Politics / Obasanjo Advocates New System For Election Of President by gabonsky: 10:55am On Jul 15, 2017
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advocated the election of Vice President that would take over from incumbent President, rather than conducting presidential election.

Speaking at an event to mark his 80th birthday celebration by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Abuja yesterday, Obasanjo sensationally dropped Matthew from his name.

The former President stressed that the system adopted by the NSE is one where election is held into the office of deputy president, who takes over from the incumbent president upon the expiration of his term, and is also referred to as President-elect.

He added: “The system of the NSE where the deputy president is president-elect will eliminate rancour and I wish we can bring that to politics in Nigeria.”Obasanjo also used the occasion to announce that he has dropped Matthew from his name, saying: “People ask what is in a name? For me, there is so much in a name.

“When I was born, my mother and father decided to name me Matthew. I grew up being called and addressed Matthew. What is the meaning of Matthew in The Bible? He was a tax collector.

“So, when I grew up, I dropped Matthew from my name. If anyone does not want to see my eyes red, no one should call me Matthew again.”He also charged engineers to strive for perfection, as any act of imperfection of engineers often leads to monumental loss of lives, as compare to other professionals, such as doctors and lawyers.

“Doctor’s mistake often leads to the death of one patient. Lawyer’s mistake leads to the client going to jail. But if an engineer makes a mistake that leads to the collapse of a bridge or house, many people would lose their lives.

“That is why engineers must be very careful and must be efficient not to allow mistakes to be made,” he said.Obasanjo also debunked insinuations that there were five national chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during his time as President, insisting: “There were only four. That included Chief Solomon Lar, Audu Ogbe, Barnabas Gemade and Ahmadu Ali.

“I have met many Nigerians who are distinguished and I believe that if someone is found not good enough in one position, he may be useful in another. If I had not removed Gemade, he would probably not be a senator today and if Oyinlola (former governor of Osun State), who was part of the 93 military officers sacked after my assumption of office in 1999, he would probably not have been governor.

“So, where the issues concern Nigeria, I choose Nigeria above anybody and I don’t have apologies for that.”The former President urged NSE to ensure that professionalism is promoted amongst members for engineers to occupy a prime place in national development.

On his part, president of NSE, Otis Anyaeji, lauded Obasanjo for promoting Nigerian content and leading by classic example while in office.”Whilst it will be pretty difficult to bring to the fore all the achievements of this world- acclaimed achiever, I wish to mention that Obasanjo initiated the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) in 2005 and directed by policy that Nigerian engineering firms must get at least 25 per cent of each project scope. “That was how out of 120 engineering firms that participated in NIPP, 83 of them were Nigerian firms. Nigerian content by example,” the NSE boss stated.

Crime / Ogun Police Arrest Ritualists In Possession Of Human Skulls by gabonsky: 10:43am On Jul 15, 2017
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three men for being in possession of two human skulls. The suspects, according to a statement in Abeokuta yesterday, by the Command’s spokesman, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, are Saibu Popoola, Aliu Ajiroba and Jimoh Ijiola.

Oyeyemi disclosed that the suspects were arrested when policemen attached to Ayetoro Division, on routine patrol, accosted the duo of Popoola and Ajiroba on a motorcycle along Idagba Olodo road with a bag that looked suspicious.

The suspects, the Police spokesman added, confessed that the skulls were given to them by Ijiola, a resident of Erinpa area of the town, adding: “Upon the information, the DPO of Ayetoro Division, Makinde Kayode, led detectives to the residence of the third suspect, where he was also arrested.”

It was gathered that the suspects got the skulls from neighboring Benin Republic with the intention of using it for money rituals.Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that the case be transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and possible prosecution of the suspects.

Foreign Affairs / Libya: Ten Things About Gaddafi They Don’t Want You To Know by gabonsky: 10:32am On Jul 15, 2017
This article was first published by Global Research in November 2014. Today Libya as a Nation State has been destroyed by US-NATO.

What do you think of when you hear the name Colonel Gaddafi? Tyrant? Dictator? Terrorist? Well, a national citizen of Libya may disagree but we want you to decide.

For 41 years until his demise in October 2011, Muammar Gaddafi did some truly amazing things for his country and repeatedly tried to unite and empower the whole of Africa.

So despite what you’ve heard on the radio, seen in the media or on the TV, Gaddafi did some powerful things that are not characteristic of a “vicious dictator” as portrayed by the western media.

Here are ten things Gaddafi did for Libya that you may not know about…

1. In Libya a home is considered a natural human right
In Gaddafi’s Green Book it states: ”The house is a basic need of both the individual and the family, therefore it should not be owned by others”. Gaddafi’s Green Book is the formal leader’s political philosophy, it was first published in 1975 and was intended reading for all Libyans even being included in the national curriculum.

2. Education and medical treatment were all free
Under Gaddafi, Libya could boast one of the best healthcare services in the Middle East and Africa. Also if a Libyan citizen could not access the desired educational course or correct medical treatment in Libya they were funded to go abroad.

3. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation project
The largest irrigation system in the world also known as the great manmade river was designed to make water readily available to all Libyan’s across the entire country. It was funded by the Gaddafi government and it said that Gaddafi himself called it ”the eighth wonder of the world”.

4. It was free to start a farming business
If any Libyan wanted to start a farm they were given a house, farm land and live stock and seeds all free of charge.

5. A bursary was given to mothers with newborn babies
When a Libyan woman gave birth she was given 5000 (US dollars) for herself and the child.

6. Electricity was free
Electricity was free in Libya meaning absolutely no electric bills!

7. Cheap petrol
During Gaddafi’s reign the price of petrol in Libya was as low as 0.14 (US dollars) per litre.

8. Gaddafi raised the level of education
Before Gaddafi only 25% of Libyans were literate. This figure was brought up to 87% with 25% earning university degrees.

9. Libya had It’s own state bank
Libya had its own State bank, which provided loans to citizens at zero percent interest by law and they had no external debt.

10. The gold dinar
Before the fall of Tripoli and his untimely demise, Gaddafi was trying to introduce a single African currency linked to gold. Following in the foot steps of the late great pioneer Marcus Garvey who first coined the term ”United States of Africa”. Gaddafi wanted to introduce and only trade in the African gold Dinar – a move which would have thrown the world economy into chaos.

The Dinar was widely opposed by the ‘elite’ of today’s society and who could blame them. African nations would have finally had the power to bring itself out of debt and poverty and only trade in this precious commodity. They would have been able to finally say ‘no’ to external exploitation and charge whatever they felt suitable for precious resources. It has been said that the gold Dinar was the real reason for the NATO led rebellion, in a bid to oust the outspoken leader

Family / Having Sex Once Weekly Slows Ageing In Women, Researchers Find by gabonsky: 9:05am On Jul 14, 2017
The study was conducted over one week. Results revealed that women who had sex at least once during the study’s one-week duration had significantly longer telomeres.

Having sex at least once a week slows ageing in women – even if they do not enjoy being intimate, new research reveals. Being active between the sheets increases the length of women’s telomeres, a study found.

These ‘cap’ the end of Deoxy Nucleic Acid (DNA)/genetic material strands, with longer lengths being associated with slower ageing, longer lifespans and improved overall health.

Women’s telomeres lengthen with regular love making regardless of whether they are sexually satisfied in their relationship, the research adds. Researchers believe sex may aid ageing in women by dampening stress and boosting their immune system.

Regular sex really is the best medicine for preventing life-threatening heart disease – if you are a man, scientists found last month. Researchers from the University of California in San Francisco analyzed physical intimacy, as well as partner support or conflict, overall relationship satisfaction and stress in 129 mothers in long-term relationships.

Blood samples were taken from the study’s participants to determine their telomere length. The study was conducted over one week. Results revealed that women who had sex at least once during the study’s one-week duration had significantly longer telomeres.

Relationship satisfaction, stress and partner support or conflict had no impact on telomere length. The findings were published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Science/Technology / LG Brings Twinwash Machine Into Market by gabonsky: 11:33am On Jul 13, 2017
LG Electronics has introduced into the Nigerian market, the world first TwinWash washing machine, giving users the opportunity of washing with two loads at same time.

With the new technology, separating delicate from everyday clothes and having them washed at different times is now a thing of the past, as the washing machine with two washers let users save time and energy by cleaning double the amount of clothes simultaneously.

Speaking at the event, General Manager, Home Appliances, LG West Africa Operations, .Jiung Park, explained that the latest technology is all about efficiency and innovation, as it redefines the concept of laundry and help get clothes cleaner in lesser time.

He said, “At LG Electronics, we are committed to making life better for consumers around the world by providing thoughtfully designed products that offer powerful performance with uncompromised reliability. Our industry’s TWINWASH is an epitome of the superiority of technology that we offer and we are optimistic that our consumers will enjoy a whole new level of washing with the World’s First LG TwinWash.”

The new washing machine features LG’s unique TurboWash 2.0 technology that uses twin nozzles positioned inside the drum of the main washer to spray a concentrated solution of detergent directly onto the clothes, thus improving the unit’s cleaning performance.

The high-pressure nozzle sprays tiny water particles through the clothes during high spin cycles for more effective rinsing. For example, muddy gym wear can be separated from whites, or silk underwear washed at the same time as towels on a hot wash.

According to Park, the new washing machine, which is powered by mini washer, has a stylish and economic design coupled with time saving. The system is Wi-Fi and NFC enabled and is fitted with LG’s SmartThinQ technology. This means users can program and control cycles including the temperature and length using an app, while they are out of the house.“The washing machine’s energy monitoring feature provides helpful data, while LG’s Proprietary Home Chat service allows users to check the status of their washing machine using everyday natural language. The revolutionary Inverter Direct Drive motor at the heart of the machine is fitted in the space of a typical front load washing machine, hence nothing is sacrificed for the added convenience,” Park explained

Japan is a beautiful country. The green mountains, blue sea, vibrant culture and its mouth-watering cuisine, everything adds to its beauty.

It’s the cuisine and lifestyle of Japanese people that keep them healthy and young looking. For example, Japanese food is based upon the principle of health and longevity. In fact, Japan is home to the world’s highest proportion of people who live more than 100 years.

In Japan, food is not solely eaten for taste. Japanese people believe in extracting health benefits from their food.

In fact, Japan is home to …

1. Drinking Green Tea
Japanese people love to drink green tea. The matcha (powdered green tea) is made from the highest quality leaves, which are dried and milled into a fine powder. This powder is then mixed with hot water. This form of green tea is used in the tea ceremony, which is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha.

Drinking green tea also reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer.

According to a 2006 study published in JAMA, adults in Japan who consumed higher amounts of green tea had a lower risk of death due to all causes and due to cardiovascular disease. The study also says that Japanese citizens who drank 5 cups of green tea per day had 26 percent lower mortality rates.

2. Consuming Fermented Foods
Japanese people often eat fermented foods like kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh and kimchi.

Fermented foods are those that have been through a process of lacto fermentation. In this process, natural bacteria feed on the sugar and starch in the food and create lactic acid. Fermentation preserves the natural nutrients in food and creates beneficial enzymes, B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and various strains of probiotics.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology reports there is a connection between fermented dairy products and the growth of beneficial intestinal microbes.

The study also noted the importance of findings that non-dairy fermented foods and herbs can have a positive influence on intestinal microbiota, as there may be an influence on longer-term gut-brain communication.

3. Popularity of Seafood
Unlike Americans, Japanese people like to eat seafood rather than red meat, which is associated with many health problems, such as obesity, high cholesterol and inflammatory diseases.

Rice or noodles accompanied by different types of seafood are common meals in Japan. As Japan is surrounded by sea, fish and shellfish like tuna, salmon, mackerel and shrimp are extremely popular in Japanese cuisine.

Fish is good for you due to its high-quality proteins, various essential nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids, which are excellent for the brain, heart and organs.

Omega-3 fatty acids also promote smooth skin. These healthy fats help prevent many skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, non-melanoma skin cancer and melanoma.

The Japanese also believe that the healthier the fish you eat, the better it is for you. This is why they serve fish in many different ways, such as raw, poached, grilled, fried, baked or steamed.
4. Eating Smaller Portions
Serving small portions is part of Japan’s culture.

Smaller portion sizes can make you eat less, thereby helping you lose weight. Portions also look larger on smaller plates, which contribute to less eating. This in turn prevents unintentional overeating and high calorie intake.

Some of the basic foundations of Japanese home-cooked food presentation include:

Do not completely fill up the plates.

Do not serve a big portion of any item.

Fresh is best.

Foods should be garnished and each item on the menu should be arranged properly to showcase its natural beauty.

5. Walking is a Ritual
In Japan, both men and women walk a lot. Walking is a good form of exercise to remain slim and fit.
Walking not only helps with weight loss, it also improves cardiovascular health, boosts energy and mood, and helps relieve stress.

Even children walk a good part of the way to school, instead of being dropped off by their parents.
Apart from walking, use of bicycles is also popular. Many people ride bicycles everywhere, which is another good form of exercise.

6. Eating on the Go is a Big No-No
Meal times in Japan are sacred periods of energizing your body hence there are no walking lunches. It is considered impolite although acceptable in Japan to eat while you are on the go. Which is why, you will rarely see anyone eat on the street or while riding a public transport.

In Japan, you do not do anything else while eating. No TV, no work. Cleanliness and presentation of food, too, form an essential part of Japanese food eating.

Slower eating means your stomach has time to tell you ‘enough’, compared to the speedy binge eating of Americans where it’s already too late by the time your stomach signals your brain that it is full, resulting in overeating.

Politics / 3000 Policemen Deployed To Former Boko Haram Strongholds by gabonsky: 4:19pm On Jul 09, 2017
The Borno Police Command on Sunday said it had deployed 3, 000 policemen to Maiduguri and other areas liberated from the Boko Haram insurgents.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State, ASP Victor Isuzu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

Isuzu said that the measure became imperative to enhance security network in Maiduguri and other communities liberated from the insurgents.

He explained that the command had taken proactive steps to deal with security threats, protect lives and property in the state.

He said that the personnel had already resumed duty in their various posts.

Commenting on the foiled suicide bomb attack by the insurgents at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), the PPRO said the command had deployed additional personnel to strengthen security at the institution.

“The command had recently deployed a full unit of mobile police personnel, guards and sniffer dogs to the university, to complement the presence of security personnel there.

“These deployments have started yielding results toward preventing attempts by these enemies of peace to threaten the lives and safety of the university community and its environs.”

Isuzu reiterated the commitment of the command to the protection of lives and property in the state.
He called on the people to be vigilant and cooperate with the law enforcement agents to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

Family / Ejaculating Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk by gabonsky: 3:02pm On Jul 07, 2017
A new research by Harvard University, United States (U.S.), has found confirmed this compared to those who release just four-to-seven times every four weeks. The researchers say the findings are true regardless of whether men achieve orgasm through masturbation or sex.Researchers did not speculate on why ejaculation protects against prostate cancer, however, past research suggests it helps to rid the gland of cancer-causing substances and infections.

Ejaculation may also help to ease inflammation, which is a known cause of cancer. Researchers from Harvard University analyzed 31,925 healthy men who completed a questionnaire about their ejaculation frequency back in 1992. Monthly ejaculation frequency was assessed in men aged 20-to-29, 40-to-49 and the year before the questionnaire was completed.

Ejaculation was defined broadly and could be as a result of sex or masturbation. The men were then followed until 2010. Some 3,839 of the study’s participants were diagnosed with prostate cancer during the investigation.

Results revealed that ejaculating at least 21 times a month significantly reduces the risk of prostate cancer in men aged 20-to-29 and 40-to-49. This is compared to ejaculating just four-to-seven times a month.

The researchers wrote: “We found that men reporting higher compared to lower ejaculatory frequency in adulthood were less likely to be subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer.” The findings were published in the journal European Urology.

Meanwhile, new research claims chemotherapy could cause cancer to spread and become more deadly. The treatment is often regarded as the first option for breast cancer patients to shrink tumors and even blitz the disease altogether.

However, scientists at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine have found evidence that this is only a short-term solution.Their research suggests that, while shrinking the tumours, chemotherapy simultaneously opens a gateway for tumors to spread into the blood system, making it easier to grow back stronger.

Cancer becomes incredibly difficult to treat – often fatal – once it spreads to other organs; it is then classified as Stage 4.Lead author Dr. George Karagiannis says the findings, published on Wednesday, should not deter patients from seeking treatment, but suggests we could create a way to better monitor tumor movement in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Also, vaccines tailored to match a person’s particular constellation of cancer mutations seem to have fended off tumours in a handful of patients, two small clinical trials show. The vaccines are described in papers published in Nature on July 5. The studies are the first to report that the approach — which is gaining support in academia and industry — could combat cancer in humans. They also provide hints about ways to boost the vaccines’ power by combining them with treatments that target the immune system, called immunotherapies.

“It is potentially a game changer,” says Cornelis Melief, a cancer immunologist at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, and author of a commentary accompanying the papers. “The two papers really strongly indicate that the patients experienced clinical benefit.”In principle, the vaccines are similar to those used against infectious diseases: unique components of a foreign invader — cancer cells, in this case — are mixed with agents that stimulate an immune response. The mixture is injected into the patient, in the hope of triggering an immune attack strong enough to vanquish the invader.

But for personalized cancer vaccines, the components are tailored to each patient and are administered after the cancer has already appeared — rather than aiming to prevent occurrence. In the studies, researchers began by sequencing the genes that encode proteins in each patient’s tumour. They selected mutant proteins that were most likely to generate an immune response and used these as the basis for their vaccines.

One group, led by Catherine Wu at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, treated six people with melanoma, a type of skin cancer. For each person, they formulated a vaccine that contained up to 20 protein fragments corresponding to the mutations in their tumours1. The participants, who received surgery to remove their tumours, had been deemed at high risk for cancer recurrence. But they were not due to receive further treatment unless their cancer came back. Recurrence typically occurs in about half of all such melanoma patients, says Wu.

Two years later, four of those patients had not seen their tumours return. And although tumours did grow in the remaining two participants, both experienced a complete remission when subsequently treated with a drug that rouses the immune system by blocking a protein called PD-1.

The second group, led by Ugur Sahin, a physician who studies tumour immunology and cancer genomics at the University of Mainz in Germany, treated 13 melanoma patients with vaccines that contained RNA encoding up to 10 mutated proteins in each patient2. The eight patients who had no visible tumours at the time of vaccination remained tumour-free more than a year later.

The remaining five participants’ tumours had spread by the time they received the vaccine. Tumours shrank in two of them, but later resurged in one patient. A third experienced a complete remission after subsequent treatment with a PD-1 inhibitor.

Personalized cancer vaccines had already been shown to provoke immune responses in humans. But the new trials are the first to evaluate whether these immune responses can successfully battle tumours. The numbers are small and the trials lacked a control group, but the results are encouraging, says Robert Schreiber, a cancer immunologist at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. Larger trials in academia and industry are ongoing, he notes, and researchers are particularly interested in combining the vaccines with PD-1 inhibitors. “I’m convinced that personalized vaccines are a way to go,” he says.

Science/Technology / Edusat-1 Satellite Goes Into Orbit Today by gabonsky: 2:53pm On Jul 07, 2017
The federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has said that five satellites of the BIRDS-1 Project, including the Nigerian CubeSat, code-named Nigeria Edusat-1, would be released from the International Space Station 1SS KIBO (Japan Cubicle) into the orbit today.

The live event can be viewed via YouTube through
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP5YZi5usHc.

The Nigerian CubeSat is designed, built and owned by FUTA in collaboration with National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja and Kyushu Institute of Technology Japan.

A statement made available to journalists in Akure yesterday by the Head of Information Unit of the institution, Mr. Adebanjo Adegbenro, stated that the project had reached the final stage.

Adegbenro said that with the deployment, the satellites would go round the earth taking images and other critical data, which could be viewed and analysed at the ground stations one of which would be based at the FUTA.

Besides, Mr. Ibukun Adebolu from FUTA’s Department of Mechanical Engineering who is the representative of Nigeria on the project, stated: “NigeriaEduSat-1, along with the four other nanosatellites of the BIRDS constellation will perform three onboard missions.

“First, we aim to take low and high resolution pictures of each home country of the participating members of the constellation. Each satellite is equipped with a 0.3 megapixel camera as well as a 5 megapixel camera.

“We hope to capture distinct features of each target country, including borderline images, major rivers etc. The second mission on board each satellite is aimed at space education and outreach. Popular songs and poems are converted into digital format and uplinked to the satellite.”

“The satellite stores the uplink file, re-assembles it through an onboard digi-singer synthesiser and retransmits the file as an audio file that can be received on ground by amateur radio operators.”

Adebolu noted that the “mission is aimed at promoting interest in satellite technology and space careers among children and youths, who can participate by coding the songs to be re-transmitted during major outreach events.

“The third onboard mission has a scientific nature. It involves the measurement of atmospheric density in the region 400 kilometres above earth,” he said.Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Fuwape, said with the steady progress being made on the project, the university had acquitted itself creditably as the country’s leading university of technology. He said FUTA would ensure that the country reaps maximally from the project and will lead the dissemination of scientific knowledge in that field of satellite technology.

You have probably heard blogging described as "part art, part science" ... and we definitely believe that is true! Because of this, there really is no "right way" or "wrong way" when it comes to blogging; however, there are some "top tips" that we have picked up along the way that we thought might be helpful for those of you just getting started.

1) Build an Email List
From Day 1, you are going to want to begin capturing email addresses of the people that are reading your blog. Offer them something of value, such as a free downloadable checklist, in order to entice them to sign up. Remember, even if you don't plan on selling anything, having your own email list allows you to communicate directly with your readers in a way that social media cannot.

2) Blog for the Audience You Want
It can be difficult to stay motivated when you have very little (or even no) traffic; however, you need to blog for the audience you want to have in the future. Realize that your stats may be fairly flat for months or even years ... and it will take a consistent effort over time before they start to grow.

3) Don't Hold Back ... Be the Expert
Don't be afraid to give away your best tips, your best advice, your knowledge. Be the expert and you will soon find that others are recommending you as the authority in your niche.

4) Be Proud of Your Work
Rather than just pump out dozens or even hundreds of quick articles that offer little value to the reader, take pride in your work. Make sure that ALL of your posts are well-written and worthy of your audience's attention.

5) Keep it Consistent
There are studies that show that those who blog consistently gain more subscribers than those who do not. It is the same with posting on social media ... consistency is the key. Pick a blog publishing schedule that you can stick with on a regular basis, even if it is just one post per week. Publish it on the same day and time each week and email your list to let them know that you have published a new post. Make it a process ... and do it consistently.

Crime / Boko Haram In Niger Kidnap 37 Women, Nine People Killed by gabonsky: 5:56am On Jul 05, 2017
Boko Haram jihadists have kidnapped 37 women and slit the throats of nine other people at a village in southeastern Niger, the regional governor said Tuesday.

The attack happened on Sunday at the village of Ngalewa, near the border with Nigeria, the governor of Diffa region, Laouali Mahamane Dan Dano, told state TV.

“Boko Haram elements… slit the throats of nine people… they took women, 37 women, and departed with them,” he said.

“The defence and security forces are already in pursuit, and we hope that in the coming days these women will be found and freed,” he said.

The governor, who went to Ngalewa on Monday, said the village had been singled out because it was known for its resistance to the jihadists.

The assailants came by foot for greater stealth, he said.

The village’s mayor, Abari El Hadj Daouda, told AFP by phone that the attack happened on Sunday evening, “between 10 and 11pm.”

“About 30 or 40 women and children were kidnapped… (and) nine people killed,” he said.
The village lies a few kilometers (miles) north of the town of Kabalewa, where there was a suicide attack last Wednesday.

Diffa, which as a population of around 600,000 people, has suffered a string of attacks by the Nigeria-based Boko Haram since 2015.

Around 300,000 people displaced by jihadist attacks have taken refuge in the region, which already grapples with grinding poverty.

In April 2014, Islamist militants seized 276 schoolgirls from the remote northeast Nigerian town of Chibok, triggering global condemnation and drawing attention to the bloody Boko Haram insurgency.

Fifty-seven escaped in the immediate aftermath. Of the 219 who did not manage to flee, 106 have either been released or found, leaving 113 still missing.

The attack on Sunday coincided with a visit to Niger’s western neighbour Mali by French President Emmanuel Macron, aimed at boosting multinational efforts to fight jihadism in countries south of the Sahara.

The so-called G5 Sahel nations — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger — plan to set up a regional force.

Politics / South Africa Police Asked To Probe Zuma Allies’ Wedding by gabonsky: 5:12pm On Jul 03, 2017
South African President Jacob Zuma gestures as he delivers a speech during the ANC’s Fifth Annual Policy Conference in Johannesburg on June 30, 2017.

A South African opposition party on Monday asked police to investigate allegations that taxpayers’ money paid for the lavish wedding of a family with close ties to President Jacob Zuma.

Citing leaked emails, local media alleged last week that $3.3-million meant to help poor farmers was instead moved through companies owned by the Guptas and used to settle bills for the 2013 wedding.

The four-day event marked the marriage of a niece of one of the Gupta brothers. The wealthy Indian business family is at the centre of a slew of graft scandals surrounding Zuma.

The brothers, who have taken South African citizenship, are accused of wielding undue influence over the president and being unfairly awarded lucrative government contracts.

The Democratic Alliance party has asked police to probe the wedding costs.

“The fact that public funds, meant to assist the poor, were allegedly used to pay for President Jacob Zuma’s number one clients, the Guptas’, family wedding is grotesque,” said DA lawmaker David Maynier.

It “must be investigated without fear or favour,” he added.

There was no immediate confirmation from police that the matter would be investigated.

The wedding, attended by several government ministers, was held at Sun City, a luxury casino resort 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

The Guptas’ influence over the government was highlighted when a large private jet carrying foreign guests to the event was allowed to land at Waterkloof Air Force base, outside Pretoria.

The airport is a military facility normally used to receive heads of state.

Guests did not go through normal immigration checks, and were given a police escort to the wedding venue.

President Zuma and the Guptas have previously denied wrongdoing.

In a statement, Army Spokesman, Brig. Gen. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said based on information, the troops had last Wednesday ambushed the Boko Haram terrorists along Gamboru-Mussini-Logomani who came to loot and burn a broken down truck loaded with assorted goods at Mussini village.

Troops of 3 Battalion, 22 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have killed five Boko Haram terrorists, just as their colleagues from 151 Battalion on a routine fighting patrol within Lt. Col Abu Ali Range discovered freshly dug hole ready for Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by suspected elements of Boko Haram terrorists.

He said items recovered from them include, 1 AK-47 rifle with registration number 565203290, 1 AK-47 magazine, 3 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, 27 bicycles, 10 machetes and 1 dagger.

“The unit’s Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) team scanned the general area and discovered 1 cylinder main charge, 1 pressure plate and 3 battery suspected to have been abandoned by the terrorists and the prepared IED was safely detonated by the team,” the statement added.

Usman further disclosed that troops of 82 Task Force Battalion on patrol along Ngoshe-Pulka, also discovered 3 IEDs buried by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on the road, adding that the unit’s EOD team safely detonated the IEDs in-situ.

Further more, troops of 28 Task Force Brigade of the Nigerian Army visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Chibok, Borno State, where they provided free medical services to the community, as part of their contribution to the host community and activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).

Car Talk / Maserati Genesi Concept Is A Stellar Dream Supercar by gabonsky: 11:21am On Jul 02, 2017
Despite its attractive design and intriguing positioning within the sports car market, the Maserati Alfieri isn't any closer to production than it was when unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014.

Given the uncertainty that still exists around the Italian sports car, Behance artist Sergey Dvornytskyy has rendered his ideal future Maserati, dubbed the Genesi Concept.

The car takes obvious design inspiration from the Alfieri and has similar proportions, but features an altogether more futuristic design and has been designed to cater for the impending future of autonomous vehicles. Dvornytskyy has designed the Genesi to provide a fully autonomous driving mode, while also allowing the occupant to drive the car thanks to a steering wheel which extends out of the dashboard.

Another interesting feature of the Genesi is that, while in autonomous mode, the driver can select VR mode and all of the windows will transform into a virtual reality cockpit, allowing the driver to experience their favorite race track while the car is actually driving itself.

Career / The Real Reason Why Employees Aren't Opening Your Emails by gabonsky: 1:01pm On Jul 01, 2017
I constantly have conversations with communicators who are eager to find the hot new technology--internal social platforms, apps, even artificial intelligence--to replace boring, clunky old email for communicating with employees.

But the reality is that, for the foreseeable future, email is here to stay as a foundation of internal communication. Email is simply too universal, too easy to use and too convenient to recklessly abandon.

But just because email is the devil we know doesn't mean that we have to be sloppy about how we use it. And there's one element of email that most communicators are doing poorly--which leads employees to ignore or delete even the most important organizational messages.

That element? Subject lines. External marketers know that 47% of recipients decide whether to open an email based solely on the subject line. So when you create subject lines that are meaningless or irrelevant, you've missed the opportunity to capture employees' attention.

That's why you need to make sure your subject lines accomplish at least one of these 5 objectives:

Pique curiosity. The old way of thinking about subject lines is that they need to summarize the email itself. But marketers know that, since people have itchy trigger fingers (poised over the delete button), they need an incentive to open the message. That's why some of the best subject lines are intriguing. Examples: "Build this essential skill to accomplish your goals" and "Don't open this mail . . . unless you want to learn award-winners' secrets."

Make an offer. We're all familiar with retailers who try to entice us with special sales. But everyone likes a deal, which is why offers work internally as well. Examples: "Download this valuable checklist for project management" and "Getting promoted can be just this simple."

Meet employees' needs. Appealing to self-interest is always a winning strategy. That's why subject lines that are not about us (the organization) but are about you (the individual) cut through the clutter. Examples: "Stop wasting your time on non-productive tasks" and "5 benefits that can save you money."

Avoid turn-offs. Marketers have studied practices that prevent people from opening emails. For instance, words like "newsletter," "meeting" and "training" all negatively affect open rates. Other turn-offs? Adopting a corporate tone or using bureaucratic language. Be friendly and conversational.

Create a sense of urgency. If an email doesn't seem timely, it quickly falls to the bottom of the inbox--and then is lost forever. That's why using words like "limited," "urgent" and "special" encourage employees to act fast. Examples of better-pay-attention-now subject lines: "After today, this offer expires (really!)" and "Uh-oh, the deadline is fast approaching."

Writing great subject lines isn't easy, but it easy to find how-to resources about external email you can adapt for your internal messages. So brush up your knowledge to make every email count.

Family / Menstrual Disturbances, Causes, Symptoms And Treatment! by gabonsky: 12:40pm On Jul 01, 2017
What is Menstruation?
To understand menstruation & menstrual disorders you need to be familiar with the anatomy of the female reproductive system. The uterus is a small organ situated at the lower end of the female body between the bladder and large intestine. It mainly consists of 2 parts – the body and the cervix.

Normally the body of the uterus is in collapsed condition where the walls of the uterus fold in and is of fist size. In case of pregnancy the walls expand to include the fetus. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus and opens up into the vagina. When the female is menstruating, blood oozes out into the vagina from the uterus. On either side of the main body are the fallopian tubes which have the ovaries. The ovaries produce the egg. When the egg is successfully fertilized it becomes an embryo and forms the fetus. The fetus is attached to the uterus lining and is fed from the wall of the uterus which is thickened with blood vessels for nourishment of the fetus. The lining of the uterus is called endometrium.

If there is no successful fertilization of the egg the endometrium is discarded as menstrual blood through the vagina. A menstrual cycle is typically 28 days. It could vary between 21 to 35 days and is still considered to be normal. This depends upon the health and age of the individual. As the female ages there are lengthier menstrual cycles. Each menstrual period lasts for around 5 to 6 days. But in some healthy females it could last for 4 or slightly above 6 days. Menstruation begins in a female when she is typically 12 to 13 years of age. In some human races it could be earlier.

Menstrual Disorders

Menstruation Is Under The Control Of?
The whole process of menstruation is controlled by 6 hormones. These hormones are in turn controlled by the pituitary and hypothalamus gland in the brain. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone is generated by the hypothalamus. This in turn causes the pituitary gland to secrete follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH) At the order of FSH and LH the ovaries secrete estrogen, progesterone and the male hormones. These hormones play an important role during the menstruation cycle.

Menstrual Disorders
Menstrual disorders are seen if the cycle is less than 21 days or more than 3 months. Also if the period of menstruation is more than 10 days it becomes worrisome.

Some of the common menstrual disorders and their symptoms and line of treatments is given below.

1. Painful Periods
During menstruation, women could experience lower abdomen pain and discomfort. The cramps could spread to the lower back and the thighs. The contraction in the uterus is the cause for the cramps. The pain typically starts when the women starts bleeding. It could last for 1 to 2 days. It is typically seen along with heavy bleeding.

Treatment Options –

You could apply a heated pad on the abdomen.
Some medicines like anti-inflammatory also help in controlling the cramps.
Consumption of birth control pills or contraceptives is found to contain the disorder.
Drinking chamomile tea early in the morning during your menstrual period is found to help in reduction of cramps and discomfort.

2. Periods With Heavy Bleeding
Some women could experience heavy bleeding during menstruation days. Normally a woman loses 30 ml of blood during a menstruation cycle. The woman typically uses 3 to 6 pads per day. If she finds that the pad or tampons need to be changed every hour since it is heavily soaked it is a sign of excessive bleeding.

The cause for heavy bleeding could be-

Reaching of puberty
Infections in the vagina
Lowered function of the Thyroid gland
Inflammation of the cervix region
Major changes in the diet or exercise
Tumors in the uterus

Treatment Options Include-

Eating gooseberries which contains a lot of vitamin C helps in containing heavy bleeding.
Consumption of banana flowers also helps in controlling of excessive menstrual blood flow
Eating foods high on manganese
Insertion of an intrauterine device which releases hormones
Consumption of medicines which contain progestin or tranexamic
Cutting the blood supply to the uterus by surgical methods
Surgical removal of uterine fibroids

3. Missing Or Absent Periods
If a female does not get her first period by the age of 16 it is declared to be primary amenorrhea.

Secondary amenorrhea is when you miss your periods for nearly 6 months after getting it regularly.

This could be because of malfunction of the pituitary gland or the female reproductive system.

The causes for missing or delayed periods in younger girls could be due to –

Being anorexic
Thyroid glands being overactive
Cysts in the ovaries
Losing or gaining sudden weight
Stopping of contraceptive pills
Being pregnant

The case of adult females the causes could be

Aging and leading into menopause
Inflammatory disease of the pelvic region
Breastfeeding your baby
Being pregnant

When you are pregnant you will not have any menstruation cycles. To confirm if you are pregnant you need to do the pregnancy test. This test has to be done after a few days past your menstruation cycle date.

As Part Of Treatment Methods, You Have –

Consumption of oral contraceptives
Home remedies include consuming ground radish seeds and the herb parsley. Parsley could be added to carrot juice and taken on a daily basis.
Eating the right foods with all the required nutrition also plays an important role in maintaining normal cycles for menstruation.
Consumption of cyclic progestin also aids in delayed periods.

4. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
These symptoms are generally seen a week before the actual periods. They are physical, emotional and behavioral traits and can be seen all through the reproductive years.

The symptoms of PMS include –

Being irritable
Experiencing backache
Experiencing stomach bloating
Outburst of Acne
Having headaches
Signs of depression and anger
Mild cramps in the stomach
Having constipation
Having Diarrhea
Experiencing soreness of breasts
Feeling tired
Feeling anxious and stressed out

The major cause of PMS is attributed to hormonal imbalances. Estrogen levels are found to vary during a menstruation cycle which causes mood swings and other menstrual symptoms. These symptoms are found to disappear within 4 days of onset of periods.

Treatment Options For PMS Include –

Exercise – Doing light exercises is found to improve mood swings and bring in a good feeling. This reduces depression and anxiety.
Eating many small meals throughout the day is found to balance blood sugar levels and control PMS symptoms.
Calcium supplements taken during menstruation cycle also aids in feeling less fatigued and depressed.
Avoiding alcohol, sweets and caffeine during the time of periods reduces symptoms of irritability and anxiety.
To manage stress you could adopt relaxation techniques like meditation and breathing exercises.
If the PMS symptoms are severe you could consult a doctor who might treat you with antidepressants.

5. Menstruation Disorders Due To Anatomical Problems
There could be cases of heaving bleeding due to issues related to the reproductive system. Some of the causes include

Uterine fibroids – These are benign tumors that are seen on the uterus muscle wall.
Polyps – These are found to be generated by the lining of the uterus
Adenomyosis – This happens when the lining of the uterus is found in the muscle of the uterus.
Reduced strength of uterus contractions
Uterus with large surface area
Polycystic ovary syndrome
Uterus cancer

Treatment in the above cases includes visit to the gynecologist and taking their advice. In some cases if the fibroids cannot be removed surgically, the whole uterus or parts of the uterus are removed.

Diagnosis Of Menstrual Disorders
The best person who can detect any menstrual disorders is the doctor. Thus if you are experiencing any abnormal symptoms with respect to menstruation you could consult your doctor. The doctor would quiz you with questions regarding you menstruation cycles, blood flow details etc. Thus you need to go prepared with all the notes.

The doctor could also do a physical check of the pelvic region. The doctor can feel the reproductive organs and find out if they are inflamed. If there are doubts the doctor could schedule a pap smear test too. This is to rule out any cancers. Blood tests can also be scheduled to find out about hormonal imbalances. In case of pregnancy the same can be confirmed by blood or urine test.

General Guidelines For Treatment
1. Dietary Factors
Eating a healthy diet 2 weeks before the periods time will go a long way in resolving symptoms like cramps during the periods. This includes whole grains, lots of vegetables and fruits. Junk foods and saturated fats should be avoided during this time.

For women who bleed extensively, consumption of the diet rich in iron is advisable. Food products rich in heme iron are ideal for maintaining good iron levels in the body and compensating for loss of blood during menstruation. Such foods include fish, meat, poultry, clams and oysters. Vegetables are the non heme iron products. Consuming of vitamin C helps in absorption of non heme iron in the body. If not through food, iron can also be taken as supplements. Consumption of herbs and supplements also changes the chemistry in the body and relieves uncomfortable symptoms in the body.

2. Lifestyle Measures
Light exercise is advisable for relieving pain during menstruation. Application of a heated pad on the abdomen or soaking in warm water helps relieve cramps. Maintain vagina hygiene and change pads or tampons regularly. Doing yoga and meditation on a regular basis helps to keep your mind calm and relaxed.

3. Medicines
Consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is found to alleviate some of the menstrual disorder symptoms.

Conclusion
Some of the symptoms like PMS are bearable during the menstruation period. But there could be severe ones which would need the attention of a doctor. Thus you can decide based on the intensity of symptoms on whether to need to consult a certified doctor or not.

Programming / Re: How To Protect Yourself From Petya/goldeneye Ransomware by gabonsky: 11:44am On Jul 01, 2017
please protect your computer from these deadliest computer virus petya/goldeneye ransomware
Programming / How To Protect Yourself From Petya/goldeneye Ransomware by gabonsky: 10:06pm On Jun 30, 2017
Recently, a new strain of ransomware attack broke out. Many organizations in Europe and the US have been crippled by the new ransomware called Petya/GoldenEye. It spreads rapidly across the world and is expanding the infection. Here’s what you need to know about Petya/GoldenEye and how to prevent the attack:

What Is Petya/GoldenEye?
Similar to WannaCry, Petya uses the Eternal Blue exploit to infect Windows devices, especially older Windows systems. Not like WannaCry which encrypts the files one by one, Petya is much more dangerous that can damage the whole hard drive, even stop you entering your system.

How Does Petya Attack Work?
While Petya is trying to infect a computer, Blue Screen of Death can be a signal, then the system will reboot by force to finish the encryption. This can be ignored easily as the process looks like Windows scanning and repairing the system itself. Once the reboot finished, the computer is encrypted and a note will pop up to alert the user to pay the ransom.

How to Prevent Petya/GoldenEye Attacks?
Ransomware attack can be a real disaster as it threatens your important files and money. So you need to keep alert to any suspicious action on your computer. Once you get this popup below, you should shut down your PC immediately in case of infecting Petya.

Here you are the tips to prevent Petya/GoldenEye:

1. Fix System Vulnerability
System vulnerability is always the target of ransomware. It’s crucial to keep your system up-to-date. Or you can go to Microsoft Official Site to download the latest patches for your older version Windows.

2. Disable WMI service
WMI runs automatically at system startup under the LocalSystem account. The service can be used by Petya to spread the ransomware.

Follow the steps to stop WMI service
Note: If WMI service is not running, you cannot manage, monitor, or retrieve information about the resources on the computer, especially remotely. Besides, you probably can't use Action Center on Windows 10 and Windows 8 without WMI service.

3. Create a Stronger Password for Your System
A strong password can help you improve the security of your system by preventing malicious programs from accessing your system easily. For example, you can mix the password with capitalized letters, symbols and numbers.

4. Close the service of SMBv1
SMBv1 is a very old deprecated network protocol and might be attacked by Petya ransomware. You can probably disable it to prevent the attack. But there's a potential impact that file and print sharing won't work anymore on a local area network.

Follow the steps to stop SMBv1
Don't want to disable SMBv1? Here are the tips for you:
Only use protected networks and do NOT share important files over SMBv1 connections
Block inbound/outbound SMB traffic at your border firewalls
Restrict SMB to only localhost (your own computers) via local host firewalls.

5. Install PC Protection Program on Your Computer
The most effortless but effective way to block ransomware is making good use of a system security tool which offers anti-ransomware engine and real-time protection. IObit Malware Fighter 5 is one good choice for you to detect ransomware threats in real-time and protect the computer against Petya attack.

6. Secure Hard Disk MBR
Hard Disk MBR can be easily tampered and encrypted by ransomware like Petya/GoldenEye. Most of Windows devices infected Petya/GoldenEye because of its vulnerability. IObit MBR Guard is a simple filler for disk, it can protect MBR from malicious tampering and encrypting.

7. Backup Your Important Files
To avoid losing your important files, especially encrypted by Ransomware, it’s better for you to develop the good habit to make a back-up regularly and properly.
