Crime / When Security Agencies Sell Arms To Criminals by gabonsky: 10:48am On Nov 26, 2017
Recent newspapers headlines are pointers to the realities of arms influx into Nigeria – ‘Bad elements in the security agencies selling arms to bandits – DSS’; ‘DSS blames military, security agencies for proliferation of arms’; ‘DSS, customs accuse politicians, states of stockpiling arms’; and ‘three policemen arrested for selling AK-47 rifles to robbers’ amongst others.

These incredible stories emanated from a recent revelation to the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Customs and Excise and National Intelligence investigating the influx of small arms and light weapons into the country. At the Legislative Hearing, the Directorate of State Services (DSS) and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) pointedly accused politicians and some states of stockpiling arms ahead of 2019 general elections. The two agencies also claimed that Nasarawa, Benue, Taraba and Plateau states have had the highest presence. According to the DSS, the arms, classified as small and light weapons, were already being used by some individuals to perpetrate violence in parts of the country.

Furthermore, the DSS said that, “We had a situation where in one of the armouries belonging to one of the armed forces, many pistols just got missing with quantities of ammunition and all the pistols are new. In the armoury, no place was broken into, but the weapons were missing…” While the Comptroller- General of Customs, Hameed Ali lamented the porous borders and dearth of necessary equipment as a challenge stemming the flow of weapons into the country.

Other instances that have buttressed these sad tales have been reported interception and seizure of a consignment of pump action rifles alleged to have originated from China through Turkey, along the Mile 2 – Apapa Road, Lagos by the operatives of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS); and the discovery of an illegal arms factory in Agbada, Nenwe in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State during the first quarter of 2011 by the State Security Service (SSS), Enugu State Command.

Besides, these stories (of arms lack of control) are not new: they are just unchecked by the authorities in Abuja. Nigeria’s secret service, for instance, in October 2010 reportedly intercepted the shipment of 13 containers filled with rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives and ammunitions. The cargo was said to be on its way to Gambia and had begun its journey from a port in Iran. Also, sometime in June 2009, there were several media reports that eagle eyed security operatives impounded a Ukrainian plane, fully loaded with guns and ammunitions when it made a technical landing at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport at about 2:00.a.m on Wednesday 17th June. This roll call is real, not fiction!

In the same vein, the number of recovered arms from robbers; not discounting the lingering militancy, terrorism, and kidnapping which is now a profession to the extent that some state governments are passing death sentences to check the issue and other criminal activities further expose the magnitude of the influx of illegal arms in the country. So, although the above have not only shown the magnitude of the influx of illegal arms in the country, it also shows that the problem has been with us for a long time. This situation is frightening because weaponry is the instrument of violence, which raises serious questions about the security of lives and property in the country.

As a matter of fact, they help to explain the spate of armed robberies with precision across the country; tugs following politicians with AK47 to protect them, which have occasioned pre- and post-election violence as some politicians have resorted to ‘not winning but capturing states’; the Boko Haram uprising using explosives to blow up places, guns and other arms to kill innocent Nigerians that has led to the massacre of human beings like animals, with its attendant social dislocation and threatened peace; and other killings with gun by various identified and unidentified groups. The unresolved murder of high profile citizens including Chief Bola Ige, Funsho Williams, A.K. Dikibo, Marshal Harry and many others has its root in this jungle-like life Nigerians endure.

The trend has also fuelled communal clashes, religious and ethnic crises in Ife, Jos, Kaduna and Taraba, as well as farmers-nomads conflicts in Benue and Nassarwa States, among others where hundreds of lives have been lost.

Indeed illegal arms have led to the rising rate of criminality and citizens are endangered. What a brand Nigeria has become in the comity of nations, especially in Africa?

Therefore, no doubt the proliferation of arms and ammunitions in Nigeria is a scourge, which the Federal Government of Nigeria must fight to pull the country from the precipice of danger.

However, the government agencies that should control the influx of arms into Nigeria appear helpless and have embarked on a blame game washing their dirty linen in the public, instead of coming up with ingenious solutions to curb the menace.

The alarms raised by the DSS, the Nigeria Customs Service, among others only show dereliction of responsibility. They have a responsibility to curb the menace they are complaining about.

When security and intelligence agencies of government begin to lament about arms influx into a country with diverse security challenges, who will the people report to? If they have problems with their operations, they should approach the commander-in-chief through their service chiefs and comptrollers. The people will be frightened to hear that their security and intelligence agencies are incapacitated and helpless, in this regard.

Against the backdrop that Nigeria occupies a respectable position in the affairs of Africa, it should get to the roots of illegal arms deals. Therefore, instead of lamenting, the DSS should be more proactive in safeguarding citizens from the abuse of arms by coming up with ingenious solutions and implement same to rid the country of the menace of small arms and light weapons proliferation.

As such, the DSS should put its house in order, cooperate with other relevant MDAs and international agencies, and perform its duties to curb arms proliferations. So, apart from open declaration that the Police will fight back arms of all categories, government should find lasting solutions and go beyond the routine to stamp out the influx of illegal arms in the country.

Security agencies should be more vigilant, politicians should avoid redefining democracy to mean unfettered freedom and exacerbated violence; rather should be less desperate, more considerate and hold people’s lives with grace. Ipso facto, the DSS should ensure that whatever arms procured are properly acquired to avoid abuse and the legal dealers should be tracked to ensure that arms do not get into the wrong hands. Also, government should audit licensed gun holders; and encourage those who are possessing unregistered arms to do so within a specified period.

For the resources needed, the DSS, Immigration and Customs should get operational vehicles and the necessary equipment such as scanning machines to stem the flow of weapons into the country. Specifically, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) must be serious about the border patrol unit and ensure that the porous borders (air, sea, and land) are well manned by ethical officers.

The military should be sterner in monitoring their men, especially those fighting insurgency, on peacekeeping and various arms bearing operations.

At the international level, Nigeria should enter into appropriate pact with origin and manufacturing countries on the movement of arms and ammunition. These are believed will reduce influx of arms into the country and keep its use in check.

This is unadulterated nonsense that can only be spilled by someone far removed from how useless Majority (read: all) of Nigerian clergymen are to Nigerians

this pathetic excuse if a human blamed an aircraft for the collapse of his church that killed hundreds, saw a female winning the US election and finding it challenging to pass bills; sent "prayer water" to Sierra Leone as cure for Ebola amongst other bullsheets he's gotten away with
keep your parable to yourself

I dont know if you have a personal beef with PTBJ and i am quite sure that you have not seen or have a private conversation with the man before so i quite understand your frustration wheather he is fake or real.

What i am trying to say is that we should look beyond our personal perception about him and used his personality and work ethnics to export to other continents as our own products and i can categorically tell you that He is the most popular Man both in Africa and beyond. (Note: you can make your own research on that).

These Men of God are people like you and that they also make great mistake and error.

God bless you bro and Nigeria at large...

PTBJ is a great access to Nigeria but we have failed to used him as our own products to export to other continents. Let us forget whether he is fake or real.

I have travelled to two continents of the world and I know how influential and popular prophet TB Joshua name is over there and how to they are eager to meet, work or partner with him to extend his hands to their continents.

Nigeria don't know what they have until the man is gone to meet his creator and you don't have this type of man often among you.

I am speaking with parable to our Nation.

God bless Nigeria....

Investment / Will Bitcoin Crash Again? by gabonsky: 8:37am On Nov 25, 2017
I’ve been into Bitcoin for a few years now and I have to say that your question made me smile.

Here’s why.

Don't Buy Bitcoin. It's Going To Crash!!!

This has become a running joke (as the video is intended).

I believe Bitcoin is a great store of value and will be considered digital gold in a few years - many of us think of it that way now. But Bitcoin ‘corrects’ all the time, this will never be a smooth ride up.

We recently have been hitting ATH’s (All Time Highs) regularly, but past performance doesn’t guarantee future trends.

The safest way to invest, is to only put in what you are comfortable losing.

Israel to deport 40,000 African asylum seekers ‘without their consent,’ many to Rwanda

Israel will begin deporting 20,000 African asylum seekers, mostly from Eritrea and the Sudan, to an unnamed third-party country “without their consent,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday in a cabinet meeting. According to Israeli media the refugees will be sent to Rwanda, in return for which Israel will pay the African nation $5,000 per head.

Using the term “infiltrators” to refer to Africans who crossed into Israel through the Sinai, Netanyahu said he had reached “stage three” of a plan to remove all asylum seekers.

“Regarding infiltrators, we will discuss one of the aspects of this topic at the cabinet meeting,” Netanyahu said. “Our policy towards infiltrators is three staged: Stage one is halting. We built a fence and enacted laws that completely blocked the flow of infiltrators and today we have zero infiltrators. Second stage is removal. We removed approximately 20,000 out of the existing infiltrators using various measures. Stage three is increased removal.”

The prime minister added that Israel will no longer require asylum seekers to sign a document authorizing their deportation, a controversial practice done in the past and known as “voluntary deportation,” in which Africans were sent to third-party countries Rwanda and Uganda. Refugee groups have alleged the deportations were coerced; the refugees faced imprisonment in Israel, or deportation.

“This removal is enabled thanks to an international agreement I achieved, which allows us to remove the 40,000 remaining infiltrators without their consent,” Netanyahu continued. “This is very important. It will enable us later to make the ‘Holot’ facility unnecessary and to use part of the vast resources we allocate there for inspectors and increased removal. That is why we are succeeding here.

But our goal is to continue removing significantly more then what we have until now.”

Holot is a desert detention facility. At Holot asylum seekers may leave during the day, but must return by evening to be locked behind Holot’s gates. Under orders announced Sunday, the facility will be closed in the next three months. In the weeks leading up to the shut-down, the refugees say they believe they will be deported.

“For years we have been saying the Holot detention facility was not built for a proper purpose, it is meant to break the spirits of asylum seekers [and force us] to leave,” said refugee organizer Mutasim Ali from Darfur on social media. Ali is the first and only Sudanese national who was granted asylum by Israel in a surprise move in 2016. Before receiving his protective status he resided in Holot prison for one year.

The Israeli aid group Hotline for Refugees estimates of the 40,000 African asylum seekers 73 percent are from Eritrea and 19 percent are from Sudan. Those from Eritrea have fled a dictatorship where compulsory conscription is likened to forced servitude by most refugee organizations. Africans fled Sudan to escape a genocide.

Writing from Tel Aviv where the majority of African asylum seekers in Israel live, Bsow Bsow, 32, who fled Sudan for Israel in 2011, told Mondoweiss anxiety is high as Africans brace for a mass uprooting. “First, everyone is very afraid, especially the woman.”

“Today I receive too many phone calls from women asking if it’s going to be the same as when they [Israel] deported Southern Sudanese,” Bsow said, referencing the 2012-2013 deportation of 700-2,000 Africans from South Sudan, of whom 500 were children.

Those deportations were announced shortly after South Sudan was established as an independent country. Unlike South Sudan, Israel does not have diplomatic relations with Sudan or Eritrea, and is unable to land planes full of deportees on the ground in those countries. As a result, Israel negotiated the practice of third party countries accepting asylum seekers in exchange for $5,000 per person, according to Israel’s Channel 10 and Haaretz, which reported the secret agreement over the weekend.
A year after the Africans were transferred to South Sudan, the Israeli daily Maariv reported that 22, including children, had died.

Some journalists and Israeli advocates for refugees have traveled to Africa, reconnecting with deported asylum seekers. Their reports provide insight on what Africans can expect once forced to board a plane.

Orit Marom, who works for the Israeli group ASSAF, flew to Ethiopia in 2013 to locate a Sudanese family she knew. They were living in a cramped one-room apartment with relatives. She recounted for the Jerusalem Post:

“We had the fate of these children in our hands, we had the ability to take in these 500 children, and instead of deciding that they would have normal lives and the basic rights children have everywhere, we took them and we threw them to hell. We turned their world upside down, tossing them to a fate of hunger, sickness, and death.”

Three Eritreans who were deported to Rwanda or Uganda were later killed in Libya in 2015 by ISIS, reportedly after seeking to cross the Mediterranean for Europe with other refugees. The three that were taken prisoner and executed by ISIS were identified over social media by a distant relative who lives in Israel, according to +972 Magazine.

Politics / Top 10 Most Murderous African Presidents Of All Times by gabonsky: 4:24pm On Nov 20, 2017
Some made horrible decisions, others were just bad presidents, a few were really bloodthirsty extremists, whilst a couple were warmongers. All of these guys are a mix who in the last 130 years have been the architects of the most horrific genocides, systematic murders, blockades, brutal wars, and policy reforms history has ever recorded.

Where to begin? Maybe an icebreaker for you next dinner party? Did you know the word “genocide” was coined in 1943 to describe when the Armenians were slaughtered haphazardly by Turkish leader Ismail Enver? Until then there was no specific word for it in our language. It makes me think about how much more cognizant we’ve become in this last century to these events. So, a quick toast between you and I to a more peaceable future where less of what follows below is allowed to happen. Sit back, but don’t relax.

Mengistu Haile-Mariam (400,000–1.5 million deaths)

Breakdown: As president of Ethiopia and colonel of “the Derg” (communist militia) Mengitsu systematically killed those against him in the “Red Terror” campaign.

Mengistu Haile Mariam is (as in still alive) a politician who presided over Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991. The way he got into power was by smothering the previous president Haile Selassie although he has denied those rumors. His biggest claim to fame is the Ethiopian Red Terror which was a campaign of repression led by the Derg (communist militia in Ethiopia). In his introductory speech Mengitsu yelled, “Death to counterrevolutionaries! Death to the EPRP!” Then he took three bottles filled with blood and threw them to the ground.

It was an auspicious beginning to say the least. Thousands were killed and found dead on the streets in the years that followed. Much of the murdering can be attributed to the friendly neighborhood watch there known as “Kebeles”. As if killing innocents wasn’t enough they would then charge the family a tax to return the dead body to them. The tax was aptly named “the wasted bullet”! Are you serious Mengitsu? However there was an even more gruesome fate of being left on the street where wild hyenas would fight over the dead. The campaign has been described as one of the worst mass murders ever in Africa. Mengitsu is even known to have garroted people to death.

Yakubu Gowon (1.1 million deaths)

Breakdown: 1 million civilians on the wrong side of a blockade caused by a war of secession in Nigeria and 100,000 soldiers who died in that war.

It starts as many sad stories do with precious beautiful oil. It had been found in the Niger delta where tensions were already high between the Eastern region (led by Ojukwu) and the rest of the country (governed by Yakubu). A dummy agreement was signed between them called the “Aburi Accord”, but it meant nothing to either leader. Yakubu started to put pressure on the region, and tested how much sway he had in the area versus Ojukwu. Well Ojukwu being no slouch declared secession from the rest of Nigeria and became the “Republic of Biafra”. This began a war that caused the deaths of 100,000 soldiers, and much worse, a blockade on the region which starved 1 million civilians.

Idi Amin (25,000–30,000 deaths)

The 3rd President of Uganda was responsible for about 250,000 deaths which were a result of his regime of terror marked by torture, extra-judicial executions, corruption and ethnic persecution. He held power from 1972 to 1979 when he fled the country due to the defeat against Tanzania which he attacked one year earlier. He found refuge in Libya and then in Saudi Arabia where he died in 2003.

Sani Abacha (100,000–200,000 deaths)

A report on corruption, published in July 1997 by the Berlin-based organization Transparency International listed Nigeria as the most corrupt nation in the world. Abacha took office in during a military coup occurred in November 1993, following the annulment of presidential elections in June that year. General Sani Abacha, the Armed Forces Chief of Staff, took power. He annulled the organs of state, banned political parties and dismantled the democratic structures. International pressure forced General Abacha to announce a three-year timetable for the transition to democracy in October 1995, but the plans were plagued by repeated delays. Local elections held in March 1997 were five months later than planned. Only five political parties were registered of the 15 who applied. Nigerian commission responsible for the transition to democracy announced that Presidential elections would be held on August 1, 1998. A handover to civilian rule is due to occur by the beginning of October. It was a military tribunal which ordered the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and nine other activists in November 1995, the 26 faced the death penalty.

Ahmed Sékou Touré (100,000–150,000 deaths)

Touré was a Guinean political leader; head of the PDG, he was elected as the first President of Guinea, serving from 1958 to his death in 1984. Touré was one of the primary Guinean nationalists involved in gaining independence of the country from France.

In 1960, he declared his Democratic Party of Guinea (PDG) to be the only legal party in the state and ruled from then on as a virtual dictator. He was nominally re-elected to numerous seven year terms but Guinea had no other political parties, and he imprisoned, killed or exiled his strongest opposition leaders.

Charles Taylor (100,000–150,000 Deaths)

The former President of Liberia who was elected in 1997 (allegedly by terrorizing the population) has been connected with gross human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against the humanity in the civil war in the neighboring Sierra Leone as well as at home during the Second Liberian Civil War that lasted from 1999 to 2003. He is currently being trialed for his involvement in the Sierra Leone civil war at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Hissène Habré (80,000–100,000 Deaths)

Many say Hissène Habré did not do much but he is still considered a Dictator. He rose to power when Libya Invaded Chad. Habré’s troops defeated the Libyan troops and sent them packing in 1981. However many human rights groups hold Habré responsible for the killing of thousands of people. These killing include massacres against Hajerai and Zaghawa. The Humans rights watch charged him with torturing thousands of people and killing tens of thousands during his rule.

Francisco Macías Nguema (50,000–70,000 Deaths)

He is a son of a real witch doctor. Nguema was the first President of Guinea. During his reign he did some of the weirdest crimes against humanity, which include stalking his mistresses, former lovers and killing the intellectuals of his country. During his reign a third of the population of Guinea fled the country to escape his brutality. He ordered the killing of entire villages and households; it is also reported that during his time in office the county did not even have a development plan nor proper accounting for government funds. He trusted no one, he spend most of his time in his ancestral village, with the state money in his suitcase. He was later sentenced to death by his nephew Teodoro Obiang Nguema, who is still in power today.

Omar al-Bashir (30,000–40,000 Deaths)

He is a more recent case of Dictatorship, from the Sudan. He became famous in March 2009 when he was issued a warrant for arrest. He has been charged with 7 crimes against humanity. He planned and committed genocide against several ethnic groups such as Masalit and Zaghawa killing tens of thousand of people. He is regarded by many as one of the most murderous dictators ever.

Paul Biya (20,000- 30,000 deaths)

Paul Biya hails from Cameroon and he was born in February 13, 1933. Politics was always in Biya’s blood, he has managed to be [president for several terms. He has been president of Cameroon from November 1982. Biya has many Critics for his lack of public experiences, but Biya wields his sleeping powers like a tyrant. He rules with his authoritarian fist that lets him push any policy that he deems essentially necessary. He is one of the best Known examples of Authoritarianism. He has been associated with numerous kidnappings, corruption and murders of people who oppose him.

Health / Answers To 10 Of The Most INTIMATE Question That Women Always Ask (women Only) by gabonsky: 3:47pm On Nov 20, 2017
I am having a great deal of discharge. Is that normal?
“Yes. Discharge is a really good sign that your vagina is behaving as it should do. These mucous secretions are cleaning your vagina, and keeping it in a healthy state. The mucus should be clear or white and not have a strong smell to it.

The amount of discharge you produce depends on which point of your menstrual cycle you are at. Discharge is usually more plentiful and can be quite stringy when you’re ovulating, breastfeeding, or are sexually aroused. However, if you experience changes to your discharge, you should book an appointment with your GP or gynecologist.

For example, if it becomes curd-like and thick and you’re experiencing itching, it’s a sign you may have thrush. If there is a strong odour, like fish, it may be bacterial vaginosis. Any accompanying pain or other symptoms – such as blistering around the vagina need to be checked out. This may indicate a sexually transmitted infection.”

I get clots in my period. Is this something to worry about?
“Clotting will be normal for some women, however, it does show that your periods are heavier than they probably should be.

So why do clots happen? When it comes to menstruating, your body usually knows that this kind of bleeding is non-harmful, so it doesn’t need to clot in the usual way, as say when you cut your knee. Anti-coagulants usually thin the blood, allowing it flow freely. A heavy period overwhelms the natural anticoagulants – hence the clots.

Heavy, clotty periods can be very inconvenient, they can also be harmful to well-being. If a patient came to me with blood clots, I would be concerned she might be anaemic due to the heavy blood loss.

The first line of treatment would be tranexamic acid, which has a chemical action that reduces bleeding. Controlling your periods with oral contraceptives or the Mirena coil is another option.

The coil provides contraception and can lessen periods, although you should be aware that symptoms may get worse initially. If that doesn’t work, and you don’t wish to have children, there are other surgical options, such as an endometrial ablation. The latest techniques mean they can be done under local anaesthetic in day surgery, or if you prefer under a general anaesthetic. The overall success rate of this operation is about 80 per cent in stopping or lessening periods.”

I am worried that I smell when I have my period- should I use a bidet or douche?
“A bidet, fine. A douche, never. Douching – the practice of sluicing water up your vagina with a pumped device – is associated with a range of health problems. Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina (called vaginal flora), which can cause infections such as thrush or bacterial vaginosis. Even more worryingly, some studies have linked douching with increased rates of cervical cancer and ovarian cancer. Use unperfumed, gentle soaps to wash the vulva area daily, or more if needed during menstruation. It’s important to remember that the vagina itself is self-cleaning. The mucous discharge all women have is doing the job of keeping it clean and healthy. When it comes the inner mucosa of the vagina (the part inside the vulva) just water to wash away any menstrual blood or sweat is fine. This could be via bathing, a bidet, or the shower.

Just don’t douche! The vagina will sort itself out."

Why do I get a headache after sex?
“If you feel a bit headachey after sex, the first line of management would be to ensure that you have drunk enough water, as vigorous sex can cause dehydration. There is a phenomenon known as benign HAS (headaches associated with sexual activity). HAS is a rare condition – less than 3 per cent of all headaches reported – and it generally affects men more than women, although nobody can be certain how common it is, because people may be embarrassed about reporting it.

One theory is that the exertion of sex leads to the blood vessels dilating. Headaches can last a minute or two, or up to day.

If you do suffer from HAS, it’s important to discuss it with your GP – although headaches are usually benign, your doctor will want to rule out more serious conditions and there may be treatment available.”

Is it possible to be allergic to semen?
“Absolutely – it’s considered quite unusual, although one study has suggested the incidence could be as high as 12 per cent. Semen allergy, also known as seminal plasma hypersensitivity, generally affects women more than men and is caused by antibodies in women’s bodies recognising semen as harmful, and going into an overdrive response.

Women may experience inflammation, an itchy sensation and swelling of the genitals shortly after contact with semen. Luckily reactions tend be localised, and I’m not aware of any cases where women have gone into anaphylactic shock, although theoretically, this could happen.

For women who experience semen allergy, I usually recommend they stick to condoms. However, it can be tricky when women want to get pregnant. They may experience discomfort until conception. In severe cases, assisted reproductive technology has to be utilised.”

Does post-baby sex hurt?
“It can do. Often there are issues like bruising from birth trauma, or an episiotomy. You should only attempt to have sex when you are ready – six weeks is usually recommended as the healing process should be well under way, although some women will have sex before then, while others will wait longer. The other thing to bear in mind is that just after you have given birth your oestrogen levels are very low, which can thin the vaginal skin making it drier and causing discomfort. Breastfeeding also dampens down oestrogen, so that can be an issue for nursing mothers. Use a water-soluble lubricant to lessen problems with post-partum sex.”

When I’m having sex I often get ‘fanny farts’ - any ideas how to stop them?
“This is simply air getting trapped in your vagina. It happens when air is pushed in during penetrative sex and then released, like a cork being released from a bottle. Women who have had babies are more prone to fanny farts and certain sexual positions, such as when the woman is on all fours, means it’s more likely. You can expect that embarrassing sound during fast, furious sex, so taking it slow might reduce the likelihood. Learning to laugh about them might be easier!”

I’m 60 and still want to have sex, But I’m so dry. What can I do?
“Vaginal dryness is a real issue post-menopause. A vaginal moisturiser can help, alongside a water-based lubricant to be used when having sex. HRT containing oestrogen may also restore moisture levels, however, not all women can take HRT and many are wary because of the small but elevated risk of breast cancer associated with taking hormones. Another option is to use topical oestrogen. This can be applied straight to the vaginal area, which although not ideal, has the advantage of being effective at lower doses. Anyone wary of oestrogen may prefer this as a smaller amount reaches your bloodstream and it can be more effective than oral hormonal regimens at getting to the place that needs it to be.

For those who want to avoid oestrogen completely, and find that creams and lubricants work for them, a new treatment called The MonaLisa Touch could be the right choice. The laser works on the tissue of the vaginal mucosa, boosting collagen and restoring function. This simple procedure is performed in clinic, with three treatments often required alongside a top-up treatment once a year. Success rates are about 85 per cent.”

Can you get blackheads on your vagina?
“The vagina is skin, just like anywhere else. As it’s usually quite warm and damp down there, you can get blocked pores and lumps and bumps, as you can in other areas. Pimples or blackheads on the vulva area (where your pubic hair grows) can be caused by shaving and waxing in particular. As blackheads are blocked hair follicles, it’s unlikely that you would get them on the inner mucosa of the vagina (the moist part of the vagina within the labia majora, the outer lips of the vagina), but there are other reasons for lumps and bumps, such as blocked glands for example, or ‘Fordyce spots’, which are small white or yellow bumps in the inner part of your vulva and the labia minora (the smaller lips surrounding the vagina). These are not harmful, and they can accumulate as you age.

Then there are varicose veins, which are associated with pregnancy and age, which look like bluey raised lumps. Although most lumps and bumps are not serious, it is essential that you see your GP, who may refer you to a gynaecologist. In rare cases, a darkening patch may indicate pre-cancer cells, so it needs to be checked by an expert in gynaecological cancers.”

I’ve got a huge spot ‘down there’. Should I squeeze it?
“It sounds like a Bartholin’s cyst. There are two glands at the entrance of the vagina that secrete a fluid by means of a duct that keeps the mucosa inside the vulva moist. On occasion, this duct can become blocked and a cyst will form. About two in 100 women will develop one of these. It may not be painful initially, however, it can become infected. If that happens, the cyst will become uncomfortable and start emitting a smelly discharge. My recommendation would be not to squeeze, as this may spread the infection. Go to your GP and ask for a referral to a gynaecologist who will be able to treat the cyst. This will be done by either marsupialisation or a word catheter.

Marsupialisation simply refers to the surgical drainage of the cyst and is usually performed under a general anaesthetic, so you’re asleep throughout. A small incision is made by the doctor, and the cyst is allowed to drain. Dissolvable stitches are then used and healing occurs over a month or so.

Alternatively, the cyst can be drained using a small rubber tube called a word catheter under local anaesthetic. A small cut is made in the swelling to drain the fluid or pus and the catheter is then inserted into the gland and held in place by a tiny water-filled balloon. This stays in place for four weeks to allow complete drainage and healing.”

Health / Breathing Dirty Air May Raise Miscarriage Risk by gabonsky: 6:05am On Nov 20, 2017
Smog might raise a woman’s risk of miscarriage early in her pregnancy, a new study suggests.

Chronic exposure seemed to increase that risk by more than 10 percent, according to researchers who tracked hundreds of pregnancies among couples in Michigan and Texas, United States (U.S.).

The study was published Nov. 16 in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

“We found that both ozone and particles in the air were related to an increased risk of early pregnancy loss,” said senior researcher Pauline Mendola. She is an investigator with the U.S.

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Mendola and her team reviewed data from a long-term study from the U.S. National Institutes of Health that followed 501 couples between 2005 and 2009.

There were 343 couples who achieved pregnancy, but 98 (28 percent) lost the pregnancy within the first 18 weeks, the investigators said.

The team estimated the couples’ exposure to smog based on pollution levels detected in their residential communities, and then looked to see if the bad air may have had any effect on pregnancy.

The findings showed that exposure to ozone appeared to increase risk of pregnancy loss by 12 percent, and exposure to fine airborne particles raised it by 13 percent. That was even after the researchers compensated for other factors that can affect the health of a pregnancy, such as age, race, education, income, weight, fertility, and caffeine and multivitamin intake.

The researchers estimated that nine of the 98 lost pregnancies could have been saved had the expectant mother been exposed to lower levels of smog or none at all.

No one knows exactly why smog exposure is associated with pregnancy loss, Mendola said. And the study did not prove that smog exposure caused miscarriages, just that there was an association.

Inflammation and oxidative stress prompted by air pollution could jeopardize a pregnancy in a number of possible ways, Mendola said.

It could harm fetal development, interfere with implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus, or cause problems with development of the placenta.

“We don’t know because we can’t measure that with these data,” Mendola explained. “All we can say is we see an association between air pollution exposures in pregnancy and the risk of loss.”

One women’s health expert offered another theory.

There’s a possibility that toxins in air pollution might cross the placenta and directly harm the fetus, said Dr. Jill Rabin, co-chief of ambulatory care with Women’s Health Programs-PCAP Services at Northwell Health in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

“It’s incomprehensible that something you’re breathing in that’s toxic wouldn’t affect young developing tissue,” Rabin said. “It’s conceivable some of those toxins would be able to get through the placenta and to the baby.”

Mendola said she wants to test this finding in larger groups of people, and also explore more deeply the biological ways air pollution could harm a pregnancy.

In the meantime, pregnant women should try to limit their exposure to heavy smog, she advised.

“When you have air-quality alerts, we would say it’s probably prudent to suggest that pregnant women adapt their behavior,” Mendola said. “Avoid outdoor activities, the same as people with asthma or respiratory disease would.”

“The results of the study are not surprising since air pollution has been shown to be associated with multiple health issues in adults including, but not limited to, pulmonary [lung] and cardiac conditions,” said Dr. Alan Mensch. He’s senior vice president of medical affairs at Syosset Hospital, in Syosset, N.Y.

“Avoidance of air pollution, especially during those days when there are air-pollution alerts, is obviously also an important factor for preserving a viable pregnancy,” he added.

A boy gets stuck in a 20-cm-wide gap between two walls being rescued in Shanhuang village of Guigang city, Southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

A left-behind boy in Shanhuang village of Southwest China's Guangxi was saved by firefighters more than one hour after being trapped in a 20-cm-wide gap between two walls on Saturday.

The 8-year-old boy got stuck in the gap while playing hide-and-seek game at around 4:00 pm. He went into the gap, whose width ranges from 10 cm to 40 cm, from its widest end but got trapped in the middle.

The firefighters arrived at 5:14 pm after receiving an emergency call at 4:37 pm. After comforting the nervous boy, they covered his head and body with quilt to shield him from any possible injury and successfully got him out after 10 minutes by widening the gap around him.

Science/Technology / The 9 Inventions Americans Think Are Mostly Likely To Happen In 50 Years by gabonsky: 12:36am On Nov 18, 2017
Self-driving cars, human-like robots, cures for cancer and teleportation. What's mostly like to happen by 2067?

Will your car will be driving you in 50 years? Will you 3D print a new jacket or bag at home, or see a cure for cancer happen in your lifetime? Or, do you think you'll be able to vacation on the moon?

Fluent surveyed 3,240 American adults about which inventions they think are most likely to occur in the next 50 years, and the results are interesting to say the least.

Most likely to happen?

Global WiFi coverage, say 54% of Americans, followed by self-driving cars being widely available and used. And right behind that, a medical technology that would save the lives of tens of millions globally: a cure for cancer.

Interestingly, some of the easier-looking items on the list are farther down, in terms of percentage of Americans who think they'll happen.

For instance, powering the entire planet with renewable resources within 50 years is doable, though not by any means guaranteed. California, for instance, plans to be fully renewable by 2045, and several countries are hitting 100% renewable for individual days or weeks.

Only 43% of Americans believe it's possibly, however. In fact, a recent study indicates that 139 countries could be 100% renewable by 2050.

On the other hand, while WiFi will be in plenty of places -- assuming the protocol still exists in 2067 -- it's unlikely to cover nature reserves. Or Antarctica for that matter.

For human-like robots, Americans seem pretty in tune with what's possible. 36% say we'll see them within 50 years.

People do think self-driving cars are more likely to be widely available, but I'm surprised the number is not higher. Only 47% of Americans think they'll be widely available in 50 years, which is surprising given that multiple companies are working on the technology and we already see self-driving vehicles in limited tests on public streets.

That's shockingly low.

Fortunately, sanity prevails when it comes to magic like teleportation travel.

Star Trek and entangled particles aside, teleporting large masses of matter is more magic than science at this point. And only 12% of Americans think it will be doable by 2067.

Fluent surveyed 3,240 adults aged 18 and up in October this year, and says the respondents were randomly selected and data were weighted to US Census 2010 population distribution.

Career / 7 Rules To Follow If You Want To Live A Life Without Regrets by gabonsky: 12:27am On Nov 18, 2017
What do you think when a plane you're traveling on hits turbulence? Maybe you pray, maybe you mentally recite the excellent safety statistics of flying, or maybe you distract yourself with daydreams. But chances are excellent you don't have the same reaction as author Ryan Holiday.

"When I am on a plane and the turbulence hits, when a car veers out into traffic, when I hear about someone I know who died suddenly: I don't get scared. I just think, 'If this is it, all right,'" he reported on Thrive Global recently.

That probably strikes some as odd, but you have to admit, it's a nice place to be. Holiday might be only 30, but when he's confronted with the prospect of life's end, he can honestly report he feels no regret.

How did he get to this happy point? In the lengthy post, he offers a whopping 76 rules that have helped guide him to a full and fulfilling life. It's well worth a read (as is what scientists and superachievers have to say about avoiding regret), but to get you started here's a sampling of some of Holiday's best rules.

1. Do ridiculous things.
"Some of the best decisions of my life came out of total irresponsibility and whim," confesses Holiday. "My wife and I got a dog because I was reading a book about how Pope Leo X had a pet elephant named Hanno. That'd be a funny name for a dog, I thought. A week later, we had a miniature dachshund puppy. One of the best things I ever did."

2. Choose the job that will teach you the most.
How do you choose a career that you won't regret? Ask which will teach you the most. "This is how I have evaluated my career and job opportunities (and book projects, too). There are lots of ways to make money, fewer real opportunities to learn," reports Holiday.

3. Steer clear of charlatans and the toxic.
All I can add to this bit of advice from Holiday is, Amen! "Regular friend purges are a must," he says. "So are influence purges (the sources of information you follow). You become whom you know. You conform to your surroundings. Make sure those two facts are taking you in a direction you want to go."

4. Value the quiet moments.
A well-lived life doesn't mean a life jam-packed with adventures and achievements. It means a life in which you take the time to appreciate what you have. "It's in the quiet, still moments that we feel what matters in life. Standing on the shore of a lake. Looking out over a canyon. Resting your head against someone else's. It's a shortage of these moments that give rise to the feeling that we haven't lived enough, that we have to keep going. Seeking them out, encouraging them is what makes you feel like you've done plenty," insists Holiday.

5. Have a philosophy.
No, life philosophies aren't only for the great and the learned. "Pete Carroll talks about his turning point as a coach, when he realized he was just winging it. So he stopped and wrote down his entire coaching philosophy. Now he has something to measure himself against. Well, what's yours? Don't wing it through your 20s. Focus. Live by something," Holiday instructs.

6. Don't compare yourself with other people.
Seriously. Just don't. It will make you miserable, no matter how outwardly successful you are. "Caesar famously wept at the feet of a statue of Alexander the Great," Holiday points out. Now they're both gone. You will be someday soon too. So, in the meantime, "who cares whether so-and-so did this or that earlier than you? Who cares that so-and-so had more?"

7. Think about death.
"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart," Steve Jobs famously said. Holiday agrees, advising: "Don't shy away from thinking about death. Think about it a lot."

Investment / Blockchain Is Giving The 'internet Of Things' Space Another Boost by gabonsky: 12:19am On Nov 18, 2017
The Internet of Things and blockchain technology are creating a powerful combination.

As the digital world becomes more and more intertwined with reality, we will continue to see the clever adoption of internet connected services into our daily lives. At the core of this evolution is the concept of "The Internet of Things" (IoT), pegged by many as the "next big shift" in consumer and enterprise technology that will drive our society forwards.

By 2020, it is estimated that there will be over 20 billion connected devices online.

The question many are asking is what does this really mean for schools? Offices? Public utilities? How will fusing more technology with our lives empower us to be better humans and get more done?

With billions of internet enabled machines integrated in our homes and workplaces, we will be able to automate monotonous functions, observe cultural data patterns, and make systems far more efficient. The phrase is far more than just a buzzword. If we execute correctly, we can fundamentally disrupt entire industries (agriculture, construction). We can build safer streets, make more efficient farms, and entirely rewrite the experience of life.

There is a massive opportunity for entrepreneurs and incumbent technologists to develop IoT devices, thereby enhancing some of life's most boring and monotonous functions for the masses. And this enticing opportunity has drawn in a wide and talented pool of makers (engineers, designers, marketers, etc.) who are excited and eager to build the future faster.

One of the big bets for the IoT community, however, is that we can securely and safely store the huge quantities of data being sent to and from these appliances. The threat of cyber hackers, notorious for placing malware inside of internet connected devices like security cameras and computer monitors, is alive and top of mind, especially within major corporations who carry big, important data.

If we cannot even guarantee security and safety of our data today, how will we be able to create an infrastructure/standard for a digitally connected world when there are billions, if not trillions, of connected nodes in the network?

The answer, luckily, lies in the advanced development of blockchain technology that is breathing new life into the IoT movement, making a "faraway future" feel more and more like an inevitable component of reality.

At a high level, what you have to understand about blockchain is that it is a distributed network that maintains a verifiable, secure "ledger" to log, store, and access information. Unlike centralized systems, blockchain ledgers are immutable, meaning no single individual can uproot the system and make any changes without majority approval.

Effectively, they create a shared governance structure, "an optimal environment for IoT networks where there can be trust, anonymity, and effective contracts between parties without any single vendor being in charge," says Paul Fremantle from the University of Portsmouth.

Above that, implementations of blockchain could also enable players in the IoT space to begin monetizing and collaborating with their data.

Streamr, a startup built on Ethereum Smart Contracts, allows companies to tokenize their streaming data, enabling a whole new way for machines (internet connected devices) and people to trade and exchange data. Their model hinges on the idea that, with all of this new data from IoT devices, like self driving cars, being compiled and collected, surely companies and individuals should have the ability to monetize it. On the other side, Streamr provides a complete system for developing real-time data apps, all without a single line of code.

Finding unique and interesting ways to make use of the new abundance of data will prove to be the challenge for entrepreneurs of the next 5, 10, 20 years. While the learnings are far from predictable, one certainty is that technology will be at the core of mankind's evolution for years to come. Currently, we are faced with the challenge of making processing chips less expensive, and spreading the internet (and IoT devices) as far and wide as possible.

The next step is to access the synergies from having a string of devices online together, such that we can begin automating entire systems and making mundane processes far more efficient.
