Health / Women Who Have Babies At This Age Are More Likely To Have Intelligent Children by genuinechimere(m): 6:54pm On Dec 21, 2015
If you're in your 20s, you're probably familiar with the feeling of being bombarded by engagement and baby announcements every time you log into Facebook. Not matching pace in the rat race to couple up, settle down, and start a family? That's okay—a new study suggests it might be wise to sit tight and wait a bit before having kids.

Researchers at the London School of Economics analyzed data from the Millennium Cohort Study, which monitors the development of 18,000 British children for an extended period of time, in order to determine the effect of a mother's age on the growth and development of her child. The golden years? Your 30s.

The study published in the journal of Biodemography and Social Biology determined that babies born to women in their thirties are more likely to be intelligent, score higher in cognitive testing and outperform those born to women in their twenties or forties.

Additionally, "First-time mothers in their 30s are, for example, likely to be more educated, have higher incomes, are more likely to be in stable relationships, have healthier lifestyles, seek prenatal care earlier and have planned their pregnancies," researcher Alice Goisis told The Times.

And while women who give birth in their forties tend to breastfeed and read to their children more, and smoke less, this age bracket is the most likely to have obese children—as women of this age were found to be less likely than younger mothers to play with their kids.

Business / Oil Price: Brent Crude Hits 11-year Low by genuinechimere(m): 5:24pm On Dec 21, 2015
Oil prices have fallen to levels not seen since 2004, surpassing the lows seen during the recession of 2008.
Brent crude sank to $36.05 a barrel - its weakest since July 2004 - before recovering slightly to $36.47.
A global oversupply has dramatically driven down the price of oil, with suppliers failing to reach agreements to address the glut.
A year earlier, the price of Brent stood at about $60 a barrel. In June 2014, it stood at $115.
The price of US crude was also down on Monday, dropping 31 cents to $34.42 a barrel - the lowest since 2009.
Cheaper fuel
Analysts and oil bosses have said there is little sign that the downward trend will change, with more US and Russian oil reaching the markets.
Iranian oil supply will also resume in 2016, following the lifting of sanctions.
In November, the 12 members of Opec maintained production at 30 million barrels per day, as first agreed in December 2011.
Many consumers have enjoyed the falling price of fuel in the form of lower petrol prices; several UK supermarkets have began selling petrol at below £1 per litre - which they last did in 2009.
However, oil firms have had profit margins squeezed, forcing them to cut spending in investment and exploration.
Governments of some oil producing countries have also been forced to cut spending as revenue from oil plunges.
The falling price has also led to questions about the merger of energy giants Royal Dutch Shell and BG Group. Earlier this month, David Cumming, head of equities at Standard Life Investments, told the BBC that the deal no longer "makes financial sense" with the oil price at current levels.

Business / U.S. Oil Exports Shouldn't Bother OPEC: Iran Is The Problem by genuinechimere(m): 5:58pm On Dec 17, 2015
An end to the U.S.’s 40-year ban on oil exports is probably not what OPEC needs right now. Yet a resurgent Iran may present a greater threat as it prepares to dump a million barrels on the market next year. While OPEC “could have done without” the return of U.S. crude, “probably much more impactful will be whatever comes out of Iran, starting sometime in the second quarter,” said David Fyfe, head of market research and analysis at trading house Gunvor Group Ltd. Researcher IHS Inc. also said the immediate effect of the ban’s repeal would be “relatively minor.”
Iran, once the second-largest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, plans to boost supply by 500,000 barrels a day within weeks of sanctions being lifted early in 2016, and by 1 million barrels months later. The Persian Gulf nation has staunchly defended its right to restore output even as a global oversupply sends crude below $40 a barrel.

By contrast, the lifting of the U.S. export ban -- which may go to a Congress vote as soon as Thursday -- won’t have a “major volumetric impact” for the time being as U.S. production has declined, Fyfe said. The end of restrictions won’t “materially affect” the global market balance over the next six months, according to the analyst, who’s also the former head of oil-market analysis at the International Energy Agency.“With U.S. production in short-term decline, the physical pressure to export has diminished,” Fyfe said by phone.

OPEC Strategy

U.S. output has fallen since June as the crude-price collapse squeezes out high-cost drillers, indicating that OPEC’s year-old strategy to keep pumping to defend market share is starting to work. A contraction of the spread between West Texas Intermediate oil and Brent, the global benchmark, also makes significant export volumes unlikely since they’d be comparatively expensive, according to IHS.

“Immediate physical implications are relatively minor given the narrow spread between WTI and Brent,” said Jamie Webster, a Washington-based senior director at IHS Energy.

WTI traded at the smallest discount to Brent in 11 months on Wednesday after the U.S. House and Senate on Tuesday evening reached a deal on tax and spending plans that included an end to the oil-trade limits. The deal has been brokered to help smooth its passage through Congress.

Longer Term

The lifting of the ban may have a greater impact on OPEC in the longer term, especially on member states such as Nigeria that produce similar crudes to the U.S.’s light, sweet varieties.

“The threat is mainly against West African producers who now may see more competition from U.S. oil producers against their customers,” said Torbjorn Kjus, chief oil analyst at DNB Markets. “This is because they are light, sweet crude producers, just like U.S. shale.”

Nigeria has been relying on other markets after its shipments to the U.S. shrank with the jump in American shale-oil production.

Other nations in the 13-member group may also ultimately suffer as U.S. exports add to the glut of crudes in the Atlantic Basin, according to Citigroup Inc.

“Given that the Atlantic Basin light, sweet -- i.e. Brent -- is what everything hangs on to, it takes down everything in the process,” said Seth Kleinman, European head of energy research at Citigroup.

OPEC, which controls about 40 percent of global oil production, has been quick to dismiss any concerns.

“The net effect of export of American oil on the market is zero,” Abdalla El-Badri, secretary-general of the organization, said Tuesday. “This will have no effect on the price because the U.S. still is an importing country.”

The U.S., which imported more than 7 million barrels a day in 2014, surpassed Russia and Saudi Arabia earlier this year to become the world’s biggest producer of oil and gas.

Science/Technology / Africa-shaped Solar Plant Lights Up Rwanda by genuinechimere(m): 2:22pm On Dec 13, 2015
It's billed as the fastest infrastructure project ever built in Africa.

Only one year passed from signing the agreement to construct the 8.508 megawatt solar plant east of Rwanda's capital Kigali to full production.

The facility increased the country's generation capacity by 6%, lighting up 15,000 homes. With a field stacked with 28,360 panels, investors say it's the largest photovoltaic plant in the continent's sub-Saharan region, with the exception of South Africa.

"We chose Rwanda because there was a real need and a strong business case," says Chaim Motzen, co-founder of Gigawatt Global, the company which built the plant, and the driving force behind the venture.

"At project inception, there were only 110 megawatts on grid - of which approximately 40% were diesel - for a population of 12 million people," he adds.

The breakneck speed of the enterprise was propelled by a clause in the deal which meant it had to be completed within just a few months.

"My team and I did not sleep for six months," says Motzen, adding that the momentum was helped by Rwandan government's sharp focus on increasing the amount of energy on the grid. The facility is spread across 17 hectares and can be monitored from anywhere in the world, but it's usually observed from Norway's capital Oslo.

It cost $23.7 million and was financed by an international consortium of partners including the FMO, a Dutch development bank, Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, Norfund, Scatec Solar and KLP.

The project was also supported by Power Africa, U.S. president Barack Obama's initiative to increase access to electricity on the continent.

The plant, which has been operating since September 2014, has even attracted some star power. In August U2 frontman and co-founder of anti-poverty advocacy group One.org Bono toured the facility with a U.S. government delegation, and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair also paid a visit.

The solar field, which is shaped like the African continent, is located on land owned by Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, a residential community which cares for Rwanda's vulnerable children orphaned before and after the 1994 genocide.

The Village is leasing the land to the plant, and Gigawatt Global plans to train some of the students attending a school on its ground in skills needed to work in the solar power industry. The new facility is part of Rwanda's aggressive push to connect more of the country's households to the grid.

Only 18% of the country's population has access to electricity according to the World Bank, compared to the 35.3% average for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Unreliable power supply has in the past impacted education, with some schools suspending computer learning programs because of frequent power cuts. Coffee and tea industries also suffered, producing far below capacity due to high fuel costs for back-up generators.

However, the government has made a leap since 2008 when only 6% of population had access to electricity, and aims to connect nearly three quarters of the nation's households by 2017. The target is even higher for health facilities -- the government plans for all of them to get a reliable supply of electricity in the next two years.

"I think solar power will play a key role in getting more people access to power, both on-grid and off-grid. Factors include the speed and relative simplicity of solar, the tremendous decrease in costs over the last few years and improving battery storage technology. Of course, there are also important environmental benefits," says Motzen.

"Is it the only solution? No. But will it be an important part of the solution? Absolutely," he adds.

Politics / Iran, Russia Reject Idea Of Joint Oil Output Cuts With Saudi Arabia by genuinechimere(m): 6:34am On Dec 04, 2015
Oil-producing countries looked unlikely to reach a deal to lift languishing prices at a meeting on Friday after Iran, Iraq and Russia swiftly rejected a surprise proposal that appeared to have been floated by Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, the largest oil producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), was prepared to propose members cut oil output by 1 million barrels per day next year if non-OPEC countries joined in, industry publication Energy Intelligence reported.

A Saudi source said later the report was "baseless" but declined further comment and a source at Energy Intelligence said it stood by its story. Oil prices rose 3 percent on Thursday but analysts said a global deal would be hard to reach.

Saudi Arabia has long insisted it would cut production only if fellow OPEC members and non-OPEC countries joined in. The report quoted a senior OPEC delegate as saying the Saudis would agree to cuts if Iraq freezes production rises and Iran and non-members such as Russia, Mexico, Oman and Kazakhstan contribute.

But Russia and OPEC members Iran and Iraq quickly rejected the idea. OPEC and non-OPEC producers have not cooperated to tackle low oil prices since they joined forces 15 years ago to help the market recover from the 1998 financial crisis.

Since then top non-OPEC producer Russia has repeatedly resisted calls for joint action and grown its output by 70 percent. Iran also wants to increase output after years of Western sanctions.

OPEC's policy meeting will be held in Vienna on Friday. OPEC also held a rare informal meeting there on Thursday but the Saudis made no proposals, according to ministers and delegates.

"We do not accept any discussion about increases of Iran production after the lifting of sanctions. It is our right and anyone cannot limit us to do it. We will not accept anything in this regard," Iranian oil minister Bijan Zangeneh told reporters in Vienna before the informal meeting.

Religion / Pope In A Reasonably Priced Car by genuinechimere(m): 6:20pm On Dec 01, 2015
The days of the bullet-proof Popemobile are long gone - the cars Pope Francis travelled in during his visit to Africa are no exception. So what can we deduce from his rides?

1. Honda Ballade Sedan

This fairly ordinary car took the Pope around Kenya's capital Nairobi. Kenya's The Star newspaper describes it as "humble".
Motoring journalist Guy Bird thinks it is "deemed to be sensible" showing a "broad concern about the economy". "It isn't flash," he adds. Fellow motoring journalist Zog Ziegler is concerned that it isn't too spacey. "There isn't much room for his papal robes in there - they aren't spoiling him".
That may be having an effect, speculates Quartz's Ariel Zirulnick. She writes that the Pope "earned the adoration of Kenyans" in this ride which is "a stark contrast to the luxury SUVs and limousines in which leaders here usually get around"

2. Kia Soul

This South Korean brand, which picked up the Pope in Uganda's Entebbe airport, sells well around the world and is "little bit up from the Honda" says Mr Ziegler.
But it is still another relatively inexpensive car, notes Mr Bird. He is also impressed with the 4x4 crossover's high roof, which he thinks should have made papal waving easier. And he muses whether the name of the car has any meaning.

3. Mitsubishi L200

That curved glass is expensive, notes Mr Ziegler. "And it's not for security as it's open on the sides".
It's probably more of a wind shield "to stop his hat falling off" he speculates. The curved glass is not the only extravagance - despite not being a "showy" brand, Mitsubishis aren't cheap, he says.
They are durable and "can go anywhere" he adds. And this is something that Mr Bird agrees on.
"A pick-up is something a farmer would use - they are sending a message out that he is a regular guy," says Mr Bird.

4. Modified Toyota Land Cruiser

None of these brands can be described as glitzy, says Mr Bird. But this Toyota, which took the Pope around the Central African Republic's capital Bangui, is several generations old, he notes.
It's made by the world's largest car company, points out Mr Ziegler. "It's a bit cheap," he says. "It looks like they've just added a bit of chipboard on the top".
But he says there is one big thing going for it - it's "very, very tough, possibly [more so] than the Mitsubishi".
It all adds to the image Mr Bird thinks the Pope is giving off - he is in a functional vehicle, getting a job done. There is one more thing these cars have in common - the licence plate SCV 1. This is an abbreviation of the Italian and Latin names for Vatican City, Stato della Citta del Vaticano and Status Civitatis Vaticanae.

Health / 10 Myths About Introverts by genuinechimere(m): 12:51pm On Nov 30, 2015
Myth #1 : Introverts don’t like to talk.
This is not true. Introverts just don’t talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about something they are interested in, and they won’t shut up for days.
Myth #2 : Introverts are shy.
Shyness has nothing to do with being an Introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What they need is a reason to interact. They don’t interact for the sake of interacting. If you want to talk to an Introvert, just start talking. Don’t worry about being polite.
Myth #3 : Introverts are rude.
Introverts often don’t see a reason for beating around the bush with social pleasantries. They want everyone to just be real and honest. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable in most settings, so Introverts can feel a lot of pressure to fit in, which they find exhausting.
Myth #4 : Introverts don’t like people.
On the contrary, Introverts intensely value the few friends they have. They can count their close friends on one hand. If you are lucky enough for an introvert to consider you a friend, you probably have a loyal ally for life. Once you have earned their respect as being a person of substance, you’re in.
Myth #5 : Introverts don’t like to go out in public.
Nonsense. Introverts just don’t like to go out in public FOR AS LONG. They also like to avoid the complications that are involved in public activities. They take in data and experiences very quickly, and as a result, don’t need to be there for long to “get it.” They’re ready to go home, recharge, and process it all. In fact, recharging is absolutely crucial for Introverts.
Myth #6 : Introverts always want to be alone.
Introverts are perfectly comfortable with their own thoughts. They think a lot. They daydream. They like to have problems to work on, puzzles to solve. But they can also get incredibly lonely if they don’t have anyone to share their discoveries with. They crave an authentic and sincere connection with ONE PERSON at a time.
Myth #7 : Introverts are weird.
Introverts are often individualists. They don’t follow the crowd. They’d prefer to be valued for their novel ways of living. They think for themselves and because of that, they often challenge the norm. They don’t make most decisions based on what is popular or trendy.
Myth #8 : Introverts are aloof nerds.
Introverts are people who primarily look inward, paying close attention to their thoughts and emotions. It’s not that they are incapable of paying attention to what is going on around them, it’s just that their inner world is much more stimulating and rewarding to them.
Myth #9 : Introverts don’t know how to relax and have fun.
Introverts typically relax at home or in nature, not in busy public places. Introverts are not thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. If there is too much talking and noise going on, they shut down. Their brains are too sensitive to the neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Introverts and Extroverts have different dominant neuro-pathways. Just look it up.
Myth #10 : Introverts can fix themselves and become Extroverts.
A world without Introverts would be a world with few scientists, musicians, artists, poets, filmmakers, doctors, mathematicians, writers, and philosophers. That being said, there are still plenty of techniques an Extrovert can learn in order to interact with Introverts. (Yes, I reversed these two terms on purpose to show you how biased our society is.) Introverts cannot “fix themselves” and deserve respect for their natural temperament and contributions to the human race. In fact, one study (Silverman, 1986) showed that the percentage of Introverts increases with IQ.

Crime / The Suspected Ringleader Of The Paris Attack Killed by genuinechimere(m): 2:50pm On Nov 19, 2015
The suspected ringleader of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, has been identified as one of those killed in Tuesday's raid in the suburb of Saint Denis, the Paris prosecutor says.
His body was found riddled with bullets and shrapnel in the shattered apartment in the northern suburb.
The Belgian national, 28, was identified from his fingerprints.
Friday's gun and suicide bomb attacks in the French capital left 129 people dead and hundreds injured.
Eight people were arrested and at least two killed in the raid on the property in Saint Denis.
Heavily armed police stormed the building after a tip-off that Abaaoud was in Paris.
A woman at the flat - reported in French media to be Abaaoud's cousin - died during the raid after activating a suicide vest.
The prosecutor's office said it was still unclear whether Abaaoud had blown himself up or not.
Investigators are still looking for another suspect, Salah Abdeslam, who is believed to have travelled to Belgium after the attacks on Friday night.
The BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says the identification of Abaaoud raises serious questions for security services.
He was high on French and Belgian wanted lists and yet managed to travel from Syria to the heart of Paris without ever leaving a trace.
Earlier on Thursday, Belgian police raided properties linked to Salah Abdeslam and fellow suspected attacker Bilal Hadfi, who was killed on Friday outside the Stade de France stadium.
Several raids took place in and around Brussels, and one person had been detained, Belgian prosecutors said.
French PM Manuel Valls warned that France could face chemical or biological attack from terror groups, as deputies voted to extend the state of emergency imposed after the attacks for another three months from 26 November.

Health / U.S. Firefighter Gets World's Most Extensive Face Transplant by genuinechimere(m): 11:45am On Nov 17, 2015
A volunteer firefighter from Mississippi whose face was burned off during a home fire rescue received the world's most extensive face transplant, New York University Langone Medical Center said on Monday.

After a 26-hour surgery performed at the New York hospital in August, 41-year-old Patrick Hardison is living with the face of 26-year-old David Rodebaugh, a BMX extreme bicycling enthusiast from Brooklyn who was pronounced brain dead after a cycling accident.

He received a full scalp and face, including ears, nose, lips and upper and lower eyelids.

Now, for the first time since that raging fire in Senatobia, Mississippi in 2001, Hardison can blink and even sleep with his eyes closed - key steps to sparing his blue eyes from blindness that previously seemed all but inevitable, said Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, the plastic surgeon who led the 150-person medical team that performed the procedure.

Simultaneous surgeries took place, Rodriguez said, with Hardison on one operating table while Rodebaugh was on the other. The NYU medical team had practiced for a full year to get it right.

"You only have one chance to land the Rover. The same goes with the face," Rodriguez told Reuters following a news conference in New York earlier on Monday.

The team slit the skin at the back of the donor's head, peeling each side forward with key pieces of bone attached at the chin, nose and cheekbone and then precisely draped it, like Batman's cowl, onto Hardison's head.

"Everything has to be perfectly positioned," Rodriguez told Reuters, including the bones, muscles, ear canals, lips and nerves.

NYU, which will pay for the estimated $1 million surgery, took the case after a firefighter buddy reached out on behalf of Hardison, whose own children were initially terrified of their father's disfigured face.

Proof of the surgery's success was obvious after a medical team took Hardison shopping for new clothes at Macy's this fall, and no one in the store gave him a second look, Rodriguez said.

Rodebaugh's mother, who gave permission for the transplant, noting her son was an unexpected gift after she had been told she could not conceive a child, recently was shown a photograph of the surgical results.

"Patrick is beautiful," she told the medical team.

Hardison in a statement thanked his donor's family, saying, "I hope they see in me the goodness of their decision."

TV/Movies / 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Movie ‘home Alone’ by genuinechimere(m): 11:22am On Nov 17, 2015
Home Alone fans, let out your best aftershave-induced scream: The Christmas comedy celebrates its 25th anniversary today! That’s right, it has been a quarter century since the cheese-pizza-seeking smart aleck Kevin McCallister got left behind while the rest of his family travelled to Paris. This forced our precocious (and surprisingly sadistic) protagonist to defend his family’s palatial pad from a pair of bumbling burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) with an arsenal of homemade booby traps.

Today, no holiday binge-watch is complete without a viewing of the Chris Columbus’ classic. It’s the movie that turned Macaulay Culkin into one of the biggest kid stars of all-time, became the top-grossing live-action comedy in the U.S., and made zip-lining into a treehouse the ultimate childhood dream. To mark this cinematic milestone and the beginning of the It’s Appropriate to Watch Christmas Movies Even Though It’s Not Even Thanksgiving Yet season, here are ten little-known facts about the John Hughes-penned Home Alone to hold you over until the slapstick classic is simultaneously playing on three different channels and you catch yourself calling everyone “filthy animals.” This is it! Don’t get scared now!

1. Macaulay Culkin's iconic scream was improvised.

The image of a yowling Kevin after slapping a stingy splash of cologne to his cheeks remains synonymous with the film’s poster and comedic plot. According to director Chris Columbus’ recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, however, this iconic moment was not written that way in the script. Although Culkin screaming with his palms on cheeks on the movie’s poster is supposedly influenced by Edvard Munch’s painting, “The Scream,” it was apparently just as much a product of Macaulay’s comedic instincts. I guess life does imitate art.

2. Both Pesci and Stern struggled to curb their foul-mouthed tendencies during filming.

With paint cans hitting you in the face and doorknobs branding letters into your hand, it is not surprising if you let out a few of George Carlin’s no-no words. Pesci, a little too used to the profanity parade of his prior flick, Goodfellas, had to reminded that he was on the set of a family film and that dropping the f-bomb was not that chill. To ease Pesci’s difficult transition to the world of PG, Directer Chris Columbus suggested he substitute in the word ‘fridge’ as a compromise. Daniel Stern did not quite get the memo though as one instance of his colorful language made it into the final cut of the film. As Marv is retrieving a lost boot through the ‘doggy door’, he accidentally mutters “s***” and it can still be heard on the DVD version. Skip to 55:27 if you’re interested…

3. Kevin's brother's girlfriend is a dude!

When Kevin stumbles upon a picture of his older brother’s boo, he grimaces and cries, “Buzz, your girlfriend — woof!” As Home Alone actor, Devin Ratray, told Yahoo!, the photo of Buzz’s dog noise inducing girlfriend was actually the art director’s son who volunteered to dress up like a girl for the picture. Chris Columbus deemed it too cruel to laugh (and bark) at a real girl like that. I can’t help but wonder where that kid is now and more importantly, does he cite that as his conversation-starting fun fact?

4. Macaulay Culkin's stunt double was a 30-year-old man.

It might seem obvious now that the filmmakers did not let nine-year-old Macaulay Culkin to sled down the stairs and out of a house, fall through five shelves of toys, zipline 50 feet in the air into a wooden box in a tree, or any of the other highly dangerous stunts this mischief filled movie required. But what is less obvious is that they found a 30-year-old man, named Larry Nicholas, who was roughly the same size as the not yet a decade-old Culkin. So good luck unseeing that the next time you watch this movie.

5. Don't go searching for "Angels With Filthy Souls" on Netflix because it does not exist.

The movie that Kevin pops into the VCR with a label that says Angels With Filthy Souls, the one that successfully scares off pizza boys and robbers alike, is not a real film but rather footage specifically created for Kevin McCallister’s universe. The fake movie scenes were shot on cardboard sets before filming for the rest of Home Alone began. This fictional gangster movie is a play on the classic film Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) starring James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. And just in case it needs to be said, the sequel, Angels With Even Filthier Souls, which is featured in Home Alone 2 is also fake.

6. A French director claimed ‘Home Alone’ was a rip-off of his movie.

French filmmaker Rene Manzor alleged that John Hughes had stolen the idea for Home Alone from his jarring thriller 3615 Code Pere Noel (or Game Over in America) about a kid who defends his home and feeble grandmother from a deranged lunatic dressed as Santa by turning his toys and home appliances into deadly weapons. Manzor tried to reach a settlement with Fox and threatened to sue over the two film’s similarities, which I’m sure went about as well as the whole Taylor Swift “haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate” lawsuit debacle.

7. Kevin's older sister is a world champion in Judo IRL.

Hillary Wolf played snarky older sis Megan McCallister in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York before hanging up her acting towel. But this was no premature bow as Wolf went on to represent the United States as a second-degree black belt in Judo in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. Maybe the McCallister should’ve left her home alone to deal with the Wet Bandits…possible title: Home Alone 6: Karate Kid Hijinks.

8. Kevin's plane ticket can be seen briefly in the trash can after Peter McCallister cleans the counter.

I can finally put to rest the question that has haunted me for years: why wouldn’t the McCallister family notice Kevin’s absence when they presented his airline ticket at the boarding gate? Someone on Reddit posted an animated GIF presenting this cleverly inserted plot-hole defying “easter egg.” During your rewatch, pay extra attention in the beginning of the film when Kevin and Buzz accidentally spill milk over everyone’s plane tickets and passports (around the 9-minute mark). His dad quickly cleans up, tossing the napkins in the trash, and then the camera lingers on the garbage can for an extra second. You probably didn’t think anything of it even as you watched it for the umpteenth time on Christmas. But upon closer inspection, you’ll see Kevin’s plane ticket was tossed away along with a banana peel and a hopefully empty can of Reddi-Whip. If ever there was a proper time to slap your hands on your face and scream, it is now.

9. Pesci bit his finger!

When Harry and Marv manage to outwit that little sadist Kevin, they hang him from his sweater by a coat hook and begin to enact their revenge. Fortunately, “Old Man Marley” and his trusty snow shovel show up just in time to save him. Just before Marv gets a face full of shovel, he starts to bite Kevin’s fingers off “one at a time.” Talking to Contact Music in 2004, Macaulay Culkin whined: “During rehearsal he actually bit me. He broke the skin and everything! I still have the scar. I was like, ‘I don’t care how many Oscars you have, or whatever – don’t go biting a nine-year-old! What the heck’s wrong with you?” To which Pesci undoubtedly said, “Go fridge yourself.”

10. Elvis has not left the building.

Many of those conspiracy theorists who believe that Elvis Presley is still alive maintain that the heavily bearded man standing in the background of the scene where Mrs. McCallister is shouting at the airport desk clerk (just before she meets John Candy) is the King himself. In other words, Elvis who had been dead for thirteen years when Home Alone started filming, decided to be an extra in a children’s Christmas movie in order to troll everyone in the world. If you squint really hard, you might also spot 2Pac.

Can any JW read Luke 24:36-53 and John 20:31? Jesus clearly stated in Luke that Repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in His Name to all Nations. Clearly the JW aren't preaching †ђξ gospel. In John, it was written that by believing in Jesus, we have life in His Name. Jesus also said in that Luke 24:27 that †ђξ scriptures right from †ђξ beginning with Moses and all †ђξ Prophets were written about Him.

gasgenius:
(1) In Zechariah 12:10, Jehovah speaks of the future return of Christ and says, ". . . They shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourne for him, as one mourneth for his only son . . . ." This is spoken again in Revelation 1:7, which is clearly a reference to Christ Himself, but in Zechariah 12:10 GOD said, ". . . They shall look upon me whom they have pierced . . . ." The One that they pierced was Jesus Christ! So, in Zechariah 12:10, God is saying that He is Jesus Christ.
(2) In John 1:1, John 1:14, 1 John 1:1, and in 1 John 5:7, Jesus is called "the Word," and John 1:1 says that "the Word was God."
(3) Thomas referred to Jesus as "My Lord and my God" in John 20:28, and Jesus did not see the need to correct him.
(4) Isaiah 7:14 gives us the prophecy of the Virgin Birth of Christ and states that His name would be "Immanuel." Matthew 1:23 tells us that this word means "God with us."
(5) In Isaiah 9:6, Jesus is called "Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." The Bible certainly would not say this about anyone less than God.
(6) In John 10:30, Jesus says, "I and my Father are one." Jesus is not a lesser god; He is ONE with the Father.
(7) Micah 5:2 tells us that Jesus is "from everlasting."
(cool In John 8:58, Jesus tells the Pharisees, "Before Abraham was, I am."
He claimed to be the "I AM" of Exodus 3:14, which is God Almighty.
(9) Jesus allowed others to worship Him (John 9:38; Matt. 14:33; and Luke 24:52), which was forbidden, unless He was God (Rev. 22:9).
(10) Jesus forgave sins (Mark 2:5), which only God can do (Mark 2:7).
(11) The Lord Jesus Christ is omnipresent (Matt. 18:20; 28:20; II Cor. 13:14; I John 5:7). We know He is God because He is capable of being everywhere at once.
(12) Jesus is omniscient (Mark 11:2-6; Matt. 12:40). He is God because He knows all things.
(13) The Lord Jesus is also omnipotent (Rev. 19:6; Matt. 28:18). He has all power.
(14) According to John 1, 1 John 1, Colossians 1, and Hebrews 1, Jesus Christ is the Creator of Genesis 1!
(15) Jesus never sinned! Romans 3:23 says that ALL HAVE SINNED and come short of the glory of God, but Jesus did not sin (2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Peter 3:18). So Jesus had to be God.
u nailed it.

They offered him their magazines, he gladly took it. but when he offered them Rhapsody of Realities in return, they quickly rejected it. my neighbour smiled at their hypocrisy. not believing in the Deity of Jesus is a great mistake by the JW. Jesus is the Son of God, and also God Himself. I can reel out countless scriptures to prove this. Religion / Rightly Dividing The Word: How To Read Your Bible Without Getting Confused by genuinechimere(m): 5:26pm On Nov 08, 2015
Have you ever been confused by a Bible teaching that seemed contrary to something else in the Bible? Have you ever read a scripture that seemed to contradict another scripture?
Paul said that the entire Bible is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16). But he also said that we need to “rightly divide the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15). We divide the word whenever we emphasize one scripture over another. So how do we divide the word rightly?
In essence there are two questions we should ask when reading any scripture in the Bible: (i) What does this passage mean in light of the finished work of the cross? And (ii) who is the writer writing to or about?
The filter of the cross
To hear some people preach today you might conclude that the cross was of no significance. In truth, Jesus’ death on the cross is the single most important event in human history.
Before the cross the old law covenant reigned. But after the cross a new covenant based on grace made the old covenant obsolete (Heb 8:13). Under the old covenant you were blessed if you were good, but under the new covenant we are blessed because He is good. Consider these contrasts from scripture:
Before the cross we were blessed when we obeyed and cursed when we disobeyed (Deut 11:26-28). But after the cross we are blessed because we are forgiven (Rms 4:08) and we are redeemed from the curse of the law (Gal 3:13).
Before the cross we forgave in order to earn God’s forgiveness (Mt 6:14). But at the cross we were unconditionally forgiven and we now forgive because Christ has forgiven us (Eph 4:32; Col 3:13).
Before the cross loving your neighbor meant not coveting his wife or property (Deut 5:21). But after the cross we love and accept others because Christ loves and accepts us (1 Jn 4:19; Rms 15:7).
Before the cross God was distant and unapproachable (Ex 19:12). But because of the cross we have been brought near to God to receive mercy and find grace (Eph 2:13; Heb 4:16).
Before the cross God held us responsible for our sins and not even sacrifices could clear a guilty conscience (Lev 5:17; Heb 9:9). But because of the cross Jesus’ blood cleanses us from a guilty conscience (Heb 10:22) and He remembers our sins no more (Heb 8:12).
Before the cross God said “Thou shalt not” (Ex 20). But after the cross God says “I will” (Heb 8:8-12). Before the cross it’s “do, do, do”. After the cross it’s “done, done done”.
Before the cross righteousness was demanded of sinful man (Deut 6:25). But at the cross righteousness was freely given (Rms 5:17).
Before the cross Adam’s sin meant condemnation for all men (Rms 5:18). But there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (Rms 8:1).
When we read the Bible we should ask, is this scripture describing the old law covenant which condemns sinners or the new grace covenant which makes sinners righteous? If you are a Christian, you need not fear the condemnation of the law. Instead, rejoice that you are the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor 5:21).
Consider the audience
When reading the Bible it’s also important to note who the words were written for, otherwise you might end up taking someone else’s medicine. There are only two kinds of people – those who put their faith in Jesus and those who don’t. Consequently the Holy Spirit brings two different convictions (Jn 16:8-10):
(i) Jesus said the Holy Spirit would convict the world of guilt for the sin of unbelief (Jn 16:9). Many things in the New Testament are written for unbelievers. Paul, Peter, John, Jude and James all had things to say to those who did not see their need for a Savior (e.g., 1 Jn 1:5-10). The apostles also wrote to warn the church about sinners masquerading as prophets and preachers (e.g., 2 Pet 2). Strong words of judgment and condemnation given to sinners do not apply to those whom Christ has qualified.
(ii) Jesus also said the Holy Spirit would convict Christians of righteousness (Jn 16:10). We do not need to be reminded of our shortcomings, but we often need to be reminded of our right standing before God (2 Cor 5:21). Much of the New Testament was written to assure Christians that we belong to God and that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Rms 8:38-39). Not even our sin can separate us because God’s grace is greater than our sin (Rms 5:15). When we fail the Holy Spirit does not condemn us – there is no condemnation to those in Christ. Rather He reminds us that we are righteous, that we are kept by Jesus (Ju 24), that we are the Father’s sons (Gal 4:6), and that our hope is firm and secure (Heb 6:19). When we make mistakes Jesus doesn’t condemn us, He defends us (1 Jn 2:1) and then He teaches us how to say no to ungodliness (Tit 2:12).
Rightly dividing the word means reading the Bible in the context of the finished work of the cross. It means we interpret scripture in light of what Jesus has done. The entire Bible reveals Jesus (Lk 24:27). Read the Bible to find Jesus.

Religion / Chop Off Your Hand?! Was Jesus Serious? by genuinechimere(m): 5:16pm On Nov 08, 2015
“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” (Mt 5:29-30)
I doubt there’s a Christian alive who hasn’t been troubled by this verse at some point in their lives. It’s one of those things you read that causes you to do a double-take. What?! Did Jesus really say that? Was He serious? I’d better ask the pastor.
I’ll guess the odds are ten to one you came away thinking that Jesus wasn’t being serious. Afterall, Jesus is the kindest person there is. He healed people. Surely He doesn’t want us to go around maiming ourselves. Then you looked around your church and saw that no one had actually chopped off their hands and so you took comfort in the fact that everyone thought the same way as you did. There’s safety in numbers.
No doubt this is an uncomfortable pair of verses. Maybe you don’t think about them that much. But your interpretation of Jesus’ words is extremely important! So let’s cut to the chase with this question: was Jesus being figurative or literal when He made this statement? If you think He was using a figure of speech, how do you know that He wasn’t speaking metaphorically all of the time? Do you just assume that anytime Jesus said something that was tough to swallow that He was speaking figuratively? Or if you think Jesus was being literal, what are you going to do about it? Have you done what He said or have you ignored Him? Hmm. It seems your choice is presumption or disobedience. This is a tricky one. Let’s look more closely at the arguments for each conclusion.
Was Jesus speaking figuratively?
Jesus loved metaphors, especially when describing the kingdom of heaven. “It’s like a mustard seed” and “it’s like a treasure buried in field” and “it’s like a pearl of great price.” Jesus often used word pictures to convey revelation.
I guess the default view is that Jesus is making another metaphor when He tells us to gouge out our eyes and chop off our hands. “Jesus is using strong words to convey something about the seriousness of sin. He’s not really preaching self-mutilation but self-denial. What He means to say is we must be sensitive to sin and renounce it and run from it and do whatever it takes to avoid it.”
Does this sound familiar to you? It should, for this has been the standard interpretation for most of church history. But there are two fatal flaws with this conclusion. First, it assumes that Jesus was exaggerating and Jesus never exaggerated. Preachers sometimes exaggerate to make a point but Jesus always meant what He said and said what He meant. He is Truth personified. It is inconceivable that He would play with words for the crude purpose of ramming home a lesson. When Jesus spoke in parables He did so to conceal truths, not to stretch them (Mt 13:13). In any case, the passage above is not part of a parable. The context is the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus has just been speaking about anger and lust. His language is plain because the issues are serious. There is nothing metaphorical about His choice of words.
The second flaw with this interpretation is that it suggests we can do stuff to save ourselves from hell. Maybe we don’t have to self-amputate, but we can do things like confess, abstain, renounce and what have you. There’s nothing wrong with these things; the error comes in thinking we can save ourselves by doing them. No doubt it is better to enter eternal life handicapped than for your whole body to go to hell. But it does not follow that you can do things to earn eternal life.
Was Jesus speaking literally?
Most people think Jesus was speaking figuratively because they cannot conceive for a second that He meant what He said. But what if He did? Does it then follow that He actually wants us to chop off our hands? Of course not! We are sanctified by the blood of the Lamb, not our severed limbs (Heb 10:29). Self-mutilation does nothing to deal with sin for sin is conceived in the heart not the hand (Mt 5:28). Besides, if you chop one hand off you’re left with another. You can still sin!
So what’s going on here? Why would Jesus tell us to do something He doesn’t really want us to do? He’s doing it so people will realize the absurdity of trying to impress God with their acts of self-righteousness. He’s preaching law on steroids not so that you will try to keep it but so that you will give up pretending you are.
It is hard for some Christians to grasp the idea that Jesus could preach both grace and law without confusing the two, but He did. Jesus is the perfect physician. He knows exactly what medicine you need. If you’re broken and hurting you’ll get grace, but if you’re self-righteous and religious you’ll get law. A self-righteous person is one who thinks he can impress God with his religious performance. The only language he understands is law. He says, “all these commands I have kept from my youth, what else do I lack?” And Jesus responds, “Okay, you asked for it, here it is – receive some more law.”
Why preach the law?
The law is not a standard to live up to, but a mirror that reveals our faults. The law was not given to help you overcome sin, but to help sin overcome you (Rms 7:8-9). In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus was preaching to people who thought they would be judged righteous if they kept the law. But instead of being silenced by their inability to do so, they had watered it down making it easier to keep. In Matthew 23 Jesus gives some specific examples of how the Pharisees had diluted the law, but in Matthew 5 He sets about raising the standard of the law to its proper level. In other words, He was polishing the mirror.
Why did Jesus do this? Why did our gracious king spend so much time preaching the law? Because some people will never appreciate the good news until they’ve heard the bad news, which is this:
“Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 5:20)
The law is holy, righteous and good, but try to live by it and it will condemn and kill you (2 Cor 3:6,9). The purpose of the law is to bring man to the end of himself and reveal his need for a Savior (Gal 3:24). If you are self-righteous, you will never appreciate Jesus until the law has done its job and plowed the pride out of your smug little heart. I’m a decent person, you say. I’ve never killed or committed adultery. Not good enough, says Jesus. God knows your heart. If you’ve entertained murderous or lustful thoughts you’ve as good as done it. You’re in danger of hell-fire. This is a serious business, says Jesus. If you persist in this pathetic course of self-reliance, you had better be prepared to go the whole way even if that means sacrificing an eye and a hand. (Paul says something similar in Galatians 5:12.)
And knowing there would be some religious wackos out there who might miss the point and actually go to such extremes, Jesus hits them with this:
“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt 5:48)
God expects perfection and nothing less. If you’re not perfect, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you’re in serious trouble. Now here’s the good news:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Mt 5:17)
Jesus fulfilled all of the requirements of the law on your behalf. You are not perfect, but thank God you have a perfect high priest!
“Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.” (Heb 7:25-26)
Why did Jesus make such a big deal about the law in Matthew 5? He did it to prepare our hearts for the good news of God’s grace. Jesus is saying you can either trust your own law-keeping performance or you can trust His. But what you can’t do is dilute the law to some standard lower than perfection and think that impresses God.
Jesus wasn’t foolin’
Jesus was born under the law and fulfilled the law to redeem those under the law so that we might receive the full rights of sons (Gal 4:4-5). Because of what Jesus has done we are no longer under the law but the grace of God (Rms 6:5). The good news is that His righteousness far surpasses the righteousness of the Pharisees and He offers it to you as a free gift (Rm 1:17).
To the answer the question at the top of this post – was Jesus serious? – yes, He was deadly serious! He was so serious that He suffered and died to redeem you from the curse of the law that He himself preached. So the next time someone tells you that Jesus was playing with words, that He didn’t really mean what He said, don’t let them get away with it. Don’t let them water down His words to suit their own religious performance. Jesus was not exaggerating to make a point. Neither was He using fear to motivate us to pursue dead works of religion. He was telling us that God expects nothing short of perfection and that He – Jesus – is the only hope we have.

Religion / Faith Is A Rest by genuinechimere(m): 4:27pm On Nov 08, 2015
The gospel declares God’s grace comes to us through faith. So if you wanted to undermine the gospel, there are two ways you could do it:
1. attack grace – put price tags on it or obscure it by referring to grace as a “doctrine”
2. attack faith – either make it a work or diminish it, belittle it
I usually talk about grace but today I want to talk about faith because grace without faith is worthless:
For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. (Heb 4:2)
The gospel is true whether you believe it or not but it won’t benefit you unless you believe it. For instance, if you don’t believe Jesus has forgiven you, you won’t walk in his forgiveness. And if you don’t believe that in Christ you are already holy and acceptable, you will feel pressure to make yourself holy and acceptable.
Faith does not compel God to forgive us or sanctify us. Faith doesn’t make God do anything. Rather, faith is a positive response to what God has done. Faith is acknowledging every good thing that is already ours in Christ (2 Pet 1:3).
Faith doesn’t make things real that weren’t real to begin with, but faith makes them real to you. For instance, if you battle with guilt and condemnation, you don’t need Jesus to come and take away your sin. You need to believe he already did. Jesus is the cure for guilt, but until you believe it, you won’t be cured.
Faith is a noun
Why am I saying this? Because there is a teaching going around that says, “Everyone is saved whether they believe it or not.” Never mind that the apostles preached, “Believe and be saved” (Acts 16:31, Rom 10:9). Suddenly, encouraging people to “repent and believe the good news,” as Jesus did, is politically incorrect. It’s discrimination. It’s putting barrier gates in front of the kingdom.
Perhaps you’ve heard this: “Believing is a work and grace and works don’t mix.” What a strange thing to say. It’s like saying “grace and faith don’t mix” or “grace comes through unbelief.” I wouldn’t waste your time with this but I’m hearing this a lot. Maybe you are too. So how do we respond? What does the Bible say?
Now we who have believed enter that rest…. (Heb 4:3)
Faith is not work, faith is a rest. Faith is a noun, not a verb. Faith is a persuasion that God is who he says he is, has done what he said he’s done, and will do what he has promised to do. Consider Abraham, who…
…did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (Rom 4:20-21)
Faith is being fully persuaded. When you are fully persuaded, you can rest. The issue is settled. Your mind is made up and your heart is at ease.
We are creatures of persuasion. We are designed to operate from our convictions. Either you will be convinced that Jesus is true or you won’t be. If you’re not convinced, you will waver and stagger in indecision but don’t panic, for the Holy Spirit will be right there to convince you about Jesus so you can be persuaded and enter his rest. This is what the Holy Spirit does – he points us to the Prince of Peace so that we may find peace for our weary souls.
Unbelief is a work
When you have seen the beauty of Jesus, faith comes easily. Unbelief is the harder choice. To fold your arms and lock your jaw as the goodness of God assails you from every direction requires real commitment.
Unbelief is not passive ignorance. Unbelief is hardening your heart to the manifest goodness of God. Unbelief is cursing that which God has blessed and hating that which he loves. Unbelief is resisting the Holy Spirit and clinging to worthless idols (Acts 7:51, 14:15, 19:9).
I am not talking about people who haven’t heard the gospel. I’m talking about those who encountered the love and grace of God and have rejected it. Instead of opening the door to the One who knocks (easy), they’ve locked it, pushed the chairs and table up against it, and shuttered the windows (hard). Instead of reclining at the table of his abundance (easy), they’re scrounging for food in the pig pen (hard).
Look at how unbelief is described in the New Testament and you will find plenty of verbs or action words. Unbelief is rejecting Jesus (John 3:36) and denying the Lord (Jude 1:4). It’s thrusting away the word of God and judging yourself unworthy of life (Acts 13:46). It’s suppressing the truth (Rom 1:18) and delighting in wickedness (2 Th 2:12). It’s turning away (Heb 12:25), going astray (2 Pet 2:15), and trampling the Son of God underfoot (Heb 10:29).
And how does Jesus describe unbelievers? As evildoers and workers of iniquity (Mat 7:23).
Do you see? It takes hard work to succeed as an unbeliever. You need to apply yourself with religious dedication. It’s a life-time commitment with no days off. You cannot afford to drop your guard even for a moment or Jesus might sneak up and hug you. If faith is a rest, unbelief is restlessness:
And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. (Heb 3:18-19, KJV)
Faith is a gift
There are two ways to get this faith-thing wrong. Tell people they must work to prove their faith or tell them they need no faith at all. The first is the message of graceless religion, the second is the message of faithless philosophy. In contrast to both, the gospel declares you need faith and God will provide it. Indeed, the good news of Jesus comes wrapped in faith (Rom 10:17). Unwrap the gift of grace and you are left with faith lying all over the place.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Mat 11:29-30)
In a world of heavy burdens, Grace comes offering rest. Unbelief says, “Leave me alone, I’m busy.” But faith responds, “Rest, you say? I’ll have some of that, thank you very much!”
For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest (Heb 4:10-11)
Grace declares, “It is finished, the work is done,” and faith responds, “Thank you, Jesus!”
The gospel is not an invitation to pick up tools, but to drop them. It’s not a job advertisement, it’s a day of rest.
Faith is not something you must do or manufacture. Faith is resting in the restful persuasion that God is at rest and in him so are we.
