aribisala0: Guy I have provided links to well known dictionaries let the other readers read and make up their minds. Words have more than one meaning often and the grammatical focus you have is BUT ONE of the several meanings of the word; PHRASE. Or must people use the word to mean only what you know ??

Whatever I am is irrelevant and I have nothing to say to you.

We are trying to have some fun.
Definition
A phrase is a syntactic structure
that consists of more than one word
but lacks the subject-predicate
organization of a clause .

aribisala0: Just so we can put these annoying runts back in their boring boxes

The word phrase, like many other words in English, has several meanings. It has a specific meaning in "Grammar" and different meanings in linguistics, colloquialisms etc. Always you find these urchins pumped up with half knowledge of the Language trying to bully or bulldoze their way into the party and spoil it. It is true "half-knowledge" is a dangerous thing.
A phrase can mean; a commomly used expression as in

"Is that your final answer?" the want to be a Millionaire TV programme

or "shaken not stirred" James Bond.

Grammatically they(phrases) may qualify to be called sentences or clauses but they are also "PHRASES" in a different sense

the word phrase may refer any idiomatic expression as in "man must wack" or "a man's got to do what a man must do e.g.

It may also refer to " a characteristic manner of expression" as in Zebrudaya's "Even plus including....."

Thus all the expressions provided thus far are phrases, definitely

So can the breezy brained, boring, bombastic booboo get in his box and let the fun continue.
U obviously lack d knowledge of d difference btw a phrase and a clause. If u maintain those are phrases, then tell us the kind of phrases they are.
You must be an English language teacher in one village primary sch (lol)

nacotic: This is a true eyewitness account of wot rily happened on dat fateful day, I was in d said forest duin my daily palmwine tapping cos its a kinda hobby 2me, i jst finished my rounds n was on my way home wen I noticed a very tall palm tree lookn vry fresh.
I wantd 2continue on ma way home n maybe com back 2moro but somtn kept me rooted n staring transfixed at d tree so since I had an extra gallon wit me I decided 2climb, I tuk a good luk around d forest n packed my bicycle cos av met more than one or two suspicious lukn characters in d forest recently, I unhinged my tools n fastened it on d tree makn sure twas secure bearing in mind dat d tree was unusually tall n a fall wld b fatal n started climbing.

shadrach77: i know this topic has been treated once but i enjoyed it so much, so i thought we can revive it once again. There are some funny phrases used by Nigerian journalists. Here are some of them

1. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala finger.ed in N20 billion scam
2. Super Eagles maul Black Stars
3. Police swarm Victoria Island in search of missing girl
4. Enugu Airport to gulp N60 billion
5. Tinubu slams Obasanjo
6. FG tasks local government chairmen

pls add yours smiley smiley smiley
These sentences are not phrases and neither are the bolded words. Pls read the definition of a phrase and a clause below.

To understand punctuation, it is
helpful to understand the difference
between a phrase and a clause .
I. A phrase is a collection of words
that may have nouns or verbals, but
it does not have a subject doing a
verb. The following are examples of
phrases:
leaving behind the dog
smashing into a fence
before the first test
after the devastation
between ignorance and intelligence
broken into thousands of pieces
because of her glittering smile
In these examples above, you will
find nouns (dog, fence, test,
devastation, ignorance, intelligence,
thousands, pieces). You also have
some verbals ( leaving, smashing),
but in no case is the noun
functioning as a subject doing a
predicate verb. They are all phrases.
II . A clause is a collection of words
that has a subject that is actively
doing a verb. The following are
examples of clauses:
since she laughs at diffident men
I despise individuals of low character
when the saints go marching in
Obediah Simpson is uglier than a
rabid raccoon
because she smiled at him.
In the examples above, we find
either a noun or a pronoun that is a
subject (bold-print and red)
attached to a predicate verb
(underlined and purple) in each
case:
since she laughs at diffident men
I despise individuals of low character
when the saints go marching in
Obediah Simpson is uglier than a
rabid raccoon
because she smiled at him
III. If the clause could stand by
itself, and form a complete sentence
with punctuation, we call the clause
an independent clause . The
following are independent clauses:
I despise individuals of low character
Obediah Simpson is uglier than a
rabid racoon
We could easily turn independent
clauses into complete sentences by
adding appropriate punctuation
marks. We might say, "I despise
individuals of low character." Or we
might write, "Obediah Simpson is
uglier than a rabid racoon!" We call
them independent because these types
of clauses can stand independently by
themselves, without any extra
words attached, and be complete
sentences.
IV. Dependent clauses have a
subject doing a verb, but they have
a subordinate conjunction placed in
front of the clause. That subordinate
conjunction means that the clause
can't stand independently by itself
and become a complete sentence.
Instead, the dependent clause is
dependent upon another clause--it
can't make a complete sentence by
itself, even though it has a subject
doing a verb. Here are some
examples of dependent clauses:
since she laughs at diffident men
when the saints go marching in
because she smiled at him
These clauses simply do not form
complete thoughts or sentences by
themselves. Those subordinate
conjunctions-- since , when , and
because-- cause the listener to expect
some extra material. The thought is
incomplete. If you walked up to a
friend in the dorms and said, "since
she laughs at diffident men," and
then walked away without adding
an independent clause, the friend
would be completely baffled.
It's important to understand the
difference between phrases,
dependent clauses, and independent
clauses because many punctuation
marks--such as commas, semicolons,
and colons, require one or the other.

efe22: Noted sir. Ignor button activated. But you self know say e no easy.
@Honeric, I understand sir.
This thread is full of hypocrites. Efe22 is an ardent poster here and now in need of help, and he has asked traders in here to help him but pple are either giving excuses or acting like they didnt see his plea for help.

Traders in here are always quick to shout that they made 200pips to 500pips daily, some even brandish their accounts showing hundreds of dollars in floating or closed profit. But now a brother needs ur help u've all gone mute. If 10 pple could give him just $50 each, his plea for $500 is met. So much for being ur brother's keeper.

Everybody in here wants u to share ur strategy but never willing to help when called upon.
Unfortunately he has pushed d ignore button on d only person that is able and willing to help. Thatz why I always tell pple never to judge a book by its cover.

efe22: MY SINCERE LETTER TO BORROW MONEY

Hello my fellow brothers. I know to find you in good health and cheerful spirit. I am writing this to you all to make a request which I strongly believe will not go unheeded. Honestly due to my recent financial debacle, I am force to do this because I believe there is no harm in trying.

By this, I wish to ask anyone to kindly please lend (borrow0 me the sum of $500 to help me tide over the present debt. I promise to retunrn the same unfailingly within three months precisely 11-03-2013. honestly if I have other alternative to raise the money at this time, I wouldn't bother coming here.

I know this may be hard because it has to do with TRUST issue but pls believe me. In Feb, I will be receiving money for my offline project and by March, all this will be over. I have learnt from all my mistakes this year particularly the saddest which was the GAP loss caused by my negligence. I have also learn t to adopt 3% of my capital in any trade. come Jan., you will see a new me by the grace of God. may God lead us into 2013 with good health.

Sincerely,
If u intend paying back the $500 within 3months with money made from trading the $500, then u still havent learned a fundamental lesson: forex trading is a business and thus must be handled as such. Successful FX trading is a long-term project and any hope/plan of doubling your account (in this case d $500) within 3months is a recipe for disaster.

And since u are expecting funds in Feb for an offline project, why not paper-trade until the funds arrive in Feb then u can divert it into FX trading?

obadiah777: I SEE NO ONE DONE THIS QUESTION JUSTICE YET.

YES THERE WILL ONLY BE 144,000 IN THE NEW HEAVEN AND TRUST ME WHEN I SAY EVEN YOU WERE IN THE RUNNING TO BE PART OF THE 144000. EVERY SPIRIT CREATED HAD A CHANCE TO BE PART OF THE 144000. THE LORD IS FAIR AND JUST. SO THE 144,000 WERE SELECTED BEFORE THE FLOOD AND BEFORE THE WORLD WAS HANDED OVER TO THE GENTILES ( THOSE WHO DIDNT MAKE THE 144,000 ) TO RULE ( STARTING OUT WITH NIMROD OF THE ANCIENT BABYLONIAN EMPIRE ).

HOWEVER THE REST OF THE PEOPLE WILL MAKE IT INTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN UNDER DIFFERENT POSITIONS

MALACHI 3 VS 18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

NEW HEAVEN = LEADERSHIP.
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN = THE EARTH UNDER THE NEW LEADERSHIP ( THE 144,000 WILL RULE FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER. THE EARTH BELONGS TO THEM NOW. THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH )

OTHER PART OF THE QUESTION ABOUT JOHN THE BAPTIST. JOHN THE BAPTIST WAS A PRETTY RIGHTEOUS MAN, HOWEVER HE IS STILL A HUMAN BEING WHO HAS THE ABILITY TO SIN. A MAN IS ONLY AS STRONG AS HIS WEAKEST LINK. SO THAT MEANS HE IS NOT THAT STRONG BECAUSE HIS WEAKEST LINK IS HIS SINFUL NATURE. HOWEVER IN HEAVEN THE NEW CONVENANT KICKS IN AND THE LAWS WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE INWARD PARTS ( HEBREWS 10 VS 16 ) OF THE 144,000, MEANING THEY CANNOT SIN AGAIN BECAUSE THEIR SINFUL NATURE HAS BEEN REMOVED. AND SEEING AS MAN IS ONLY AS STRONG AS HIS WEAKEST LINK AND THEY HAVE NO WEAK LINK, THAT MEANS WILL BE VERY POWERFUL AND HIGH RANKING.( YOU DONT GET ANY HIGHER THAN OWNING THE WORLD-PSALMS 37 VS 29. JOHN THE BAPTIST NEVER OWNED THE WORLD. )
But how can some pple inherit this world when Jesus Himself said this world will be destroyed and no stone shall be left on top of another.
Music/RadioWho is The Greatest Rapper Of All Time? by FXKing2012(op):
I believe the Notorious B.I.G. remains the all time greatest rapper due to his story telling ability, his unrivalled lyrical skills, his rhyming ability, his charisma and influence in the industry, and the fact that he helped so many upcoming artistes at the time to blow.
The likes of 112, Jay z, Naz, Lil' Cease, Da brat, Maze, foxy brown, Jada Kiss, Lil' Kim, etc etc were all heavily infuenced by Biggie. No other rapper has ever influenced so many the way Biggie did; litttle wonder he was so loved and missed.

What is your opinion on this?
