An inmate at the Kgosi Mampuru II Central Correctional Centre in Tshwane was caught on camera while counting cash. Video of the otherwise disallowed act was shared on social media and immediately went viral.

The prisoner can even be heard bragging as he counts the Ksh 5000 notes. “I am eating money my brother. I am not playing,” the offender tells his fellow inmate as he continued to count the notes.

The video has since grabbed attention of the prison bosses and they are not happy. The inmates are not allowed be in possession of cash under the prison’s policy.

“It is a breach of security and contravention of the department’s policy on the cashless system for offenders in correctional facilities,” says Ofentse Morwane, communications co-coordinator in Gauteng.

The prisoner in question has already been picked up from his cell to unknown location as investigation into his unbecoming behavior gets underway. Prisoner filmed counting cash in his cell.

Muslim activist and President of the Muslim Rights Concern, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, whose daughter Dr. Jihad Anjorin (nee Akintola) wedded Abdulganiy Anjorin, a lawyer on Saturday, reportedly shunned their wedding reception. According to him, though the reception had his approval, however his two daughters got married without holding reception which he sees as “lavish spending.”

Punch reports that the wedding ceremony had about 24 persons in attendance. Akintola who spoke to Punch’s correspondent, said;

“Let me state, ab initio, and for the avoidance of any doubt, that I love my daughter, the lucky bride. She is an obedient girl, highly disciplined. She has never been wayward and I have never had cause to reprimand her in any way. .

She is the ideal daughter any father would crave. My son-in-law too, Barrister Anjorin, meets all my dreams of a husband for my daughter. I launched a struggle against wasteful spending a long time ago. .

I also made it a duty to publicly articulate strong objections to profligacy, both in public and private spending. I have called on governments to impose cow tax on anyone who slaughters more than one cow for a ceremony. .

I have publicly condemned the aso ebi syndrome. I know how to spend any amount on the education of my sons and daughters, but I can’t see any reason why I should spend lavishly on their nikah.

Expensive weddings scare young men, keep them single and waste the ladies’ time. Society wedding is not haram and it is in order for those who have more than enough money to spend on it. .

But, I frown upon those who go out of their way to pose as if they are comfortable, even though they are suffering and smiling. Nigerians love to live false life. They take loans and continue paying the loans for two or more years after the wedding. This is what I detest. I do not hate rich people.”

The police in Niger state has arrested a 65-year-old father of three, Patrick Kalu, for sexually molesting a 15-year-old boy whom he brought into his house a year ago with the promise of getting him a job.

The state police spokesperson, Abigail Unaeze, told journalists that the suspect who was arrested during the act, lured the unsuspecting victim from Karimo area of Abuja.

Speaking to newsmen, Kalu who hails from Ohafia in Abia state and has three children from his late wife, admitted having canal knowledge of the teenage boy, saying it was the hand work of the devil.

A 100 level student of Mechanical Engineering of the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH) and a nursing mother were killed Tuesday when a high-tension cable fell on the roof of their building at 14 Adak Uko Street in Calabar on Monday night.

The landlord of the building, Mr Obo, said the cable had always been falling in the past, but not on the roof. He said this time was the first time it fell on the roof and caused a fire that razed the building and killed the two people.

He said the affected building had 12 tenants.

He said since the incident occurred nobody from the fire service or the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company had shown up.

A friend of the deceased student, Mr Tolale Prince Harmony, reiterated that the cable had been falling several time in the past and the PHEDC office in Calabar had been approached severally to do something about it, but they kept referring the residents to Port Harcourt.

“They keep directing the people to call Port Harcourt. I am wondering, what does Port Harcourt have to do with this? I don’t understand. During the fire, they called the fire service and they said no water, no imprest, nothing to run. I don’t understand this. The cable fell on the building. And caused a fire that killed Inyang David and killed another lady, who just gave birth, and did child dedication just two Sundays ago. Cross River should come into play because it has affected a citizen of the state. The government should do something to ensure its citizens are in good condition.”

At leaset 2,000 Zambian villagers have been given the go ahead to sue mining giant Vedanta in a UK court.

The villagers who live in Nchanga in the country's Copperbelt province are suing for injury and damages to their property for what they say is numerous and ongoing toxic discharges around where they live.

Vedanta Resources has an asset base of almost $40bn (£30bn) spread across the world and Its Zambian subsidiary Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) had appealed against a ruling in May 2016 when a High Court judge decided the claim could proceed.

KCM which employs 16,000 people in Zambia had wanted the claims to be heard in the country. Reuters however reports that the judgment will play a significant role in defining the future liability of multinational companies based in the UK for alleged human rights and environmental abuses outside the country.

On Sunday morning, a man who was arrested near the White House was found to have nine guns and three knives in his car, according to a police report.

The man was initially stopped by law enforcement for allegedly urinating in public before Secret Service Uniform Division officers approached the man outside an art gallery in the area of 17th street and Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House.

According to the incident report obtained by CNN, the suspect told Secret Service officers and agents that he was going to the White House to speak with National Security Agency Director Admiral Mike Rogers and Defense Secretary James Mattis "for advice on missing paychecks and how to get the chip out of my head".

The man was discovered driving a 2009 Silver Nissan with Tennessee Fraternal Order of Police license plates. After being questioned by law enforcement and admitting to having multiple weapons he consented to a search of his vehicle.

The search turned up nine guns, three knives, brass knuckles, suppressors, and various types of ammunition. The firearms included multiple handguns as well as AR- and AK-style rifles. The suspect was taken to a DC facility "for mental observation" and later transported to a DC police station, where he was charged with multiple weapons violations.

Lawrence Abrokwa, the husband of comedienne, broadcaster and actress Afia Schwarznegger, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court on Monday.

This is after Lawrence, who is also an actor and comedian, pleaded not guilty to two counts of domestic violence, threat of harm, publication of obscene material and assault.

According to MYJoy News, the bail was granted after the plaintiff’s lawyer, Maurice Ampaw made the application before the court.

Recall, Mr Abrokwa, was arrested on August 30, 2017, when an official complaint of an alleged assault was received from the actress, known in private life as Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa.

The police suspecting that Abrokwa was the source of the leaked video, arrested and arraigned him before a court.

A nursing mother identified as Gift Igwe has been arrested by Policemen from the Igbogbo division after she set her husband's 10-year-old brother ablaze at their home on Adenugba Street, Agunfoye, Ikorodu.

The reason given for this unhuman behavior from Gift was simply because the little boy was unable to produce a pair of trousers when she demanded them.

Residents in the area, who heard the cries of the little boy, rushed to his aid and put out the fire, but during that process, he reportedly passed out.

The little boy identified as Chimobi, from Ishielu, Ebonyi State indigee has since been taken into protective custody by the Lagos State Government.

According to reports, after they were able to put out the fire, good samaritans rushed Chimobi to the Ikorodu General Hospital, Ikorodu.

It was gathered that, Chimobi was brought to Lagos in 2016 by his brother to live with his family. But since his arrival into the household, Gift had been abusing Chimobi. She did the worse form of abuse by setting him ablaze on Wednesday.
A neighbour said:

“He is the younger brother of the man, who is a security guard in a firm. He was not enrolled in any school after he was brought from the village. The brother wanted him to be assisting the wife, who had a baby about a year ago, with house chores and other things.
“The woman has been abusing him for some time now. There are marks of past floggings on his body. He also has sores.
“People in the community could no longer keep quiet when the last incident happened on Wednesday, September 6. She poured kerosene on the boy and lit him with a matchstick.”


Chimobi, who is still recovering from the burns said on Saturday, that he was enrolled in school before he was brought to Lagos from Ebonyi state in 2016, but that his brother and his wife have refused to enrol him in a school since he started living with them.


“I misplaced my trousers and ‘mummy’ (sister-in-law) poured kerosene on me and used a matchstick to light fire. People came to help me. I have not been going to school since they brought me from the village,” he said.


The Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, adding that Gift had been granted bail because she is still nursing a young child,.

He said she was mandated to report at the police station daily, while the case is being investigated.

The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, confirmed that little Chimobi has been taken into protective custody by Lagos State.

A middle-aged man, Akilu Alhaji Saidu, has confessed and explained how he beat to death his three-year-old step-daughter, Saratu Yahuza in Katsina state.

Saidu has since been arrested and detained by the Katsina State Police Command.

The incident occurred on the 17th of September when Saidu was said to have dragged her into an uncompleted building in Yankara village of Faskari Local Government.

He allegedly beat, twisted and broke the little three year old girl’s neck.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Gambo Isah, who confirmed the development, said one Yahuza Yakubu, purported to be the biological father of the girl, reported the case at the Police Station in Faskari.

Isah said the suspect had since confessed to the crime and during investigation, told the Police investigators that he acted under the influence of psychotropic substances.

Isah said the deceased was rushed to Funtua General Hospital, where a doctor confirmed her dead.

The striking members of the three non-academic staff unions in public universities namely the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU; Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU; and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, have suspended their strike. The associations went on an indefinite strike on Monday, September 11th over poor funding of universities amongst other issues.

Following an agreement reached by the Federal Government yesterday, the Joint Action Committee of the unions resolved to call off the two weeks old strike. Members have been directed to resume work on Monday, September 25th. See a press statement from the joint committee below...
