dasparrow: I do not know this British lady but I feel sorry for her based on what she had to go through. I am sure she will never see Kenya the same way again. I am curious though, which African countries are indeed friendly to African foreigners living in their midst? I know you have traveled Africa extensively so I would like to hear your view on that please.
My dear brother, the sad and truthful answer is "not many". You can always feel adequately comfortable in many African Countries but the truth is that you are only a serious conflict away from moving from "settled" to "hounded" if you get into a serious conflict with an indigene of your host Nation. This is singularly the reason why I always have an issue with the pan-africanists on Nairaland with zero on-the-ground experience to correct their misguided impression of Africans being virtuous and united victims of injustice from "outsiders". Africans, in my experience, do the most wicked and savage things to each other. They can hate each other passionately and I do not have enough time to give real examples of this.

It is always attractive to read the most intellectually impressive literature and then take sides with your own and with no appreciation for the reality on the ground. Not many could have been more pan-Africanist than I was in the past as a cocooned diasporan proud of his African origin. The truth however, when I began travelling in Africa, was ugly. It is what Africans are not ready to confront. You can be in the trendiest clubs/bars in most fairly modern African capital cities to find that your own African ladies only have time and eyes for white/Lebanese men simply because we do not even believe in ourselves despite the hollow rhetoric we deceive and enslave each other with when we should be confronting the truth about our fractured and unhealthy psyche.

In my opinion, no African Country is mature enough to consistently and fairly protect the interest of immigrants in majority of instances. This, to a large extent and regardless of what silly pan-Africanist Nairalanders say, is due to how Africans, on average, are still not developed or sophisticated enough to note what matter and live by it consistently. I personally find it laughable we fret about racism because Africa has a severe problem with prejudice and xenophobia today.

For Nigerians engaged in business across Africa, I will always advise them to try and get the best out of their diasporan African base. The big 'but' is that they must do it with humility and grace because you cannot demand sophistication from a man that he does not have. Important therefore to be gracious, humble and non-threatening or intimidating.

Nigerians, however well-connected in their African diasporan bases, should not make the mistake of getting into any 'entitlement' tussle with indigenes of those Nations. When push comes to shove, you will lose. Do your business, stay grounded and try and repatriate healthy profit homewards.

Kenyanstar: NIGERIANS ABUSING KENYA'S HOSPITALITY.

Kenya is an economic powerhouse in africa and probably among the best emerging economies in the world... You can take a look at what kenya offers before giving unsolicited comments. Nigeria might be large in Numerical population but very backward and archiac both in economy and social life. https://www.nairaland.com/51356/nairobi-photos-kenya-beautiful-east . Chinedu knows that going back to Nigeria is like going to his grave. The opportunity that Kenya provides Nigeria could never grant him.
This Chinedu guy must be one of the most stupid guy in the all world for insulting the hand that fed him for the past 20 years. Chinedu has been involved in drug trafficking and the governments efforts to deport him were long overdue due to abusing the court process. Chinedu was facing a number of criminal cases and was in April arrested in his house with 10 grammes of heroin that he is believed to have either been using or intended to traffic.

The arrest followed an operation carried out in the city centre in which two men including a Nigerian national were nabbed for trafficking heroin.

The men were identified as Nelson Namunyu Mwangi who was found with 268 grams of heroin and Nigerian national Adebiyi Oluwatosin Fatai who had 20 grammes of the drugs.

They were arrested outside a popular club with the narcotics. Police say the two have been behind several incidents of drug trafficking in the city and they were expected in court again on Monday for mention of their case.

Cases of narcotics consumption are on the rise in the city and police are grappling with the situation.
I won't deny there are bad Nigerians but don't come here hypocritically lying that your Country is full of virtue alone. Is it not the same Nation where a shameless female high court judge ordered a British woman to be arrested and detained in prison so she could take over her business?

This evil judge fully succeeded as well backed by your highly corrupt and amoral judiciary complemented by your police force. That, in itself, speaks volumes for the sort of thing that goes on in your Country so spare me the sanctimonious talk portraying Nigerians as the ones always in the wrong while pretending you guys are all paragons of virtue.

991: @ the bold
exactly what i have in mind. I've been to Nairobi Kenya around 2007 or so, Nigerians are known for their flamboyant life style, driving expensive cars, luring women with cash, spending money in clubs & beer parlors to an extent that the natives wonder where and how they(nigerians) make the money they spend.
Look, I am not defending this guy merely because we are both Nigerians but you guys need to experience the crude and xenophobic nature of some Africans to understand that they can indeed scheme against you as this man alleges below. I have experienced it too and it is one of the most dehumanising experience I would not want to wish on anyone.

The issue about my wrongful deportation started some years ago when I had a misunderstanding with my ex-wife and later separated. It was over infidelity on the part of my wife. She was having extra-marital affair with a popular Kenyan politician at my back. And when I found out, I divorced her, after which she connived with the man and started fighting over my property that is worth over $5 million. So, in 2008, they wanted to deport me through illegal means, but the Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya at that time, Ambassador Nwigwe, intervened and stopped them. He countered whatever gimmick they introduced to deport me. Since then, they have been putting me and many other Nigerians through series of traumatic experiences.

gbanikiti: That means it's not really targeted at only Nigerians, but all the same, Federal Government should act fast to curb the situation. Nigerians in South Africa are suffering, now Kenya? smh
Not it is not but the difference is intent. Against others, they are mainly just predatory and not malicious. Against Nigerians, they are malicious, xenophobic and cruel. I remember the killers of Lucky Dube, the South African raggae Star, saying to a judge that they shot him dead because they thought he was Nigerian!!!

As for the Government, forget them. There is no cohesive or even semi-robust efforts to protect Nigerians maltreated abroad. It is when Senators are harassed in Nigeria that our Politicians will flex muscle. We are on our own and I very much identify with this guy.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Deportee From Kenya Narrates Ordeal by Gbawe:
gbanikiti: O ga o! Federal Government seem to care less. NO one is saying anything. Our legislators are busy doing irrelevant things. Why should Nigerians be treated as slaves in foreign countries yet foreigners are treated as kings in Nigeria? hmm...
Kenyans eff with everyone like that and this is why I know this guy is telling the truth. I am mad at his plight because, as someone also involved in business outside my home countries of Nigeria and the UK, I can relate to what he is going through. The crudeness in some African Countries, even those we assume sophisticated, is such that they can scheme to take what you have built and sunk your money into without any qualms at all. They know that nobody will come to your aid and they act secure in the knowledge they will get away with whatever they do to you.

This same thing happened to a white British woman who was married to a Kenyan. She built a thriving Bar/club business only to find herself arrested and jailed on bogus charges. When her husband attempted to bail her the whole judicial system conspired to keep this woman behind bars under horrid conditions. The reason? A High Court judge wanted her Bar/club business for herself !!! She simply kept the British woman in jail till she completed a take-over of the business. Totally immoral and wicked. This British woman suffered so much in Kenya one would break down and weep for her. In the end she eventually gained her freedom and she immediately went back to the UK with her Kenyan husband and daughter.

991: Lesson to learn.
1. always come home and invest
2. away wife na try-ur-luck
3. bad things happen to good people everywhere
4.
The man did nothing wrong investing away from home. What he did not prepare for that most Nigerians can simply not appreciate, till they experience it, is the caveman crudeness and xenophobia of other Africans. What he said about Kenyan elite planning to take over is very true.

Americans invest throughout the world and you cannot trample on an American like this. This man mainly falls victim to the reality of how no one has the back of a Nigerian when bad and unfair things happen to him abroad.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Deportee From Kenya Narrates Ordeal by Gbawe: 6:30pm On Jun 09, 2013
This man is telling the truth in my opinion and what he said, reproduced below, is totally correct 100%. Horrid thing to happen to him and others but episodes like this show how worthless and wretched Nigeria is. Why is there no diplomatic outcry over this from authorised Nigerian representative in Kenya?

And the plan of the Kenyan elite is to take over everything. You can verify all I am telling you.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Distabilisation Plot Seemed On Course by Gbawe: 4:47pm On Jun 09, 2013
The break-up of Nigeria will achieve nothing because our major problems are fairly straightforward and the sort that merely requires ordinary Nigerians themselves to recognise their own powers and be more evolved, more involved and gain more political sophistication so as to enforce the change they want. Deploying a 'sledgehammer approach' to kill a fly just shows how we Africans are incapable of honest introspection that will enable us to confront our own deficiencies that is failing us more than anything else. Accentuating ethnic, cultural and religious differences are just ways for a relatively underdeveloped people to conveniently shift blame away from themselves.

I make bold to say that Nigerians would have a wonderful country today, working for the majority, if we had the sophistication to match how we outnumber our most powerful and influential leaders by a millions to one. There would be no concession we would be unable to force from leaders if we fully understand how to utilise the concept of "Amandla Awetu" i.e people power .

What Nigeria needs is a truly federal structure placing real power at the door of States and regions. It is Nigerians who must be focused and visionary enough to agitate for this. If we cannot do so now we will similarly lack the ability to do so under new oppressors in any Nation we find ourselves in after separation. The docility and disinclination to hold leaders to account will not disappear and naturally this will be problematic wherever we go because our oppressive leaders will not suddenly disappear. They will follow us to be problems in a new nation. They may even be more oppressive without the federal might of Nigeria checking them.

Evolution, high quality education and optimal human development are the key because they will create citizens who will always be able to stand up to leaders and secure the Country they want. Running from pillar to post will solve nothing. Those who are visionary and can see beyond today, tomorrow and even 30 years ahead will know that planning properly to make those things work well together is the best solution for Nigeria. In the meantime, the challenge today is to keep supporting leaders who offer a better deal. Doing so automatically brings greater delivery of solutions and helps to move evolution, education and optimal human development in the right direction.

VillageBoi: Thank you Gbawe. Yes I did go for a certain DOF with each pic, glad you like them. I have a 7D and 60D (love the flipout screen of the 60D)... but I want a tiny pocket camera too. The funny thing is I only take pics for fun really; it's not that much of an interest... ok I get paid for all sorts of photoshoots even though I'm totally amateur but my main interest really is filmmaking.

I don't want to derail this photo thread so if you right click on my name you can find 'topics' I've started with some short films of mine. Teehee... I'm a wannabe film director lol.
Then consider a sony nex C3 with a small prime lens eg the 16mm. Probably the best balance of small size, value and excellent picture quality you can get out there currently. My wife has that and I use it sometimes. Very good small camera but you have to get a small prime lens because the kit lens it ships with unbalances the body in use and takes getting used to for effective handling. Unnecessary hassle when you consider that some prime lens are way better than the standard kit lens. Personally, I am set on the Samsung nx300 (with the 30mm prime lens addition ) as my street/mobility snapper but I concede the Sony Nex c3 is smaller while still being capable of very good results albeit with more effort than the Samsung.

You're right about the flip-out screen of the 60D. Great feature but becoming standard now with any fairly serious entry-level dslr. Interesting you are a budding film maker. You can't go wrong with Canon in that regard. I'll check out your short films. Wishing you the best with your endeavors. Having a keen interest in something is always a great start because it means you go further where others lose focus, flounder or turn back.

Some nice pics. Great depth of field in some of the pictures. Did you adjust for it? What Camera is your 'poison'? I am quite a keen amateur photographer and also need good shots in a professional capacity. Currently have a Samsung NX20 and Canon 60D but I plan to get the new Samsung nx300. Best 'street' photography tool in my opinion. Outstanding autofocus with great results and colour depth.
PoliticsIs Osun Truly At The Onset Of A Revolution? by Gbawe(op): 11:25am On Jun 09, 2013

Is Osun truly at the onset of a revolution?

JUNE 9, 2013 BY TUNDE FAGBENLE 4 COMMENTS

Tunde Fagbenle

There’s been a flurry of activity in the State of Osun (you call a person or place how it chooses to be called, jo) in the last few weeks to invite the attention of Nigerians everywhere and raise the curiosity of many a serious thinker – what is all these about? Is there much substance to it or is it more of noise and make-belief?

It started with Oyes-TECH, itself an offshoot of O-YES (the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme which reportedly employed 20,000 youths in the take-off of its rolling scheme at the onset of the administration), as one of the many O-This and O-That by which the state continues to brand its sundry development programmes, quickly appropriating the ‘O’ such that any other state with first letter O has to figure something else with which to distinguish itself or its programmes.

I happened to be in Osogbo to tend to my farm that day in early May and was opportuned to witness the graduation (“Freedom” in our traditional artisans’ parlance) of the Oyes-Tech participants. It was an impressive event at the open field around the government house overlooking the high street from which curious passersby could catch a glimpse.

The political fanfare of it aside, I was truly touched by the sight of fresh graduands, young male and female, clearly impromptu stating their experiences during the training programme that imbued them with broad understanding of the theoretical framework in ICT and the skills to engage in repairs, servicing, maintenance and assembling of mobile phones, computers, etc.

The crash-programme aimed at training 20,000 youths was run in conjunction with a technical partner, RLG-Communications, that set up some ten training centres spread all over the state as part of the government’s broader “state industrialisation and citizenry empowerment” agenda – the “teach a man how to fish” principle.

There’s the O-REAP (for Osun Rural Enterprise & Agric Programme that aims to turn the state into the food basket for the region if not the country), the O-CLEAN (for environment hygiene and cleanliness) and a number of other ‘O’ programmes all over the place, simultaneous and bewildering. Are these fancy ideas or are they well grounded? Are they sustainable? These are valid questions to engage the mind more from genuine fear and sincere hope than from arrant pessimism or sheer negativity of idle naysayers.

But the real story, the mother of all, is this one about the state’s recently launched “Tablet of Knowledge,” a technological contraption specially designed for secondary school pupils of the State of Osun. Typically of Ogbeni’s fierce advocacy for resurgence and promotion of Yoruba culture, religion and language, the tablet is christened OpónÌmò.

Word about it has been about in the last month or so but I was not enthused. I was filled with reservation, even apprehension about it. Why this? Why now? What cost? How meaningful? How sustainable? Where is the precedent? What result? And a million other queries concentrated my mind. I am of the old school, and that may partly accounts for my reservation, but I’m far better than a mate of mine (name withheld!) who is still stuck with his typewriter and remains grumpy, even resistant, to the advent of computers.

I began to put phone calls around the globe to those whose opinion I respect. “What is this Ogbeni’s OpónÌmò about?” I asked. No one seemed able to argue well for it. Everyone was going to make a check and get back to me. Has this man been railroaded into it by some smooth-talking Nigerian-Americans eager to do business and prey on Ogbeni’s passion for education and eagerness for trail-blazing?

But I am getting to be a convert to the futuristic possibilities of the OpónÌmò. I have taken time to read some available literature on it, including its own dedicated website: http://www.opon-imo.com, and comparative tendencies in other countries. But it started with unblocking my prejudice and reminding myself that all new and great ideas require vision and courage to pursue them to fruition.

There is no gainsaying the fact that education is the bedrock of development and electronic technology is the new age in education. OpónÌmò is seen as the learning tool that could revolutionise learning in developing states around the world. It is a stand alone e-learning tablet to be distributed free of charge to senior secondary school pupils and their teachers in Osun hoping it will radically transform the state into the leading educated state in Nigeria in the immediate and Africa’s Japan in the not too distant future.
The Android 4.0 technology is preloaded with learning materials consisting of 56 E-books on 17 core subjects, wide-ranging video and audio tutorials, some 10 years past question papers and Mock Exam tests for WASSCE, brain-developing games, etc.

From research, which the website also highlights, the tablet technology is being embraced by a number of countries including the US, the UK, Thailand, Turkey, etc. Thailand, for example last year, distributed 850,000 to Thai students and teachers out of its planned 1.7 million tablets in its “One Tablet Per Child” scheme. Turkey too is aiming to bring as many as 10.6 million tablets to local schoolchildren as part of its ‘Fatih’ project, says a report, with the proviso by the government that “The production of tablets should be in Turkey and the producer company should establish a research and development centre within the borders of Turkey.”

The State of Osun is said to be having the tablet assembly factory in Osogbo with nine support centres (one per federal constituency) to ensure development of local capacity and gainful employment that, again, the OYES-TECH keys into.

To be sure, in all the other countries cited, the tablet is seen only in complementarity with traditional books and not in displacement. But there is a building consensus that the technology is the future trend, with its cost-saving element countervailing budget constraints in education. As Apple puts it: “Budget constraints force schools to use the same books year after year, long after the content is out of date. But with textbooks on ipad (tablet) students can get a brand-new version each year — for a fraction of the price of a paper book.”

I still have my worries about OpónÌmò although its website tries to allay most of them. Its success will depend on all of us – pupils, teachers, parents – setting aside our objections, reservations, or antagonism – to embrace it,first and foremost by developing a sense of collective ownership such that any careless handling by any pupil would be rebuked and forbidden.

The maverick governor of the state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, is clearly in a hurry to move the state forward, not only ahead of its peers but thrust it sufficiently to catch up with the rest of the developed world. But I cannot in all honesty charge the governor with “too much haste” having myself long posited that there cannot be anything like “too much hurry” in the repair of the mess we are in this country.

Something tells me we are at the onset of a revolutionary development in Osun. O yes, I hope we are.

Do you and the discredited liar Anonimi think this is how crudely non-transparent State financing is to the jocular extent a Governor can take a 50 billion loan and then glibly deny such? If Oyo took loans, why should Ajimobi deny that? huh huh huh Is taking a loan a crime or does common sense not inform you that, very obviously, Anonimi is doing you up the azz with his ludicrous lies ?

This Anonimi chap is now known as a very malicious liar and nuisance on this forum regularly exposed for his devilish and slithering antics.

Oyo to float N30bn bond to finance budget, says commissioner
Premium Times
Published: May 1,2013

The Oyo State Government will need loans to finance its 2013 budget.
The Oyo State Government is to float a N30 billion bond for the implementation of the 2013 budget, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaniyi Olarinde, said on Tuesday.
Mr. Olarinde gave the information during a breakdown of the budget in Ibadan.
He said that the 2012 budget could not achieve more than 70 per cent performance because the government could not obtain a N50 billion bond expected to form part of the estimate.

Mr. Olarinde also said the state government would require additional N2.9 billion external loan and N4 billion internal loan to finance the budget.
The state House of Assembly had on March 19 approved the budget with more than N5 billion addition to the N152.15 billion presented to it by Governor Abiola Ajimobi in January.
The commissioner said that the budget of N159. 63 billion was made up of N111. 05 billion recurrent vote and N48. 58 billion capital expenditure.
He said N49.3 billion or 15 per cent allocated to the Ministry of Education was the highest, while the Office of the Governor got N12.9 billion or 8.14 per cent.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has N10.6 billion or 6.66 per cent of the budget, the commissioner said.
He, however, expressed disappointment that the allocation from the Federation Account still formed 31 per cent of the state budget.
He said the non-payment of taxes by the citizens was negatively affecting Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state.
Mr. Olarinde said that the government had spread its tax net to the area of property tax to beef up the IGR.
He urged all eligible tax payers, including corporate organisations, to cooperate with the government by paying their taxes to accelerate development.

rodeo0070: Dafua is going on here? Who them be? Where dem dey?
I don't care if a governor is from "ACN,PDP, ICAN,PHCN or what-have-you as long as he/she is performing, and this Gomina don impress me and the good people of Oyo state. If previous administrations had been on their toes doing the right thing, things would have been much more different.
I score this present administration 69.1%. Dm do well...
That is the best attitude to have. The best thing would be for development to be uniform throughout Nigeria.

Egba girl: Interpreted as: proper management of funds is evident.
Those criticizing him should chill out. He did not out rightly state that he is anti-loans. He just said that they have done so much from properly utilizing and managing funds. When the government is ready to doors than their budget can afford, I'm sure they will look into it.

A lot of unnecessary noise. Biko, calm down
Indeed. The man has given a periodic assessment of his leadership to highlight good fiscal management. Nothing at all to make a big deal of. In fact citizens of the State should be fairly excited because of what he has done so far to good acclaim. Distributing 320 tractors for agriculture is one laudable example of spending well. Folks in the State can certainly be optimistic as regards funding for large-scale transformational projects.

Atiku acknowledges transformation of Ibadan, hails Ajimobi’s urban renewal programme
Posted in Press/News on March 15, 2013

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday openly acknowledged the transformation of Ibadan from its former rural-urban setting to a modern state capital, commending the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, for the urban renewal programme of his administration.

Alhaji Abubakar, who spoke during a courtesy call on the governor in his office in Ibadan, said he had lived in the state capital for some time and knew what the ancient city used to be which had earned it the stigma of being the dirtiest city in Nigeria.

He, however, said that he was impressed with the new-look which Ibadan was wearing, saying “I have seen a lot of changes, with cleaner streets and green environment’’.
The former Vice President also commended the governor for the distribution of 320 tractors to local government councils, a feat which he said would boost agriculture and ensure food security in the state.

“Honestly, I must commend you for the distribution of 320 tractors to local government councils. This is colossal. Agriculture is no doubt the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy. So by doing this, you have succeeded in putting people to work and this, I am sure, will boost agriculture and ensure food security,’’ he said.

Alhaji Abubakar also described the governor as a member of his political family, stressing that they had both come a long way and shared some things in common. In his remarks, Governor Ajimobi said that aside nipping in the bud the security challenges which he faced on assumption of office, his administration had also succeeded in lifting Oyo from its old rural setting to a modern state and consequently restoring its lost pace setting status.

He described the former Vice President as a man of impeccable character, with simple disposition, urging him not to relent in his efforts at realizing his political ambition, notwithstanding the challenges he had been facing.

ewet: He will need to borrow for capital project financing at some point as no govt can do much by justdepending on fed allocation and IGR which is obviously to meager to have any impact. But i will like to trust that it will be done with due diligence fiscal responsibility.
Indeed. The man is not saying he will not borrow in future. Merely giving an update and revealing he has not borrowed so far. Not bad since one can expect the same fiscal responsibility will be applied to judiciously utilise any borrowings in future.

aasog1: Despite "liking" your comment, I disagree with your opinion about Lagos having way more challenges than the other ACN states. Heres my example,

Ogun State: 21 LG's Lagos State: 25 LGs
Lagos GDP which $90 billion, compared with Ogun state $10 Billion
Lagos Size is 9,999 Km in size, while Ogun state is 16,972 Km
And with the current population of people jaunting into Ogun State, I'd say in 7 more years, the population of both state would be fairly balanced. And coupled with the incredible debts left by the former PDP governor who did ABSOLUTELY nothing in this state, and with a poor IGR, I dont think think BRF would have accomplished the kind of feat he'd if given the post of a governor in Ogun State. Dont get me wrong, BRF is a wonderful governor, but I only believe Fashola has only created a "template of development" for the other ACN governors who are willing to copy.
The large population of Lagos introduces problems of scale (more houses and more healthcare provisions needed for example) and infrastructural challenges to levels other SW States will not face. Simplistically, as one example, Lagos needs more far more potable water for its massive populace than other States. Meeting that large demand will be more challenging than Ogun trying to achieve same. Resultantly, Ogun may meet it's target of providing potable water for the majority of its citizen quicker and easier than Lagos can.

Impressive fiscal management and plans. No surprise though given the pedigree of Ajimobi. Personally, I think the current crop of ACN Governors have the potentials to achive more than Fashola has. This will not be because they are better administrators but due to the fact that they have far less challenges to deal with than the Lagos governors.

Laudably, the ACN has recognised that proactively securing the funds for State development without depending on federal allocation alone will move things along much quicker.

vizboy: not only that. The interception isnt at 90 degree. If it were to be at 90 degree i would have gone for the red car but in these case it isnt
It does not matter whether it is 90 degrees or not. Road design, especially related to priority of access, does not have to be angle-specific. If the yellow car has no dedicated filter lane it has priority to move into, then it must slow down for the red car which , from all indications, is travelling on a straight and unimpeded lane. You can see from the original diagram that the yellow car is not moving into a dedicated filter lane. Rather, it is moving into the lane the red car, from all information available to us, has priority to use.
