Homosexuality is an increasing menace in the Nigerian society like in many other countries of the world. In some places, the practice has been legalised and in those places, it has had great disruption to the basis of their societal life and Nigeria stands such risks. Two Manchester United fans spent Friday night hidden in an Old Trafford toilet as part of an ultimately failed attempt to see the Premier League game against Arsenal on Saturday. The BBC reported Tuesday that the two supporters had been on a stadium tour of United’s home ground but detached themselves from the rest of the party. They were, however, discovered during a routine security sweep of Old Trafford on Saturday morning, several hours before kick-off. The pair were handed over to police, who decided against arresting the duo. United said there was no risk to supporters attending the Arsenal game as the two fans had been searched and their belongings put through a metal detector prior to the tour. This incident happened six months after the Premier League match between United and Bournemouth at Old Trafford was called off shortly before the scheduled kick-off after a suspect package was found in a stadium toilet. It turned out to be a fake explosive accidentally left behind following a security training exercise earlier in the week. |

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has declared that in the event that the country is partitioned, only the Igbo nation could stand the test of time. Fayose stated this yesterday when the Ndigbo Community in Ekiti conferred him with the traditional title of ‘Nwanne – De – Namba at the Olukayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti during the Igbo Cultural Day. Fayose deplored those he called “fake political leaders”, who he said are only accessible to the people when they are looking for votes only to buy bullet proof cars and erect artificial walls around themselves so that they would not be accessible to the people after the poll. He said, “whatever anybody says, the Igbos are a unique people in the country. God forbid, if Nigeria should break, they are the only nation that can survive because they are industrious people. All the permanent structures found everywhere are owned by the Igbo people. “Wherever you go in the country, you will find an igbo man there. “No igbo man can vote for any other party in Ekiti State except the party I belong to because we are bonded with one another “, he said. The Governor bemoaned that women have been relegated in the scheme of things adding that his administration would provide for them in the 2017 budget of Ekiti State. Earlier in his address, the President General of Ndigbo Community in South West, Chief Nathaniel Ezeonu said that the Igbo people in Ekiti State want to have their own market. He added that the traders want to acquire an uncompleted market along poly road Ado Ekiti which the state government has pegged at N380 million. Ezeonu pleaded with Governor Fayose to rescind the decision to shut down a popular market believed to be populated by igbo traders selling phones and other accessories. Ezeonu said that the theme of the Cultural Day titled: ‘Ndigno and Socio-economic Reality in Nigeria, Which way Forward’, was apt because the race have contributed more to the economic development of the country.

Permit me to begin this contribution with an apology for my disappearance from the literary and political scene for the last one month but this was due to circumstances beyond my control. On October 21st, five days after my 56th birthday, I was arrested by the EFCC without an arrest warrant at the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos where I had been earlier granted bail. Thereafter I was illegally detained by them without any detention order for 21 days. Kindly note that this was after I had been detained by them for a grueling 67 days 6 months ago (from 9th of May till July 15th), brought before the Federal High Court in Lagos, arraigned on spurious and politically-motivated charges and locked up in Ikoyi prison for a number of days whilst I attempted to perfect my court bail. After perfecting bail, on 21st October I was re-arrested and the whole nightmare began again: only this time it was far more insidious and worse. Throughout the time of the second detention I was kept in a dingy underground cell at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja where I met a number of other high profile opposition figures like Senator Bala Mohammed, the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, the former Minister of State for Defence and Mr. Reuben Abati, the former spokesman to President Goodluck Jonathan. During the course of my 21 days incarceration, my abductors did not ask me any questions or say one word to me other than to formally serve me with a new set of fresh criminal charges the morning after I got there which I simply signed for. After that I heard nothing from them and I was told nothing though I had daily visits to the medical clinic at the EFCC due to my deteriorating health. Three weeks later, on November 10th, I was brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja and arraigned on yet another set of spurious, baseless and politically-motivated charges. These ones were even more ridiculous and far-fetched than the first set in Lagos. I was falsely accused of receiving N26 million cash from the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, for media work for the Jonathan administration in 2014. Thankfully, I was granted bail by the court and I was detained at Kuje prison for a further four days whilst I attempted to perfect my bail. At Kuje I was kept in the terrorist wing of the prison which was built by the British government specifically for Boko Haram convicts and suspects. There were 47 of them in the facility and I was with them throughout. These were tough, disciplined, hardened, surprisingly well-educated and intimidating men. The single cells and the entire terrorist section of the prison was pervaded by an eerie silence throughout the night and low tone whispers throughout the day. The only thing that broke the monotony of silence was the regular and constant call to Muslim prayers and the loud and regular cries of “Allahu Akbar”. This was a frightful place and those that were locked up there were very dangerous and frightful people yet thankfully the Lord went ahead of me. The single cells, though small, were clean, self-contained, well-ventilated, dry and very neat. The inmates were surprisingly very kind and friendly towards me and turned out to be my best friends and bodyguards whenever I toured the other parts of the prison. I was very impressed with them and when I heard their stories and what some of them had been subjected to by the security forces and the state tears came to my eyes. Most of those men were not Boko Haram killers but had been falsely accused, tortured and just dumped into prison and I felt nothing but pain and sorrow when I heard their stories. When I went to visit the great and brilliant freedom fighter, Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of IPOB and easily the most courageous, powerful and credible Igbo leader in Nigeria today in his cell, we had a very instructive and long discussion. I had never met Nnamdi before and I was amazed at his depth of knowledge, his immense courage and his deep convictions. There is no doubt in my mind that that man is going places and in him the Igbo have an Ojukwu and a Nnamdi Azikiwe all rolled into one. He is destined for greatness. My Boko Haram friends accompanied me to that meeting, drew a ten man security cordon around me when we entered the general population of the prison and waited outside as Nnamdi and I spoke for almost three hours. They even accompanied me to Church on Sunday and waited outside until we finished. Given what I have written about Boko Haram in the past and given my total aversion to any form of violence, terrorism and radical Islam, this was a classic case of God granting me favour before my enemies. Everyone dreaded them in that prison but I am proud to say that they were my friends and I will never forget their courage, kindness and fellowship for the rest of my life. The enemy had placed me in the lions den but the lions and their prey became the best of friends. Not only were my Boko Haram section mates very good to me but so were the other inmates in the general prison population. Not only that, the head of the prison DCP Akilu Abdullah, his Chief warden and his entire staff and team of prison wardens were firm, courteous and professional not just to me but to all the other inmates. This was the doing of the Lord and it was marvellous in my sight. Throughout my travails I have never questioned God and I have been inspired and comforted by His word which says that in all things we must give thanks to Him. I am innocent of all the charges and allegations and as I have said elsewhere the whole thing is an attempt by the Federal Government and an increasingly desperate EFCC that is obsessed with my name and putting me away to discredit, break and silence me. Yet, in all this I am not moved and neither can I ever be broken or silenced because, like the biblical Job, “I know that my Redeemer liveth”. Like Shakespeare’s Macbeth, “my head is bloodied but not bowed” and “I shall fight until the flesh is hacked from my bones”. And as that fight and struggle unfolds and unwinds I take solace in the powerful and beautiful words of the Victorian poet William Ernest Henley in my favourite poem titled ‘Invictus’ which was written in 1875. He wrote, “Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul”. Like Nelson Mandela did at Robben Island prison every day for 26 years, I recited that poem three times a day on each and every day of my total of 90 days detention this year. And if I am arrested and detained again by the EFCC or any of President Buhari’s other numerous security or intelligence agencies, I will continue to recite it. I have no fear of what men or satan can do to me and I trust and have faith in the God that I serve. Having explained my absence for the few weeks with this appetizer, permit me get to the meat of it and now serve the main dish of this contribution. (TO BE CONTINUED). Fiery Enugu cleric, the Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has come out hard on President Muhammadu Buhari accusing him of inflicting pains, suffering, and massive deaths on Nigerians. DAILY POST recalls that Mbaka, the director Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria, AMEN, had before the 2015 general election predicted that former President Jonathan would be roundly defeated in the polls. He had in the message entitled “From Goodluck to Badluck”, accused Jonathan of running the economy aground. Soon after Buhari was sworn-in as President, Mbaka visited him at the Presidential villa where they met behind closed doors. He had also in another message while President Buhari was away on medical trip, stated that some persons were blocking him from having access to the President. However, in one of his latest messages released to his congregation, the Roman Catholic priest maintained that with the way things were going, Buhari would be rejected by Nigerians in 2019. He slammed the President for occupying himself with trivial issues like the emergency of Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu as the Senate President and the Deputy respectively, while the country was on fire. The full message below: “The issue is that Mbaka is speaking as the Spirit leads him; there is hunger everywhere; my job is to tell leaders the truth, the landlords are crying, the tenants are lamenting, sellers are crying, buyers are lamenting; there is hunger on the streets (onye obuna na ajazi eze) people are talking harshly, there is a channel called Aljazera, (ndi an aja-eze), many students are being rusticated out of school because they cannot pay school fees; the fees are being hiked. Proprietors are distressed, many companies are winding up; the economy is relaxed, Nigeria is being attacked ferociously and you are the citizens as well as the members of the church. “So, when you are being attacked, the church is being attacked, that’s why I can’t keep quiet when things are going wrong. I am telling the President to look around him and know those who are advising him rightly and those who are telling him that there is no trouble; the President should know that there is trouble; if things continue like this, in the next election, nobody will vote for him. “Whether they like it or not, I am giving the raw truth; if the President should have somebody like me and he cannot be talking with me, then there is a problem; there is a problem somewhere; somebody who can advise you without asking for anything and he is representing the poor masses in the country and he won’t tell you lies; he will praise you when you are doing well and when you are not doing well, he will look at you in the face and tell you. “I don’t need the President; I need God, I need the Holy Spirit, I need Jesus; there is suffering everywhere, people are suffering. To feed is now a problem, and a hungry man is an angry man. Hunger and anger will lead to danger. “So, let him know whether he can do away with some advisers around him and bring in the people who are experts in economic revamp; there are people who are experts in that; let them begin to empower people, people are not empowered, they are still walking around in vicious circles, planning and planning and planning. Go to mortuaries, go to mortuaries, there are no spaces. I repeat, myself went to Annunciation Hospital the other time to see my brother, coming in, there was no space, the whole mortuary was filled up and they told me it is the same thing in the Eastern Medical Centre and that if I go to UNTH, there is no space, the death rate is high. “People are living in hope and in hope; the adorers are hoping that things will be well; I’m calming the situation, when you tell somebody same thing everyday, when will things be well, when the person is in the grave? Hunger everywhere, many neighbours don’t eat again, many are being attacked by hunger, hunger is becoming a normal thing and there are people responsible for this; mortuary and ambulance business is now the thriving it; many cannot afford drugs; they can’t pay and many are using it to rob the poor by opening satanic centres to dupe the poor and they will be giving people fake prophecies, many terrible things are happening in these centres in the name of churches; these are robbers; people will tell you lies to take money from you. These are robbers, these are hooligans who are at work in today’s Nigeria, many are becoming hawkers, who will buy from you, with what? Even those selling palm oil are adulterating it, even rice, wahala, even tomatoes, because of the price, people put preservatives and sell poison to people, I don’t know whether some people now embalm tomatoes, what is happening? Things are hard, even to change clothes, everyday more pipes are being blown, the Avengers are at work and up till now, there is no solution. You know when certain things begin to happen, you begin to ask some questions, somebody like me will begin to ask – when will this end (nke a kabu ututu), this is still good morning of it. “If it continues the next three months, there will be no money to pay salaries; the vicious effect is disastrous and when salaries cannot be paid, teachers will come home, students will stop going to school, there will be more kidnapping, more hooliganism, more armed robbery, more prostitution, immorality will be on the hike, so, the President should sit up, there is a red light blinking on the country, the issue of Saraki and Ekweremadu, nobody wants to listen to such stories any more, whether Saraki is the President of the Senate or Ekweremadu is not this or that, the countrymen are tired of such stories. “We need economic experts, gurus, sages that are sincere, who can come in and think about our economic revamp and judicial reformation. How can a case be in court for more than 10 years? Even if you prosecute all the senators, the matter may linger till the next 20 years; so what purpose have you achieved? All these noise, EFCC arrested this and that, after one week, that one is over; people are dying of hunger; dollar is growing everyday and Naira is falling; Euro is rising everyday and Naira is collapsing everyday; pound is on the hike everyday, on a mega level and Naira is dwindling on a higher level, before you know it, people will begin to lose hope and it will affect their faith in God, because they will begin to lose faith and ask God where are you? That is where it affects me because it affects the faith of the people. The Bible says if the foundation is destroyed, what can the just do? The Bible says the just man shall live by faith, that is my simple logic, when shall this end? “These Avengers phenomenon, I did something that if the leaders of today are wise, the problem could have been averted. By the gift of the Holy Spirit, His sagacity, I was proactive; that time they have not started bombing; I made a lot of effort; I won’t tell you what I spent so that the President will not suffer what he is about to suffer. Like I told you, this is just the good morning of it, very soon, people who are quiet will begin to talk, when somebody like me will bring my cheque and all the money I have in my account will finish in school fees, hospital bills, is it were well with these peole will they be coming to me. I am receiving the pain and shock drastically. “The quantum of charity we are doing in the ministry is telling the level of poverty that is in the atmosphere. To eat is now a problem, people no longer say give us these days our daily bread but give us this day our daily bread, man must eat to survive, people are not even talking about jobs any more, graduates are everywhere, those who are making now are those who are selling dollars.” What do you think about Mbaka? What name do we call him? |

Michael Essien has claimed that his country Ghana, is a better footballing side than their West African rivals, Nigeria. The former Chelsea midfielder, who was speaking in an interview with BBC, said despite not winning the Africa Cup of Nations for over 30 years, they were superior to the Super Eagles. Nigeria has missed the last two editions of the Nations Cup, after they won the 2013 edition in South Africa. The last time the Black Stars won it was 1963. “I think I was not yet born the last time we won the Nations Cup, but still we are better than Nigeria as far as football is concerned,” Essien told the BBC. Michael Essien also revealed his top five nominees for the 2016 African Footballer of the Year award. The Panathanaikos man picked former teammate at Chelsea John Obi Mikel, Victor Wanyama of Kenya, Aubameyang of Gabon, Riyad Mahrez of Algeria and Andrew Ayew of Ghana. http://dailypost.ng/2016/11/14/black-stars-better-super-eagles-michael-essien/
