1st million at 21, I did after selling solar products online(konga &jumia)and offline. Will visit schools with Solar lamps( Sun King) and sell at night to small stores, the margin was great because of limited variable costs. We still sell solar product www.solartalkers.com. There quite lots of opportunities in this country. Lost quite a lot due to inexperience and trusting people but getting back on track. We are having new products you can become distributors of.

Sir, How much is needed to start the business?

Career / How I Resigned From My #55,000 Job To Become Self Employed by Georgematics(m): 7:35pm On Sep 21, 2018
So I created a thread https://www.nairaland.com/4302611/should-quit-55000-monthly-job#64383921 it eventually graced the front page. From the post, I discovered that there are great minds on this platform who are willing to offer you great advice when you need them. If you are familiar with the above post you will find out that peoples opinion was 50|50 on either to quit Job for school. So far so good, I decided to combine the two to see the Outcome.

Mainwhile, I'm done with first semester (I attended Lectures ones or twice a week and my GP was "not too cool smiley"....we are in second semester at the moment "we've even started exams!.

Long story Short, I've decided to resign after trying both sides of the popular opinion. Now, I just started a mobile boutique business and so far so good (I have a warehouse were I buy good quality clothes at very affordable prices) it has been Profitable. So, I tendered my resignation letter to face the world of the unknown #Aka Entrepreneurship. I have till next Friday b4 my resignation finishes.

Thanks to all that contributed on my other thread and this one. "There's still space at the Top"...Pray for me & You.... definitely, success will find Us.#YouMissedAllOpurtunityNotTaken. #ThanksToYouAll

Nice one bro! Nice. You are lucky it is a federal school. Tuition fee isn't expensive. I take it that you are witty and smart. Apparently, that's all you need to do well in school. I don't know what course you chose or the school, it all boils down to be being smart.

Save enough for a good business
I will like to know what business you intend venturing into. I could also use a business idea.

Thanks bro. Am still sourcing for a good business idea that doesn't demands 100% of my time while doing some online freelance bid with my little free time.

I wont advice you to quit your job and i wont advice you not to go to school. The two of them are needed. If you can find a way to do both.
Have a friend in the school who will be helping you out with things , find time to study when you can and still go to your work place. Take excuses whenever you have test or exams. during your Monthly leave , you should concentrate more on your school. You just can't leave that job , you can't! You said you help your folks with your salary . I wouldn't want you to experience what hunger and lack of money can do. If you quit your job and finances become difficult, how will you cope at sch? i have my classmates then who were working and coming to school, i also have those who were going to two tertiary institutions at the same time, Yabatech and Unilag. Yoo can't lose that job but you can struggle out of school. I hope u understand? i don't know if i made much sense , my head hurts

Thank you so much. You made very good and valid sense. I really liked your Idea. From the advises I've been getting from these good people of Nairaland, I've realized how important both the Job & Education is. So, I'll love to combine the two while saving money to start a business. Thanks alot.

Update: i mentioned you before and i stand by my comment DONT LEAVE WORK BUT YOU CAN CHANGE WORK!

What i mean is keep working and do parttime ALTERNATIVELY if your course has no parttime (e.g medicine, architecture, nursing, engineering) or whatever else you must be in full time then raise capital and acquire a skill with a month or two BEFORE you leave your current job. Barbing, soccer viewing centre, betting shop, catering and events, photography, stationeries and cyber centre e.t.c can fetch huge money within campus.

P.S.: BEING THE ONLY BREAD WINNER IS A WASTE OF ENERGY! Force your mum and younger ones to acquire extra income sources through cake making, restaurant & bar, hair dressing, frying akara, yam or snacks, graphics and web design, phone/laptop repairs and flashing e.t.c They can also be useful in running your new business venture. I REPEAT FORCE EVERYBODY ABOVE JS3 OR AGE 15 TO STOP DEPENDING SOLELY ON YOU!!

Thanks a million. I'll really take your advice to heart and make the best effort to make the right decision. Thanks a lot.

Raiyell:
My elder brother 11 years ago was without a degree and earning 50k as a logistics manager at a shipping firm. He joined the company at 19 and became an associate manager three years later.

When it was time for him to be made a full manager, he was bypassed for a less skillful and hardworking alternative. He quit the next morning and started working towards a degree.

He went in, studied law and came out with a nice grade. He went to Germany to study maritime law, again, did well. When he came back, he applied to a company in the same industry where he got his first experience, he was hired on the spot.

Six months later, a global shipping company headhunted him for their West Africa division. Today, at the age of 35 he's a board member in the same company and receives many unwanted job offers on the daily.

Did I forget to say he makes over $100k as salary? Yeah, he earns about 3 million per month.

Why are my telling you this?

1. You haven't arrived
2. Your current salary is the most minimum your potentials can command
3. You will lose opportunities on account of your lack of formal education
4. Your family will be better off in the long run. You guys will not die
5. No pain no gain

Now, schooling does not mean you should be without income. In this modern age and time, all you need to make a comfortable living is a laptop and decent internet connection. Save to buy a laptop and modem if you do not already own these and become a freelancer.

There are so many things you can be doing as freelancer that will bring you more than your present salary.

If you are not sold on the freelancing Route, great. Now you can focus on finding a homegrown business that you can offer to your fellow students.

You've come to the point whereby you can't be without income, so don't be.

Just use your head more.

Please, don't look for love at this point unless you can brainwash the babe to spend money while you spend attention, love and care on her. You must learn to be practical.

Don't live above your means, don't keep bad company, dont pursue first class, don't be too hung over grades but by all means do not neglect your studies.

Good luck.

Sorry for the typos. I'm on mobile.

Thank you so so much for this great piece. You have literally given me a pool of information to help me choose from. I lovr the idea on Freelancing plus I've got a laptop and modem. I'll take my time and go through this epic piece all over. Thank You and remain blessed.

What gratuity and pension are you expecting to get when you resign?

My company run a service with Premium Pension were #6000 is been deducted from our monthly salary and the company adds #4000 to save and 25% of the totalled insured money is paid to you when you resign, then you get paid #5000 a month after some amount of time if you haven't gotten another work

Is that the only school available?

Why not set up a business that doesn't require your presence to function...so you can be getting some money from their to support your full time education?

Like I said earlier I've spend too much time seeking this admission already and it will be very devastating for me to wait 1 more year & I'll have to rewrite jamb. I'll really look into setting up a business as you suggested. Thanks a lot.

My brother,it is going to be a hard decision especially in Nigeria of today where the future is bleak. Have you thought abt the possibility if combining both? It will be tedious but since you have been in the job for years, you should be able to manovouer your ways. If not,part-time studies will have been much better. I can't advise you to quit that job oo. It ain't easy.

Talk to one your boss,a matured woman more preferable. She will talk to you like a son. God will guide you.

Thank you so much for your word of advice. I have actually seeked the advice from a couple of people and they had been given me this same idea. The uncertainty of getting a job after school is there too...I'll really think about it. Thanks ones more.

If you don't have an adequate financial backing,I will advise you get a school where you do part-time studies while you work. That's your best bet especially because your family also benefits from you.

Thanks you sir for your input, but the school I applied don't offer part time for 100 level and age is not on my side.

Depends on what career you have in mind for yourself.
I was exactly in your shoe 9 years ago.
Look at me now, what I earn in a month is more than fifteen times what I would be earning if I were still there.
No pain no gain.
Take the plunge and see where you land.

Thank you bro...i'm motivated by your words. I appreciate

Why not enroll for a part-time programme in the university...at least you won't loose both sides.. You can still be working and use the salary to carter for your education and personal needs... That is what many business guys are doing now ...at the end you still get your degree certificate...That's my candid advise.

Thank you. The problem is that there is no part time studies for level 100 in the university I applied..still thanks alot

Good day all, Pls this issue had been given me sleepless nights so I decide to bring it here to hear your opinions and idvice.

I had been looking for admission for the past 4 years and luckily I finally got admitted into a federal university here were am reciding. The problem is; I had been the one taking care of my self and also assist my family with the salary I was earning from the company were I work. Due to economic reasons I wasn't able to save money after paying bills for myself and some of my family (I'm single, lives alone but my Mum & siblings live not to far from my residence). The only money I'll be falling back on if I quit my Job is the gratuitee and Pention.

So, I'm seeking your mature advice, Should I quit Work & Focus on Schooling? Pls help a brother. Thanks in advance
