Science/Technology / Hotel In Japan Operated Entirely By Robots by genuinechimere(m): 8:47am On Nov 04, 2015
No need to tip the staff at this hotel.

Japan opened the first hotel that is entirely staffed by androids. The hotel is named "Henn na," which is Japanese for strange hotel.

The two-story hotel opened July 17 and it is situated at the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo, Japan.

Robots at the hotel provide porter service, room cleaning and front desk management. The creators of the hotel said the robots will reduce costs and ensure comfort.

"We will make the most efficient hotel in the world," Hideo Sawada, company president, said during a press conference. "In the future, we'd like to have more than 90 percent of hotel services operated by robots."
The hotel also have facial recognition, which will allow hotel guests to enter their rooms without a key.

Hotel rooms cost 7,000 yen a night, which roughly translates to $59. A twin room will cost 9,000 yen ($76).

The first complex opened in July have 72 rooms. The second complex will be completed by next year and will also have 72 rooms. If the hotel reaches maximum capacity they will bid off rooms, but the upper limit will be 14,000 yen.

Japan is not the only country opening theme parks and hotels with cutting edge technology. South Korea is will reportedly open the world's first theme park devoted entirely to robotics and artificial intelligence. The theme park will be called Robot Land and it's set to open in 2016.

naijaguy77:

Are you sick? Since when did Oron people become Ibibio? And since when did Oro language or even Efik language become an Ibibio dialect?

Just consider the following facts:

1) Oro people speak oro language, they also generally understand Efik language but only because the bible was first translated into Efik, so the missionaries used Efik to spread the gospel. Even in the most rural parts of Oro, people can understand efik, but ibibio is some irritating sound that no one relates to.

2) Ibibio is a dialect of Efik, not the other way around. Efik is the main language, it is understood by everyone, Efiks, Oros, Ibibios, Anangs, etc. The Efik bible is what is used from Ikot Ekpene to Ikot Ansa, so I wonder which alternate universe you live in where Ibibio is a language and Efik is a dialect?

3) What are the characteristics of a language, as opposed to a dialect? Efik is studied in university, Efik has poetry and artistic music from Inyang Nta Henshaw to Peter Effiom, plays and playwrights, literary luminaries, Professors of Efik language such as E.N. Amaku, Efik alphabets and etymology. Jesus, what is ibibio? Ibibio is a barbaric dialect of the efik language.

Comparing Efik and Ibibio is like comparing Queens Engligh to Pidgin English, just because more idiots speak pidgin English doesn't make it the language, it is still the sub-language/dialect of proper English.

Maybe becuase you have started getting some oil money (which you don't even produce a drop of oil, oil is produced by Oros, Ibenos, and Obolos) and you are no longer houseboy and housegirl, you think you can come on nairaland and denigrate other people's culture and language? You better think again.

The Ibibios, up until recently, have been something of 2nd class citizens in that region. Because they live in the hinterland (despite being in a predominantly Riverine/coastal region) , they had the following misfortunes:

1) The Efiks and Oros are coastal people and their main commodity during the slave trade era were ibibios. They sold ibibios to Europe slave traders and this led to the generally perception of the ibibios as inferior. Since they had no access to the coast and were mere commodity.

2) During the colonial and missionary era, the Europeans first settled in the coast - Lagos, Calabar, Oron etc. Because of this, Education and Administrative generally went to people from the coastal regions, hence the reason why you find the oldest schools in these areas - Hope Waddell Training Institute Calabar, Methodist Boys High School Oron, St. Patrick's College Calabar, Kings College Lagos, etc. Because of this, the ibibios had no access to Education until the late 20th century. This naturally placed them at a disadvantage to the Efiks and Oros, who are coastal people and had earlier interaction with Europeans, embraced western education early, etc.

Today, you see jokers come on the internet to proclaim a barbaric dialect as a language. Can you tell us even one seminal work done in the ibibio dialect? None. You think a sound is considered a language because it is chanted by numerous monkeys?

What a joke.

The main language of the Lower Cross River Basin is EFIK. The dialects of Efik include Ibibio and Anang. Some related languages to Efik are Oro and Ibeno.
u nailed it.
Culture / Re: The Dialects Of Ibibio And Where They Are Spoken by genuinechimere(m): 6:38pm On Nov 02, 2015
IMO. I don't see any difference between Efik and Ibibio. It's just like people from Anambra and Umuahia, speaking different dialects of igbo. Efik is lighter than Ibibio.
Science/Technology / International Space Station Anniversary: 15 Secrets Of Living Outside Of Earth by genuinechimere(m): 5:38pm On Nov 02, 2015
Fifteen years ago today, a select group of astronauts began what would be the first of many missions at the International Space Station, conducting experiments, space walks and showing the world just how cool it looks to live in microgravity.

"When I first saw the station I thought, 'Oh my word, it's huge.' It looked so majestic," astronaut Doug Wheelock, who has visited the station twice and has spent months living there, told ABC News. "The outside is kind of a stark metallic. It's like a castle in the sky."

Retired astronaut Clayton Anderson, who chronicled his two trips to the space station and the months he spent living there in the book "The Ordinary Spaceman," joined Wheelock in sharing with ABC News 15 secrets about what life is really like at the International Space Station.

Alone Time

When you live and work at your office and can't exactly go anywhere else, alone time is crucial.

"We each have a crew quarters about the size of a phone booth and you can go there to relax and sleep, email and listen to music and get your wits about you," Wheelock said.

Hobbies

Having a hobby helps, too. Wheelock said he kept a journal and wrote poetry. Anderson played the keyboard and wrote music.

What's That Smell?

The sterile environment of space has a funny smell.

"Your sense of smell is a little bit dulled," he said. "Everything smells sort of like the exhaust on a computer or TV. ... That plastic burning smell."

Condiments Are 'Gold'

Space cuisine just doesn't compare to the pizza, barbecue and hot wings back on Earth, but condiments can help kick a meal up a notch.

"They did have little packets of condiments that were like gold," Wheelock said. "I remember a squeeze bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar and I added that to my food and it brought that flavor back."

Two other staples, salt and pepper, come in liquid form, Wheelock said, because otherwise the grains could float into an astronaut's eyes as they're sitting down for a meal.

Pre-Position Your Toilet Paper

Seriously.

"It's important to minimize the disruption of the bathroom experience because toilet paper doesn't hang on the wall like it does on Earth," Anderson said. "It doesn’t roll off that cardboard tube."

Drinking Water

Some people don't mind the recycled water at the International Space Station, which Wheelock said has little taste to it. Anderson said he didn't like drinking plain water, so he added coffee, tea or Tang to give it a boost of flavor.

Fresh Fruit

Every time a cargo resupply mission arrived, fresh fruit and vegetables would be at the top of the load, Wheelock said. He ate an orange and enjoyed the aroma in the otherwise sterile space environment. He also remembered having a very new appreciation for a fresh apple he was given.

"I felt like Tom Hanks in the movie 'Castaway,' with the volleyball," he said of the movie, in which Hanks plays a man stranded on an island with a volleyball named Wilson as his only friend. "I kept that Apple for two or three weeks."

Best Photo Spot

When Anderson was at the ISS, he said the best window for taking photos was in the Russian module. Now, the best spot is at the cupola observational module, the dome-shaped lookout that was launched to the ISS in 2010.

Noises

The isolation of space has some astronauts missing the little noises on Earth that are easy to take for granted.

"The things I missed the most were sounds of birds singing, children playing, the rain," Wheelock said.

Know You're Human

Mistakes will happen, Wheelock said.

"I knew I would make mistakes because I'm a human, so I said, 'I just hope mine are little ones.' You feel that weightiness as well. NASA has put a lot of money into you and people are looking up to you to get the job done and you want to do it with style and grace and be a team player and a hard worker," he said.

Group Bonding

With the Russians living and working in their own module, it was possible to go an entire day without seeing cosmonaut colleagues, Wheelock said. His solution for bringing everyone together: Crew dinners every night.

"We had an agreement -- each day, breakfast and lunch were on your own," he said, "But we would have dinner together every night. Sometimes we’d go to Russia for dinner, sometimes the U.S. [area]."

Celebrate

With astronauts spending months at the space station, plenty of birthdays and holidays are celebrated. Anderson said he was even to pull off a video surprise for his wife's birthday. Using some balloons that were left behind at the station, he said he surprised his wife on a video feed as she was giving a tour at the Johnson Space Center.

"I played our love song from when we dated," he said. "I set the bar pretty high for males across the country."

Bad Days

"Over the course of six months, you do experience people having harder days than others and sometimes it may be bad or sad news from Earth or frustration with some task or someone ticks someone off," Wheelock said. "As the commander, I was sort of hyper-sensitive to watching everybody and keeping a close eye on how they responded to each other. It is a real exercise in developing and nurturing and encouraging a team effort.”

Take Care of Each Other

Astronauts spend as long as two years training together before a mission, but space can be an isolating experience. Wheelock said everyone would try to look out for their colleagues and rally around them if they were having a tough day.

Enjoy It

Wheelock and Anderson both have great memories about their time spent in space and know they're some of the lucky few who truly know what it's like to live and work at the International Space Station.

"To see this piece of engineering artwork is quite amazing," Wheelock said. "It really sets in right away -- the feeling that you're on borrowed time there."

Sports / Chelsea Boss Jose Mourinho Facing Eva Carneiro Legal Action by genuinechimere(m): 5:13pm On Nov 02, 2015
Jose Mourinho is to be the subject of individual legal action from former Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro.
It means the Chelsea boss will have to appear at an employment tribunal unless there is an out of court settlement.
Carneiro was dropped from first-team duties after Mourinho said she was "naive" for treating Eden Hazard during a draw with Swansea.
Her lawyers are already suing the club for constructive dismissal.
The legal papers are expected to be served on Mourinho this week as part of separate, but connected, claims against him and against the club.
The doctor's lawyers said neither she nor they could comment as the legal proceedings are active, while Chelsea have also not commented on the case.
The individual legal claim against Mourinho of victimisation and discrimination means Carneiro's lawyers are alleging he was instrumental in Carneiro's apparent demotion.
The incident in question occurred on 8 August, the opening day of the Premier League season, when Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn were called on to the pitch during Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Swansea to treat midfielder Hazard.
Chelsea were already down to 10 men after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off, and with Hazard having to leave the field after being treated despite appearing not to be badly injured, the team were temporarily reduced to nine men.
Mourinho was widely criticised for his comments but was cleared of using discriminatory language by the Football Association.
Carneiro revealed she had not been spoken to personally during the investigation, nor asked to provide any statement, however, the FA said she was given an opportunity.
The handling of the case has also been criticised by the Women in Football network group and FA independent director Heather Rabbatts.
The FA's chief executive Martin Glenn and head of governance Darren Bailey are to be questioned about the handling of the case by the governing body's Inclusion Advisory Board later this month.
The IAB's chair Heather Rabbatts is also under investigation by the FA for her comments.
Mourinho has come under increasing pressure on the pitch this season, with the reigning champions 15th in the Premier League table having lost six out of 11 matches.

Business / U.S. To Sell 58 Million Barrels From Strategic Oil Reserve by genuinechimere(m): 5:06pm On Oct 27, 2015
The United States plans to sell 58 million barrels of crude oil from its strategic petroleum reserve between 2018 and 2025 under a budget deal reached on Monday by the White House and lawmakers from both parties, Bloomberg reported.

The proposed sale, which represents more than 8 percent of the 695 million barrels of U.S. strategic reserves, are due to start in 2018 at an annual rate of 5 million barrels and rising to 10 million by 2023, Bloomberg said.

The proceeds from the sale will be "deposited into the general fund of the treasury," Bloomberg said, citing a bill posted on the White House website.

The United States may also sell an additional 45 million barrels to cover a $2 billion (1 billion pound) programme from 2017 to 2020 to modernise its strategic reserve, including building new pipelines, Bloomberg said.

In all, the sales, if completed, would represent about 15 percent of U.S. strategic reserves and comes as countries such as China and India build their own strategic oil reserves amid a steep drop in global crude prices.

Politics / The US Just Challenged China In The South China Sea And… Nothing Happened by genuinechimere(m): 12:04pm On Oct 27, 2015
The United States sent a warship through disputed waters claimed by several countries, but which China considers entirely its own territory, and had pledged to defend. The USS Lassen, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of an island built on the Subi reef in the Spratly islands, a US defense official told USA Today.
China has transformed once submerged reefs in disputed waters in the South China Sea into islands that it claims as its own territory. Because the USS Lassen passed within 12 nautical miles of the man-made islands, the distance international maritime laws define as an island’s sovereign waters, the move essentially demonstrates that the US does not respect these claims.
Before the ship sailed near the Subi reef, Beijing warned the US not to undertake what it would view as provocative acts. “We advise the US to think again and before acting, not act blindly or make trouble out of nothing,” said China foreign minister Wang Yi, according to Reuters. US-based China experts pointed to the possible need for “escalation control,” saying the US could be met by the Chinese navy.

Instead, though, the USS Lassen moved through the area without incident. Asked about the situation, Zhu Haiquan, a spokesman at the Chinese embassy in Washington, told the Associated Press that China respects freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. But, he stressed, “freedom of navigation and overflight should not be used as excuse to flex muscle and undermine other countries’ sovereignty and security.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said later on Tuesday that USS Lassen had been monitored, followed, and warned, and urged the US to “not take any dangerous or provocative acts that threaten China’s sovereignty and security interests.”
For the past two years, China has been on a building spree in the disputed territory, essentially willing islands into existence by dredging sand from the sea floor and piling it atop submerged reefs.
Then it has topped them with helicopter and airplane landing strips, and fortified buildings, including atop the Subi reef:
China’s explanations for the activity have varied from “providing better weather forecasts” to “better service” for the international ships sailing through the waters to “being bullied” by neighbors into the building. But the claims have been disputed by its neighbors and questioned by the US.

Controversy in the South China Sea dates back to China’s establishment of the nine-dash line at the end of World War Two, which claims most of the busy waterway for China. Vietnam and the Philippines also have competing claims in the area of the Spratly Islands.
The nine-dash line, China now insists, has always been the outer line of China’s territorial waters. But historical maps from China show Hainan Island as China’s southern territory. Old maps, though, don’t carry much weight in the current territorial dispute, maritime experts say.
Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines have also occupied some of the Spratly’s 200 land features, and the US Navy has called for all nations to halt militarization of the important shipping conduit.
Today’s showdown-that-wasn’t is reminiscent of an earlier US challenge to China’s claims in the South China Sea. Chinese air force officials warned that planes that violated the country’s new “air defense identification zone” in the South China Sea could be shot down when it was established two years ago. But after the US flew two B-52 bombers through the area, China’s issued a terse statement, but no rebuke and no military action.

Health / Beer Vs Wine: Which Is Better? by genuinechimere(m): 11:43am On Oct 27, 2015
From health benefits to hangovers, there are some important differences between hop and grape that only science can explain.

Few drinks (save tea or coffee) divide the world so spectacularly as beer or wine. There’s no accounting for taste, of course – but there are subtle differences in the way they affect your body and determine your health. Is one more fattening than another? How do their heart benefits compare? And which gives the worse hangover?

Which gets you drunk more quickly?

A pint of lager and a medium glass of wine both contain around the same alcohol content – two or three British units (16-24g). However, your descent into inebriation relies on that alcohol passing into your blood stream – and the speed at which this happens can depend on the type of drink.

Mack Mitchell at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre recently asked a group of 15 men to imbibe different drinks on different days. He made sure that the alcohol content was precisely matched to their body weight – and ensured they drank the alcohol at precisely the same rate, over a 20 minute period. Unsurprisingly, spirits entered the blood stream quickest, leading to the highest peak in blood alcohol content – followed by wine (reaching a peak 54 minutes after drinking) and then beer (which peaked 62 minutes after the drink was finished). In other words, a glass of wine will go to your head more quickly than a pint of beer.

Verdict: Beer is less likely to lead to embarrassment

Which gives you the biggest paunch?

At face value, the myth of the beer belly should be true. Alcohol itself contains calories, not to mention all the sugars that make our favourite drinks so tasty. And at around 180 calories, a pint of beer has 50% more energy content than a small glass of wine – enough to cause you to pile on the pounds.
For moderate drinkers, however, the differences seem to be minimal. A recent review of studies concluded that neither wine nor beer drinkers tend to put on weight over the short-term. The authors noted, however, that the longest study had lasted just 10 weeks. The studies could have missed minor weight gain – and even 1kg (2.2lbs) over that period would eventually add up to a beer belly weighing 25kg (55lbs) over five years. That’s the equivalent to carrying 10 full-term babies.
(On the plus side, the commonly held view that beer may cause men to develop breasts is almost certainly an unfounded myth.)

Verdict: Slim differences, but wine may have the edge

Which gives the worst hangover?

Despite their best efforts, scientists have yet to conquer the drinker’s most formidable foe: the hangover. We don’t even fully understand what causes it. Dehydration is likely to be an important factor (alcohol makes us pee more liquid than we take in) but it may also be caused by some of the byproducts of fermentation. Called congeners, these organic molecules give each drink its unique flavour and aroma, but they may also be toxic to the body, resulting in the throbbing head and nausea that usually follows a night of excess.
In general, darker drinks are thought to contain more congeners. In fact, the evidence so far is ambiguous. Although certain dark spirits like bourbon do seem to produce a worse hangover than crystal clear vodka, different types of beer and wine so far seem to be equal. So provided you haven’t turned to the hard stuff, you can’t blame your choice of drink for your agony.

Verdict: Too ambiguous to call

Which is better (or worse) for my health?

We are often told that a glass of wine a day could help rejuvenate the body, reducing our risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. This life-giving sustenance is thought to come from “polyphenols” (found especially in red wine) that soothe inflammation and mop up damaging chemicals in the body.
Beer is conspicuously absent from these health bulletins, but it too contains a fair share of polyphenols, and seems to offer modest benefits, akin to white wine but less than red wine. Clearly, none of this gives you a free pass to binge drink, but if drank in moderation, a glass a day really may keep the doctor away.

Verdict: Red wine wins hands down, but beer may be better than no drink at all

Overall verdict: When it comes to health benefits, wine edges it as the best medicine. However, beer drinkers can at least respond that their drink has the more illustrious history. In fact, some anthropologists have suggested that our taste for beer might have planted the seeds of agriculture, and therefore civilisation itself. That’s something to contemplate the next time you’re waiting at the bar.

Travel / Sky Taxis Are About To Become A Reality by genuinechimere(m): 5:41pm On Oct 26, 2015
Sick of dealing with the daily traffic congestion on the road? Soon you may not have to.

SkyTran's sky taxis are making their debut.

The aerial mass transit system features "cars" that magnetically glide 20 to 30 feet above the ground along elevated tracks.
Skytran, based in Mountain View, California, has been developing the system for five years. The pilot project will debut in Tel Aviv at the end of October.
The system will run for about 900 feet on the campus of Israel Aerospace Industries, which partnered with SkyTran to develop the cars.
Initially, just one car will run on the track. The car, which can hold up to four people, can travel as fast as 60mph. SkyTran hopes to eventually add several more cars to its debut system.
If all goes well, the company expects to expand to at least three other Israeli cities and some U.S. cities by 2018.
An overhead mode of transport is cheaper and simpler to build than railroads and subways -- and it's also more environmentally friendly, said Jerry Sanders, CEO of SkyTran.
"It's why we think it's important for the public transportation system," he said, adding that underground systems can cost anywhere between $100 million and $2 billion a kilometer.
"Surface systems are expensive and eat up a lot of energy with their big infrastructure and carbon footprint," he said."
SkyTran, meanwhile, costs about $8 million a kilometer, and the cars cost between $25,000 and $30,000 each. "It also uses one-third the energy of a hybrid car," said Sanders.
Compared to the cost of maintaining and expanding existing mass transit systems, Sanders said SkyTran is a bargain for cities.
SkyTran's system is made from steel and aluminum. Sanders says the entire system can be assembled and installed in just a matter of days.
The system uses magnetic levitation technology to move the cars. In other words, electromagnets produce the lift and force to propel the cars forward, which makes the system energy efficient.
This technology is especially beneficial in countries where electricity isn't reliable.
Several U.S. cities have expressed interest in SkyTran's systems, said Sanders, including Baltimore and Inglewood, California. SkyTran hopes to begin building its system in Baltimore next year.
"Either one of those two cities could have our next pilot systems soon," he said, adding that major airports like Paris' Charles de Gaulle are also considering it.
Google (GOOG) chairman Eric Schmidt's venture fund Innovation Endeavors also made a multimillion-dollar seed investment in SkyTran. (Sanders declined to disclose the exact amount).
This, he hopes, will legitimize SkyTran's system as a credible transportation system of the future.

The online ad offered 368 junior posts for employees who tidy up, bring tea to officials or act as night guards. The monthly starting salary is $240 (about 15,600 rupees), which is above the World Bank estimate of India’s average per-capita monthly income of 8,785 rupees ($135).
We had not anticipated the situation.
The online application called for candidates between 18 and 40-years-old, with at least five years of schooling and the ability to ride a bicycle. More than 250 applicants held doctorates degrees and 25,000 held a master’s, reported the FT.
Although the national unemployment rate in India is below 5%, job openings remain few and far between, in large part because of India’s dense population and restrictive system of labour laws, according to the story. Government jobs hold a higher status in India’s society than private sector work. Plus, they pay well and offer long-term stability, Raghuram Rajan, central bank governor, told the FT.
Prabhat Mittal, administrative secretary for the state government, told the FT, “We had not anticipated the situation. In 2006, for about 260 jobs we received 100,000 applications. But in nine years, the figure has gone up so much.”
Of course, you won’t likely find yourself competing against 2 million people for a job, but standing out is tough in the labour market in many parts of the world. However, there are ways to make your resume and CV stand out. For starters, apply for jobs which fit well with your skills and experience. Try to make your CV a narrative of your professional life, rather than a generic laundry list. Tailor each resume or CV toward the specific job and company to which you are applying to appear knowledgeable and genuinely interested.
