I understand what you mean. Another reason that I did granite is the noise factor. Granite naturally makes a sound when driven or walked on which alerts my hounds.

Let me see if I can find the post on the person that did asphalt. It was a long time ago though and might have been lost due to the NairaLand reset.

Our professional bodies are doing too little to prevent quackery in most fields and Government is not helping matters as well. As a matter of fact I have said it before anybody with bUssiness acumen, strong wil and finniacial backbone can operate as a building contractor but it expedient that the fellow should ready to engage the services of professional in various field as either permanent staff or contract basis. I may not be a doctor t own a hospital I may built an hospital and be just a chairman and engage a medical director and all professional needed. But above all integrity, and professionalism is very important.

Consider security with mosque ??

PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Gigaset: 4:44pm On Nov 28, 2021
Thanks for your time sir, there will be two long windows by the main entrance and a roof window in the middle of the hallway, point noted with the study room, the hallway before getting to the lounge is intentional based on privacy,Mosque is intended for family and domestic workers
Horlardorjah:
This plan is not originally Nigerian. I want to believe it's a converted one.
* Mosque, gym, rm 1,2, hallway ain't ventilated enough but I believe this house will be powered steadily for ventilation purpose.
* Study too close to lounge for me except you doing sound proof.
* I have to travel through the hallway before getting to the lounge or is there any other access to the lounge
* Mosque access from outside too close to the main entrance n I believe the mosque is for the immediate family and probably domestic staffs only otherwise u need to consider security

Well, if the house will be powered 24/7, the only issue I will will be traveling to access the lounge.
Not a bad design though guessing where it's coming from.

Thank you very sir all points noted
BrickDevo:
the design is not that bad, might need some rearrangements, i feel some rooms are too narrow and should have more than one window, Room 01, 02, 03, the users might feel a bit uncomfortable, but that depends if you will have constant electricity and provide Artificial means of ventilation, if the kitchen can be swapped with the room 03 better so you can put window adjacent to each other. A total of 4 rooms and only one is cross ventilated, that is not good.

For the mosque i don't know much about it.
Even as it is the plan would work but natural ventilation would be lacking.

Bro’s, do not lead them into temptation with your trial-and-error solutions. You’ve not imported a single door into Nigeria let alone install one to know what it cost (not talking money) those who have towed that path.
I’ve witnessed and done over 100 of those doors and I can tell you those who did regretted the decision.

Well, we need more experience though. So people should feel free to experiment after all it’s their money!
_________

The owner of the doors below is an old member of this forum. He loved everything foreign and hated naija local tinz grin

His friend imported the doors below into the country but his engineer condemned it and my Oga gullibly bought them for his own project.

The rest is history! Money wasted.

I wish a lot of us can be could bold enough to come and share our construction experience and the things we wished we did right but as a black man with black mentality, we will never own up to our mistakes.

This story was shared on this same thread some years back.

_______

If you want more foreign door stories, I’d share.

________

The problem of those doors is beyond the concern you raised. A double-sided hinged panel door won’t give you any issue when installing because it had no frame and it can always be mirrored to work both sides.

How you missed this is something I don’t know?

__________

In Nigeria wey we dey, the handle of a panel door doesn't determine the opening of a door The position of the jamb on the frame does.

I don’t know about LA or UK.
I guess the purpose of this thread is to learn so am here to learn, why can´t we talk about the advantages/disadvantages of imported building materials like doors etc for everyone to learn.

Since you have more experience in this field it will be very nice of you to elaborate more on the disadvantages of imported doors

I'm still at the planning stage, so it may take a while (possibly December) to arrive Nigeria but I have the photos already from my local building merchants. See attached photos. Prices and size included.

So it is SOLID Oak or Sapele wood internal wooden door. I don't do internal metal/iron doors. Factory treated against termites ( so you don't need to perform animal sacrifice) and warping; guaranteed for 10 years minimum and ready for vanishing to your taste if you so wish.

You will need to buy locks (photo attached) guaranteed a lifetime, so you don't need to worry about locking yourself in as with Asia locks prevalent in Nigeria.

In price terms, you can land a PROPER SOLID internal wooden door in Nigeria (inclusive locks and keys) for N100K per door. However, I'm buying a bus to load in all items and ship them to Nigeria. I will sell off the bus (fire sale) which will bring the unit cost of each door to about N85k or thereabout.

I normally construct wooden internal doors in Nigeria for rentals. But this project is a family forever home, so I'm happy to import products I'm used to and trust and cry later about the cost.
Speaking of doors i was actually thinking of importing as well but i don´t know if it will well fitted in 9ja

PS: How i wish i have you and Egun experience cry

Abi na. It is shops like IKEA, Screwfix and various building merchants like Wickes why I can no longer step into ANY Nigerian market from Onitsha down to Alaba. Over the years living overseas, I have lost the skill to negotiate a chaotic and disorderly environment that are Nigerian markets and building merchants. And the dirt and mud and open sewage and miscreants and never do wells. I can't do this anymore. I have paid my dues.

So if I've got a project going, I just pay people to negotiate the disorderliness to buy materials or just call some tested Nairaland suppliers to deliver. I can't go to market to buy materials myself.

Contrast this when you step into IKEA. The orderliness, the transparency of price, the certainty of your purchase, the staging of the furniture to give you ideas on how to solve any furnishings problem at home. From kitchen to bathroom to living room to kids room and even how to showcase your 7.2 AV Receiver, your surround sound speakers and your TV stand or display unit, IKEA got it all covered.

It is sometimes a family day out visiting IKEA. After all the shopping, the family just go to the kitchen (restaurant) and do breakfast or lunch or dinner as the case may be. This orderliness for my family is priceless.
Gbam i rest my case, the bolded is the koko for me grin

The curtain will be inside and you are correct it will be shift to one side to open the window and the window nets is optional and most of our houses are without burglary proof.

Edit: i can upload a pic for you to see
n3xt:
Wonderful!

My wild thoughts here.

If you have the windows open inward, where will your blind or curtain be? Inside and I guess you’d shift them to one side when opening the window?

I’m trying to understand how this works.

What about window nets when the window open inward? Will that be outside before the burglary proof? Or it’d be completely knocked off?

Don’t mind me o and my irrational thoughts here. I’m building to naija code now and also considering naija mosquitoes.

If only you’re doing this because of cleaning on a single floor building, won’t a 6m ladder fix the occasional cleaning of maybe 6 - 8 windows you’d have? Or a wraparound terrace design? Or a juliet balcony (shown below)?

I am not convinced this design is right for this terrain.
PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Gigaset: 8:28pm On Apr 12, 2021
I will definitely ship the windows from here and hope to find a professional to install it correctly this time.

Thanks one more time you beat me to this grin
diordaves:
Now look at the photo you attached. Can you see how practicable the design is. Even if you are at the 17th floor, to clean it just open inward and clean inside and outside. You don't need men dangling on seil ropes just to clean your window in outward design.

Actually i´ve used the windows before in my parents house but sadly all the windows were install wrongly and i promised not to try it again, cry cry but based on the cleaning aspect i might do it again.

Is nice to see someone on this platform that i can relate with about building based on German standard, Nigerian builders and engineers are trying though but they are still far behind.

Am trying to do my ongoing project if not 100% maybe 95% German standard by God`s grace

Thanks for the rethink grin grin
diordaves:
I'm frustrated with our windows at home opening inwards. We engage periodically window cleaners at a cost just to clean windows. We don't have this problem when we are in Germany.

Windows in Germany open three dimensional: you can tilt them backwards open (only the top opens), you can open them halfway and you can open all through to clean inside and outside from within. You don't need to go outside.

Go for it. Sometimes one just has to break convention to improve the system. German Window designs as you already know are very functional and user friendly.
