Barely two hours after announcing sweeping changes in the nation’s military leadership, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday held his first meeting with the newly appointed Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President said the shake-up was part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and enhance the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.

“I have approved changes in the hierarchy of our Armed Forces to further strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture,” President Tinubu stated.

According to the announcement, General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu takes over as Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes the Chief of Air Staff. In the same vein, Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been named Chief of Naval Staff, and Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

A statement signed by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, confirmed the appointments, describing them as “a continuation of the Federal Government’s commitment to reinforcing Nigeria’s national security framework.”

The meeting with the new Service Chiefs, held shortly after the announcement, reportedly focused on strategies to tackle the country’s multifaceted security challenges and align the Armed Forces with the administration’s national defence priorities.

Joash Amupitan (SAN), President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for the position of chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has denied ever being part of the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

Amupitan made the clarification on Thursday during his screening before the Senate for confirmation.

“We cannot afford to continue to see judges living in rented houses, sometimes squatting with relatives. By the end of President Tinubu’s first tenure, no judge of the FCT High Court will be living in rented quarters,” Wike declared.

He said the administration will deliver 10 duplexes each for the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, and 20 for the FCT High Court.

The minister stressed that the houses would not revert to government ownership upon the retirement of the beneficiaries.

“This is a policy of Mr President. When judges retire, they must go home with their houses. Nobody will reclaim them. That is the true position,” he said.

Wike also revealed that the digitization of the FCT High Court has been provided for in the 2025 budget, with immediate implementation to follow.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed strong displeasure over the commissioning of uncompleted projects by the immediate past administration of Mr. Godwin Obaseki, describing the move as a disservice to Edo people and a clear attempt to mask inefficiency.

Former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has openly admitted that he once benefited from election irregularities in the past.
