Testing.... Startup is excellent, feels sexy like when I got it . Unfortunately because of the lock down i cannot test the power loss (speeds of 140-180km/hr ![]() Waiting on uncle sonwo and grandpa Hari to open the roads so I can test that. Hope you enjoyed viewing. If the lock down persists, i will open another thread for brake pad replacement .

Ideally i should check fuel pressure at supply line to ensure pump is in excellent condition, but the fuel pressure tester is in the workshop, so will not bother testing, will lookout for an elimination of the symptoms that made me replace the pump. (Delayed/multiple cranks before start and power loss)

Swapped harness and installed in reverse. Very important, check for fuel leaks.
|
There are 3 wires in the fuel pump assy. Positive and negative to power the pump , and the low fuel signal wire. Low fuel warning works as a floater system and a switch. When the fuel is low , the floater sinks and makes contact with ground which throws a warning light if it is consistent. The signal from the float goes to the engine ECU and not the cluster directly. The bike is not equipped with a fuel gauge, only a low fuel warning system. When you have the warning lamp on, you have less than 5liters of fuel left which is an equivalent of over 50-70miles.

Hit a snag, the harness had been modified in the USA , so I had to splice mine and attach to the new one.
|
installation is pretty reverse of everything that was done.

Fuel pump assy out, there was a thread I created about Nigerian fuel, explains why we replace pumps on vehicles with young mileages. This bike is barely 12,000miles ![]() https://www.nairaland.com/4662306/fuel-pumps-nigeria

The fuel tank is air tight , and this bike works with all the conventional systems obtainable on a regular gasoline engine. It has the MAP system with the 5v principle , the throttle position sensor , the intake air control valve 12v pulse injectors, ignition coils , even has a socket for an oxygen sensor but seems the feature was not enabled in the version.

Fuel pump assy is held down by five 10mm bolts. Comparing my oyibo used fuel assy with the one fastened to the tank.
|
Tank is free and all we have to do is pull back. I should mention at this point , the bike is naturally aspirated fuel injection, and the fuel pump is inside the fuel tank, normal pressure values expected at fuel rail is about 3.5bar.

There's a small waste line incase the tank is over filled when fuelling , the pipe under tank on the left side.

Removing main fuel line and harness. Prop the tank up a bit to see the fuel supply line You would need a flat head screw driver to prop the red part loose. Same flat head screw driver is required to unhook the fuel assy harness On the left side

Unscrewing parts

There are two plastic accessories left and right of the tank that should be removed, they are held down by a star screw. The tank is held down by two 10mm bolts

didn't get all the fuel out, but it was enough. Next take out the seat and unscrew the tank.
|
I had a full tank last time I parked it, it usually takes about 15liters of fuel which normally covers about 140/160miles riding in town. So I was able to drain off about 12liters, got my mouth sanitized while doing it ![]()

Armed with an empty 30ltr Jerry can, a toolbox, off we went. First thing first, start the bike to be sure it's still working

I have been having loss of power and delayed starts on my motor bike , I initially took out the fuel pump assy and clean out the strainer filter which made it improve a little, but I still was not getting power on demand and the delayed starts were becoming embarrassing. So I went on eBay and selected a brand new fuel pump, and a used complete fuel pump assy. Added a few other Kawasaki parts and sent the links to https://www.nairaland.com/selfmadeolx . I made payment in naira and 8days later parts arrived. I have been lazy about installing the pump since the lockdown started , but today I was courageous, I informed my sidekick/camera man (Gaz jr) we would be going to fix the bike he was excited he would be leaving the house finally .Here's how it went.
