EducationNasarawa Student Dies After Eating Apple by georgecso(op): 9:06am On Jul 23, 2013
Pandemonium broke out at the privately owned Hill College of Education, Gwanje, in Akwanga of Nasarawa State after a male student died from suspected poisoning, Daily Trust learnt. Reuben Elijah, a final year student of Economics and Political Science, was said to have been found dead in his room.

Family members and friends of the deceased had rushed him to the General Hospital where he was confirmed to be poisoned, some of them told newsmen yesterday.
They alleged that the deceased ate an apple believed to have been poisoned by his girl friend of the same class.
Persons spoken to on phone told newsmen that the deceased and his girlfriend had a misunderstanding after he informed her of his family’s decision to withdraw from marriage arrangements between them because she is believed to be older than her fiancé.
They alleged that she bought apple for her boyfriend, after they managed to settle their misunderstanding.
They also explained that the said lady, who is also a working class, had invested in the planned marriage and had gone ahead to purchase a motorcycle for his boyfriend.
Acting Registrar of the school, Pastor John Amodu did not confirm nor deny the incident in his school, when he spoke to newsmen on phone.
PoliticsFive Governors To Meet IBB, Abdulsalami Today by georgecso(op): 2:12pm On Jul 22, 2013
Five governors will be visiting Minna, the Niger state capital today for a meeting with the two former heads of state Gen Ibrahim Babangida and Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, Daily Trust has learnt.

Four governors, Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso (Kano) and Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto), visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abekuta on Saturday.
Today they are expected to team up with their host governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu to meet with Generals Babangida and Abdulsalami.
Niger State government spokesman Danladi Ndayebo confirmed that some governors will be visiting the state but did not give details or the purpose of the visit.
But a source that follows events on the national political scene said the visit is not unconnected with plans about 2015 general elections.
President Goodluck Jonathan himself visited former President Obasanjo in Abeokuta weekend. His visit is seen as an effort to mend fences with former leader who has for long kept away from party and government activities.
The four governors also visited Obasanjo same day. Their visit came minutes apart with that of Mr. Jonathan, but they took pains to avoid each other even though they belong to the same ruling party.
Man governors in the ruling PDP want to stop President Jonathan from running again in the election insisting he must abide by an agreement he had signed in 2011 not to stand for election this time around.
The President’s aides, however, have insisted no such agreement exists. The President himself last year said he would announce in 2014 whether or not he will run for reelection.

PoliticsNigerian Lawmakers Top World Salary Chart by georgecso(op): 2:02pm On Jul 22, 2013
*Nigerian Lawmakers Top World Salary Chart*
...Higher Than MPs in US, UK, S/Africa, Brazil, Japan

A Nigerian legislator receives an annual salary of about $189,000, equivalent of N30 million, which is 116 times the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) per person, says the publication which was posted on the magazine’s website on Friday.

The figures put salaries collected by Nigerian senators and members of the House of Representatives way ahead of those received by fellow parliamentarians in the 29 countries whose data was analysed by the Economist....

While the salary of a Nigerian lawmaker is 116 times the country’s GDP per person, that of a British member of parliament is just 2.7 times.

...only Australian lawmakers, with $201,200 annual salary, receive higher amounts compared to Nigerian legislators, but their salaries are only 3 times their country’s GDP per person.

*What is your take on this?
*Is the lawmaker's earning justified given ‪#‎Nigeria‬'s economic situation?
*Should this amount be reviewed?

Foreign AffairsBREAKING NEWS: Prince William’s Wife Catherine is in labour (Pix) by georgecso(op):
The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to hospital and is in the early stages of labour, Kensington Palace has said.

She travelled by car from the palace to St Mary's in Paddington, west London, with her husband the Duke of Cambridge.

The couple do not know the gender of their first child, who will be third in line to the throne.

The BBC's Nick Witchell said there was likely to be no more news until the official announcement of the birth.

The world's press have been camped outside St Mary's for days in anticipation of the birth. The due date had never been officially announced but had widely been expected to be mid-July.

Royal vehicles were seen at a back entrance to the hospital at about 06:00 BST.

Nicholas Witchell read out the statement from Kensington Palace

It is believed the next time the couple will be seen in public is when they appear on the steps of the hospital with their baby.

The duchess is being tended by a top medical team led by the Queen's former gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, who delivered the Countess of Wessex's two children.

Assisting him is Alan Farthing, the former fiance of murdered TV presenter Jill Dando and the Queen's current gynaecologist.

The Duke of Cambridge has been with his wife on annual leave and will have two weeks' paternity leave.

Under new laws to succession the baby will remain third in line to the throne regardless of gender.

Catherine's final public appearance before the birth was at the Trooping the Colour ceremony in June.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were married at Westminster Abbey in April 2011, watched on television by millions of people around the world.

Christianity EtcAntichrist Church In Nig: Animals Sacrificed, Visitors Served With Alcohol(pix) by georgecso(op): 9:38am On Jul 20, 2013
ABEOKUTA-Anti-christ Church Where Animals Are Killed For Sacrifice and Visitors Served With Alcohol Discovered In Ogun State, Nigeria

Welcome to a weird church where animals are freely slaughtered for sacrifice. As you step into this place of worship, you are confronted with the sight of a spot on the right that will make you conclude that you may have strayed into a slaughterhouse.

Even though insinuations of a slaughterhouse stick out starkly and grisly, this is by no means an abattoir. There is neither buying and selling of meat in this worship centre called As God Said, It Must Done, The Temple of The Most High God.

An evangelist at the church explained that the spot is called the ‘Earth Altar’ and that it’s where different types of sacrifices are offered unto God.

Located on a street named after it, Off Fakunle Street, Oke-Aro in Ogun State, a suburb near Lagos, the church is neither Pentecostal nor orthodox. All the same, both the shepherd and the sheep are strongly convinced that they are serving the living God the right way.

This reporter gathered that the blood splattered all over the ‘Earth Altar’ is that of animals. Similarly, in sharp dissonance, the mode of worship verges on the oddity, just as members cling on to what many people will consider unusual beliefs and teachings of the church.

As your curiosity wanders untrammeled at the multihued sight of the church and the strangeness of its name, you meet Prophet Blessed Dike, the general overseer and self-styled seer.

He tells you with celestial audacity that God revealed the name of the church to him while in a trance. “While I was praying God gave me the name of this church from the Book of Isaiah 46 verse 11”, he said.

A probing by this reporter further revealed that besides the ‘Earth Altar’, the church also has a place called the ‘Holy of Holies.’ A worker in the church, Mr. Isaiah Anyaehie explains that the ‘Holy of Holies’ was put up as a replica of the ark of God built by Moses in the Old Testament.

Like the pool of Bethesda in the Bible, members believe that anytime you are sick and you climb into the ‘Holy of Holies’, you would instantly receive your healing.

Here, members show forth when they also want to receive forgiveness of sins and other requests from God. “We have access to the ‘Holy of Holies’ anytime there is a special programme in the church. When you ascend into the ‘Holy of Holies’, you would be healed of whatever ailment you have and whatever you ask God for, He would do it for you,” another member said.

While you are still wondering why the entire premises is painted in red and white, the self-styled seer tells you that white symbolizes peace while red is totemic as it blots out sins.

“God used the blood to wipe out the sins of Adam and Eve. We offer sacrifices because that is what God commands. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and other great men in the Bible offered sacrifices,” he said.

A female member of the church revealed to this reporter that members of this church are expected to wear red or white attires every first and last Sunday of the month. On the floor of the auditorium, there are straight red lines drawn across the floor. She explained that the red lines are Angels’ pathways. “God revealed to Daddy to make those pathways because angels usually visit the church,” she said.

There are two types of sacrifices that are offered in As God Said It Must Be Done, the Temple of The Most High God, this reporter gathers. There is the sacrifice of atonement, which is offered when seeking forgiveness of sins from God.

In carrying out the sacrifice, the prophet slaughters whatever animal the member provides at the ‘Earth Altar’ and ‘forgiveness’ is obtained from God after the prophet has prayed and blessed the person.

There is also the sacrifice of thanksgiving offered when a member wants to thank God for a favour granted him by God. The type of animal used for this type of sacrifice may vary based on individual needs. “You can bring a cow, a ram, a goat, a chicken or even a dove,” another female member of the church said.

Creepy and funny caveats are never in short supply at As God Said It Must Be Done, the Temple of The Most High God. For instance, a woman who is in her monthly cycle is not allowed to enter into the temple; else, she may be visited by God’s wrath.

Prophet Dike said “It’s a sin for a woman to come into the church while she is observing her menstrual flow. It is a very terrible thing. No woman has the right to come into the presence of God while she is menstruating.”

Despite his weird doctrines, Prophet Dike is very hospitable albeit in a way that one may describe as shocking. As soon as visitors to the church among whom was this reporter stepped into the auditorium, he instructs his workers to bring them refreshments.

This consists of two cartons of canned Guinness, popularly known as small stout. While you are yet to overcome the shock of seeing a prophet of God serve alcoholic drinks in the church, he further instructs that some bottles of whisky be brought to entertain his guests.

Seeing the surprise on the faces of his visitors, he immediately explained the reasons for his actions. “There is nothing like alcohol or strong drink in the bible, so where did you get that from? In Deuteronomy 14 verse 26, God says, “You shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires, for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires, you shall eat there before the Lord your God and you shall rejoice, you and your household.”

God told us to spend our income on what we want. If a man calls himself a man of God and he doesn’t have money, the anointing would turn to annoyance. It is better that you drink in the House of God than to go to a public place and misbehave” he said. Before the prophet was through with attending to his visitors, he had gulped two bottles of small stout.

“Are you not afraid of going to hell” this reporter queries the prophet? Then he laughs hysterically and said “It is unfortunate that you have been taught the wrong doctrine from the time you were little. Who told you that hell exists? Heaven and hell do not exist. Can a spirit judge a spirit? There is nothing like heaven or hell. They don’t exist. All the punishment is here on earth.

If a man cannot feed himself and his family, he is living in hell. If he cannot pay his house rent and cannot afford to buy a car for himself, he is living in hell. When your mates are enjoying life and you cannot enjoy it, you are living in hell.

“If you are suffering, it means that God is punishing you for something you have done, so there is no hell anywhere. When a man dies, that is the end. He does not go anywhere and God does not judge him. In Mark 12, verses 18 to 27, it is written there that “God is not the God of the dead but of the living.

“So what death are we talking about? If you are living well and you are enjoying your life, you are living in heaven. People like Aliko Dangote, Adenuga, Otedola, Obasanjo and other rich men are living in heaven already.

In the Bible, it is written that it’s God’s wish that we live in health and prosper even as our soul prospers.”

Led by God to steal?
Reflecting on how he came into the ministry as well as his early encounter with the “holy spirit”, Prophet Dike hinted “From my tender age, I used to steal a lot. Wherever any person kept money, I would steal it, even if I was not there when the money was being kept. You may have money in your pocket and you would not know when I would take it.

“I remember when my father used to hide his money in the spring bed in his room. Though I wasn’t around when he kept it, but the spirit of God would lead me to where the money was and I would just go straight to the room and to the exact spot where he kept the money and steal it. I did not know that it was the hand of God that was at work in me.

“This thing continued and because of that, my father sent me to Benin after my primary education. I went there but I continued having the same problems until I finally came to Lagos. It was while I was in Lagos that Jesus appeared to me and gave me the message from God.

“On April 14, 2001 by 7am, I was approaching Omole Phase 1 Estate when Jesus appeared to me in the form of a young man. I remember that I had a cigarette in my mouth and I thought that the odour of the smoke would offend him. He told me “Son, my father is calling you”.

“I had this encounter three times. In one of such encounters, Jesus came to my shop where I was a panel beater and told me, ‘Son, my father has need for you. The time for panel beating is up, now is the time to panel beat your children. Father said you are too stubborn, but if you think you are stubborn, He’s more stubborn than you.’

“After He said that, He disappeared and I didn’t see him again. I still did not obey. I went from one shop to the other but it was one misfortune after the other. At a time, my shop got burnt and that was when I decided to obey God’s instruction. That is why till date, no one can come out and say he shepherded me. I do not have any human mentor; it’s God that is my mentor. He speaks to me all the time and when I need anything, I go to Him for advice. No man can say he ordained me. It was God that ordained me.”

Man of God or Anti-Christ?
“People can call me names. Some may say I am an antichrist. Others may say I am Ogboni, but I do not care. My calling was foretold in the Bible. The book of Isaiah 42 verses 1-2, says “Keep silent before me, oh Islands and let the people renew their strength. Let them speak; let them come near and let them speak; let us come near together to judgment.

Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? He gave them as the dust to his sword and as driven stubble to his blow.” The man from the East that God was referring to is me,” Prophet Dike boasted and added that “On October 28, 2012, I met with God in the Garden of Eden.

In that revelation, Oyedepo was there, Adeboye was there, Okonkwo was there, Pope John Paul was there and so many other pastors. While we were meeting, God was very angry and told me to drive them away , because they were not doing His will and they were encouraging people to worship Jesus instead of God. Four months after that, the Pope died. God raised me to test people to know whether they are obeying the law of God or the law of men. There is nothing like the trinity. What we have is God, the Word and the Spirit. And those are the three witnesses.”

God is angry with Nigeria
“One of the reasons why God is angry with Nigeria is because they have abandoned the day that God said the New Year should be celebrated. They are now celebrating January 1 as the New Year day.

It is totally wrong. New Year should be celebrated on July 10 each year and not on January 1. In the book of Leviticus 16 verse 29, God says: “This shall be a statute forever for you. In the seventh month on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you.”, he quipped.

On the New Testament
More curious to know why some of their doctrines negate what is written in the Bible, especially in the New Testament, Prophet Dike said “the New Testament is the mind of man but the Old Testament is the mind of God.

“In the Old Testament, God spoke directly to the prophets and they wrote down what He said, but in the New Testament, the disciples only wrote their minds. For instance, there is nothing like being born again because God can never be born again. The New Testament is not the mind of God. It is men speaking and not God. In the book of Matthew for instance, what is written there is the mind of Matthew and not the mind of God. But in the Old Testament, God spoke directly to his prophets. He spoke directly to people like Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Solomon and so on.”

One of the cardinal points of Christianity is the belief that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and that he died for the sins of the world and rose again. Prophet Dike is furious over these assertions. “Jesus was just a servant and not God. He has finished his duty on earth the same way other prophets finished their calling,he said adding “Any Christian that leaves God and starts giving glory to Jesus should be ashamed. Jesus can never be God.

He is not the savior and he did not die for anyone. Anyone that tells you that Jesus is the son of God is a fraud and is not of God. Do the Muslims worship Mohammed? No. They worship only God, but you see Christians worshiping Jesus and even equating him with God.

“In the book of Deuteronomy, God says he is the only one that should be worshiped and that we should not bow down to any image. So why do people worship Jesus when he is just a prophet? He did not die for anybody’s sins. He died just like any other human being. If he died for you, why are many people still afraid to go to their villages? If you say that Jesus is the only son of God, then what was Adam? Was he not also a son?
“When Adam who was made in the image of God could not save you, then who is Jesus to save you? I don’t want to hear the name of Jesus because he is not God and has never been God. God is very angry with Nigeria because they have taken His glory and given it to a mortal man. Why we have this high level insecurity is because of God’s wrath.”

This reporter sought to know from some members why they attend the church and if they are not skeptical of the doctrines propagated by the prophet. The leader of the men’s fellowship in the church, Mr. Richard Onyekachukwu said that he would continue attending the church because God used the prophet to raise him from the dead.

His wife, Esther confirmed his claim. According to her, “My husband was admitted at LASUTH (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital) for what started as fever. The situation gradually worsened and he eventually died.

Doctors had certified him dead and his brothers had started making plans to take him to the village for burial. But when I called the prophet, without seeing my husband, he prayed for him and he came back to life.”

CultureTraditionalists Dare Ogun Govt Over Oro Festival by georgecso(op): 10:40am On Jul 19, 2013
Palpable fear has gripped some residents of Ogere, Iperu, Ilishan, Ikenne towns and Irolu all in Remo North and Ikenne Local Government Areas of Ogun State following the threat by Oro cultists to begin their festival in day time contrary to the directive of the state government.

Vanguard gathered that the traditionalists have vowed to go ahead with the festival despite the directive by the Ogun State government which had banned day time Oro festival across the state following a clash between the traditionalists and Muslims in some parts of the state last year.

Vanguard gathered that the traditionalists have vowed to go ahead with the festival despite the directive by the Ogun State government which had banned day time Oro festival across the state following past clashes between the traditionalists and Muslims in some parts of the state last year.

It was gathered that, the atmosphere in the towns is charged following the insistence of the Oro cultists who have reportedly announced the commencement of the festival in different parts of Remo for three consecutive days.

The state government had last year in a letter entittled ‘Annual Oro traditional festival,’ signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Cabinet and Special Services, Mrs. K.I. Akinwande given a directive banning such across the state to prevent clashes between traditionalists and Muslims.

The state government while responding to a letter of request by the Ologere of Ogere, Oba Oladele Ogunbade dated July 9, 2013 on whether the Oro cultists should be allowed to hold their festival in day time, said the decision of the government to ban day time Oro festival last year remained intact.

“Please, be informed that at a recent meeting with the Commissioner of Police and Ogun State government, it has been resolved that on no account should any Oro festivals be held during the day again in Ogun State,” government said.

It was, however, gathered that Oba Ogunbade has communicated the decision of the state government to the Oro cultists, but they reportedly insisted in carrying out the festival being an annual event.

PoliticsYarima Took Clerics To Jonathan To Pray For Peace by georgecso(op): 12:55pm On Jul 18, 2013
Former Zamfara State Governor Ahmed Sani Yarima yesterday told Daily Trust he led a team of Muslim clerics to a meeting with President Jonathan two weeks ago so that they would pray for peace in the country, and not to further any political goal.

Yarima was said to have shepherded many prominent Muslim clerics from around the country to meet with the president penultimate Friday in order to further Jonathan’s yet-to-be declared second-term ambition and to also try to supplant Vice President Namadi Sambo on the presidential ballot in 2015.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, had in attendance a representative of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigachukun, Prof Tijjani Al-Miskin and Zamfara deputy governor Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad, who was commissioner in Yarima’s cabinet when he was governor.

Sources had told Daily Trust that Yarima had sold the idea that he was the only one who could rally round Muslim clerics to support Jonathan’s candidature given his well-known Sharia credentials. Yarima, now a senator, was the first governor to introduce Sharia before several other states in the North followed suit in 2000-2003.

Our correspondent gathered that the Muslim clerics who attended the meeting with Jonathan under the aegis of the National Ulama Consultative Forum were from different parts of the country.

But Yarima, a frontline promoter of the opposition’s All Progressives Congress (APC), yesterday said the meeting was not political and he had no plans to be vice president in Jonathan’s government.
He said the meeting was convened on invitation by President Jonathan so that the clerics would pray for an end to the insecurity that has bedeviled parts of the North.

“This is just a baseless rumour,” he told Daily Trust by telephone, referring to the allegations that he wanted to be vice president.

“I have said it time without number that I will never decamp to PDP no matter what. I will never leave my party, All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but because of the fact that we are merging together, I’m now in APC.

“With this my stand you will see that the rumour is baseless. Or have you ever seen where an opposition member becomes a vice president to a ruling party? This is not possible anywhere in the world.”

He said their visit to the Presidency had nothing do with politics but that it was purely on the security challenges affecting the country.

“When the president was Vice President to late Yar’Adua I led clerics to the villa under the umbrella of National Ulama Consultative Forum which I formed when I was governor of Zamfara State with the twin aims of promoting unity among
Muslims and championing the cause of Islam in the country. President Jonathan called me recently that he wants me to lead the same group of clerics to him so that they can pray for the country and that was what happened.

“During the visit, the clerics offered prayers for the restoration of peace in all parts of the country. They also asked the president to look into some issues including the restoration of GSM services in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states and find a lasting solution to insecurity challenges facing us. The president was very happy and he pledged to look into it. This was weeks ago and now he has ordered the restoration of GSM services,” he added.

Zamfara deputy governor Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad, who also attended, told Daily Trust yesterday their meeting with the president had nothing to do with alleged the moves to dislodge Vice President Sambo.

Speaking through his press secretary, Yusuf Idris, the deputy governor said the meeting was purely on religion affairs.
“His Excellency my boss led the clerics to the Presidency under Ulama Consultative Forum and there was nothing political as people are speculating. At the meeting, the clerics urged the President to intensify efforts at addressing the insecurity in the country and the President assured them of his commitment to it,” he said.

When contacted, Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigachukun declined comment and referred our correspondent to Senator Yarima. “Please keep me out of this. I’m a cleric and not a politician, go and meet Yarima on this please,” he told our correspondent by telephone.

Another cleric who attended the meeting also told our correspondent that the meeting was not political.
“Yes we went to the President few weeks ago but it has nothing to do with politics. The president is for all of us and there is nothing bad for us to visit him,” he said, asking not to be named.

PoliticsBoko Haram Kingpin Amir Of Bulabulin Ngarnam, With N10million Bounty Killed(pix) by georgecso(op):
JTF spokesman Lt Col Sagir Musa in one of the bunkers dug by suspected Boko Haram members in Bulabulin area of Maiduguri, yesterday.

Security forces yesterday said they have killed many insurgents, including a top Boko Haram commander who had a N10 million bounty on his head, during an operation in some strongholds of the sect in Maiduguri.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) said during the on-going campaign that started on July 3 its men discovered many mass graves, tunnels, bunkers and assorted arms and ammunitions buried in graveyards and deserted areas.

JTF did not give a specific number of insurgents killed, but residents said over 100 people lost their lives during the operation. A state specialists hospital official also told Daily Trust that more than 95 bodies were deposited in the past 10 days as the operation went on.
The revelation came shortly after some journalists were allowed access to select areas in Maiduguri where insurgents used to hold sway, which had been cordoned off by security operatives.

Our correspondent reported that it was a gory sight—with decomposing bodies strewn around destroyed homes and business premises.

In a statement in Maiduguri yesterday, JTF spokesman Lt-Col Sagir Musa said between July 3 and 8, troops “had dislodged Boko Haram terrorists from their main enclaves in Bulabulin Ngarnam, Aljajeri and Falluja areas of Maiduguri metropolis.”
He said troops had engaged some insurgents in serious fight which led to the killing of many of them, adding that the operation was ongoing.

“During the encounter, some terrorists were killed in the fire fight including the main Amir of Bulabulin Ngarnam, who was on the wanted list of the JTF with N10million bounty.

“He was responsible for the killing of a teacher and three students of Sanda Kyarami secondary school Ruwan Zafi in Maiduguri metropolis. Many abducted women, girls and children were rescued and handed over to their families by the task force.

“During the search of the areas, many arms and ammunition of various calibers buried inside houses and cemeteries were recovered,” the statement said.

Lt-Col Musa, who conducted journalists round the selected areas, added that in the course of the operation, decomposing corpses of some people killed after they were abducted by the insurgents had been found in sewages.

He said mass graves of insurgents killed during encounters but taken away by their surviving colleagues were also found in the areas.
“Troops also discovered vast network mouse-holes linking compounds and underground tunnels as well as bunkers under houses.

Troops are still searching the area for more weapons, ammunition and mass graves. The JTF uses this opportunity to appeal to members of the public for support and more information on terrorists’ activities,” Lt-Col Musa said in the statement.
Our correspondent reports seeing decomposing bodies in the cordoned areas, with flies hovering around and putrid odour oozing out.

Daily Trust reports that for over 10 days, residents of Abbaganaram, Tashar Gwoza and other locations close to Bulabulin, Bayan Tasha have been in distress as a result of terrifying sound of gunshots, and movement of armoured personnel carriers and other military hardware.

Movement had been restricted and stops and search operations intensified.

A credible source at the State Specialists Hospital in Maiduguri confirmed that over 95 bodies had been deposited there in the past 10 days.

“Because of limited space in the mortuary, workers from the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) always come here and evacuate the corpses. This is necessary in order to avoid an epidemic,” he said.

Daily Trust reports that following the sacking of the insurgents’ territories in northern Borno as well as in Sambisa forest and Gwoza hills in central and northern parts of the state, some insurgents sneaked into Maiduguri and settled in Bulabulin, Ngarnam and Bayan Tasha, prompting JTF to cordon the places and conduct operations.

Borno is among the three states under a state of emergency—along with Yobe and Adamawa—which was proclaimed on May 17 in the wake of rising activities of insurgents.

PoliticsBoko Haram: Let’s Do What America Did To Mexico — Nigerian US Army by georgecso(op): 10:28am On Jul 15, 2013
MAJOR Wisdom Osagiede Ogbewekon-Osemwende is a Nigerian serving in the United States Army; he served in Iraq during the American/Iraqi war. A member of the Benin royal family, he is currently attached to the African Command in Germany. In this interview conducted by telephone, he spoke on the security challenges facing the country and how the Boko Haram insurgency can be tamed. Excerpts:

On security challenges in Nigeria
Terrorism is an enduring situation worldwide. In Nigeria, this is causing a lot pains to the people and the armed forces. The extreme ideology of the Boko-Haram sect and what is happening in the North is very disturbing. Northern leaders such as the late Sarduana of Sokoto, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa; Mallam Aminu Kano; the late Major Gen Joseph Garba; and many others who labored to make the North what it is today will never forgive the sect for what they have turned the region into and I know that average northerners are good people and are not in support of what they are doing. I am however pleased with what President Jonathan is doing to curtail the insurgency and the Niger Delta militants and needs the support of all Nigerians.

On security challenges, the country needs to create special branches in the armed forces, that is, the army, navy and air force that would be given specialized training on how to handle terrorism; they should be able to fight on land, sea and in the desert. This special force should be deployed to the Gulf of Guinea to maintain peace in the area.

There should be combined operations involving the army, navy and the air force to curtail the activities of Boko Haram; it should not be left in the hands of the police or army alone.

Stability of operations
This follows after combined operations of the military. They must not leave the scene of operations immediately, they should stay to stabilize operations and return normalcy to the area.

Border patrol
A division that is made up of men and officers from all branches of the armed forces should be created to join the Customs, Immigration and police to patrol our porous borders with Cameroun, Chad, Niger, etc . They should effectively man the border points because this is where the Boko Haram people leave for Mali and Mauritanian for training. The Nigerian government should be prepared to spend money on technology, censors and radars should be mounted at sensitive border points to monitor what is going on.

The Federal Government can establish three central control divisions to man Nigerian/Cameroun, Nigerian/Niger, and Nigerian/Chad borders with radar installed to monitor the movements of people. The radar will send information to the central divisions and place those on patrol at alert. This is what the Boko-Haram people do and they move with ease in and out of the country to train in Mali and other countries. There is also the need to install underground sensors along the borders with our neighbours that will send signals to the central control system which, in turn, calls for air support in cases of emergency. The security agencies should train dogs to sniff persons and cars coming into the country because terrorism takes time to plan. It is not done overnight.

They select targets to be attacked, they have good intelligence network and so, to counter them, you must have an intelligence gathering system that is superior to their own.

How to defeat terrorism
Government should allocate more funds for the education of youths in the North; by so doing terrorists would not be able to brainwash or indoctrinate them on their cause. Northern youths should be able to compete with their southern counterparts in every field of human endeavours once they get the right education.

Nigeria should subscribe to the African Military High Command to make her strong in the continent; for training, special assistance, among others.

The police should be properly equipped, they should have a rescue combat training and, above all, Nigerians should have faith in the police and know that they are serving their interest. I recall hosting some Nigerian police officers sent to the United States on community policing with another Nigerian U.S. army officer, Lt. Col. Oronsaye, and we tasked them to ensure that the training they received in the U.S should be well implemented while back in Nigeria. While I commend the Inspector- General of Police, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar, for the innovation that he brought into the police, the men should be adequately funded, supported with adequate logistics provided, computerized vehicles for crime detection and arrests.

All Nigerians get national identity cards entered into a national data base. You must have records of people living in the country including foreigners.

The Federal Government should erect walls along our borders with our neighbours as the United States government did along its Mexican borders when it became clear that there were illegal aliens entering the country through its borders with Mexico.

The Federal Government should dialogue with religious leaders in the North especially Imams on the dangers of allowing Boko-Haram to keep weapons in the mosques. We discovered this in Iraq and we talked with them about the dangers of allowing them to do so.

The Boko-Haram sect and the Niger Delta militants should dialogue and embrace because there is no nation on earth that can survive two wars. Nigerians should give peace a chance.

Crisis in the Niger Delta and oil theft
It is regrettable that Nigeria reportedly lost about 191 Billion U.S. dollars to oil theft and vandalization. I commended the Joint Military Task Force set up by the government to tackle the issue. They should concentrate more efforts in tackling the issue and they should be properly equipped to provide security to Nigerians living in the region. The militants should embrace peace.

PoliticsBritain Bans Boko Haram, Ansar Deen Membership by georgecso(op): 8:51am On Jul 09, 2013
After the Nigerian government, military and civilians waged a successful campaign that has significantly decimated the Boko Haram threat, that potentially destroyed the nation—as the east and west looked on, Britain has finally banned the group, which has been alleged to have received funds from the UK.

Tribune-Boko Haram’s funding traced to UK, S/Arabia •Sect planned to turn Nigeria into Afghanistan •Arrested kingpin opens up

This follows a similar “wanted” labeling, with a $7 million bounty that the US finally placed on the head of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, only after the Nigerian government waged a full war and destroyed the organisation.

It is impossible to imagine what the US and UK were waiting for. Perhaps it goes with a policy of only choosing and labeling organisations to be proscribed based on their victory or loss against the governments.

NewsRescue-Nigeria Terror Mastermind is US Informant with Links to Hezbollah — Media, Wikileaks Investigation

Support for two extremist groups - Minbar Ansar Deen and Boko Haram - is to be made a criminal offence in the UK.

Home Secretary Theresa May has asked for the two radical Islamist organisations to be banned under terrorism laws.

If approved by Parliament, both will be banned from operating in the UK from Friday, the Home Office said.

Minbar Ansar Deen is based in the UK, while Boko Haram operates from Nigeria.

Minbar Ansar Deen - also known as Ansar al-Sharia UK - promotes terrorism by distributing content through a forum on its website, which encourages individuals to travel overseas to engage in extremist activity, specifically fighting, according to the Home Office.

Boko Haram is a militant Islamist group based in Nigeria led by the country's most wanted man, Abubakar Shekau. Its name means "Western education is forbidden" and it has waged an insurgency for more than a decade.

If the two groups are banned, it will be illegal to support or become a member of either group, to arrange meetings or wear clothing in support of them.

Offenders could face fines of up to £5,000 or up to 10 years in prison.
'Potential threat'

The Home Office has not yet offered further information on why it is pursuing the ban of both groups.

Raffaello Pantucci, senior research fellow at the RUSI think tank, said the move indicated that the government sees them as a "potential threat".

Banning the groups would give the police powers to tackle their support networks.

The UK-based Minbar Ansar Deen's website has links to Abu Nusaybah, who was arrested after appearing on the BBC's Newsnight programme talking about Michael Adebolajo, one of the suspects in the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich.

Mr Pantucci said: "It is impossible to say that this constitutes 'a link,' but looking at the group's website they certainly seem to come from the same ideological constellation."

The activities of the Nigerian-based Boko Haram are usually confined to poor, Muslim parts of northern and central Nigeria.

Historically there is little evidence of Boko Haram targeting the UK, Mr Pantucci said.

"Britain's Nigerian community is 90% Christian," said Mr Pantucci, adding that Nigerian terror suspects in the UK were "usually Muslim converts".

However, earlier this year Boko Haram kidnapped a French family in Cameroon. A Nigerian government report revealed the group was paid more than £2m before releasing its hostages.

The Home Office's move to ban the group could indicate that it is becoming more international, "or leaning in that direction", Mr Pantucci said.

Theresa May flagged up Boko Haram, among other extremist groups, in a speech on terrorism in July 2011.

She said: "Increasingly, the threat to Britain comes not just from al-Qaeda's core leadership itself, but from these so-called al-Qaeda's affiliates in places like Yemen and North Africa... and from associated groups like al-Shabab in Somalia and Boko Haram in northern Nigeria."

A Home Office spokesman said: "The government is determined to work with the international community to tackle terrorism and take the steps necessary to keep the UK public safe.

"Proscription of these groups sends a clear message that we condemn their activities."

There are 49 international terror organisations proscribed under the Terrorism Act 2000, including al-Qaeda, al-Shabab and Islam4UK.

The latter, previously led by the radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary, was banned in 2010.

In Northern Ireland, 14 organisations were proscribed under previous legislation.

HealthSoap You Should Never Use -- But 75% Of Households Do by georgecso(op): 12:23pm On Jul 08, 2013
By Dr. Mercola

Triclosan, a high production volume ingredient used as a bactericide in personal care products such as toothpaste, deodorant, and antibacterial soap, has been linked to heart disease and heart failure in a new study.

Yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that "Triclosan is not currently known to be hazardous to humans."1

What this means is that until action is taken to get this common additive out of your toiletries, you could be applying a chemical with proven toxicity to your body multiple times a day …

Triclosan Interferes With Muscle Function

Tricolsan impairs muscle function and skeletal muscle contractility, researchers report in a new study done at the University of California Davis. Although the study was done in mice, researchers said the effects of the chemical on cardiac function were "really dramatic."

After mice were exposed to one dose of triclosan, heart muscle function was reduced by 25 percent, and grip strength was reduced by 18 percent. Fish were also exposed to triclosan – about the equivalent dose as would be accumulated in a week in the wild – and this led to poorer swimming performance. Researchers also exposed individual human muscle cells (from heart and skeletal muscles) to a triclosan dose similar to everyday-life exposure, and this, too, disrupted muscle function and caused both heart and skeletal muscles to fail.

The study's lead author noted:2

"Triclosan is found in virtually everyone's home and is pervasive in the environment. These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health."

Triclosan May Also Alter Hormone Regulation

This ubiquitous chemical is a chlorinated aromatic compound and is used to help reduce or prevent bacterial contamination. It's commonly added to many antibacterial soaps and body washes, toothpastes and certain cosmetics, as well as furniture, kitchenware, clothing and toys.

It would be wise to seriously question purchasing ANY product that contains triclosan as an ingredient on the label, not only because of the new muscle function finding discussed above, but also because of its potential impact on hormones.

A Toxicological Sciences study found that triclosan affected estrogen-mediated responses, and many chemicals that imitate estrogen are known to increase breast cancer risk.3 Triclosan also suppressed thyroid hormone in rats, and this is only one study in an accumulating body of research showing this chemical to be a potent endocrine disrupter.

Past research has also shown:

Exposure to triclosan disrupts thyroid hormone-associated gene expression in frogs, even at low levels (triclosan exposure at 0.15 parts per billion was enough to disrupt a hormone-signaling system in frogs)4
Triclosan decreases circulating concentrations of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) in rats5

Even the FDA states that "animal studies have shown that triclosan alters hormone regulation" and that "other studies in bacteria have raised the possibility that triclosan contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics."6 Although they still maintain that triclosan is not known to be hazardous to humans, they are conducting a review of the chemical, the results of which they expect to release to the public in the winter of 2012.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which regulates triclosan as a pesticide, has also announced it will undertake a comprehensive review of triclosan beginning in 2013, and notes they will "pay close attention to the ongoing endocrine research and will amend the regulatory decision if the science supports such a change." Unfortunately, what this means for you for now is that essentially nothing is being done right now to get this chemical out of your hand soap, body wash and toothpaste.

Triclosan Was First Registered as a Pesticide

If you need more indication that triclosan is probably not the best ingredient to be brushing your teeth with or rubbing onto your underarms, consider that it was first registered with the EPA in 1969 … as a pesticide.

Today it is still registered as a pesticide, although aside from this and its uses in personal care products, it's also widely used for industrial uses, for instance it is incorporated in conveyor belts, fire hoses, dye bath vats, or ice-making equipment as an antimicrobial pesticide, as well as added to adhesives, fabrics, vinyl, plastics (toys, toothbrushes), polyethylene, polyurethane, polypropylene, floor wax emulsions, textiles (footwear, clothing), caulking compounds, sealants, rubber, carpeting, and a wide variety of other products.7

Triclosan is Already Found in 75% of Americans

As it stands, this chemical has already been detected in the urine of three-quarters of the U.S. population,8 which means urgent action is clearly needed. Last year, House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise M. Slaughter and two colleagues called on the FDA to enact a ban on triclosan, noting that "triclosan is clearly a threat to our health" and citing the following reasons for the proposed ban:9

"The presence of triclosan in the human body and its impact on our 'body burden'
Bacterial resistance to antibiotic medications and antibacterial cleaners
The potential for endocrine disruption as a result of triclosan bioaccumulation in the body
Wastewater contamination
The threat of destroying ecological balance
The fact that triclosan is no more effective than soap and water"

This last point is an important one, as the "benefit" of adding an antimicrobial product like triclosan to your hand soap is that it should kill off more germs, and theoretically keep you healthier. On the contrary, there is little or no evidence that these triclosan-containing antibacterial products outperform the good-old-fashioned techniques like washing with soap and water. There is, however, evidence that plain soap is more effective than its antibacterial counterparts. Researchers noted:10

"The lack of an additional health benefit associated with the use of triclosan-containing consumer soaps over regular soap, coupled with laboratory data demonstrating a potential risk of selecting for drug resistance, warrants further evaluation by governmental regulators regarding antibacterial product claims and advertising."

It's Easy to Opt Out of Triclosan-Containing Products

The decision to stop using products that contain triclosan is an easy way to positively impact your and your family's health. There is simply no reason to ever purchase any product with triclosan in it. Triclosan is clearly listed on product ingredient labels, so you can easily check to see if it's there before deciding on a purchase. Remember, this chemical is not only in soaps but also body washes, toothpaste, shampoo, and 140+ other personal care and home products. Unfortunately, triclosan is now also contaminating rivers, streams and sewage sludge that is applied to agricultural fields, so there is a chance you're getting exposed from environmental sources as well.11

Aside from reading labels, if a product claims to be "antibacterial," there's a good chance it contains triclosan, so this can be used as a warning label of sorts if you're looking to avoid this chemical.

PoliticsExplosions Rock Maiduguri As Civilian JTF Engage Boko Haram Stronghold by georgecso(op): 9:45am On Jul 04, 2013
Deafening explosions rocked Maiduguri for the second time in a week as the youth vigilante group, popularly known as Civilian JTF, Wednesday, in the Borno State capital, engaged the Boko Haram insurgents in a deadly clash .

Though the casualty figure from the bloody clash remained unknown when filing this report, it is believed that both sides lost many of their members to the clash.

The confrontation was the climax of weeks of threat by Boko Haram to kill the youths for assisting security operatives in the ongoing crackdown on the insurgents. The youths were also accused by the terrorists of smoking their members out of their hiding, arresting and killing them.

NewsRescue-Restitution Or Compensation? An Amnesty for the Civilian JTF Youth Heroes?

Trouble started, Wednesday afternoon, when the youths invaded the Jajeri ward stronghold of Boko Haram to smoke out their members.

Apparently prepared for war, the youths armed themselves with guns, explosives and machetes as they confronted the insurgents, who returned fire for fire, deploying explosives and bombs which rocked the neighbourhood around the Jajeri ward behind the Baga market with residents of the area scampering for safety in the midst of the confusion.

A source in the area said trouble started when the civilian JTF who have since been receiving support from JTF embarked on a serious stop and search along Baga road where not less than six suspected Boko Haram members were nabbed.

The explosion from Wednesday’s clash, according to residents, was the second in a week in Maiduguri as a woman who had backed explosive device as if it was a baby had the device exploding on her at the Maiduguri Monday market.

Health‘Miraculous Birth’ Shocks Doctors In Kano by georgecso(op): 8:51am On Jul 03, 2013
Doctors at Gwarzo General Hospital in Kano are struggling to come to terms with the successful birth of a baby girl on Wednesday last week, under circumstances they said medical textbooks have labelled “rare and unusual”.

The strange happening occurred after the baby’s mother, who had never gone for antenatal, first visited the hospital located about 30 minutes drive from Kano city last but one Monday.
“She noticed progressive swelling of the area, which she said was Daji (cancer),” the Chief Medical

Director of the hospital, Dr. Charles Onyia, said. “She might have decided to come to the hospital after trying local medication without success,” he hypothesized.

But the doctor who attended to the woman was sure it was not cancer, but something strange, and he did not waste time to ask her to go for a scan.

“When I touched the abdomen, I felt the foetal pad occurring outside her uterus,” Dr. Suleman Abdul said.
As the ultrasound results came, the picture was vivid: the woman, simply called Aisha, was nine months pregnant, carrying live and kicking baby “on the top of her stomach and intestine, not in the womb”.

For the doctors and other medical staff in the hospital, the discovery was not just startling, it was also novel. They didn’t waste time to wheel her into the theatre room and within 30 minutes, the baby had been delivered alive.

“When I was a medical student 20 years ago, Professor Orhue of University of Benin Teaching Hospital said this cannot happen,” recalled Dr. Charles.

“In the professor’s words: ‘It is impossible to have abdominal pregnancies to last to term (that is nine months) [and] even if they do, the baby will not be alive’.”

During the operation, according to Dr. Onyia, more astonishing discoveries were made. “Surprisingly, we found out that membrane was well circumscribed or defined outside the womb, and secondly, the placenta was found on the intestine and stomach,” he said.

“I am proud to tell you that all over the world, we have never seen or heard of this kind of surgery where the baby is brought out alive. It is very rare even in textbooks. They hardly progress or get to 9 months gestation. The baby and the mother are lost mostly during the surgery. She is a miracle,” the CMD added.

The hospital said the baby and the mother were healthy, adding that the newborn had been suckling.
“Usually, we discharge our CS patients seven days after operation, but this is a striking case. We want to observe her condition for 10 days before we discharge her,” according to Dr. Onyia.

The mother, Aisha, who was seen cracking jokes with hospital staff inside a female ward, told Daily Trust that she hailed from Tsaure village in Shanono local government area of Kano State and had never attended antenatal until last week Monday.

For the nine months she was carrying the baby, Aisha had suffered persistent stomach ache. “Now the pains have completely stopped,” she said.
The woman, who said she had five children, expressed happiness over the development, saying her husband was equally very happy about it and had been frequenting the hospital to see both her and the baby.

She said they had not come up with a name for the newborn baby yet. Despite that, however, the hospital management is planning to make the naming ceremony coming up today an eventful one.

“The management of the hospital wishes to call on the state government to assist the family; to give the baby a befitting naming ceremony and to also assist them to take care of the child, because it is a miracle baby,” Dr. Onyia appealed.

When contacted, a consultant gynecologist at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano, Dr. Hauwa Musa Abdullahi, confirmed that abdominal pregnancies are rare, but not impossible.

She recalled a case where a woman having the problem was operated and the baby was brought out alive. “It is not as if it does not happen; it happens but very rarely. Even last week we had a patient with abdominal pregnancy at AKTH, but the baby did not come out alive,” she said.
Dr. Hauwa said the condition is caused by a number of factors, including infections and others.
