Sagamite:

Option out of what menu list?

Be expansive, a lot of people are not understanding you.

Give a high-level view of your innovative new framework.

Spare me.

Ah I only got D in English oh.

People should be taught as genuinely as possible in the ways they understand.
If English has to be one of the subjects, all well and good. People should be nurtured to succeed at whatever they do
but, Depth or Quality of Education shouldn't be hung on English.

Kobojunkie:

So because A HANDFUL of people who you claim to be making waves and changing lives can hardly speak English, English should be done away with or made an option?  shocked shocked

This conversation we are having here would probably not have been possible if we did not have a common language, in this case English, to converse in. Why is the COMMON Language even a problem? What is the other option?

Oh because a HANDFUL of us can communicate in English here, what happens to those that are stuck at Pidgin?
they should be seen as 'Uneducated' 'Useless' perhaps because they can't.
Politics / Re: Mass Failure In Neco Exams Again by Gamine(f): 5:49pm On Sep 22, 2010
Kobojunkie:

No what? You came up with the ROOT OF PROBLEM argument and I am wondering why English is being put on the cutting table.

My argument has always been that the present system should be done away with (Root of the Problem! ha) cheesy

My take on English and Grammar only came up when that became the subject of discussion.
and I wondered if that could be used as a true measurement of 'Education'
There are too many people changing lives and making waves who can hardly speak English
Hence! my alarm.

tensor777:

Honsestly what are you rambling about.? shocked

EVERY educational measurement system in the world puts prime emphasis on testing literacy and numeracy skills. That is language and maths are of fundamental importance. There is nothing progressive whatsoever about not focusing on this vital aspect of learning.

That some people are able to memorise facts and get top grades is not a cogent reason to do away with language testing.

We care too much about what others are doing. How about we actually start something of our own.

Sagamite:

So you recognise it is a problem?

It is a problem that children have no idea why they are being taught certain things. English should be an option.

Kobojunkie:

Just so we can agree on something, the fact that kids are taught English in school is not the root of the problem, right?

No.

tensor777:

What is all this root of problem talk.

It is rather obvious that a lot of university undergraduates did not have the opportunity to go to good English speaking schools in their formative years. That is the issue: the dearth of these nursery/primary schools in Nigeria, not the language itself.

What we have now is that federal universities have to serve as remedial centres for those   deficient in these vital literacy skills otherwise these students would find it very difficult to sail through the university system.

LOL.

must_a_far:

look at the bigger picture, its really not about being able to communicate in english (reading or writing). even if these subjects are taught in pidgin(which would be interesting to say the least) the willingness and readiness to learn on the part of the student, the teaching techniques of the teachers, the ancient teaching schemes provided by the govt if not changed would only produce the same results.

This is my main point though. Changing the system (Approach, Techniques e.t.c) whether in English or Not.

Sagamite:

So you are saying it is not a problem if our university graduates cannot write or speak English adequately?

In this present dispensation, No. Why should they be expected to.
You have to consider the root of a problem instead of harping on the fruits.

No one said to do away with English Language which is ever evolving.
Focusing on it as a way of measurement is just backward, besides Written English is not the same as Spoken.
People can cram and get an A, means ABSOLUTELY nothing (referring to my very post here)

Sagamite:

OK, allow me to retort:

You are saying: "You do not see a big deal if our high school and university leavers cannot speak or write English well. That the ability to do such is not really something that will get Nigeria anywhere?"

Please tell me I misintepreted or misconstrued your statements.

Exactly. The focus needs to be changed.

LOL. No, Where is Peckham?  cheesy

I was researching Personality Typing.

I think the word used was the 'Uninitiated'

0 Ogbe     - light - birth of Orunmila (wisdom)
15 Oyeku    - dark - Oludumare's Earthly creations
9 Iwori    - ask diviner for advice
6 Edi      - watch out for obstacles
12 Irosun   - crouch and wait and plan
3 Owonrin  - weather storms
14 Obara    - cooperate (each hand washes the other)
7 Okanran  - follow plans
8 Ogunda   - Ogun - use technology wisely
1 Osa      - overcome fear
13 Ika      - you reap what you sow
11 Oturopon - raise children well
2 Otura    - govern wisely
4 Irete    - if you refuse to sacrifice something,
              you may lose it anyway
10 Ose      - truth protects good and destroys evil
5 Ofun     - Oludumare creates Earth, the 16 Odu,
              the Orishas, and humans

There are 16 identified Types, and some say IFA was the god with 16 eyes.

I haven't ventured into 'primary' research yet, All I know is what I've found off the internet and books

I think any black soap would do.
We currently use Village Fresh.

Bentonite clay won't be sold at your local beauty store,
I don't think. But hey don't worry about it.

'English and Grammar' goes far beyond demagoguery.
We're all able to communicate properly with people from all regions of this country since we have a common language. And we can communicate effectively since we can speak decent English!
Since you're yet to pay any taxes in this country, in your case i'd have to agree with you that your command of English hasn't been of much use to Nigeria grin.

What happened to Pidgin? Last I checked that was what people from EVERY region understood or you are still forming you never knew pidgin till you got on Nairaland?

I take it you are kind of havin a laff, antya?

This is a serious issue, why would I be laughing over it

Please direct your complaint to the NUC and WAEC board that specified that Credits in English and Maths are the minimum requirement to obtain University admission. For now, that IS the standard students should aspire to. And frankly speaking, it's a perfectly rational benchmark.
Poor performance in English language exams can be tied to the decline in quality of spoken and written English in many young people these days.

Like it or not, English is our national language. It's a language that's supposed to be taught in all our schools, and hence is a language that students should rightly be tested in. Mastery of this language SHOULD be used as the benchmark for entry into institutions of higher learning in this country.
English is not the National language in either France or China. I'm really surprised you're bringing up such a watery argument. Is this deliberate?

Colomentality. SMH
Tell me how English and Grammar has helped this country, oops, Chris Okotie, Patrick Obahiaghon. . I forgot.

Bentonite Clay, Black Soap and Shea Butter have become my staple.

My sister has Hyper-pigmentation, used the Black soap, it cleared
she now went back to using all these other products
It came back and she's been proper pissed.
She just started using the black soap again, one of the best things ever!

I've read worse things but this is also serious, very very sad, too much baggage.

These things were wrong back then, they are still wrong and will always be.
It's left for us to 'Do the right thing'

I think my parents staying apart for long periods did cause some issues,
where we had to choose who we preferred.
Also, I wish they made more money.

I don't understand the need to have things like this plastered all over facebook.
People don't know what 'intimate' is anymore. I mean look at someone here,
posting pictures of his wedding all over nairaland. I wonder what point that is supposed to prove? undecided

It really doesn't matter, But your partner may be concerned that other people
would be trying to reach you because of your seemingly single status on there.

My experience was that of Young shall Grow from Enugu to Lagos. I don't know if those buses still exist, but it was terrible. The road was bad and the bus was pitching and rolling. Our bags keep falling from were they stuff them on top embarassed embarassed embarassed I don't think they are good for that Ore road.

LOL. I wanted to enter one of them, But the way they would bend on Ibadan- Lagos Expressway was scary enough.
The normal buses are bad enough, talk more of double decker on our Devil-ridden roads.
I think they stopped the use of the buses.

90% Nigerian parents would have been locked up, if in some other countries.

Putting on pressure on us to become what they wanted, not nurturing our own innate abilities.
Not being physically affectionate enough. The hugs only came officially but well with so many kids to hug I blame them.lol

It's funny how many translate the relationship with their parents to the relationship they have with God (those that believe)
Many Nigerians cannot see God as a loving father. God would say 'there is Grace' They would say 'I know, I just have to prove to you I am worthy'

Sad.

Maybe the students are just tired of cramming all that stuff
Maybe they actually want to learn something relevant to todays world

We need a new Education system.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the replies,

Question: Does the bible really say one must be a virgin ?  If it does where? I'm really curious

People Interpret the bible the way they want, and people who are not ready to open their heads
will accept whatever 'pastor' 'GO' 'Prophet' 'Papa' tells them.

The bible only said a man will leave his family and cleave to his wife,
there was no 'White wedding' , no condition/status or whatsoever. Pastors and co are just taking the mickey.

This is what happens when a church wields too much power over its members? Wtf? The couple are supposed to be in love and ought to be comfortable with each other BEFORE they come to the church to get hitched. Now they're doing a test. Even the virginity test would have been wrong, let alone a pregnancy test. So now that she's tested pregnant, she can't get married abi? To me it's all the more reason to get married ASAP. This thing is really appalling.

Hmm. . .profound.
