ABOUT VALENTINE DAY A common hagiography describes Saint Valentine as a priest of Rome or as the former Bishop of Terni, an important town of Umbria, in central Italy. While under house arrest of Judge Asterius, and discussing his faith with him, Valentinus (the Latin version of his name) was discussing the validity of Jesus. The judge put Valentinus to the test and brought to him the judge's adopted blind daughter. If Valentinus succeeded in restoring the girl's sight, Asterius would do whatever he asked. Valentinus laid his hands on her eyes and the child's vision was restored. Immediately humbled, the judge asked Valentinus what he should do. Valentinus replied that all of the idols around the judge's house should be broken, and that the judge should fast for three days and then undergo the Christian sacrament of baptism. The judge obeyed and, as a result, freed all the Christian inmates under his authority. The judge, his family, and his forty-four member household (family members and servants) were baptized. Valentinus was later arrested again for continuing to evangelize and was sent to the prefect of Rome, to the emperor Claudius Gothicus (Claudius II) himself. Claudius took a liking to him until Valentinus tried to convince Claudius to embrace Christianity, whereupon Claudius refused and condemned Valentinus to death, commanding that Valentinus either renounce his faith or he would be beaten with clubs, and beheaded. Valentinus refused and Claudius' command was executed outside the Flaminian Gate February 14, 269. An embellishment to this account states that before his execution, Saint Valentine wrote a note to Asterius's daughter signed "from your Valentine", which is said to have "inspired today's romantic missives". The Legenda Aurea of Jacobus de Voragine, compiled about 1260 and one of the most-read books of the High Middle Ages, gives sufficient. The very brief vita of St Valentine states that he was executed for refusing to deny Christ by the order of the "Emperor Claudius" in the year 269. Before his head was cut off, this Valentine restored sight and hearing to the daughter of his jailer. Jacobus makes a play with the etymology of "Valentine", "as containing valour". There are many other legends behind Saint Valentine. One is that in the 3rd century AD it is said that Valentine, who was a priest, defied the order of the emperor Claudius and secretly performed Christian weddings for couples so that the husbands wouldn't have to go to war. The legend claims that soldiers were sparse at this time so this was a big inconvenience to the emperor. The account mentions that in order "to remind these men of their vows and God's love, Saint Valentine is said to have cut hearts from parchment", giving them to these soldiers and persecuted Christians, a possible origin of the widespread use of hearts on St. Valentine's Day. Another legend is that Valentine refused to sacrifice to pagan gods. Being imprisoned for this, Valentine gave his testimony in prison and through his prayers healed the jailer's daughter who was suffering from blindness. On the day of his execution he left her a note that was signed, "Your Valentine". Saint Valentine of Rome was martyred on February 14 in AD 269. The Feast of Saint Valentine, also known as Saint Valentine's Day, was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in honour of the Christian martyr. English 18th-century antiquarians Alban Butler and Francis Douce, noting the obscurity of Saint Valentine's identity, suggested that Valentine's Day was created as an attempt to supersede the pagan holiday of Lupercalia (mid-February in Rome). This idea has lately been dismissed by other researchers, such as Professor Jack B. Oruch of the University of Kansas, Henry Ansgar Kelly of the University of California, Los Angeles and Associate Professor Michael Matthew Kaylor of the Masaryk University. |
Stories go round every year when February 14 approaches. Notable is the call on some religious groups to shun the celebrations relating to the day. As a realist, I personally do not reserve a particular day for any particular celebration. Every day is a new beginning and if anything need to be celebrated, it does not have to wait for a particular date. Birthday, Memorial Day, Christmas, Sallah, National Day, and even Valentine Day are all sets of numbers. However, I always accept verified truths about events and issues, not minding where the proclaimer originates. That I don't take ice cream do not mean that I do not accept that it is a product of milk. I will admit that ice cream is made from milk but I do not take ice cream than to tell you that I do not take ice cream because it is made from pork. Having said this, the propounders of Valentine Day Celebration have not in any way promoted or supported promiscuities and immoralities exhibited by some individuals on such celebrations. Pure love is rather preached and promoted. Now you know, teach others the truth or just mind your personal business and walk away. . . . "from your Valentine". |
I am a BIAFRAN, but, I believe in the likes of Ojukwu who were physically in the war front until the center could not hold . . . I would believe Nnamdi Kanu more if he were present in "Nigeria" making his revelations. Besides, is OBAMA an "American"? . . . |
If not that THIS IS NIGERIA, the cards are not really necessary. With adequate database, only your presence (your thumb-print) will be needed. However, THIS IS NIGERIA, where election results are out days before the election day. PRAY FOR NIGERIA IN DISTRESS ! please. |

If you dig the case, you may be surprised to discover that the so-called maid was deliberately used against the boy. This is not a crime, and the man should first apologize to the boy for the embarrassment. The boy deserve N20 M damage plus the agreed settlement. |

. . . Buhari is (was) a good man with good intent to the best of his EDUCATION and BACKGROUND. However, Nigeria is known for high-powered intellectuals, always armed with DOUBLE-EDGED SWORDS. Kemi Adeosun once lamented that the trusted close associates HELPED HER OUT . . . That has been the TRADITION in Nigeria. When you step on some SENSITIVE TOES, all the HELPS you received would be exposed. We shall continue to PRAY FOR NIGERIA IN DISTRESS. |
It is a pity. We all have to die some day, an I believe it was her time. But, ADVICE! With improvement in medical sciences today, such death could be prevented. Report such, and related conditions to medical experts. Though they may not be 100% trustworthy, their assistance could save lives. And, If you can, do not let ANYONE die in your presence with tears. That is the ONLY LAST. Give them HOPE and ENCOURAGEMENT even if you are doubtful. That really is the meaning of Resting in Peace. Everything else, including TRIBUTES are only for us the living (selfishness you may say) and CANNOT help the dead in any way. Take heart brother. |
Whether she is 5, 50, 55 or 58; whether she love or hate corruption; She should bear in mind that THIS IS NIGERIA ! Nigeria, where your close and trusted associates will Set You Up. You can ask Sister Kemi Adeosun what she think about Nigeria. |

I got call from my children's school that there are some suspected members of the dreaded boko haram in the state. Boarding schools have been ordered to release children to parents by 4.00 pm today while residents are called upon to be on the watch out. More updates as events (God Forbid) unfolds. We should continue to pray for peace in Nigeria. |
Good move. But, It need more effort than just promulgation and mere enforcement of law. Other states could do that because they have excess workforce. In Kano state, most indigenes are either lazy or not qualified for the available jobs. I know of one renowned, indigenous secondary school that tried to enforce such in the past. In less than one term, parents, who are mostly indigenes too, embarked on withdrawal of their wards simply because the 'new teachers' could not deliver. Today, the school has more than 85% non-indigenous workforce. This applies in ever other industry in Kano state. The success of such move requires self-emancipation which takes a longer process to achieve. Omooba77: |
Take a moment and reflect on what Nigeria is today and what you as an individual want it to be. Stop blaming politics, politicians or anything. Offer your prayers and wishes through this thread because, God says: Behold, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; The things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create; For I create Nigeria to be a joy and its people to be a delight; I will rejoice in Nigeria and exult in my people. No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there, or the sound of crying; No longer shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not round out his full lifetime; He dies a mere youth who reaches but a hundred years, and he who fails of a hundred shall be thought accursed. They shall live in the houses they build, and eat the fruit of their labour. |

Better, at least. In 2012, at least 2 professors, some senior staff members and many others were systematically eliminated at Bayero University, Kano and nobody said a thing about it till date. We're watching, and God is aware. |
sex is a wonderful and incredible phenomenon. sex is never a sin. it is naturally made for for human appreciation and procreation. it's biochemistry. teenagers need to get it right from us, or wrong from them. |
What they are not teaching girls when it comes to sex education Ted Malanda Fri 09th Dec 2016 10:42:08am Sex education I have many women friends who are single mums. A good number of them got that baby in high school, right after school or in their first year of campus. It was their very first time to have sex. Most were victims of date rape. Now, a woman can only get pregnant if she is ovulating. Ovulation is chaos, even for mature women with six degrees. It doesn't matter whether you are a banker, a prison's officer or a member of the church choir. Biology is a bitch, and if that egg is crawling down the fallopian tube, the body insanely demands that it ought to be twangad and fertilised. It is an overwhelming feeling, even for adult women. And men, like dogs and bulls, are wired to sniff it. Now picture a teenage girl whose knowledge of ovulation is based on a silly diagram on the blackboard and not the madness, the virulent heat burning her body. This, in my view, should form the basis of sex education, not that story about ukicheza na vijana shauri yako. If I had a teenage daughter, I would sit her down and explain this ovulation thing. We all want our daughters to remain chaste until the night of the wedding. Sorry brethren, but that's not how biology works. https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/ureport/article/2000226291/what-they-are-not-teaching-girls-when-it-comes-to-sex-education |
but come to think of it, what can you give to God? Besides, he demands of us more than just a material TITHE. And remember, we are people of the NEW TESTAMENT, not of old. DharmyYinks: |

I have done my MTN more than three (3) times and now, I am disconnected: that I need to register again. I have visited four (4) different MTN centers this morning, defying the freezing cold and blinding dust in Kano presently, only to meet a very large crowd at each center. I will not join such crowd (fear of BH). Now, I have decided to LEAVE for good (porting). 1. Could anyone please suggest a better alternatve? 2. Can I port while my line is disconnected? 3. Will porting affect my bank account (I used the line for band transaction, including mobile banking, etc) Contributions appreciate in advace. |
