Health / Volunteers To Be Infected With Coronavirus For £3,500 In Bid To Find Vaccine by gbengress1: 11:29am On Mar 09, 2020
Volunteers could be paid £3,500 to be infected by a form of coronavirus.

As the race to find a vaccine for the potentially deadly bug continues, volunteers in east London are being paid to endure it.

The willing participants will receive £3,500 to be purposefully infected with the virus and live in quarantine at the Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in Whitechapel.

They will, however, be injected with two common but much less serious strains of the virus, reports the Daily Star .

Hvivo, the company behind the laboratory at Queen Mary, will be infecting 24 volunteers at a time with the 0C43 and 229E strains of the virus.

It is thought these strains will cause mild respiratory symptoms and be much less severe than the coronavirus that is currently spreading around the globe.

While they are different strains, it is thought a vaccine can be developed from this testing that would tackle the destructive virus.

Anyone who has volunteered to take part in this study will have to stay in quarantine for two weeks.

There will be quite a few restrictions placed on the participants during this time, including no exercise or physical contact with other people. They will only be able to eat and drink certain foods.

Any nurses or doctors who work on this study will have to wear ventilators and protective clothes while they are working in the lab or with any material that may be infected with the virus, such as dirty tissues or blood tests.

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency will have to agree on Hvivo's plans before this experiment can take place.

This testing is part of a $2bn global effort to find a vaccine for coronavirus as more people develop it and die from it .

It's likely that the reward for finding a coronavirus vaccine will be a lot higher than the £1.6bn that French drugmaker Sanofi made after selling the flu vaccine last year.

Over 20 Covid-19 vaccines are currently being developed, according to the World Health Organisation.

Following the experiment, the most effective drugs and vaccines will be chosen, and these will be used on patients who naturally contract coronavirus.

More than 270 people have now tested positive for coronavirus in the UK.

As of 9am on Sunday, 273 people had been diagnosed with Covid-19 - an increase of 67 from the 206 cases confirmed at 7am on Saturday.

It represents the largest day-on-day increase in diagnoses.

More than 23,500 people have been tested for the virus in the UK, with two patients with Covid-19 having died.

Two more cases have been confirmed in Scotland, bringing the total there to 18.

On Saturday night, three more people were diagnosed in Northern Ireland pushing its total to seven, while on Sunday morning it was announced confirmed cases in Wales had risen from two to four.

Supermarkets have started placing restrictions on items including pasta, anti-bacterial wipes and hand soap in a bid to prevent shoppers from stockpiling.

Politics / I Have Received Request To Dethrone Emir Sanusi – Ganduje by gbengress1: 7:41pm On Dec 19, 2019
The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday said he has received a letter from 35 civil society organisations calling for the immediate dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, for disobedience to constituted authority.

Mr Ganduje’s spokesperson, Abba Anwar, in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES said the CSOs are concerned that Mr Sanusi is making efforts to create a state within a state.

Mr Anwar did not list the 35 CSOs but said their request was signed by Ibrahim Ali, described as the chairman of the coalition.

Mr Ganduje has sought to whittle down the influence of Mr Sanusi by creating four new emirates and appointing first-class emirs for them.

Before the new law was put in place, the emir of Kano was the only first-class emir in the state.

Mr Ganduje has defended his actions saying it was in meeting with the popular demand of residents of the state.

Critics, however, say Mr Ganduje is moving against Mr Sanusi because the latter was critical of his government and did not support his re-election.

In his statement, Mr Anwar did not indicate if the governor would commence the process to dethrone Mr Sanusi and when that would be done.

Below is Mr Anwar’s full statement.

Kano Emirates: Gov. Ganduje Receives Letter From CSOs Urging For Immediate Dethronement of Emir Sanusi II

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has received a letter from a coalition of 35 civil society groups urging him to, in the interest of protecting the sanctity of the rule of law, and the mandate given to him by Kano electorate, as a matter of urgency, start the process of dethroning the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The letter titled “Kano State Emirate Council Law, 2019 : Demand Letter” states clearly that, “The coalition of 35 Civil Society Groups under the above-mentioned group (UMBRELLA OF KANO CONCERNED CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS) are curiously studying the unfolding events in the running of Kano State affairs especially in recent time, as it relates to the lingering face-off between the Government of Kano State on one hand and the Emir of Kano on the other hand.”
Reminding specifically that, matters that arose from the aftermath of Kano State High Court decision nullifying the Kano State Emirate Council Law, that was enacted by the State House of Assembly, which eventually paved way for the enactment of another Law, creating additional 4 First Class Emirates, which also empowers the Governor to take disciplinary measures against any erring emir, “…should be effected,” according to the letter.

The letter was signed by Comrade Ibrahim Ali, Chairman of the Coalition, which continues that, “Soon afterwards, the same Law which repeals all the existing Emirate Councils Laws, and consolidates it in the Kano State Emirate Council Law 2019, was again been challenged first by the purportedly 5 kingmakers from one of the 5 Emirates established by the said law.”

The letter lamented that, even the “…second litigation was initiated by the so-called Kano State Elders who indulged their group in their understanding that, the Law was aimed at distorting 1000 years of heritage or thereafter of Kano.”

After narrating all the disagreed areas in the letter, the group demands that, “That the action of the Emir of Kano Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II of continued undermining the constituted authority of the government of Kano State and its organs, is not only unconstitutional, but is an effort to create a state within a state. Which no responsible leadership will tolerate and allow to remain unabated.”

After dismissing the “Kano Elders” claim in making reference to “1000 years of heritage” the group deems it to say that that position was diversionary and only an attempt to derail from the reality, “…that the so-called elders making reference to 1000 years old heritage are completely derailing from the reality.”

They suggested that “With the recent decision of Kano State High Court, His Excellency shall proceed and ensure the full take-off of the Council of Emirs in the State. So as to stop the current distraction and generation of controversy.”

The letter seeks that, “If the Emir of Kano fails to submit to the authority of the government of Kano State, we call on the Governor of Kano State on the strongest term, to act strictly in accordance with the provision of Kano Emirate Council Law 2019 in order to heed the state forward.”

They concluded that they hope their demands and recommendations get the governor’s attention, noting and further necessary action, as provided by the Law establishing all the 4 Emirates in the state.

Car Talk / FRSC Makes U-turn, Says Driving With Google Map Is NOT An Offence by gbengress1: 12:45pm On Nov 28, 2019
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says driving with the aid of Google map is not an offence — contrary to a widely reported statement credited to one of its officers.

But it said deploying the app while driving is dangerous.

Bisi Kazeem, spokesman of the corps, said this in a statement issued on Thursday while reacting to a report by NAN which quoted Ayuba Gora, FRSC sector commander for the FCT, as saying the use of Google map while driving is outlawed.

He said though driving with the aid of Google map is not prohibited, deploying the app while a vehicle is in motion could cause accidents.

He said many road traffic accidents are a result of distraction caused by the use of mobile phones while driving.

“To state the obvious, we have always enlightened the public on the position of the law on use of phone while driving which the Sector Commander tried to emphasize during the flag off,” he said.

“The statement he made during the flag off buttresses the position of the Corps, which is that any driver who intends to deploy the use of Google map while driving must have it set on the phone before embarking on the journey, not while the vehicle is already in motion as this could be dangerous to the driver and other road users, and can lead to road traffic crash.

“We say this because, available records have shown that use of phone for whatever purpose; be it text, voice calls, chats, browsing, setting google map to find location etc while driving could be distractive and can easily lead to loss of concentration. This has led to many road traffic crashes with attendant loss of lives and properties.

“On the strength of this, the Federal Road Safety Corps wishes to reiterate its position on use of phone while driving as a dangerous and hazardous road traffic behaviour which has led to unwanted and avoidable road crashes.

“We therefore call on all motorists who intend to deploy the use of google map on their phone especially during the festive season when traffic density is high, to activate such before setting the vehicle in motion so as to ensure 100 percent concentration on the wheels.”

Business / FG Reviews Stamp Duty, Raises Threshold To N10,000 by gbengress1: 9:36am On Nov 28, 2019
The Federal Government has reviewed the N50 stamp duty charges on electronic payments in the country after receiving backlash from Nigerians and industry stakeholders.

A Financial Bill currently before the National Assembly stated the N50 charge would be imposed on transactions above N10,000 as against payment above N1,000 that had taken effect across the country in September.

The bill exempted bank transfers between two accounts owned by the same person or organisation.

The new bill aims to repeal a provision of the Stamp Duty Act 2014, which had a threshold for receipts chargeable with stamp duty as N4 and above.

The Central Bank of Nigeria in a circular to deposit money banks, processors and switches on September 17, 2019 authorised banks to unbundle merchant settlement amounts and charge applicable taxes and duties on individual transactions.

They were asked to charge a duty of N50 for services rendered in respect of electronic transfers and teller deposits from N1,000 and above on behalf of the Nigeria Postal Service.

The directive was condemned by mobile money agents, retailers, merchants and bank customers who said it would discourage the cashless transaction and financial inclusion agenda of the Federal Government.

While some merchants had started charging customer N50, others had stopped using the terminals due to the refusal of customers to pay the extra charges.

Analysts at PricewaterhouseCoopers, in their assessment of the review, said the increased threshold would benefit small businesses that had started transferring the N50 duty to their customers.

Biodun Fatoyinbo

Eniola Akinkuotu, Adelani Adepegba, Abuja

Detectives are presently questioning the founder of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, over the rape allegations levelled against him by Busola, a photographer and wife of popular singer, Timi Dakolo.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, said this during an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Responding to a question, Mba said, “Yes, he is in our custody.”

When asked if the pastor was being detained, the Force spokesman said it was too early to say.

He also said the investigation of Fatoyinbo was proof that the police had not swept the matter under the carpet as was being insinuated in some quarters.

When asked why it took so long for the pastor to be invited, Mba said the police wanted to get statements from several witnesses and then build a solid case before inviting him.

The police spokesman said, “We have done a whole lot of background investigations and spoken to a whole lot of people before now. It was a deliberate investigative procedure to bring him last. Although we may invite others later depending on how investigations go.

“We were not in a hurry to bring him because we wanted to have enough background information that would be used in interrogating him. We have done an extensive investigation.”

Mrs. Dakolo accused him of raping her 20 years ago while she was still a teenager.

The pastor had shunned a panel set up by the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria to investigate the rape allegations, stating that he was advised by his lawyers not to appear before the panel because it was prejudiced and may not conduct an impartial session.

The cleric in a statement last Friday, however, said he could appear before the panel after the police investigations.

The PFN had disclosed on Thursday that its probe into the allegations against Fatoyinbo was inconclusive because he failed to honour the invitation to appear before the panel.

But the Senior Assistant to the COZA Pastor, Ademola Adetuberu, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, disclosed that the legal advice was also premised on the statement issued and personally signed by the PFN President, Bishop Felix Omobude, “where our Pastor was publicly disowned.”
