Science/Technology10 Facts About Earth by fubbyy(op): 10:51pm On Jun 06, 2013
Earth, our home planet, is the only planet whose
name is not derived from Greek/Roman mythology.
In Roman Mythology, the goddess of the Earth was
Tellus - the fertile soil, while the Greek goddes was
Gaia, terra mater - Mother Earth. The name we use
today, Earth, comes from Old English and Germanic.

1. Earth is the third planet from the Sun

The Earth's average distance from the Sun is
149,597,890 km (92,955,820 miles) or one
astronomical unit (AU). Located between Venus and
Mars, some people have called it the "third rock from
the sun."

2. Earth is the fifth largest planet

The diameter of the earth at the equator is about
7926 miles, but that's not the whole story. Because
the earth is not a perfect sphere but is slightly
flattened at the poles, the diameter of the earth
measured around the North Pole and the South Pole
is about 7899 miles.

3. Earth is the only planet known to harbor life

All of the things we need to survive are provided
under a thin layer of atmosphere that separates us
from the uninhabitable void of space. Earth is made
up of complex, interactive systems that are often
unpredictable. Air, water, land, and life - including
humans - combine forces to create a constantly
changing world that we are striving to understand.

4. Earth is mostly covered in water

While the word earth is often used synonymously
with dirt, seventy-one percent of the its surface is
covered with water. It is the only planet where it
exists in its liquid form on the surface. This is
probably part of the reason that the Earth is the only
planet known to contain life.

5. Early philosophy had the Earth as the
center of the universe

Although Aristarchus of Samos, in the 3rd Century
B.C., figured out how to measure the distances to
and sizes of the Sun and the Moon, and concluded
that the Earth orbited the Sun, this view didn't
attract followers until Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish
astronomer, published "On the Revolutions of the
Celestial Spheres" in 1543.

6. Earth has four distinct seasons

This is a result of a result of Earth's axis of rotation
being tilted more than 23 degrees. Seasons changes
as the tilt of Earth's axis changes during it's
revolution around the Sun.

7. Earth has an atmosphere that sustains life

Earth's atmosphere is 77% nitrogen, 21% oxygen,
with traces of argon, carbon dioxide and water. This
atmosphere affects Earth's long-term climate and
short-term local weather; shields us from nearly all
harmful radiation coming from the Sun; and protects
us from meteors as well - most of which burn up
before they can strike the surface.

8. Earth has one natural satellite

Earth's Moon (called Luna) orbits at a distance of
384,000km, with a radius of 1738KM and a mass of
7.32e22kg. However, there are thousands of small
artificial satellites which have been placed in orbit
around the Earth. Also, asteroids 3753 Cruithne and
2002 AA29 have complicated orbital relationships
with the Earth; they're not really moons, the term
"companion" is being used.
Because of its size and rocky composition, the moon
has also been called a terrestrial planet along with
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. It has no
atmosphere, but there is water ice in some deep
craters. The moon is the only extra-planetary body
that a human has visited.

9. Earth has a magnetic field

Our planet's rapid spin and molten nickel-
iron core
give rise to a magnetic field, which the solar wind
distorts into a teardrop shape. The magnetic field
does not fade off into space, but has definite
boundaries. Just like the field around a magnet, ours
is also polarized. When charged particles from the
solar wind become trapped in Earth's magnetic field,
they collide with air molecules above our planet's
magnetic poles. These air molecules then begin to
glow and are known as the aurorae, or the Northern
and Southern Lights
.
10. Our close proximity prevents us from
seeing Earth in its entirety

To completely view our own planet, we must leave
its surface and journey into space. From the vantage
point of space we are able to observe our planet
globally, as we do other planets, using similar
sensitive instruments to understand the delicate
balance among its oceans, air, land, and life. Viewing
Earth from the unique perspective of space provides
the opportunity to see Earth as a whole. Scientists
around the world have discovered many things
about our planet by working together and sharing
their findings.

annoymous: I'm a 25 yr old medical doctor who recently concluded the compulsory one year NYSC. I am not particularly happy with medicine and I think I only became a doctor due to family/environmental pressure. I have a fairly nicely paying job so it ain't about the pay.

I'm going for a Masters in Public Health this fall in a highly reputed university and am now thinking of starting over. write the SAT, and go back for a first degree in petroleum engineering.

I want a job I'll be happy doing for the rest of my life. better late than never, I guess. what are your thoughts? thanks a mil
first of all, I'm happy for you for having the courage to follow your heart but before I give you the credit I have to blame you first

How can you spend years learning what you don't wanna do? Spending your parents money and giving them a false hope of becoming a doc's parents, why did you accept your admission Letter?why didn't you follow your heart then or are you just realizing that now?

My father's biggest wish is to be a reverend father's dad,he sent me to seminary, the few months I spent there was war front, fighting almost everyday, breaking people's head and disturbing the peace of the school and he kept covering it up by paying for every damage I caused

When I realized that my trouble wasn't giving him enough reason to bring me out there,I woke up one morning and pack my bag and left,I came back home,he bundled me back to seminary, they advised him to let me follow my heart

Within me I know I was born to be in the entertainment industry,I told him my heart desire,he advised me to get a degree first which I obliged,I've now graduated(about to serve) now its time to do what I love doing, what I was born to do,what will make me feel fulfilled

So I advice you to live your dreams, follow your heart and do what makes you happy, life's too short to do other people's wish, your happiness should be your priority

Comparing a producer and an artist is like comparing a footballer and his coach, even if the footballer is the world best, his coach is doing better because the footballer will fade, get injury or lost fitness while the coach keep getting contract from club to club until he gets old and feel like its time to rest

Jazzy is doing pretty well more than d'banj in every aspect and d'banj know it,he's(d'banj)only chasing shadows, breaking into american market? Big dreams, I still don't know why a grown man like d'banj didn't know why kanye is rolling with him, kanye is just using him to get more african attention and sell more records while d'banj is only excited for rolling with the world super star

When is he going to learn to deal with the challenges of life? How will he ever learn to adapt? Guys in the US become independent very early and for uou and him to be always in each other's company would hmmmm....be highly suspicious. Would you be comfortable with that? You certainly can go into a sports bar and watch a game and discuss with total strangers. That's why sports bars are always noisy. But that kind of friendship usually ends when you leave the bar. Why should it continue? Your cousin is a big baby so you decide if you want to go and be a baby sitter.
I didn't said his father is sponsoring me just to be with him, that's just my thought, though am sure it must be one of the reasons but his dad's main reason of doing so is to pay back my late mum what she did for him many decades ago

My cousin has been there for many years and all his complain is not much about him but also about me,he knows the type of person I am so he's kind of letting me know what to expect

He knows I always think of being rich before 30 and he's telling me america can't fulfill that dreams for me

He knows how I deal with girls in nigeria so he's telling me that I might be disappointed in the usa

So its not like he's regretting being in america , he's only saying that naija is more fun for him based on the lifestyle he(we) live

in nigeria when he rolls on his ride he feel on top, every chick wanna hop in ,every guy wanna be a friend but in america if you like drive bentley the dude next door drives LIMO so nothing special about you

True prophet will never deceive you, they will say it as GOD says it.
True prophets are very scarce, you rarely meet them, but anytime you meet them, you will know that they are God's servant. [B] You need to know that you are a prophet of yourself[b/], you only need to develop yourself to this level. When you move close to God, he moves closer to you, when you go far away from God, he will also move far away.

he's not saying you can't make friends at all, what he meant is this, for example in nigeria you can enter a bar to drink before you finish a bottle you are already discussing with som1 about yesterday's premier league,at the end of the way both of you are friends, but in america its not like that, once you are a stranger nobody knows what you are up to and can't just mingle with you that easily

La Parisienne: Everybody, their mother and their mother's friend are now giving advice on life in foreign countries. Including those who don't even own passports. SMDH

@OP
I don't live in the US, but I have friends and relatives there who are doing very fine. It depends on the state/city you are going to, and what you want to make of your life while you are there. Just make sure you are a legal immigrant. I believe the best way to go there is through school, unless you have a family member that can sponsor you. If you do your homework well, you should be fine.

Your cousin's advice is pretty dumb
1. People might not be as friendly as in Nigeria, but you can still make friends if you are sociable. It aint rocket science.

2. The US is an organized/developed country where the rule of law thrives. Nigeria, not so much. It's quite certain that your cousin prefers lawlessness. Who knows, he probably has criminal tendencies.

3. Not applicable to me.

4. Personally, I'd rather be comfortable/modestly rich in a safe, clean and urban country with high quality of life, than be stinkingly rich in an unsafe country with low quality of life.
nice 1 but

1...If people there are not as friendly as people are in nigeria that means he's somehow right

2... No he doesn't have criminal tendency, Lol.. He's from a wealthy family

3... Alright

4... You are actually right

Thanks for your contribution

texaco1: there is just one single truth there ,if u go to the usa and u have all necessary papers and legal resident permit then u will hve the freedom of been anything u may want to be in life .but if u go there nd become an illegal immigrant u wnt hve the chance of exploiting the abundance opportunities there.but do u have job offers in naija?are they good?
yes I have a good job waiting for me in 2014 after my nysc, its a very nice job with good salary but you know when an average naija guy have the opportunity of traveling abroad(yankee 4 that matter)it will be very difficult trading it for anything

This papers you guys talk about,I taught usa is full of blacks, does immigration goes around tasking every black to know about the papers, I taught it only happens in europe where every black man can be spotted once he enter the street

In usa how do they differentiate citizens and foreigners when they look at them? Does citizens also need papers?

If uou have the same attitude then you can expect the same kind of experiences or even worse.Freedom is no different than it is in Naija. There is no place that you can't go....but then there are places that you would choose not to go...in Naija because of tribe...in the US because of race. On point 3...you just can't talk to people anyhow period. It depends on the girl you speak to anyhow...she may most likely shout you down or get her peeps to give you a beat down..or if she decides to call the police only Heaven knows how many charges you would be facing but you would be locked up....and if felony charges....deported after serving sentence....just like that.America is no bed of roses and has many laws...which they enforce...and no oga at d top is above the law.
