1jn 5:17 "All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not unto death". If there is a sin not unto death,though you need to pray for the repentance of that brethren as John admonished in the quoted passage,what if the brethren dies having committed one sin that is "not unto death". Remember that Rev 21:27 says "And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that is unclean". Now lets look at 1 cor 3:13-17 for answer.

1 cor 3:13 "Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is". This is obviously talking of the judgement...judgement comes after death.

3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. I believe you can say Alleluia here. 1st group

3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 2nd group

3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 3rd group

Now I'm looking seriously at that second group and I'm wondering, this God is a merciful God and Just as well, he does not condone sin,but he looks at the heart and rewards effort,hence there are some who really made effort but are not perfect. We often say no one is perfect but we still hope to enter heaven, how? The answer is in that 2nd group. Lets leave the name " purgatory" for now,let's give a thought to the above scriptural lines, if you are interested, we can move ahead.

Now I'm learning. About the 3rd group you mentioned, how does one defile the temple of God? Could this be the sin against the Holy Spirit which the Bible says cannot be forgiven. I ask because the verse says the third group will be destroyed by God.

I said they split the bills, I never said she picked them.The normal thing is to share the expenses based on percentage of earning. So if they both spend, for example, 20% of their monthly earning on bills, then that's considered as splitting it 50/50 because they are spending thesame percentage of earning.

chiteny: OP, I highlighted those two phrases to show you the difference between what you said and what the bible said. The two key words there are "Hell" and "Death". They both mean different things.as the bible rightly says, all unrighteousness is sin. But not all sin lead to death; death in this case representing physical death.

I beg to differ on this: Anytime the Bible talks about death it's always spiritual death, not physical death.

I may be wrong though.

If the only thing that can make somebody avoid hell is to abstain from sin in any form, then nobody can make heaven because nobody can completely abstain from sin according to Eccle. 7: 20 - "For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not."

Accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour and asking for forgiveness anytime we err is what can help us avoid hell.
