Justice Patricia Ajoku of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has ordered that one Onifade Gideon Idowu be remanded in prison pending when a case of alleged fraud filed against him is decided.

The accused was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, on a five-count charge bordering on forgery, fake representation, obtaining money under false pretence and internet-related offences.

He was said to have explored the internet, through series of fake representations, to illegally receive over N30 million (Thirty Million Naira) and other sums in foreign currencies from victims of his fraudulent activities across the world.

One of the charges reads: "That you Onifade Gideon Idowu (a.k.a Melina Seekng, Melina Shelly James) sometime between the year 2017-2019 at Ibadan, Oyo State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court took possession of the sum of N30,000,000 (Thirty Million Naira) paid into your account with UBA Bank Plc with account number - 2091840941 when you reasonably ought to have known that the said funds formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity of wit: fraud, and thereby committed an offence to section 15 (2)(d) of the MoneyLlaundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act."

Due to the not-guilty plea, counsel to the EFCC, Murtala Usman, prayed the court for trial date and order to remand the defendant in prison custody.

The judge granted the prayer as he adjourned the case to November 4, 2019 for trial, and ordered that Onifade be remanded in the Agodi prison.

SEVERAL former and serving government officials now live in fear over possible indictment in the $9.6 billion debt judgement obtained by the Irish firm, Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) Limited against Nigeria.

The federal government has gone to court in the United Kingdom to reverse the judgement, while the House of Representatives and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are probing where it all went wrong.

Investigators are said to have uncovered more information on the deal.

“Investigators are daily uncovering a web of conspiracies and connivance in violation of known best practices as well as local and international laws, that could be used to nail a number of former public office holders who broke the laws and aided the foreign firm to hoodwink past administrations as far as P&ID claims are concerned,” a well-placed source said on Saturday.

It was also gathered that the EFCC has established strong cases against a number of former federal government appointees.

The affected persons may be invited soon for questioning in relations to the ongoing probe.

A former presidential aide told The Nation that allegations made by the anti-graft agency against some people on the controversial deal could be just a tip of the iceberg.

He said: “We are all waiting to see how all these will farm out. The P&ID issue may just be the opportunity some people have been waiting for to nail some of us. It is not yet time to talk but I can tell you we are all worried with the turn of events.”

Another source, a former technical assistant to a minister said: “the ongoing saga over the P&ID is scandalous enough to put anybody with the remotest link to it in trouble. Names are being mentioned and everybody is critical.

“Nobody is considering the fact that many of us acted in official capacity and in fact, as instructed back then. So if you are asking me if I am worried, I say yes, I am worried and for good reasons too.”

He added that some of the discoveries are already giving Nigerians the impression that all those who served in the concerned administrations are culpable in the alleged shady deals.

He said a number of former officials in the Umar Musa Yar’ Adua administration have been questioned by investigators.

He added: “one bad official can tarnish the whole team.”

While expressing his readiness to be questioned, the Kogi-born Engineer urged that the ongoing investigations should be devoid of politics.

The EFCC, it was learnt, made more discoveries in its quest to unravel how some government officials allegedly aided the foreign firm to swindle the country. Reliable sources said that more persons would be invited for questioning soon. One of the sources said: “Statements by some of the people we have spoken to as well as findings by our legal team have uncovered some more people who played one role or the other in the scam.

“We are poised to listen to all of them and subsequently determine how culpable they are. One thing that I can tell you is that what led to this situation was a conspiracy that was planned right from the very moment the botched project was conceived.

“Those who participated in the conspiracy as well as the subsequent cover-ups know themselves and I am sure they are also expecting to be summoned.

“We have even received correspondences from some of them we have not invited. They claimed some reports mentioned them directly or indirectly. It is good we are making these discoveries.”

The House of Representatives commenced the investigation of the controversial issue a fortnight ago.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance on the need to look into act of negligence of the P&ID’s transaction by the Ministries of Justice and Petroleum Resources.

The motion was sponsored by Prof Julius Ihonvbere.

Consequently, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, constituted an ad-hoc committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the award of the contract.

The Nation learnt the committee has been questioning some people as part of its assignment.

Speaking on the matter, Ihonvbere said: “the House is alarmed that the agreement was somewhat shrouded in secrecy and as such apparently dubiously procured, as those who ought to know about its existence did not and more importantly, the relevant laws in Nigeria for the transaction to be consummated was not applied especially, Part IV of the Bureau of Public Procurement Act 2007 which deals with the Fundamental Principles of Procurement.

“The House is worried that the lack of diligent prosecution of cases in which Nigeria is involved by those whose duty it is to do so, is due to our tendency to either politicise everything or focus more on personal interests, or failure on the part all parties involved.”

The ad hoc Committee chaired by Sada Soli (APC, Katsina) is to recommend appropriate sanctions where necessary without fear or favour or preference for status in line with Order 14 of the Standing Orders of the House, against those involved in the contract that led to judgment debt.

The House further resolved to initiate a process of reviewing all Agreements and Treaties signed by Nigeria through the appropriate committees to create opportunities to discover anomalies and avoid a repeat in the future.

Five notorious miscreants alongside nine prostitutes with illegal drugs were yesterday, arrested around Mile 2/Festac area of #LagosState during an early morning clamp down on illegal brothels by the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce). .

The brothel was said to be noted for harboring criminals who rob unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables and also serves as an outlet for the sale of illegal drugs such as Indian hemp, Tramadol, and other sex enhancement drugs, especially to underaged children. .

Also, it had previously been demolished by the Agency during the clearing of illegal structures, shanties and containerized shops from Eric Moore Road down to Trade Fair axis. .

However, the demolished brothel had been re-built by the owner after it was demolished for illegal construction on road setbacks. .

Parading the suspects, the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi said the raid became imperative following complaints that criminal activities around Mile 2 towards Festac were perpetrated by miscreants who reside in the illegal brothel.

Man allegedly rapes colleague to death, keeps corpse for three days in Ogun

A 27-year-old man, Adenuga Eniola has been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for allegedly raping a co-worker, identified as Faith Jude to death at Lafenwa, in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama paraded the suspect alongside other 18 suspects for various crimes such as rape, robbery and cultism, among others at the Police State headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta .

Makama was represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Edward Ajogun, said the suspect, a mobile money agent, was arrested for his involvement in the murder after he went to report the incident at Lafenwa Police Station.

He said the suspect reportedly committed the crime on September 16 and reported last Thursday at the Police Station.

The Commissioner of Police said the suspect told his men at the station that he discovered the lifeless body of his co-worker, covered with canopy at the front of their shop.

According to Makama, the suspect took advantage of the downpour on a fateful day to perpetuate his heinous act by allegedly gagging the mouth of the deceased with a piece of cloth to stop her from screaming while he was raping her.

The Police boss further explained that Eniola kept the body of the deceased in his shop for three days after the incident but was forced to report following the odour oozing from the place he kept the body.

He added that the suspect however reportedly confessed to the crime after he was grilled over the death of his colleague.

He said, “On close examination, it was discovered that there were marks of violence on the body of the deceased which raised the suspicion that she was murdered.

“Based on the discovery, the complainant, Adenuga Eniola was professionally interrogated and it was discovered that he was the person that actually killed the victim.

“He confessed to the crime and stated that the deceased, a co-worker came to the shop to collect money for their boss.

“He took advantage of the downpour then and grabbed the deceased, gagged her mouth with a piece of cloth while he raped her.

“Having had his way with the girl, he discovered that she had given up the ghost due to suffocation. He is under arrest with the incident, while the case is undergoing investigation at the Homicide Section of the command’s Criminal Investigation Department.”

However, the suspect who claimed to have regretted his action begged the government to tamper justice with mercy.

He said, “I regret my action because I did not know what came over me. I am not a womaniser, I don’t know why I involved myself in this.”

A 30-year-old lawyer, Bayo Adedokun, on Wednesday appeared in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly threatening to kill Sen. Buruji Kashamu and Alhaji Muniru Ogunleyetwo over land disagreement.

Adedokun, whose address was not given, is charged with four counts of conspiracy, attempted murder and conduct likely to cause breach of the peace.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Steven Molo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in August at Ogombo village in Eti-Osa area of Lagos.

Molo alleged that the defendant hired 10 thugs to kill the complainants claiming that a portion of land they were occupying belonged to his family.

He said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace.

The offence, he said, contravenes the provisions of sections 56(a), 168(d), 230(1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate O.O. Oshin admitted the defendant to bail on self recogintion and ordered him to deposit his certificate of Call to Bar to the court.

Oshin adjourned the case until Nov. 14 for mention.
