feeling happy at Orba Road Nsukka .
Last night, my neighbour gave birth to a baby girl,
IN MY CAR.
Actually, it happened this morning. 12:58 am. I
have never witnessed a thing like that before. I
only saw such in Nollywood movies.
I was not fast asleep. But I was hearing the first
set of gentle knocks on my door in my dreams.
Kpam Kpam Kpam Kpam, Daniel o...repeatedly.
Later I would deem whoever was knocking that
way as unserious. How could such knocks wake
me up? But I have just slept off an hour before
then. So I was woken up immediately the knock
got louder. I rushed out, hearing the cries for
help. She was already in labour---my neighbour.
My God! I saw the baby's head pushing itself out
of my neighbour's privates. She was fast losing
blood, as they kept flowing uncontrollably. As if
that was not enough a strange sight for me, I saw
that white, long thing they call umbilical cord.
Damn it! That was actually when the baby had
completely come out. Chai. Poor child. Crying. We
didn't know what to do. I was clueless. Her
friend---a young lady---was clueless too. There
was no other neighbour available. And it was
already 01:05 am. But that my neighbour, ba?
She was a strong woman. She kept reassuring
her panic-stricken friend to stop shouting, re
affirming that she'd be fine. She was even the
one that suggested we go to a nearby hospital.
Olodo like me, I couldn't even think of any
meaningful thing to do. My head was full. But she
was strong. We carried her down to my car,
carrying the baby alongside, careful not to draw
the umbilical cord too apart from her. Chai.
Blood. She lost a lot of blood. I gently drove us to
a nearby hospital. The staff responded quickly.
The cord was cut while she was still in the car.
The baby survived. The mother survived too. I
went back home later and got them some clothes,
and tea, milk, bread and hot water for the
mother.
This is what I call miracle. Not turning water into
wine. In this part of the world, we say "Thank
God" for even things we can do ourselves. So for
the first time in my life, I'll do this, because I am
overwhelmed:
Thank God for my neighbour's strong resolve in
the face of hysteria;
Thank God for the mechanic guy that didn't tell
me stories yesterday, but promptly worked on the
car's fan belt, making the car available;
Thank God for the staff of Divine Mercy Hospital
and Maternity, Orba road, Nsukka, especially the
gate man, for their immediate response to our call
for help;
And finally, thank God for giving us humans all
that we need to survive the pestilence and pains
He also created on earth, for surely He created all
things. Amen!
I learnt a few things:
1. A pregnant woman shouldn't be left alone. I
used to say I'd run out of home when my wife
gets heavy, to avoid a pregnant woman's wahala.
Dear future wife, I have changed my mind. I now
understand what you women go through. I'll be
there, through it all. No business trips. No
conferences or seminar. In fact no work for me.
I'll be there. We will do it together. After all, we
had sex together (whatever that means).
2. I think one should always have fuel in one's
car. Anything can happen any time. And no petrol
station might be available at that time.
3. Do not overlook the importance of
neighbourliness. And if your neighbour is one who
hardly responds to knocks on his/her door (like
my former useless neighbour), declare such a
neighbour as useless to humanity.
Finally, women, please accept the assurances of
my ernest respect for your natural abilities. Truly,
there's more to your privates than just sexual
activity.
PS: the head nurse said I'd make a good father,
because of the way I was in charge. Is that true?
I mean, why not?

Dr. Olakunle Churchill, has dismissed
allegations that he was violent towards his
wife and was involved in a relationship with
his ‘female’ PA, describing allegation as
‘blackmail’.
Churchill, an entrepreneur and philanthropist,
disclosed this in a recent interview with Toast
Magazine.
“It’s funny to me,” the chairman of Big Church
Group which includes Big Church Foundation
said, “because I don’t have female Personal
Assistant, My PA is Mr Paul, who has been
working with me over the years. Besides, it
was a sponsored blackmail.”
He also declined to comment on whether his
wife, Tonto, caused uproar at his mother’s
home, pushing her to the floor and destroying
everything in the house, saying: “These issues
are private to me and my family.”
Responding to news about a separation
between him and his wife which was
purportedly leaked by his housemaid to an
online media, Churchill said: “Every family has
its ups and downs but I would not want to
talk about my family.”
He also denied that his wife moved out with
his son because he was violent.
“I wonder where they got such gist from?” he
questioned.
“I don’t believe my wife will say that, besides I
frown against such even my foundation
preaches against domestic violence in some of
our charity awareness campaigns. It is
obvious that all these channeled attacks are
targeted to drag my image and what I believe
in to the mud. Well, the truth is that I have
never raised my hands against my wife. I have
evidence of CCTV Cameras in my mum’s
house when this happened. It can be replayed
if you what us to go that far.”
His union to Tonto produced a son who was
one year old on Friday. And he seems to be
indifferent about the tussle in his family.
“I see nothing in it,” he said.
“It’s a phase of life. Since, it does not affect
my cheques and savings. But I truly want to
call on bloggers or on social media addicts to
verify facts before assuming. Every marriage
has good and bad moments. It’s just
unfortunate that I recently discovered that the
alleged marriage instability is making
headlines on some media platforms. Please
Tonto Dikeh fans and well-wishers take it easy
on her, guess she is still adjusting to
motherhood. With time, it will be well.”
Recall that Tonto Dikeh revealed her frame of
mind over their purported failed marriage,
refusing for her spirit to be dampened.
The actress who recently garnered 1.5 million
followers on Instagram, said: “There seems to
be several rumours floating around media
recently. However, let the record show, there
hasn’t been any deals made in regards to a
fight between myself and any other fighters. I
am happily retired and enjoying life at this
time. If any changes are to come; be sure that
I will be the first to let the world know.”
News of Tonto’s marriage break-up started
early in the year, when reports filtered in that
her husband of 17 months was reportedly
having an affair with his personal assistant,
Rosaline Meurer, which she debunked on a live
interview on HipTV.
Hence, it was with some shock that the
actress disclosed that her marriage was
broken on Instagram.
“When a woman leaves her husband, she takes
her child because absolutely nothing else
matters to her but the child,” she wrote.
“This is what I did and I happily give all
access for his father to see him. What goes on
in my marriage and home is my personal life,
I’m grateful for all the years of support you all
have been giving me but when it comes to the
matter of the heart have enough respect to let
us go through our moments alone.”
Already, the actress seems to have deleted all
pictures showing her and her husband as a
couple from her Instagram page. Their child,
Andre Omodayo Churchill, was born in
February 2016. |
There is the balance of the N360m alleged
bribe which the police accused Governor
Nyesom Wike of Rivers State of dishing out to
election umpires in the run up to the
December 10 re-run legislative polls?
The police said last week that they had
recovered N111.3million of the sum from 23
officials of the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) saddled with conducting
the elections.
They did not say at the time what became of
the remaining N248m.
The Chairman of the panel, Damian Okoro, a
Deputy Commissioner of Police, alleged that
three senior electoral officers collected N20
million each of the N360 million while the
remaining officers received N15 million each.
However, The Nation can now report that the
police believe the balance was squandered on
choice cars ,houses and other assets by the
‘bribe’ recipients.
A source knowledgeable about the report of
the 15-man panel set up by Police Inspector
General, Ibrahim Idris, to probe the
circumstances surrounding the election said
the suspects embarked on a spending spree
with their share.
The source who pleaded not to be named
said: “The panel discovered that some of them
(suspects) bought houses, cars and even
renovated their existing houses with the
money.
“The panel also discovered that some gave
out money to their relatives while some others
invested. Several cars were recovered and they
would be tendered during prosecution in
court.”
Governor Wike had dismissed the police report
as lacking substance.
His Special Assistant on Electronic Media,
Simeon Nwakaudu, said: “The statement (by
the police) is patently false, politically
motivated and cooked by the police to justify
the violence they visited in the people of
Rivers State during the re-run.
”For the avoidance of doubt, the Rivers State
Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike did not spend
N360 million to rig the re-run legislative
elections of December 10, 2016.
“The people of Rivers State overwhelmingly
voted the PDP across the state because of the
outstanding performance of Governor Wike
since May 29, 2015.”
Speaking further on the police findings
yesterday, the source said: “In the audio tape
that went viral, the governor was mentioning
8,8,7, and what he was referring to was the
officials of INEC. He gave the leaders of the
INEC officials from the three states,
N20million each.”
He added: “As mentioned by the IG, the report
will be sent to the Attorney General of the
Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN)
who will now go through it and necessary
action will be taken against those indicted. He
is the Chief Law of the Federation.”
Asked to respond to the allegation by the
Rivers State government that the panel report
was made up, the source said: “Where did the
police get the huge amount of money
displayed from? “Those cars and houses
recovered, where did the panel get them
from? Is it police money or something?
“23 people have been arrested and they all
confessed. It was through them that the
money was recovered. It was through them
that the cars were also recovered. The 23
people arrested, the panel has their video
confessions and they all wrote their official
statements with their own hands.
“They are all educated people and they used
their own handwriting to write their confession
and they also spoke on video. They video will
be provided during prosecution.
“All documents are available on how they were
summoned to the Government House, how
they were given the money inside Government
House and how vehicles were brought to them
to move the Ghana Must Go bags, and how
they were moved to their hotels. Everything
was confessed to on video.
“This is not a political issue. This is a case
where money that was supposed to be used
to build schools, hospitals, roads and others
social amenities was squandered. So, whoever
does wrong will be made to carry his or her
cross irrespective of political affiliation.
“So, that is the true position of everything.
Everything is there and all the people that the
money was recovered from are alive, they
confessed both in writing and on video.” |
