Car TalkRe: Maintenance Tips On Cars. by GAZZUZZ(op): 3:20am On Apr 18, 2024
Zerepublic:
Greetings House,
Help needed on a Suzuki Every MiniVan (Korope)

Car Details
Name: Suzuki Every (DA52V)
Year: 2001
Engine type: F6A
Transmission: Manual 5speed & reverse

Problem Point: Gear and gear shifting

Problem History:
Before any work was done, the original issue was on the gear 1,
In a normal working manual gear, the car moves as you lift and throttle after putting in gear 1 and hands-off the gear stick.
in this car, the car just stands and stalls when put in gear 1, any throttling just produces a humming sound (separate from the revving of the engine), no movement forward. The gear stick still stays in gear 1 position, it doesnt pull out or returns to neutral.
I noticed when the gear 1 is initially shifted into and throttle pressed, the gear stick heads just pops back 1inch, like a little nod back, like its about to return to neutral but it does not and remains there.

BUT BUT

while still in that same gear 1 position, any extra touch on the gear stick, liking pushing it forward more into the gear 1 position, the gear 1 responds and the car moves as normal. ALL other gears shift and enter smoothly and the ride is smooth until there's need to use gear 1 again and this dance repeats.

WORK HISTORY:
First the gear cable hanger close to the gearbox was adjusted to lie back a bit more, like towards the gear box, problem stayed, then the drive-gear cable that has been with the car was said to be slacked by the mechanic1 so another was gotten, problem stayed. Then a gear cable guy (who came and tried setting the drive-gear cable to match, since he said the gears 1-5 were selecting on the gearbox) now said the cable length was too long.
To avoid damaging the new cable, he said the previous one can be repaired well and reduced in length to do the job, cable got repaired & reduced, problem stayed. Cable guy said problem was with the gearbox.

Took gearbox for repair and was told by gear-man that the gears inside are arranged such that 1&2 are together, 3&4 together, 5 & reverse separate and I have to find gear 1&2 to change mine.

Thing is: gear-man said gear 1 teeth is washing, and so I asked to see it, but all the tooths on the gear shaft were in the same health state all round ( including the perfect gear-2,3,4,5,reverse), so I wasnt convinced, especially with his gra-gra to do change. Oya, how do we do the change, he said parts is scarce so he's suggesting I go buy the 4wd drive gear box (which is cheaper than my 2wd gearbox), he'll take some parts inside and repair my gearbox, okay I hear you, what level of guarantee is there that this problem is surely gone with that method, he cant give guarantee of how long this method will last me (meaning I could be back with this problem in few months time or may be weeks sef). So I took the budget overshoot and got a tokunbo 2wd gearbox, let matter settle for mathias once and for all.

Sidenote: The engine crankshaft was due for change so the engine was dropped and overhauled. Tokunbo crankshaft, New Conrods, Piston&rings, tokunbo top cylinder, gaskets, fresh oil. So engine has been done but could not be properly tested due to gear yawa. Engine-Mechanic 1 did the overhaul and left b4 the full testing due to this gear issue.

In getting tokunbo gearbox, seller gave me wereybox that was not entering gear1 during testing, returned it and got another one, second one no gree enter gear2, to climb small hill during testing, mechanic2 (a more experienced hand with korope) rev motor until clutch plate burn, so tokunbo clutch plate enter the show (ONLY CLUTCH plate, i didnt replace the pressure plate),

Third gearbox (ticked-off as good tokunbo grade gear by mechanic2) was mounted, car went for testing and it wasnt picking up speed as a car shud, to allow you upshift gears, and in trying to fix this, top cylinder was grounded and revalved. Another more experienced gear-cable man was brought to set cables and we ended changing both drive & reverse cables to another tokunbo (bought personally by the gear-cable man). Fuel injector mouth was changed and car went for testing

CURRENT PROBLEM STATE:
Now the car picks speed as it shud and the gears UPSHIFT smoothly BUT it doesnt DOWNSHIFT eg from 3 to 2, even when the car has slowed down to the right speed to allow downshift. UNLESS the car comes to a complete stop or near complete stop before its allows a DOWNSHIFT, at this point, you basically start from gear 1 again and upshift until problem repeats.

PLEASE OOO, WHAT WOULD CAUSE A GEAR TO UPSHIFT FINE AND SMOOTH BUT NOT DOWNSHIFT UNLESS THE CAR COMES TO A DEAD STOP OR NEAR-COMPLETE STOP.

Great attetion to detail. Sadly you are just working with a lot of bad parts.

The gears are either not properly disengaged or the gearbox is bad.

Try adjusting the clutch lever if this does not work, replace gearbox .

Have you considered this CNG retrofitting for short distance commuting vehicles like NAPEPS and microbuses sir?

Yes I have.

Will be releasing a realistic approach to CNG penetration nationwide very soon

Oga Gazzuzz,

Abeg i get an mdx 013 with tpms and battery sensor light on. The tires are well inflated and the battery works fine. There is also a sound coming from the front driver wheel. Is there a good mechanic (that does home pickup) you can recommend? Or one around Magboro/Arepo axis

No, this is not what I am talking about. After the retrofit, there is no diesel usage in the vehicle. Only Autogas CNG is used all through, because it is a mono conversion.

Diesel tank is even taken out. So nowhere to store diesel in the vehicle.

Dual-fuel conversion will mean that the vehicle uses both diesel and CNG, and can switch between both sources of fuel.
The only other possible option would be petrol, but would be a bit complicated .

I have seen people who do a mono retrofit for their petrol and diesel engines, in order to convert to gas. Stop talking about what you do not know.

I have friends who work for an Autogas company in Lagos. I was even part of one of their workshops in Lagos in 2021, and we saw vehicles they converted to run on mono Autogas CNG.

The owner of the vehicles was an expatriate who was tired of their drivers stealing diesel from their large trucks, and siphoning petrol from their official cars.

Their factory was already running on natural gas as they were located close to a pipeline in Ogun state.
diesel engine , retrofit CNG .

Blending a mixture of intake air and natural gas , aim to bring down the amount of diesel burnt.

Same compression ignition engine used. Ecu and CNG injectors introduced to monitor performance.

When you run out of CNG , system switches back to diesel .

When you run out of diesel system shuts down

Is this what you are talking about?

Great topic of discussion.

Diesel (compression ignition) conversion to CNG (spark ignition)

Full CNG conversion would involve replacing

Head cylinder
Pistons
Timing and ignition components
Introduce a distributor.

Aim to run engine on CNG . Only other fueling that can be introduced is petrol.

Is the other option petrol?

He will only give you the price in USD, and not in naira, so that people will not easily be able to get clarity on the costs.

There is NO component of the CNG conversion kit, that is manufactured locally.

How much do people earn? That they will spend over half a million or more to convert their vehicles?

Gazzuz is just promoting his new found business.

He is not interested in whether it is a sustainable solution or not.

I advise people always to do a dual-fuel conversion that can use both CNG and petrol, and NOT a mono-fuel conversion that uses only CNG.

Otherwise, if CNG runs out in your car and you are far from an Autogas CNG station, you will be stranded on the road.

Just rent a towing van when this happens to you....
No one does a mono retrofit for CNG in vehicles.

You would know that if you researched.

The major problem of CNG is dat it's takes hours to fill. Between 4 to 8hours unlike petrol that I can fill my tank within 5mins.

We need better option jare.
There is a reason why there are no queues at CNG stations , one of such reasons is the fast fill up.

Currently it takes about 5mins to fill up a standard 60-65L water capacity CNG tank.

You would know this if you have visited a CNG station.

Car TalkCNG Price Fall To N200/scm, Markerters Unveil More Stations In Lagos by GAZZUZZ(op): 7:56am On Apr 14, 2024
CNG to flood Lagos April .

NIPCO GAS is about to promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, as alternative to Premium Motor Spirit, PMS also called petrol in the commercial city of Lagos after it has announced completion of four CNG stations in Lagos.

The facilities would be opened for commercial operations by end of April to become the first of its kind in the state which is now contending with long queues at filling stations.

The managing director ,NIPCO Gas Ltd ,Nagendra Verma, briefing the media on the development at the weekend, said the firm has been involved in AutoCNG development and expansion since 2009.

Verma, who assured sustainability of supply after commissioning said presently, for Cars, Taxis and Keke’s; AutoCNG is being sold at NGN200/standard cubic feet scm against the petrol price of NGN610 per litre, in Lagos and NGN230/scm against the PMS price of NGN670/ltr in Abuja.

The managing director, further informed that similarly for heavy commercial vehicles; AutoCNG is being sold at NGN260/scm against the AGO price of NGN1250/ltr in Lagos and NGN290/scm against the AGO price of NGN1300/ltr in Abuja.

“NIPCO Gas is sure that with the continuous focus and push by the current government, AutoCNG will become the Choice fuel for Nigeria which has the potential to reduce the pressure on importation as well as on Forex.” he added.

According to him, AutoCNG is a project for masses and of National Cause and Importance, adding “We are sure once expanded across Nigeria; will surely and definitely relieve the masses and motorists from high fuel cost.

“We continuously seek blessing and support of the Government and media to make AutoCNG a Reliever, Cleaner and Greener fuel of Nigeria”

Speaking on the company’s strategy, Verma said, initially the company started with Benin City and expanded the AutoCNG network to Ibafo in Ogun State and later-on in Kogi State.

He stressed further that with the initiatives and clear mandate by the current government, AutoCNG network also expanded to Abuja FCT, Ibadan in Oyo State and Oron in Akwa Ibom State.

NIPCO Gas presently operates 15 AutoCNG stations across Nigeria and CNG vehicles from Lagos can travel up to Abuja and Kaduna by taking CNG from the in-between NIPCO Gas AutoCNG stations. We are sure, soon motorists can travel across every nook and cranny of Nigeria.

Under current government directives, NIPCO Gas has partnered with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL for expansion of AutoCNG stations across various states of Nigeria.

“ Partnering with NNPCL under directives from The Presidency brings along a huge sense of responsibility and commitment towards masses of Nigeria and Government.

“NIPCO Gas is honoured with this trust and belief by the Government and NNPCL and have assured that we will not leave any stone unturned to make this AutoCNG expansion plan a reality which will relieve thousands and millions of citizens from the pain they are going through presently.” added Verma

He also disclosed that under the current partnership, 35 AutoCNG are planned to be constructed in phased manner. He also revealed that locations for 19 CNG stations have been identified and the firm has received stage-wise approval from NMDPRA and other statutory authorities.

He said 4 CNG stations in Lagos are scheduled to be completed in April/May, 2024, adding, “For making this AutoCNG expansion project a reality, we are getting due support and guidance from all including but not limited to PCNGI, NMDPRA, SON, NNPC, other Ministries and Departments and Media too who are also keen to see this as reality in near future.”

Verma, said gas distribution and AutoCNG projects are highly capital-intensive projects which require huge investment and highest level of commitment and perseverance, and expressed hope that with support from all and with continuous push from the Presidency, the firm will surely make it happen.

He went further to state that NIPCO Gas in addition to AutoCNG is also expanding the gas transportation pipeline towards Ibadan and gas distribution network in Lekki Free Zone.

“All these projects require huge investment and a high gestation period.

Once the above projects are commissioned, it will help in greater way in deepening the utilisation of indigenous gas which still remains under-utilised and reduce dependency on importation of other fossil fuels thereby reducing the pressure on Forex.” he added

Tyres kept in storage , will become brittle, crack and rupture.

Tyres kept in service are still useable several years after manufacture.

Nigerians are SUPREMELY idiotic.

These fools put SEVERAL little kids on a boat that has probably NEVER been maintained since it was bought second-hand many years ago and refused to provide life jackets.

When the boat capsizes and lives are lost, they'll blame the "river goddess".

The school should be tracked and shut down. The owner should be locked up along with the teacher that took the kids on the useless "excursion".

The 206 is a budget vehicle . Smaller tyres mean cheaper car anything to bring down the cost wink

Also smaller tyres also better for fuel economy.

But in the Nigerian context , you are up Against bad roads, and availability.

185 or 195 will suffice without issues
