For instance Company A is a listed company and can get a product from Company Z (an external company) at 3m, the major owner of company A have a company called company D and give company A 20% holdings there to establishrelationshipin the group. Company A will pay Company D for the product upfront at 4m, then company D will buy it from company Z at 3m to supply company A. Anytime the major owners of the listed company (A) needs money they collect it and ask the finance to book it against company D interco.
The staff of company A will be the same staff running company D, yet they will be booking fictitous expenses in company D. They will get one hungry mushroom auditor who can dance to their tune to audit company D
... and submit the report as at when due. That is not so difficult, don't we have hundreds of company doing exactly that?

Nigeria is still extremely under-developed and needs many more entrepreneurs to set up big businesses like Wale shocked.
Big businesses are good and the world needs the entrepreneurs. However, we need good/great entrepreneurs and not cowboys. Coyboys can run their private enterprises and choose to report whenever they like or not to report at all, it is private. If you list your company and you take money from the public, you must abide by the regulations in the best way possible.

What the world needs are people who have regards for established standards and order.

Reporting falls in the purvue of the CFO, if the CEO cannot get his CFO to do just that, then he should not be the CEO except he is the one stopping the CFO.

The reserve can not be going up without impacting the exchange rate positively
Foreign reserve is foreigh reserve as someone said. It is like a switch and it is transactional, it is either there as an amount or not whereas the exchange rate is neither a direct switch or transactional in nature, it is affected by several factors. The calculation and the reporting is not also at the same time.

If foreign reserve is increasing consistently for some time, and all others things are equal, the positive impact will be visible on the exchange rate and it will be stable and sustainable.

Truth be told, OANDO needs to sit up, a listed company with over N 1T market capitalization should not be having these type air about defaulting in scheduled reporting around them. We are talking about a multinational, highly capitalised company in one of the most established sectors in the world.

The management should start by firing the CFO and replace him with a professional who is ready for world/best-in-class standards.

Thank you. Most people didn't read that it is a private farm and not government farm.

We just like blaming government for everything. The money to set up that farm is less than what we do blow in a party in one weekend as a people. Most of our cities are full of drnking joints and those in that businesses are becoming billionaires because the business is good. What national productivity like this do Nigerians embark on?

Greetings all. I work in Nigeria but earn in dollars. I have always been reluctant to invest in stocks, as my dollar-denominated salary has significantly hedged me against the constant slide of the Naira. Lately, the thought of diversifying into stocks has been recurring. Will buying stocks be as profitable compared to saving in dollars? I am in for the long run (5 to 10 years). Kindly advise. Thanks.
It doesn't matter what you earn, you are missing out if you do not invest in equity, either locally or globally.
You will be good with dollar denominated stocks. Google, Tesla, Amazon, Nvidia etc. There is a thread for it on Niaraland, go there and equip yourself.

However, since you live in Nigeria, I advise that you should also invest some money in Nigeria stocks maybe about 10% of your investible funds. Buy solid stocks that pays dividend and watch it grow.

TravelRe: Nigerians In The UK Are Really Suffering by ghm: 7:11pm On Jul 08, 2023

Tories were under some pressure from UKIP and Nigel Farage when Cameron was seeking re-election. Cameron decided to promise a referendum on EU because he viewed it as an easy way to appease the far right minority in his party that were clamouring for it. Many of them were only doing so because they feared losing their seats to UKIP. Surely the UK population would never vote to leave right lol

Unfortunately for them, Boris Johnson saw the referendum as an opportunity to boost his popularity among the far right conservatives to maybe one day become prime minister and suddenly it wasn’t just some far right movement.

Cameron was openly against leaving even though he was the one calling the referendum. If Brexit won he would be forced to resign, which he did. I doubt even Boris really wanted Brexit. It was just politician after politician climbing on the movement for their own personal ambition. In fact many of them did so because they believed it would never actually happen.

Just comical all round.
Well. I used to think so until I spoke to several UK citizens and found out that many people actally wanted Brexit even though there weren't much justifications to non-UK citizens. The poll was actually a true representative of what the people wanted.

The major problem is the preparation for it's implementation wasn't as solid as the politicians made the citizens believe.

PoliticsRe: What Is Your Take On The Fuel Subsidy Removal? by ghm: 9:40pm On Jun 01, 2023
Some of us are tired of hearing about Subsidy removal. I have been hearing that as a teenager under military administration. I am above forty years old now and the same is still being discussed. Other issues we should be tired of are:

Turn around maintenance
East-West Road
Second Niger Bridge (Thank God we will rest from this one).
Railroad construction
Ballot box
devaluation
etc

Haba, move on Nigeria. Let it be removed once and for all for ever. We will survive. What we need to do is to hold our leaders accountable, first by taking them up on excessive extravagance as public officers like having several expensive cars and endless entourage/escorts etc.
PoliticsRe: Peter obi: Dangote refinery will give us Additional Savings On Foreign Exchange by ghm: 8:04pm On May 23, 2023
Let me attempt to answer some of these questions as I know it. Others may please add.

PNomsule:
All these band wagon appraisals, abeg!

1. How would the crude be transported from point of drill to the refinery and in consideration of the plausible congestion already in Lagos? The crude will be sourced from 3 continents and will be brought by tankers(crude transporting ships) and will be dislodged through the new port in the same location. This also applies to the crude that will come from Nigeria (Niger delta or deep offshore.

2. What sort of regulations would be put in place to see that Dangote Refinery doesn't exploit her end users? Dangote refinery is a private entity. He will still buy crude at the prevailing international market prices from NNPC just like other customers, so nothing really has changed except the cost of shipping from Europe/Asia that will no longer be necessary. The refinery will also sell to other African countries at prevailing int'l market prices. It is good to know that international prices is transparent, so any differential will be frowned at.

3. Would govt discontinue the subsidy payment given Dangote Ref would be able to supply more than the daily required fuel consumption by Nigerians? this is entirely govenment decision and has nothing with Dangote Refinery (DR). e,g, If DR is selling at 10kobo, government will buy from DR at 10kobo and can decide to sell to Nigerians at 6k and thus subsidised by 4k. It is solely government decision.

4. How much is Govt stake in this supposed private entity? The last time I checked Nigeria through CBN bought 20% at $2.6B, it was described as a strategic move to compell DR to buy 300K barrels of crude daily from Nigeria.

5. What alternative plans would the nation have so we don't get over reliant on this sole refinery especially that it's run on a single train?Importing option (buying from EU or Asia, that has been used for decades will still be open for use. Secondly, modular and other refineries should spring up.

I know you're petty. I'm not among the framers of the constitution.
Deal with it. The constitution has already given the conditions for one to emerge as president.

1. Majority votes
2. 25% of votes cast in 24 states AND
3. 25% of votes cast in FCT.

If it's not okay by deal with the constitution
Oga, with due respect, at times, it is better to be a little bit thorough and check things out so that one will not be giving misleading information unknowingly.

In section 134 of the constitution, it is 2 conditions that were stated and not 3 as you put it here. Your No 2 and 3. are put together as the second condition in the constitution. it will be misleading for you to put them as 3 separate conditions instead of 2 the way the constitution put it.

Presenting the conditions as 3 the way you put it here will require little or no argument but that is not how the constitution put it. Puting it as just 2 conditions in the consitution requires experts interpretation. That is why we need to leave the interpretation of the second condition to the judiciary to clarify once and for all so that this won't be an issue in the future when similar situation arises.

Please see a screenshot of the constitution you quoted below.

How can I invest in a company that pays dividend either weekly or yearly.
I will appreciate your input
It is good you have defined your own strategy for investing. It will help you to focus when other people are expressing their own.

I am not aware of any company that pays dividend weekly but dividend-paying US companies pay monthly, quarterly or annually. Instead of giving you fish, it is better to teach you how to fish. Kindly google dividend paying companies and do a little research to get a list by yourself. You can check a couple of sites, compare the results and make your decision. You can share your results here so that people can give further advice.

Please note that if I am to give you direct answer/list, I will do exactly what I have asked you to do, "Google it".

This is what I find very troubling with our people and how we defend guilt as clean.
The constitution is very clear. “You can not hold another country citizenship and be a president of Nigeria” this was to avoid double agent, which country can you then defend.
Honorary citizen does not confer you the country’s passport, we all saw Tinubu and his pictures affixed on Guinean passport, a clear violation to be president of Nigeria if he did not renounce his citizenship before running for Nigerian President.
Another Supreme Court interpretation of honorary citizen, Supreme Court interpretation of 2/3 of 36 states “And Federal territory” they will lie and make us look stupid in the international arena.
Oga, I don't know if you are a lawyer or not but I am not and I keep learning everyday from experts and technocrats in various area. Thank you for asking. God will deliever us in this country.

I was an eye witness of similar thing in a remote town in UK. A woman slumped, hit her head on an iron bar, she was lifeless on the floor. People rushed to her, they gave her water, another brought cloth and another called an ambulance. The ambulance came in 7 minutes, took the woman away and 3 days later she came around healthy with bandage on her head. thanking everybody in that area for their help that her life was restored.

Why should people be looking like that when there is a vulnberable person that really need their help? This is not because of Buhari, Wike, APC, PDP or LP, this is what Nigerians are becoming. We have to start doing better please.

BusinessRe: I Just Got My Inheritance; I Need Your Advice by ghm: 3:49pm On Jan 24, 2022

Hello Nairalanders,

So straight to the point. Please I need your advice about two things.

1. I just got my inheritance and I got cash of 8M and there's this popular belief of people squandering their inheritance,I don't want that to be my portion so which business can I invest it into. For context, I currently have a job and I'm not ready to quit so please put that into consideration.

2. My younger brother is still a student so he has asked me to save his portion of 6M in bank until he graduates but I don't think that's a good idea. I would rather he put it in some form of secure investment that will be yielding something. Kindly give us suggestions.

May the soul of my beloved Father continue to rest in peace. Amen
I don't usually comment but I do read from time to time but I belief you are sincere and I think I can assist with my token.

1. Watch this Youtube video from alux.com - (15 Things To Do If You Get Rich All of a Sudden). Link -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVJOyArnq3s
2. Pick a pen and paper and write down all the suggestions you have seen from Nairalanders and review/meditate on it. They wil give you some ideas on Financial Education.

Having said the above, this is what I will do if I find myself in your exact situation.

1. I will not quit my job. I will continue working like nothing has happened.
2. I will change my brother's 6m in US Dollar and invest it with Stanbic IBTC Dollar denominated Money Market fund. You can walk into any StanbicIBTC Asset Management office to open an account.
3. I will do the same for my own N 8m.
4. I will not do any investment or business with the money until a minimum of 6 months.
5. I will get financially educated and review all suggestions above and choose 2 or 3 viable ideas and invest 20% of the money and see how it goes for at least a year.

I belief If I followed thses 5 steps, by 12 months I will be in a better situation to make decision on the remaining 80%.

I wish you the best.
Car TalkRe: Are Kia And Hyundai Cars As Reliable As Toyota Cars? by ghm: 4:56pm On Jan 05, 2014
I have read this thread sometimes back but I am here today to share my experience. I used an Honda Accord and Toyota Camry as Tokunbo cars as I was advised that it is better to buy Honda/Toyota even if they are Tokunbo than to buy brand new Kia/Hyundai cars. After a couple of issues with the tokunbo cars, I followed my heart and went for brand new Kia sportage in 2006. Today my first Sportage is 7 years, it has done 82,000 kilometers, with regular servicing, I haven't changed anything in the engine, I have only replaced the AC compressor, ball joints and some bushings in the arm. I bought another one for my wife in 2010 and that one has also done about 45,000 kilometers, the only thing we have changed in it was a bearing in the the back axle.

I am not sure any other brand can do more than this. IMO, KIA/Hyundai cars are not inferior to T/H cars, they may even be superior.

PropertiesA Block Of Shops Vs A Block Of Flats - Which Is Better? by ghm(op): 4:45pm On Mar 15, 2013
Friends, I have been having some disturbances in the past few days and I decided to bring it up here to seek your opinion so as to make a better decision. I have a plot of land on a tarred road in a developing residential area and I have been preoccupied with the desire to build a block of flat with 4 nos 2 bedroom flats on it. Suddenly, I was taken abark that a block of shops will be better considering the level of furnishing the flats will require and the simplicity of the shops.

FYI, a 2 b/r flat goes for 400K in that area now and once completed, I hope to earn 4 x 400K = 1.6M per annum as rent (all things being equal).
On the other hand, a shop goes for 15K per month i.e. 15K x 12 = 180K per annum. The land can also take up to 10 shops which is 180 x 10 = 1.8M per annum as rent.

I am assuming that the 2 styles will cost the same amount to construct.

With your experience, is there any other thing I need to take into consideration? Or I should just go by the straight arithmetic above that shop is better?

Please advise.
Cheers!

I urgently need your advice on this. My wife (using the passport with her maiden name)and I applied for US visiting visa in March but was denied. We thought the major reason was because she was pregnant anyway.

Now, we are planning to visit US next year with our baby this time around. My question is this, will it be okay if we apply again with my wife's new passport that now bears our SURNAME? Does this pose any issue that may work against us? Kindly advise. I am sorry, it is not about DV but the contributions I have seen here assures me that I can get a reliable and honest answer here.
