My Names



‘The Sow’ was my official nickname in my Cedarn Montessori Junior School, you see my full name is Temitayo Stacie Ola-Williams, from that we get my initials; T.S. Ola-Williams, look closely and you would see something. ‘T S O W’ which was, to does who revelled in teasing me, a clincher.
I was called that conveniently. My ‘fatness’ as someone crudely put it, was unbecoming; they just couldn’t understand how a lump like me could have come from my mum. Mrs Taiye Alexandra Ola-Williams, my dearest mother was slim and in shape but our facial resemblance was obvious even though I was darker in complexion; I had her light brown eyes too.

After receiving a lot of jabs from people, kids and adults alike and feeling like a stranger in my own skin, I got thinking. Aren’t I a child?, at nine years at least I’m allowed to be ‘fat’, ‘round’ what ever you could call it. In my mind, I resolved that I won’t let anyone’s petty comment disturb me, pretty advanced for a kid you think, but it was just simple reasoning I was standing on. One, I felt I was just ‘chubby’ with baby fat that would be shed as I grow older, Two, I wasn’t even the fattest kid in my form not even near the top three, The award of ‘Fattest’ went to Aisha Umar, who most people were afraid of, no one dared call her fat, I was the only one allowed to be picked on. When I walk from the cafeteria to my class, I hear groups of girls giggling and jeering ‘there goes Mummy Sow’, and rather loudly too.

I entered Cedarn in primary three when I first came to Nigeria I had never seen so many black kids like me and I was happy to sit back and enjoy the feel that was how I became a watcher. My parents who were both mixed; Nigerian, Brazilian and Irish had been living in England before they decided they wanted to settle down in Nigeria, I can't really remember any jab or tease back there. It was when I got to Nigeria that I got to know the person they called ‘The Sow’
