k2039: I have a feeling the Oronasye and Oti scene were staged
Absolutely. There is not an iota doubt about this. Why would those versed in decorum disgrace the office of the Presidency with this amateurish public display that is totally out of place and defiant of protocol ? Why not present any objection to Ribadu's report to the President in private? Also, why is it Oronsaye , an absentee when the committee carried out its work, who is most vocal and confrontationally bullish?

There is also the consideration of conflicts of interest with allegations of Oransaye et al being compromised by later involvement with those under investigation. All in all, we have seen this unconscionable and thoughtlessly diversionary antics too many times from the Jonathan Government.
PoliticsRibadu Report: Oronsaye Foul Cry, An International Embarrassment —groups by Gbawe(op): 11:02am On Nov 04, 2012
I totally agree that it is indeed an international embarrassment. Choreographed antics such as that displayed publicly in front of the Presidency, over the Ribadu report, disgraces Nigeria as an aberration where lack of decorum and dearth of morality is king.

The Otedola-style 'James Bond' espionage + 419 shenanigans has only just begun. I expect the agents of this ultra-corrupt Government to now fully turn their efforts towards discrediting Ribadu. It is just sad that it is Nigeria's image suffering badly from these unbelievably shameless displays, plots and subterfuge.

Ribadu report: Oronsaye foul cry, an embarrassment —Groups

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu

Opposition parties and civil society groups have described the uproar over the report by the Nuhu Ribadu-led Petroleum Revenue Special Task force as an “international embarrassment.

They said it was an indication that the probe was a populist move by the Federal Government.

Notwithstanding the presence of President Goodluck Jonathan at the presentation of the report on Friday, two members of the committee – Mr. Stephen Oronsaye and Mr. Ben Oti – had openly disagreed with Ribadu over the process that produced the report and its credibility.

Oronsaye, who is the deputy chairman of the committee, alleged that the process leading to the production of the report was flawed and did not contain the views of all the members.

The All Nigeria Peoples Party, the Congress for Progressive Change, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders and Campaign for Democracy took turns on Saturday to lambast Oronsaye.

The Executive Chairman, CACOL, Mr. Debo Adeniran, advised Jonathan not to take Oronsaye arguments seriously. He accused the antagonists of the report of having ulterior motives.

He said, “It is an indication that all is not well with Nigeria. A critical look at the situation shows that some forces did not want the report to see the light of the day. The embarrassment the massive corruption in the sector forced Presidency to use Ribadu’s name to launder its image.

“If Oronsaye claims he did not sit with the committee, his name should not be written on the report. The tragi-comedy is a manifestation of the lopsidedness of our polity. It is an international embarrassment.

“If Jonathan is considering a soft landing by asking Oronsaye to present his own report, that will not be acceptable.”

Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary, ANPP, Mr. Emma Eneukwu, said it was expected that those indicted by the report would kick and try to devise a cover-up. He expressed his pessimism about the political will to implement the report.

He said, “If Ribadu presents a credible report, friends of the system,” will query its credibility.

“Almost all of those indicted have skeletons in their cupboard. Antagonists are just rising up to rubbish the report. We have advanced in this country and we know what is happening. If the President wants to fight corruption – which I know he does not, going by the fate of similar reports – he should work with the report.”

The President, Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, said Nigerians would not relent in their fight against corrupt officials until the reports from probes into the petroleum sector were fully implemented.

She said, “The scenario is not surprising, as people have motives for everything they do. The track record of Ribadu will convince anyone that the report is credible. It only shows the type of game we are playing, in terms of political will to implement probe reports.

“My advice is that once more, the government should restore the confidence of the people. We are only subsidising corruption by failing to nail it. The implementation of the report must be very fast in prosecuting those indicted.”

Where are the fertilizers?

The whole talk about the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration will be blowing hot air if the nation cannot feed itself substantially from locally produced foods. This is particularly true because a large percentage of the food items of different classifications, which Nigerians consume at home, are imported from other countries, some of which are less endowed.

The direct foreign exchange loss is mind-blowing. Nations are respected in the international arena based on the potency of their economic strength and not their size or bogus claim to being a giant. And no nation can pride itself as viable when the majority of her people are hungry and unemployed. Many Nigerians are nearly eating from the waste bin, to put it mildly.

When patriots call on government to deliver good leadership and respect the rule of law, it is so that we can lay the foundation for a solid nation based on economic prosperity and political stability, and prepare for the rainy day. In Nigeria today, the cloud is just gathering before the rain and the signs are obvious that if the heavy rain comes, thousands will die of starvation. Agriculture, which once built and sustained the growth of the nation in the 1950s and 1960s has been so thoroughly neglected that it is now seen as a past time to keep a few retirees and peasant farmers busy. At a time when Nigeria should be building capacity in agriculture, our leaders are behaving like easy oil wealth will last forever.

The clock is ticking and many are wondering what would happen if the oil suddenly dries up today. Governments at all levels have intentionally refused to allocate resources towards supporting agriculture through massive provision of inputs, agricultural research and marketing outlets in Nigeria. The result is that agricultural policy direction by government has been ineffectual and watery. Unless Nigeria pursues a deliberate policy of agricultural revolution to back up and boost the efforts of peasant farmers, Nigerians will continue to live on borrowed food. Food crisis is real in Nigeria as indeed in many African countries. The ghosts of Operation Feed the Nation and Shehu Shagari’s Green Revolution have deserted the nation.

Lack of vision on the part of national policy makers has starved the agricultural sector of resources for decades. Like the power sector in Nigeria, the agricultural sector has continued to shrink, making African countries net importers of food, despite agriculture employing the majority of the population. According to Kofi Annan, the need to reinvest in agriculture to reverse this trend has become evident. This reinvestment holds a number of opportunities, not only for increased food security and the improvement of livelihoods, but also for economic growth and private sector development.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akinwumi Ayo Adesina, has been talking righteously about the feats achieved by his ministry in the agricultural sector through efficient electronic distribution of fertilizers. [b]Listening to him leaves one with an impression that Nigeria will get it right in the agricultural sector, but unfortunately, Mr Minister is still in the dreamland. Nigeria is yet to meet 30% of her national fertilizer needs. The fertilizers are still in the hands of the cartel that know the terrain well. Still talking about fertilizer, Rivers State is still miles away. Enquiries at the Ministry of Agriculture/ADP office in Rumuodomaya in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area showed that the fertilizers imported by the state government have been sold at subsidised rates to a few businessmen who came from the northern part of the country.

Trailer loads of fertilizer left the state and rendered the farmers in Rivers State hopeless and helpless. A lot of farmers from the state now head to nearby Imo State to buy fertilizers at exorbitant costs from private importers. As a commercial farmer, I know that it will be totally impossible for the peasant farmers to afford the luxury of fertilizers in their farming programmes. I have further cross-checked and it is obvious that the Federal Government’s fertilizers are not available in Port Harcourt. I just pray this is not the same story down the Niger. The reason is simple.

The nation has scanty regard for the agricultural sector because free oil wealth has beclouded the vision of our national reality. Why would any contemporary Nigeria leadership bother about agriculture, tilling the soil, planting, weeding, harvesting and storing when there are smoother valves? Simply put, the money from oil is enough to play the game. After all, every Nigerian leader had always seen the oil sector as a private estate. With a weak National Assembly and beleaguered institutions to check fraud and executive excesses, neglect of the agricultural and other critical revenue sectors is a matter of course.

At the formal launch of a natural cocoa product called Frangada, produced by a private company, Multi-Trex Integrated Foods Plc, in Warewa, Ogun State, recently, Dr. Adesina decried lack of attention given to agriculture by Nigerians, especially the youths, stressing that Nigeria has no reason to import any agricultural produce considering the abundant mineral and human resources in the country. “There was a time Nigeria had the largest market in cocoa production, but today, other countries have taken over. Ghan, today produces one million metric tonnes of cocoa, Ivory Coast produces 1.2 million, Nigeria is at 250,000 metric tonnes in cocoa production.”

However, this should not be so, he said. Dr Adesina spoke with pains in his heart as he recalled the good old days when cocoa held sway. All these sound like fairy tales and mere rhetoric because the three tiers of government in Nigeria want agriculture relegated. There were the groundnut pyramids in the northern part of Nigeria, cocoa in the west and palm oil and allied products in the east.

The glorious days are gone and there is no saviour in sight. In an era tormented by corruption, maladministration, raging flood, declining productivity, weak currency engineered by a consuming rather than a productive economic habit, Nigeria and Nigerians can only be poorer. My experience in public life tells me that leadership does not need the permission of law to do right in some cases, and it cannot do wrong when it acts in the best interest of the people. If a fraction of all the funds abused and stolen by government officials at all levels are channeled into agriculture, Nigeria will easily reclaim her lost agricultural prowess. The opportunity is not lost, but lessons must be learnt from the mistakes of the past.

Nigeria and many other African countries are under an international obligation to allocate 10% of their annual budget to the agricultural sector, but this is observed more in breach. Over the past two decades, there was a gradual decrease in the amount of resources allocated to agriculture from government budgets. Between 2005 and 2009, only 10 African countries allocated over 10% of government budget to agriculture. In addition, 18 countries allocated less than 5% over the same period.

But the highest Nigeria has done is 3%. With an employment profile of 70%, the nation needs to save the agricultural sector through large scale direct participation, allocation of more funds and procurement of inputs for farmers as a national policy.

PoliticsRe: Ribadu, Orosanye Argue Before Jonathan by Gbawe: 10:00am On Nov 04, 2012
take dat: Don't be angry with GEJ. Orosanye acted in that manner in connivance with GEJ and Diezani. If Orosanye felt left out and that due process wasn't followed he would have voiced out his dissent to the President and in the media earlier before friday or would have waited till after the submission of the report. He practically chose to throw decorum to the dogs being aware that the press was present at the presentation.
What is so special about Orosanye that he will be appointed on the Board of NNPC while still on the Board of CBN? Who's interest is Orosanye serving? GEJ's.
Indeed. GEJ is only being true to type and those who know and accept his nature cannot be angry with him. Also, there is no "disrespect" going on at all. Just a cynically orchestrated drama involving corruption 'fighting back'. Ribadu himself coined that saying that is now an adage in our National life. I.e "when you fight corruption, corruption fights back".

This is why , to preempt the damage corruption does when it fights back, Reuters got the 'leaked' report. GEJ, as some of us have always insisted, is nothing but an ultra-corrupt opportunist. "Show me your friends and I show you your character". Did Nigerians note this powerful consideration when GEJ was being 'endorsed' by the most corrupt individuals in Nigeria during the election? Did some of us not argue that a President who frolicked so openly and so comfortably with the most corrupt Nigerians and AGIPs would be DOA (dead on arrival) after he won the election?

Many Nigerians are just way too emotional plus lack political sophistication and the ability to think critically. We will continue to suffer , for a long time, because of those deficiencies. Even now, some are still here trying to spin this pathetic show of shame in favour of one of the most shamelessly corrupt Government, with a penchant for engaging in ludicrously unbelievable shenanigans, Nigeria has known in recent memory. "Fresh air" ojare.

lagerwhenindoubt: I am a bit confused here especially the reaction of the President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria. Jonathan Goodluck Ebele.
He has not attempted to address the concerns presented by both Steve and Ribadu regarding the readiness of the Committee to submit an incomplete report (as stated by Steve) nor has he appreciated the opportunity Ribadu has offered him to truly show what sort of President he is. If it were OBJ he would have thoroughly lambasted Oti and Steve for deeming their input fit for consideration having not participated in critical deliberations throughout the period the report was being compiled.

Omo na wa for this GEJ, is this what we will be voting for come 2015? . dear GOD send one sandy this way abeg. grin
My guy, is this not what some of us are saying about the President? I.e his indifferent attitude that can only stem from insincerity? Do we not have many, many examples of how sincere leaders rise above gradualism and the shackles of the status quo to bravely support the birth of real reform that puts nations on the path of greatness? Instead GEJ 'bottles' it every single time he is placed in a position where the only options are to confront others bravely, for the benefit of Nigeria, or capitulate to his evil 'sponsors' and AGIP backers/godfathers who want Nigeria to remain an aberration profiting a small minority.

Ribadu said: He (Oronsaye) was not at
the inauguration and he never
participated in the deliberations of the
committee. The only time he came was
when we wanted to start deliberations
on recovery and he came on behalf of
one company, Addax Petroleum, which

"That was the only time he came. In
fact, he scuttled the payment of the

addition to being a board member of
CBN."

My brother, look at how our ultra-corrupt AGF and Aondoakaa on steroids (Adoke Bello) is deployed and it is obvious what the Government is about. Let us not even begin to delve into the many antics of this government that, without any doubt, indicate a compromised mien and an unwillingness to tackle graft.

It will be interesting to see what is made of this report. Ribadu has done what was asked of him even if others were not sincere to begin with. How many recommendations from numerous committees, requiring tough and fundamentally reforming actions, has the GEJ Government implemented?

What was the reward for the Presidential advisory committee that submitted a report directing GEJ to cut profligacy, waste and bloated Governance? GEJ promptly disbanded said committee , after their public show of 'intransigence', to announce glibly and callously that "leaner government not possible" !!!! Let us wait and see if a Leopard changes it spot or if a Stone can produce water.

Jarus: My brother, that is the tragedy of my generation. They didn't witness the war, they didn't read about it, yet they are the ones at the forefront of arguments here. Anybody who never knew General Shuwa before this news doesn't deserve to contribute to the talk, especially as it relates to civil war. I can see folks here asking 'who is Shuwa?' And after being answered, being the one to throw insults. The level of ignorance in display on Nairaland here is very worrisome. That is why some of us have retreated to our mere watchers in topics relating to Nigeria's political history.
Indeed. Even before entering this thread, I knew why news of the death of a Major General ,ordinarily uninteresting to most, would be on page 5.

I knew the thread would be 'of interest' because of the usual ethnic vituperation and vapid obsession over a war probably no one here took part in yet are forever keen to pass judgement over.

RIP to Mohammed Shuwa and RIP to the worthless minds of most Nigerians as well. In its place, we can hope for the resurrection of minds that can aid Nigeria's development with a focus on how to improve things today instead of a malevolent obsession with holding on to a past that is very open to subjective and nuanced interpretations.

mrrock: @Billyonaire.
I told you he chosed Ribadu as a mark of authenticity. He is under presure to convince Nigerians that he is serious. I' am not doubting the findings. The findings may be ok but must have to be discredited in order to protect the cabals (those that funded their election and put them in power in the first place).
Absolutely. The process has to be tainted in some way to diminish its credibility - and the Otedola-style shenanigans has begun. Does it make sense to anyone that a Nollywood drama had to play out on the very day a formal presentation of the committees work was made to the President?

Nigerians need to begin thinking critically or we are doomed to be perpetual slaves of corruption and roguery. It is not rocket science. We keep seeing things that do not happen anywhere else in the world being the order of the day in Nigeria. Yet, we Nigerians make excuses to validate the senseless 419 antics of our leaders.
PoliticsRe: Disagreements As Ribadu Committee Submits Report by Gbawe: 10:52am On Nov 03, 2012
Is it not really simple enough from the history of the actors? Ribadu has never been known to be a team builder or a team leader. I think he believes it affect efficiency. Check his records, Ribadu arrests suspects even before investigations finishes. His methods has been historically unorthodox and make no mistake about it, he achieves results. His method shields him from the inefficiency of the beauracracy.
For Orosanye, anybody that knows him will know that he is one of the most principled, process based and fearless civil servant this country ever had. Take a look at his days at the Head of Service. He built majority of the service structure in civil service today, so he had always been a process person and will naturally argue with Ribadu's methods.
Actually, if you look at the committee, you will notice that core professionals were drawn from different fields for this assignment. Ribadu himself is a core professional, very technical too. When you have an all technical committee like this, it is always better to drive it with a man/woman with strong leadership skills. Ribadu has never had that.
To my mind, there is no contradiction here, Orosanya was being true to type, so is Ribadu. But i believe that Ribadu could have managed this team better while achieving his desired result. First rule in leadership is never allow your team to be fragmented.
And to Mr President, we all have a lot to learn from his crisis management. He managed the situation well, while allowing all to save face. He is a thorough team leader.
Now, Ribadu's report has been accepted. Orasanya's inputs can still be accomodated. The collection of these form the report of the committee. This will further expand the discussion points that will lead to concesus. Most importantly, their harmonized findings must be taken seriously and as Mr President said, ALL indicted must be brought to book, but more importantly, the system MUST be made to be more fool proof.
Why are you crafting this elaborate Nollywood drama around something that is very simple given the history of Nigeria and corruption? There is always a 'spoiler' thrown into the mix to taint and undermine processes while diverting attention from original target. Simple as that. It is the oldest trick in the book when corruption fights back and, for me, that is what is happening here.

It is the 419 we are famous for deployed at leadership level. I bet you provided similar talk over the disgraceful Otedola-Farouk entrapment spy saga that James Bond would have been proud of. The ultra-corrupt and highly unscrupulous AGIP (Otedola) now the champion of anti-corruption? Only in Nigeria !!!

You can say what you want, as entitled, but those who know the world beyond Nigeria will appreciate that our leaders have turned our Nation into a horrid joke where disgraceful acts of 419 is practiced at the highest level with total impunity and lack of shame or even an appreciation of what must not be done because it is totally unacceptable/unseen elsewhere. It is the day of making a formal presentation to the Presidency that this spat had to be played out publicly?

The question leads to other pertinent questions
1. Why are we so poor in researchin even on NL, that we regurgitate lots of questionable and dumb ascerssions and argue blindly and stu.pidly
2. Why have we been so lazy that we believe and perpertuate lies and falsehood before thinking thru it. A NLer on the earlier on that thread punctured the report with a simple analysis on the alleged travel frequency of Mrs. Ajimobi. That for the ascerssion to be true, Mrs. Ajimobi must have been travelling to London everyweekend at least- which is ridiculous, but many thoughtless NLers still went ahead with the jaundiced view of "there is an element of truth in every rumour"
3. Why do we get on unnecessary frenzy when with opportunity to pry into people's private lives and do damage.
Too many, motivated by one sectional agenda or the other, talk before they think. Despite being showed the obvious lack of credibility inherent in the patently ridiculous story, many still continued to behave like the ALUU lynch mob. Frankly, I am convinced most members of this forum deserve to be ignored.

Very simple. To folks like him, ACN = Yoruba. The perceived demise or weakening of the ACN = setback for Yorubas. This is why it is people like him always making inane comments about the ACN's so-called downfall. Go through the numerous threads to see those who over-celebrated the so-called arrest of Mrs. Ajimobi despite many sensible posters trying to show them that the story of her 'arrest' lacked logic and credibility. Also, go and see those who used the most scornful language against the woman yet remain unable to apologise and you will note why some talk "senselessly" as you observed.

My brother, it is a very personal thing for me. I see people attacking the rich and successful routinely and without a care for decency and fairness. As Nigerians, we should know better given how we are victims of negative stereotyping by other Africans. You have a nice car, nice house and dress well - all gained through hard work and talent. Yet fellow Africans , never bothered about developing themselves optimally so as to compete and thrive , are more comfortable excusing their own deficiencies by sneering at you and telling the world you are not to be respected because you gained everything through criminality, fraud etc.

Why can some not simply do some research to see that Ajimobi was a very talented technocrat ? The man showed exemplary solutions provision skills we all know is extremely well-rewarded in the Professional world. Yet, we see many now comfortable attacking him because his kids school in the UK. How many of us, given that our children are our most precious treasures, would not educate our kids privately in the best schools if we could afford it? What is better than giving your kids the best start in life if you can afford it?

Have you ever taken time to look at Governor Ajimobi's professional history? Can some of you , before you talk, ever make allowance for how there are very talented folks out there who are wealthy because of their ability? This simplistic take on life won't get many of you anywhere. Go and look at the man's Professional record to see he could always afford to educate his children in the UK and stop this nauseatingly unfair character assassination and witch hunt.

It is the sort of frustrated 'bad belle' mentality that got those poor boys lynched in ALUU by savages !!! 1. your simply twisting logic on it's head and also regurgitating some logic without putting it in proper perspective. You cannot not divorce government from business and investment. A responsible government takes initiative to drive/catalyze sectors that will positively impact on the people.
2. With all the lands in the country, how many private investors went into Agribusiness to sustain the present food gap.
3. Do you know that as far back in OBJ's day, the Chinese came here with a gaint ships for acelerated export of cassava, yet could hardly fill the ship on a single trip?(It is established that Nigeria is the largest producer of Cassava in the world, yet we are not producing up to 10% of the world demandhuh)
4. Do you know that in the last few months, certain cummulative factors have driven average food prices up by 200%?
5. Who told you Lagos state was going it alonehuh Lagos is noted to be the foremost driver of PPP even much more than the federal government.
6. Except we are lying to ourselves, you cannot divorce government from business. Even consulting firms like accenture had to rethink thier strategy few years back and started taking government contract.
7. The Minister of Agric, have been working with State governments that are serious in this area and these are some of the workings you're seeing.
8. For me, It is sheer intellectual laziness, to just jump into some warpped conclusions, without understanding the background and direction schemes like these are going. The Chinese, with there massive industrialization are one of the largest exporter of Apples, Fish, Buffalo milk for cheese etc. The Egyptians has 25% land, every other space is Nile and desert, yet they have much more food than us; not to talk of the Isreal, Zimbabwe, South Africa etc
Hope he listens. My assignment for him is to go and and study the ideas that drove the 'green revolution'. Ndu-chucks simply loves being contrarian for the sake of it alone. In is indeed intellectually lazy to continue insisting Government must not be involved in the business of agriculture especially in an era when the sector is virtually failed and incapable of delivering perhaps the most important need of man i.e food security.

Government must get involved, physically and financially, to resurrect a vital sector and encourage wider participation for the benefit of Nigeria. Simple as that !! I really don't know how idealism leads some to ignore logical efforts of government predicated on veritable models that have delivered success world wide. This is not an agro-economic drive predicated on the concept of adding to businesses government engages in. It is a serious attempt to ensure we begin producing more of what we eat.

With investors shying away and uptake not particularly voluntary, it is only an irresponsible Government that would fold it's arm and watch the Nation become entirely reliant on import to feed its people. I am feeling generous today and will even give Ndu-Chucks some 'research indicators' for his assignment. We are more or less where others were when their Government decided to get involved , one way or the other, to improve food security for their people and reduce over-reliance on import.

In 1961 India was on the brink of mass famine.[3] Borlaug was invited to India by the adviser to the Indian minister of agriculture M. S. Swaminathan. Despite bureaucratic hurdles imposed by India's grain monopolies, the Ford Foundation and Indian government collaborated to import wheat seed from CIMMYT. Punjab was selected by the Indian government to be the first site to try the new crops because of its reliable water supply and a history of agricultural success. India began its own Green Revolution program of plant breeding, irrigation development, and financing of agrochemicals.[4]
India soon adopted IR8 – a semi-dwarf rice variety developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) that could produce more grains of rice per plant when grown with certain fertilizers and irrigation. In 1968, Indian agronomist S.K. De Datta published his findings that IR8 rice yielded about 5 tons per hectare with no fertilizer, and almost 10 tons per hectare under optimal conditions. This was 10 times the yield of traditional rice.[5] IR8 was a success throughout Asia, and dubbed the "Miracle Rice". IR8 was also developed into Semi-dwarf IR36.

Wheat yields in developing countries, 1950 to 2004, kg/HA baseline 500. The steep rise in crop yields in the U.S. began in the 1940s. The percentage of growth was fastest in the early rapid growth stage. In developing countries maize yields are still rapidly rising.[6]
In the 1960s, rice yields in India were about two tons per hectare; by the mid-1990s, they had risen to six tons per hectare. In the 1970s, rice cost about $550 a ton; in 2001, it cost under $200 a ton.[7] India became one of the world's most successful rice producers, and is now a major rice exporter, shipping nearly 4.5 million tons in 2006.

God is watching us.
Ajimobi was a gifted technocrat who has always been successful. He is a talented and successful man who could always afford to educate his daughter privately in the UK. Give him his dues and move on. It is unfair to suggest his daughter's private schooling comes at the expense of anything else when the man has the right to use his income to give his children the best in life as the rest of us are allowed to do.

Look, this forum, because of its unique identity, naturally attracts the worst examples of individuals who hail from all Nigerian ethnic groups. If you want to come here and talk to other Nigerians productively then you will simply have to ignore certain treads and certain posters. As simple as that.

Remember that an anonymous chat website is automatically the most attractive destination for life's losers who wish to feel good about themselves via celebrating others with a connotation of ethnicity. This is a place where those who have no achievements of their own can attach themselves , ethnically, to the individual success of Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Seal Henry Olusegun Samuel, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Fela, Chuka Umunna, D-Banj, P-Square et al

How many Nairalanders, always bragging here about ethnic superiority, are as hardworking, talented, tolerant, successful and exemplary as the individuals they use to shore up their empty rhetoric of ethnic supremacy?

Does Coscharis not employ Yoruba folks? Does Globacom not utilize many bright Igbos to keep the business group dominant and successful? Does Dangote shun human talent on account of ethnicity ?

Start letting the losers here define your thinking and you will be no better than the racist perpetually judging black folks because of the actions of a few.

Postulations of our Philosopher- President

His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a man with great quest for knowledge holds a Bachelor of Science … Master of Science … and Doctor of Philosophy … from University of Port Harcourt ,” so begins a profile of our president available online (http://www.onlinenigeria.com/links/LinksReadPrint.asp?blurb=640).

Jonathan “bagged” these degrees in biology, fisheries and zoology. Although he began his working life in the civil service, there really was only one place for him because he “always knew that he had a bond with the academia that he cannot dispute” (sic).

And so in 1983, he left “mainstream” civil service to teach biology at Rivers State College of Education. But a college of education proved unequal to his scholarly ambition, his desire “to equip himself firmly ahead of the foresighted challenges” (sic), hence his pursuit of doctoral studies.

By citing this online profile, I do not imply that it emanated from the President or that it was posted with his consent. Indeed, it appears to have been written by a fawning admirer in the manner of the pompous and shameful praise-singing that our men and women in high office cherish and encourage, if not actively solicit.

The unguarded zeal of the writer is evident in the embarrassing errors of grammar that seem to mock the goal of presenting his subject as a man of exemplary learning and academic achievements. Yet, the unintended result proves to be a good allegory for understanding the efforts of our President as the interpreter-in-chief of our troubled national life.

I will return to this point presently, but if I began with his valorisation as a man of great learning, it is not only because he is a doctor of philosophy but also because until his predecessor, Umaru Yar’Adua, Nigeria seemed cursed to be governed only by men of middling education; to put it mildly.

That Yar’Adua had not just a Bachelor’s but a Master’s as well endeared him to many, made them willing to overlook the scandal of the 2007 presidential election and give him the benefit of the doubt. One can safely assume that not a few quieted their grave concerns regarding the capability of Jonathan to be president by the wish to elect only the second head of state to have passed through the portals of a university.

To be clear, I do not consider university education a qualification for the office of president: in my view, the late Mokwugo Okoye and Anthony Enahoro, to name just two great minds, would shame many a Ph.D or pretender to the presidency. So then what?

That a president who happens to be a doctor of philosophy should, at the very least, prove himself worthy of the status — in learning, if not in leadership. But in all that Jonathan has said in public office, I have yet to find a thought or idea so well expressed or a social problem so clearly analysed as would be befitting of a former university don.

The problem, I admit, may be with me: I may not have looked widely or carefully enough or I may have failed to recognise intellectual rigour in his speeches, and I have wondered aloud before who writes his speeches. But let me tender evidence in my defence from Jonathan’s recent claim that the January anti-fuel subsidy protests were sponsored and manipulated by some unnamed people. In short, by his enemies.

It is not only worrisome that Jonathan denounced the people as fools easily misled to risk life and limb for a cup of water and a song, but also that this is the best argument he could advance in support of such utter contempt for his electorate.

During the demonstration in Lagos, he said, “people were given bottled water that people in my village don’t have access to. People were given expensive food that the ordinary people in Lagos cannot eat. So even going to eat free alone attracts people.

They go and hire the best musicians to come and play and the best comedian to come and entertain. Is that demonstration? Are you telling me that that is a demonstration from ordinary masses in Nigeria who want to communicate something to government? I believe that that protest in Lagos was manipulated by a class in Lagos and was not from the ordinary people.”

I could neither laugh nor cry when I read this, and not merely for the awful grammar. I could only wonder: after nine months of reflection, this is the conclusion of our philosopher-president regarding a crisis that rocked the country he claims to govern, a crisis that caused death and grievous bodily harm to many?

After the revelations of the House of Representatives committee that probed the oil subsidy swindle, and KPMG’s forensic report on NNPC’s process and procedure, both of which confirmed the popular view that the so-called subsidy was one enjoyed by the oil cartel and its enablers in the corridors of power, the President could so brazenly insult the people?

As a species of argument, one wouldn’t expect it of a sophomore! Which makes me wonder what the President’s aforementioned profiler must have meant by describing him as a “humane administrator, amazingly simple minded.”

Doesn’t the President know that he pronounced judgement against himself as he said those words? The people, he confesses, are so impoverished, so famished, that they would riot, do the devil’s work, for food! Evidently, irony is not something that our philosopher-president might understand.

Jonathan’s puzzling vilification of the people, says Wole Soyinka, is the result of “bad conscience.” As he rightly points out, Jonathan did not see manipulators when the same people took to the streets to insist that he be named acting president against the entrenched interests of those who sought to profit from Yar’Adua’s effective abdication of office due to terminal illness.

But I don’t think it is bad conscience alone that afflicts the President. It seems clear that Jonathan, Ph.D notwithstanding, suffers from bad social science as well. And that his expert knowledge of fishes and animals needs urgently to be supplemented by a serviceable knowledge of society and human behaviour.

what has this got to do with the Retardeen's numerous goofs? huh huh
My guy, you should now be used to the modus operandi , focused on personal attacks , of the GEJ apologists. When he made the "black domination" gaffe in T and T, they defended him blindly. When he stated "he did not give a damn", they pledged automatic support. When he made the gaffe about his corruption effort , later spun as "notorious facts" by his embarrassed team, he enjoyed blind backing. Condemned for senselessly stating that the fuel subsidy protest was sponsored, the supporters club still cheered.

Don't then be surprised they are here in all their insulting glory because it is pointed out that GEJ has no business mentioning Cameroon while in Liberia. It is not desirable in diplomacy and will surely cause offence as his host may feel he is distracted and inattentive.

My brother, even as there are too many crybabies here always taking things personally, the truth is that GEJ does not come across as refined, confident or particularly knowledgeable. His numerous gaffes are chided regularly by social commentators.

Who says President don't make mistakes? The problem is that our President routinely makes mistakes that makes him come across as unintelligent, uninformed, inattentive and lacking in sophistication.
PoliticsRe: GEJ Is At It Again Oooo...! by Gbawe:
onatisi: why does everyone keep calling gbawe an old man?i still dont get it .
Because Beaf, the intellectual midget and uber mischief-maker, started that nonsense. Bested intellectually, he had to resort to lame personal insults and lying about others as usual. The other fools saying 'old man' are just unthinking parrots , of even poorer intelligence than Beaf, who run their lives led blindly by others like unthinking lemmings.

Onatisi, I always put my money where my mouth is. You are in Ghana. I will be in Accra in November. Let us meet so you can tell all these pathetic fools, suffering from inferiority complex, if I am Methuselah or if they are all sad losers and bitter failed hacks who need to feel good disparaging others they don't measure up to in any way.

I tell the truth here. Perhaps because I am one of the few secure enough in himself to do so. Saying one has a wife, kids, mortgages and run businesses does not amount to being old. Otherwise the likes of Mark zuckerberg and David Beckham are "old men".

It is irresponsible and jobless losers who have not made much of their adult lives, like Beaf who is around my age, who run around pretending to be 'ayonge' while trying to mock others childishly.

Is it not why we are famous for age cheating? Bunch of grown-azz 36 years old running around with 17 year old kids on a pitch thinking they are smart and pretending to be 'young' but not realizing they are only fooling themselves. It is the same thing going on here. Tell these fools calling others old to tell us their age and how old they assume others to be.

omiobo: OP,you disgust me. What is the point of this thread?
Abeg, take it easy. Why should the OP disgust you?

Why not the highly symbolic leader of the biggest black Nation on Earth who looks like a scared Rabbit every time he is in front of a camera?

Why are you not embarrassed at GEJ's many gaffes ("I don't give a damn" , "black dominance" et al) that exposes how we are a nation still not putting our best hands forward?

Nobody expect GEJ to be perfect but no one expects him to be in the UK only for him to say he is in the USA. Let us start having ambition as a people and stop respecting and deifying authority figures blindly. They are our servants and representatives. Thinking that way will bring the sophistication that will lead to Nigerians selecting square pegs for square holes to the benefit of our Nation. Currently, Nigerians are simply way too emotional.

The President should earn the respect of Nigerians. He should be authoritative, confident, aware of his surroundings and knowledgeable about what he says. It is pointless turning on Nigerians who identify the absence of these qualities to the disgrace of Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: The Scandal Of Census Figures by Gbawe: 9:18am On Oct 30, 2012
ysquare: Indeed. Many only expected a truthful and 'correctional' head count of Nigerians from OBJ. We did not want favouritism in the South. We just wanted sincere actions that begin to make Nigeria a more equitable nation. Instead, OBJ embraced injustice and parochial servitude as he has done many times when in a position to truly deliver inspired leadership that may put Nigeria on the path of greatness.

Tragic really.

I don't know what is wrong with us in this country that what ever we said is base on sentiment, those allocation being to your leaders what are they doing with it that you want more?
What is your point?
PoliticsRe: GEJ Is At It Again Oooo...! by Gbawe: 3:00am On Oct 30, 2012
onatisi: gbawe,i think you should drop it and let the matter die.the statement and post u made earlier about gej was totally uncalled for and unbecoming, but if you insist you are right, well it is free world.carry on
How was it totally uncalled for and who are you to decide what is called for and uncalled for? Guy, it is wit - and I don't do senseless reverence for the sake of it. How about the concept of how Nigerians need a man who is sharp, erudite and 'quick on the uptake' representing them? Is it just to accept anyone as President and begin defending everything they do blindly?

The President is very gaffe-prone to the point it is natural to wonder about his general education and PHD. You may be a fan of GEJ but you need to understand he is accorded more 'room' by how Nigerian politics is generally 'accommodating' . You need to have a one-on-one with George Bush to note what he went through. Public office should not be for over-sensitive 'shrinking Violets'.
PoliticsRe: GEJ Is At It Again Oooo...! by Gbawe:
duality: you shouldn't have said this. its too childish for an old man like you.
If some of you cannot stand even the mildest of satirical talk against your 'messiah' , then it is probably prudent for you to stay away from public forums instead of insulting others because of your immaturity. GEJ is gaffe-prone to the point of embarrassment. He is not a good advertisement for Nigerian education. Simple.

Also, making the silly assumption fellow posters are "old" because they write maturely and don't use "cuz", "wuz" , "Lol" et al is indicative of how many Nigerians are fraudulent-minded people. That is why you go around the world using 'football-age' that makes you feel better about yourself.

Deceiving yourself and others that you are 'young' while insinuating others are old may work for you but it is something honest people don't patently do. Also, why not tell the forum how old you think I am so we can gain an idea of your definition of "old"? My mum always used to say a child could be 50 and an adult 16. You may be an irresponsible 30 year old man with no achievements while someone you age may have thriving businesses, kids, a wife etc. That does not make them "old". Rather, it makes you a fraud.

How old are you? The fool Beaf and his minions here perfected the nonsense of calling me "old" while I actually went on to use his utterances here to show we are virtually the same age. He did the 'old' thing because he is racked with inferiority complex and felt more comfortable , ala the whole Nigerians and football age deception thingy, to clutch at straws. I let it slide. I am now ready to put you and other fraudsters to bed because it is now a case of a lie told a million times beginning to resemble truth. Tell us your age and tell us mine.
