PoliticsRe: Opposition Lawmakers Hail Ajimobi's Achievements by Gbawe: 11:55am On Jun 14, 2013
RedReact: This is how governance should be, as politics is diferent from governance. When in politics, self-interest might be the watchword for the party members; but when in governance, common-interest should be the key to deliver good governance.
What some of our politicians don't know is that when an administrator is performing well, it will help them build up their ideology so that they can present an better alternative to the one in power. If the people are convinced enough, they vote them in and if not voted-in, they learn from the mistakes and polish on their delivery and give it a go another time.
Good one from the lawmakers at OYHA, as I don't see them as oppositions at all so far they are serving the interest of the people that voted them to office.
You are right. On reflection, "governance" is a better choice of words. Your post is a good one all round.

These paving stones are used for remedial work during the rainy season. They are used to cover pot holes, repair roads etc, before major work is done during the dry season. The most exciting part of the article for me, is the idea that the machines might one day be made in Lagos.
Indeed. I would however urge caution because I think innovation must be cost effective. It must never be pursued, in this day and age where logistic challenges are now totally simplified, for the sake of vacuously proving that we can "manufacture".

By all means, we should go for it if we have the expertise, raw materials and conducive environment to produce this machine for domestic use and to sell even to others. Once again, it is good to note Fashola is thinking along the lines of us manufacturing these machines and I would bet the thinking of the Lagos governor, as the proactive and well-informed administrator he is, is influenced by revelations such as that stated below. It would make sense to plan for and take advantage of what is written below.

Construction industry in positive outlook, grows 13% in 2012

Fri, 2013-06-14 00:00

The construction industry in Nigeria is showing positive outlook, with about 13 percent growth in 2012, according to industry watchers.

The industry consists mainly of residential and commercial buildings, estates and physical infrastructure development.

Analysts say construction plays a critical role in the economies of developing as well as industrialised countries, contributing significantly to their GDP.

According to Ronald Ashkin, technical director at Growth and Employment in States (GEMS), Nigeria’s construction sector is Africa’s largest, and it grew by 13 percent in 2012 and is expected to grow at the fastest rate in the world through 2020.

Ashkin, who spoke at a press conference in Lagos to announce the introduction of a new block moulding technology into the Nigerian property market, explained that GEMS as a development programme, works in Nigeria’s construction and real estate sector, with the objective of increasing income and create jobs for the poor.

Ashkin’s projections corroborate a 10-year forecast from Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics posits, which states that “construction growth in Nigeria will be the fastest of all markets”, pointing out that, though China will overtake the US as the world’s biggest construction market by 2018, the fastest growth will happen in Nigeria.

The report, which named Nigeria ‘global hotspot from here to 2020’, says the nation’s construction growth is even faster than India’s, which reflects increased wealth.

Analysts note further that in the past five to 10 years, the industry has witnessed considerable growth, which is a direct product of the country’s huge and growing population and rapid urbanisation.

Golden Tulip Hotel berths in Ibadan

The adage that ‘a journey of a thousand mile starts with a step’, came to play as a 14-year-dream of building an edifice that will not only service the needs of genuine hospitality seekers, but also serve the test of time, joined the hotel business in Oyo State.

Golden Tulip, Owu Crown Hotel Ibadan, made a grand entrance into the hospitality industry as the first international brand in the city of the firsts as it was inaugurated recently, to offer international standard, local flavour and continental style to the people of Ibadan.

The grand opening which did not only herald the international brand, but also stepped up hotel services while also creating employment and adding values to the aesthetic splendour of the host community played host to who is who in the South Western states of Nigeria.

The roll call at the Golden Tulip, Ibadan, was a testimony of the brand’s successes in Nigeria as it had in attendance big players in Nigerian hotels and resorts in the likes of Odu’a Investment Group, owners of the Western Hotels, Mic Com Golf Resort, Protea Ikeja, Living Spring Hotel, Osogbo among others.

Others include former governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Chairman of MicCom Golf Hotel, Chief Tunde Ponle, and Ikolaba of Ibadan, Chief Lekan Alabi, who represented the Are Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji Arisekola Alao, Group Managing Director, Odu’a Investment Company, Mr Adebayo Jimoh, Chairman Protea Ikeja, Alhaji Tajudeen Owoyemi, traditional rulers and clerics.

Speaking at the opening of the hotel, a former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was represented by the former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola expressed high hope on the services of the state-of the-art luxury hotel is going to offer to leisure and conference seekers.
Chief Obasanjo who said his absence was not deliberate, added that he is optimistic that the experience and wonderful treat he got few days before the inauguration of the hotel was a confirmation that the owners have done a good job at bringing a world brand to the doorstep of the people.

Oyinlola also commended Alhaji Fatai Akinbade for investing his time, energy and money in stepping up hotel business in Ibadan, describing the hotel as a gigantic project.
Bishop Wale Oke who also graced the ceremony commended Alhaji Akinbade for his foresight, touch of sophistication at locating a world brand hotel in Ibadan, and prayed that the purpose of establishing the outfit will continue to flourish in the state’s hospitality industry.

“We have longed for this and thanked God that you were used to make this a reality, I prayed that all you need to sustain this business will always be at your disposal.”
While welcoming guests at the ceremony, the Chairman, Golden Tulip, Owu Crown Hotel, Ibadan, Alhaji Akinbade, said that an international brand is long overdue for the Ibadan hospitality sector.

According to him, the hotel project was conceived over 14 years ago with the objective of intervening in the hospitality industry in this part of the country, which is regarded as the economic nerve centre of Nigeria.
‘The beauty and aesthetics you see here today was because of the time, money and efforts we invested to make it a reality.

“This hotel is proud of 150 workers trained specifically to meet the service request of all departments in the Golden Tulip Ibadan with reference to customers’ needs, comfort and satisfaction.
“In addition, the hotel is equipped with the-state-of-the-art facilities that can compete with any international hotel and we thanked the management of Protea, South Africa for setting the standard for the hotel to achieve the befitting edge in terms of fittings and fixtures.

“I want to assure you that the management and staff of Golden Tulip Hotel chain are not only poised to taking the hospitality industry in Ibadan to the next level through our sustainable customer-friendly culture, but also to chart a new course in the economic viability of the host state,” Alhaji Akinbade said.

Osun names airport after MKO

MAY 3, 2013 BY TUNDE ODESOLA, OSOGBO

An airport under construction in Ido-Osun, Osun State, has been named after the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, by the Osun State Government.

Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Mr. Ajibola Basiru, stated this on Thursday during a news conference held at the Governor’s Office, Abere, Osogbo.

Basiru said that the aircraft maintenance facility of the airport would be ready by next year, while international flights would also commence next year.

The airport, which was formerly an aerodrome, had been abandoned for several years by subsequent administrations in Osun before the Rauf Aregbesola administration decided to reconstruct it.

Basiru said the fencing of the airport had been completed just as all gates and security facilities of the airport had been completed.

Commenting on Osun Citizens Mediation Centre, a government agency engaged in conflict resolution, Basiru said the centre had received 84 complaints, adding that none of the complaints bordered on religious disagreement.

He said 30 of the complaints had been resolved amicably within the first month of the inauguration of the centre.

Ajibola said plans were ongoing by South-West governments to construct a railway that would pass through the various states in the region.

He said the proposed rail line is tagged, ‘Great Western Rail Line,’ adding that the “rail is the first phase of the project being planned under the current regional integration agenda in the region”.

He added, “The project if completed would further boost the growth and development of the region and will also create employment and commercial activities in the zone.

“Memorandum of Understanding would soon be signed on the arrangement of Public Private Partnership on it and we believe that the project would enable the people, especially the business men and women in the region to transact business without transport hitch.”

That is why I did not bother responding further to what he said. For many around here, there is no humility to accept that they jumped to conclusion because of lack of knowledge. Is there a way to spin the ignorant post below? Where does one even begin?

Laudable project but the question is...should this project be high on priority list? What economic advantage is Lagos getting from this project? yea....i know the argument(foreign investment, revenue..blah blah we know this project is not for the masses....then who is it for? Do we need to spend so much money on a massive project at this time when other useful infrastructure lay dormant and wasting away?

Who is controlling this project? Did Fashola and Tinubu mortgage the future of Lagos for political gain? How many years concession for the backers of this project? Too much hype about this Fashola guy and most people has swallow it hook, line and sinker, i was in Lagos and i didn't see much improvement to march the hype.

Personally i think this project is a waste, hype, unnecessary at the moment and nobody know how much is costing each tax payer in Lagos.

Some great points throughout. At the end of the day, a strong and vibrant opposition is needed to keep the ruling Party on its feet. You are correct to state that the democracy of some African nations are stronger than that of Nigeria because of that very point i.e strong opposition able to depose a ruling Party performing badly. This is often the best situation for making ruling Parties perform optimally worldwide.

The exposed politicians in the PDP, i.e those into the core science of politics and not just 'chopulate disciples', will appreciate the arrival of the APC as a badly needed and long awaited evolutionary stage our politics needed to reach to herald further progress for Nigeria.

There are hardly many saints in Nigerian politics but the electorate must look at the history and record of candidates.

A man who has a history of delivering will likely continue to do so when elected to office to the benefit of the electorate.

Whereas a mediocrity with no history of achievement will carry his incompetence into elected office. The big difference is that many lives will be ruined needlessly. Whatever ACN has going on, they generally embrace achievers and folks who deliver results. The end result of that ideology is what we are seeing now. Simple as that.

If anything, I hope the hard-work of all these ACN Governors will convince more States to boot out the indolent PDP in 2015. Our entire nation needs inspired individuals who will bring progress to every corner of Nigeria.

The SW is now fully vindicated for booting out the "nest of killers" i.e the PDP.

I hope you know this is part of this bigger 30km Gbongan/Akoda expressway project I mentioned here a few days ago to develop an ecnomically importand corridor:

http://www.osundefender.org/?p=103546

Gbongan/Akoda ExpressWay: Osun’s Economic Beehive

In the state of Osun today like the Yoruba would say the tune is ‘new dawn, new drum’. As day dawns in the state of the Virtuous so does the Aregbesola administration comes up with not only a new progressive idea but also one form of developmental stride or the other. Of course for a visionary, focused and determined leader no challenge is insurmountable.

What we are witnessing in the state of Osun today in terms of democracy dividends never enjoyed by the people of the state before, sort of lends credence to the popular saying that; ‘where there is will, there is a way’.
With the award of Gbongan/Akoda road contract recently to Ratcon Construction Nigeria Limited, the can-do administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola of the state of Osun is again set to achieve another feat in the area of infrastructure renewal, a key aspect of his administration policy thrust.

The road, which was awarded at the cost of N29.3 billion is going to be a dual carriageway and not only this, it will also carry along with it construction of a trumpet bridge to be called Chief Bisi Akande Trumpet Bridge which will be constructed at Gbongan junction.

Reports in this newspaper quoted the Special Adviser to Ogbeni Governor on Works and Transport, Engineer Oladepo Sabiti Amudah who signed the contract with the company, as assuring that the road – which will be financed by the company with initial mobilisation of 15% – will be completed in 18 months. The 30 km expressway according to the Special Adviser, will include four pedestrian bridges, street lights, two layers of asphaltic surface with 60mm and 40mm thickness, reinforced concrete side drain, culverts and ditches, reinforced retaining wall, earthwork landscaping and road marking and signs. With this description even a lay man can easily have an insight into the quality of work to be delivered by the company. And it also shows that Ogbeni Aregbesola has a penchant for quality as evident in the roads he oversaw their constructions when he was commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in Lagos state.

The road revolution going on in the state of Osun under Ogbeni Aregbesola’s leadership deserves commendation. In contradistinction to what obtained during the era of the locusts (Oyinlola and company era) when inter-state and intra-city roads experienced unprecedented paralysis – being all things but passable – the roads in the state are now undergoing massive transformation. This is quite a feat as political and good governance observers with an eye on spectacular performance in government know that the condition of roads serves as one of the most physical measures of a government’s performance. Good roads no doubt enhance commercial activities and serve as a catalyst for economic growth while it boosts people’s happiness.

In saner climes this is why good road network cannot be removed from the priorities of governments. Obviously if our nation is to be enlisted on the world map of development ours must not be different. Ogbeni Aregbesola knows this very well hence the road revolution initiatives he gladly embarks upon.

As we have consistently mentioned on this page the difference between a responsible and purposeful government like the one in the state now and its do-nothing predecessor headed by Oyinlola and his bunch of excuse givers, is just too clear. For instance the Gbongan/Akoda road construction project which is the subject-matter of this editorial had no head or tail for eight years of Oyinlola’s paralysis. Rather than doing that road even with the billions of naira his government borrowed from the bank at the tail the end of his government it only revelled in wasting the fund on white elephant project that never saw the light of the day – construction of stadia, that is.

And not only for Gbongan/Akoda road project alone, the same unpalatable fate befell other projects embarked upon by Oyinlola’s maladministration.
By the time the Gbongan/Akoda road is delivered it will surely serve as Osun’s economic beehive. Being one of the strategic roads, and if we are not making a mistake here the most strategic one leading to the state Osun economy will experience an unprecedented boost at the completion of the road. We have absolute confidence in the ability of Ratcon Construction Nig. Ltd. to deliver the goods. We therefore urge the company to live up to expectation as a tested and trusted construction company. We wish both the state government and the company a glorious end as far as this newly awarded road contract is concerned.

No. He has no shame because, as I have pointed out many times, he does not see the right order of things as befits 'best universal practices'. The Nigerian Presidency is disgracing even if people like Insecure9gerian do not have the neutrality to discern that.

Will the PDP also ask for debate tomorrow when Buhari talks to BBC radio? Will they tell Rochas to meet them for a Microphone fight-off too when Okorocha gives a speech? Meanwhile the entire world sees that the Government shows no interest in addressing the issues raised by so many critics. What if David Cameron turns around to ask GEJ why has he not taken Ribadu's advise and directed we stop selling our crude through traders as the only major exporter doing so since this is abetting monumental theft and fraud against Nigeria and robbing the nation of badly-needed income? Can Cameron not rightly say "I would do this in seconds as a leader searching for solutions for the UK"?

What is the point then challenging others to debate when they correctly show up your deficiency you have have no interest in addressing?

Nothing in Africa is near to challenging it's unique potentials if the State is optimally developed. Eko Altantic City is even only one thing to keep an eye on. The development of the Lekki corridor will be huge for Nigerian and, directly, West Africa once the planned International airport is delivered. The opening up of the Badagry axis will also have huge implication for Lagos, Nigeria and Africa as well.

If you see how overdeveloped some Countries of the world are, i.e Japan, to the extent reclamation of designated 'green' land is now inevitable, then you will appreciate the potentials for development Nigeria has because it's teeming population has so many virgin land to develop and spread into.
PoliticsRe: PDP Challenges APC To Debate On Programmes by Gbawe:
This outburst, once again, is indicative of the paranoia of the universally unwanted, unpopular and dying GEJ Government over the willing audience the yet to be registered APC is gaining. Tinubu only gave a speech to a packed-out British diasporan congregation in the UK on Tuesday and a Presidency one would expect to be busy with pressing issues is challenging the APC that "get off the bus let us fight" (Bo le ka ja). Perhaps in desperate recognition of how the world is, in the face of the monumental failings of the PDP, more willing to listen to what the brightest alternative platform has to say.

Nationhood, especially as involves Countries that have significant and wider implications for world development, is a much bigger concept that is far beyond the machinations of a few unintelligent and myopic mortals like GEJ and his gang of corrupt and self-serving mercenaries.

Pessimism and criticism need to be sensible and logical ... not just uttered for it's sake alone. You see an article that reveals phase one of this project is is already almost sold out off-plan and 2 years before even the first building is ready and you are talking of "Ghost City"?

Lagos is no different to London, New York and many other mega Cities of the world in that real Estate rules are very different to the norm because these Cities are concentration of extraordinary activities that affect so many people throughout the world. Eko Atlantic is actually fanning into what Lagos must be not what it wants to be.

Pukkah: Nice project but they need to spare a thought for the transport needs of the 150,000 people (employees) that will daily commute to and from the City.
Within the City itself, getting around should be relatively easy with a transport mix that would include tram-linkage (see image below). Getting to the City should not be too difficult because many lane entry and exit roads are planned. Modular links , as specific transport challenges arise, could be added to existing State rail lines as well.

When you see many examples of projects like these done seamlessly throughout the world, such as how many new light rail stations and even temporary transport link were created to accommodate the huge influx of people that descended on East London for the 2012 Olympics, then you appreciate what innovation, great engineering effort and world-class technical expertise is all about.
