If I am the HRM officer, once the old staff tenders the notice of voluntary retirement maybe on health grounds, I will accept it on behalf of the organization and present it to the management with a recommendation that the staff should be allowed to stay off work with immediate effect rather than wait for the 1 month or so notice period.

It is still a win-win situation for both management and the old staff; it also helps the HRM to uphold international best practice. Ultimately, this may be a better way to prevent litigation against the management because if the old staff is sacked unjustly, he may engage his lawyers and proceed to court.
