Vehicle prerequisites prior to CNG installation Vehicles presented for CNG conversion, should possess mechanical and electrical integrity. They should be as close to factory production standard as much as possible. Mechanically there should be no underbody rust, sound suspension system, tyres in good shape, Engine should be in top form with no excessive oil burn or oil shortage. Overheating issues are also forbidden for vehicles presented for conversion . Engine mounts and engine supports should also be in good shape to eliminate excessive rocking of the engine when in use. Check vehicle history for preventive maintenance cycle, items like coolant drian and refill , water pump replacement, timing belt replacement should be confirmed and replace if due. Electrical integrity, the wiring of the vehicle should be as close to factory production as possible, modifications that could cause drive train inefficiency cannot be tolerated, vehicle should be scanned for errors , and any issues surrounding the drivetrain should be fixed before conversion. Battery terminals and ground wiring rechecked to ensure there are no fire hazards. Sequential kits The gas flow is controlled by injectors that directly fit into the intake manifold next to the petrol injectors. Gas flow is monitored and adjusted electronically by a separate ECU for CNG. Sequential CNG kits can be installed only on vehicles that have electronic fuel injection systems. Fuel delivery is precise and more accurate than the venturi system. The advantages of the sequential CNG kit is in its CNG injection delivery, it is precise, and volume is controlled electronically , also it gets better gas mileage and much better performance. There is no need for frequent cleaning and re calibration. Types of CNG KITS There are 2 basic types of CNG kits in the market , the Sequential Kit and the Venturi Kit. Here’s how the two are different: Venturi Venturi CNG kits is a term that refers to the CNG mixing unit and how it delivers gas to the engine. Venturi kits are generally cheaper to install and less complex than sequential kits. A venturi kit behaves like a carburetor which dumps a fixed volume of gas based on throttle demand directly into the intake of the engine. A venturi-type CNG kit can be applied on any type of vehicle, whether it’s carburetor driven or fuel-injected, with or without an ECU. This type of CNG delivery is not very accurate and hence there are downsides of incorrect tuning that happen with venturi-type CNG kits. The disadvantage of a venturi-type CNG kit is that since it feeds a fixed amount of gas into the intake , there are issues of loss of pickup and stalling occasionally, when there is too much or too little gas in the system. It needs to be frequently serviced and calibrated accurately, which not everyone can get right. Advantages of the venturi type of CNG kit is its low cost of installation. There are great untapped potentials in the use of CNG, and if the government gets its implementation right it will bring down our reliance on crude oil derivatives and also bring down the price of transportation. What are the advantages of using CNG in automotive industry. 1. It is cheaper to run (an average of ₦60per KM on petrol vs ₦21 per km on CNG. ) Real world data. 2. It is cleaner and eco friendly and if you care about green house gasses and the ozone layer CNG is gives off the least pollution in fossil fuels. 3. It is maintenance friendly . Engines running on CNG have less carbon deposits on parts of the engine that come in contact with combustion, engine oil stays cleaner, engine runs quieter . However there are downsides to using CNG . 1. Currently Limited Availability: For now there are less than 100 active CNG stations for over 220million Nigerians. The govt is working on having CNG stations in all the nooks and crannies of the country, so let's keep hope alive . 2. Reduced Performance: CNG powered vehicles have reduced performance compared to petrol-powered vehicles. Not as bad as it seems though. 3. Higher installation costs: The initial costs are currently high, but again I hear there is a lot of government intervention in bringing in kits at subsidised rates, so again let's keep hope alive. 4. Reduced boot space : This is self explanatory, the boot space will be shared with the CNG cylinder. Something has to give for running a vehicle on lower costs 5. Limited range. Now that's a bummer. A vehicle equipped with a 2.0 to 2.4 cubic capacity engine running on a 65-85L CNG tank will cover about 200km on a full tank. The cost of moving from one point to the other has tripled due to the rise in fueling costs, but there is fuel which has been around for quite some time, but no one really paid so much attention to it, it is called CNG compressed natural gas . I can remember as far back as 2016 when bus drivers loading Lagos to Ibadan had converted buses and would fill up at mowe ibafo area before heading to Ibadan so it's been around for a while commercially. So how is CNG gotten and why is it cheaper than conventional fuels (diesel, petrol , kerosine, LPG ). Compressed natural Gas in its basic form is found in the ground while drilling for crude oil. The gas is then separated from oil goes through several levels of purification , then is compressed to about 3600 pounds per square inch. CNG is cheaper because you do not need a billion dollar refinery to process the end product, the cost of separation and purification is relatively very cheap. Unlike the other derivatives of crude oil (diesel, petrol , kerosine , jet fuel etc) that are controlled by world crude oil prices, CNG is in a world of its own, not in competition with any fuels.
