance, who played a major role in the negotiations that led to Nigeria's exit from the Paris and London Clubs of creditors, the officials said, "A senior U.S. economist who worked closely with him at the Africa Development Bank described him as by far the best Executive Director at the bank , smart, articulate, and gets the big picture.

I'm rotfl to see that this thread made it to 12 pages. In normal societies, this wouldn't be much of a big deal, afterall we are all Nigerians. But not in Nigeria!
Watch how some folks are mining the internet just to divert as much attention as possible from this topic and by so doing diffuse away as much glory as possible from these Nigerian women.

Like I stated in another thread, Nigeria's biggest problem is not corruption. FAR FROM IT.

Nigeria's biggest problem is injustice which is a product of wickedness, which is a product of foolishness and reta-rdation.

Suddenly, praising Nigerian women of Igbo extraction has become boasting and "blowing trumpet".
If tomorrow, the Super Falcons snag the female world cup, it would no longer be true that overwhelming majority of the team is Igbo. Some folks will die first before acknowledging that fact.

Until Nigerians are able to rejoice in the achievement of fellow citizens irrespective of tribe (which currently they are incapable of), let us all keep lying to ourselves about being one.

I'm still singing the praises of my sisters, mothers and daughters. And if I have a baby girl tomorrow, I will put in my blood to send her to Harvard, Stanford or Princeton; just like my father did for me.
That is the spirit of the Igboman. . . and culture.  cool  cool  cool
.   .    . bought on by their desire to stand up to and catch up with their more successful neighbor, the Yoruba people, NO?

ACN or PDP

It seems ACN is gradually taking over Nigeria; from Lagos to Akwa-Ibom in the SS to Anambra in the SE

Anything wrong with that picture?

I'm a detribalized Nigerian.
In American and British English, "detribalize" is a verb used condescendingly to imply that "culturally superior" Europeans have caused a people to lose their "savage" cultural identities. In other words, to detribalize a person or a people is to Europeanize or westernize them. It is to make them lose their language, their customs, their mores—generally things that make them "primitive" by European standards. Is this what you mean Jarus?

I am not sure what being detribalized has got to de with the points raised by Ekt Bear and I. undecided

I don't care where you come from. The reason I defend some good northerners is that I hate the widespread belief that nothing good can come from a northerner. That is the mindset of many Nigerians, and I find that disgusting. I believe good men can come from anywhere. I also admire good men from the south(Fashola, Amaechi, Fola Adeola etc).
I doubt that! The fact remains that academically, and to some extent, intellectually, they lag behind the south. One or two superstars from the North wont erase those widely accepted perceptions

I'm a pure Yoruba, half-Kwara, half-Osun.
Would you have preferred to be a Northerner?

I

Wow, you have a point! I didn't read it to the end, where it stated that "the percieved 'success penalty' in the earlier years was a choice and not the result of the education per se." It basically says that in the earlier years the women would be less selective in a guy because she thinks that she is less competitive in the dating field. Wow! That's deep. I think that is very true, and proves your point. I also do believe though that these women may be new in the dating field and don't know what they want in a partner yet.
But it's funny that certain myths and half truths are perpetuated and end up causing women to make bad choices in desperation. Fstranger3, you may have saved a few people out there who have pessamistic assumptions about the negativity of their situations.
I know. I never believe in un-substantiated perceptions. I believe in the power of research and i try to pay attention to details that others might miss. I have heard that myth since childhood and it seems to have gained ground mostly among people who are unfortunate to find themselves in that situation. They allow their emotion and present condition to override their rational mind.

Anyway, i am glad you posted the link. I did learn something from  it.

I did read what you wrote. Well, I know people here who have many degrees and I've never thought anything of it. For me, that's just normal [and yes, I know what is normal for me may be abnormal for someone else]. I've even seen some people both male and female who are still obtaining degrees even in their old age. She doesn't have to use degrees if she doesn't want to. What's wrong with her just having the degrees just because she wants it?

@fstranger: Avoid triumphalism

"Speak softy but carry a big stick", as they say
Triumphalism isnt all that bad you know grin

At the same time, triumphalism also provides impetus to proselytization, conquest and the general expansion of a group or doctrine. Many successful historical movements have worked from a triumphalist base. Examples include the Islamic conquests of the 7th century, European colonialism, and the concept of manifest destiny which helped the United States to dominance in North America, in the process transforming itself into what some call the American empire

Pennywise:
Laparoscopic surgery has become a convenient excuse to explain away another clear case of fraud and theft of public funds. To a 'doctor' trying to find his feet in America it is a big deal in Nigeria. It will surprise him to find that practically all decent clinics in Lagos is laparoscopy-capable.

I dont know what jungle medical school naijaking went to in Nigeria or what exposure he had but u will be surprised that some of the best health facilities are available to those who can afford it.

My advise to you is to come back home and make your self relevant instead of staying there in the states where u are only allowed to see black patients
That is below the belt. There is no reason for that!

All kidney failures are not subject to surgical intervention.
Most are managed medically, some are even conservatively managed, but a few are surgically managed----biopsy, nephrectomy, nephroraphy, or transplant, just a few. Patients coild walk around with chronic kidney failure for years if well managed, or on dialysis. So, that makes it less fatal.
I never doubted that. I thought we were under the assumption that Yar'adua needed a transplant. This was kidney failure WRT to Yar'adua's case. If you want to talk about who to manage a stage V ESRD, please be my guest! Open a new thread!

The point which you're refusing to accept is that both conditions could be potentially fatal, especially if you have doctors like pennywise operating on that poor woman.
Kidney failures could be easily treated too, when you have the right M.D

You're seriously shying away from discussing how Buhari banned the Nigerian Medical Association? Is that your ploy?
That is actually a major surgery and very risky, very few places have the expertise for that. There is more to it than an ordinary peri-umbilical pain that radiates to the RLQ.
