Donald Trump has ordered series of federal executions even as his days in the White House come to an end.


The Trump administration together with the Justice Department, has scheduled five prisoner executions before President-elect Joe Biden's 20th January inauguration, breaking the 130-year-old precedent of halting prisoner executions during a presidential transition.


And if all executions take place, Trump will be the country's most prolific execution president in more than a century, overseeing the executions of 13 death row inmates since 2020 July.


According to the Justice Department, the five executions are to begin this week, starting with 40-year-old Brandon Bernard and 56-year-old Alfred Bourgeois. They are both scheduled to be put to death at a penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.


The move by the Trump admin has been criticized by Democrats as worrying as it comes just weeks before Biden - who has said he will seek to end the death penalty - takes office.


Trump appointed Attorney General, William Barr has said his justice department is simply upholding existing law.

In July 2019, Barr announced the scheduled executions of five death row prisoners.

"Congress has expressly authorised the death penalty," the country's top legal official said in a statement at the time. "The justice department upholds the rule of law - and we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system."

Earlier in December, the Justice department relased a memo detailing the crimes committed by the prisoners on death row.

The selected inmates had been convicted of murdering or raping children and the elderly, Barr said.

The US Justice Department is reportedly investigating the finances of Hunter Biden, the son of US president-elect Joe Biden.

A person familiar with the matter has told the Associated Press that the investigation includes scrutinising some of his Chinese business dealings and other transactions.

The tax investigation was launched in 2018, the year before the elder Biden announced his candidacy for president

On Wednesday, Hunter Biden said he learned about the investigation for the first time the previous day.

He said in a statement, “I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs.”

The federal government has been accused of lying by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on an agreement being reached on strike suspension date.



ASUU's National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi who countered the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige on claim of the union promising to resume on December 9, 2020, stated that there is nothing in the government offer of November 27, 2020 to suggest that conclusion.



Ogunyemi reiterated that there will be no need for strikes if government implemented the agreement they reached, and further averred that the principal officers and trustees who constituted the core of representatives of ASUU at negotiation meetings with government, were not constitutionally empowered to suspend any strike action.

He said;

“ASUU leadership did not reach any understanding with government to suspend the strike on December 9, 2020, and there is nothing in the government offer of November 27, 2020 to suggest that conclusion as allegedly claimed by the Minister of Labour and Employment.

“At our last meeting in the office of the Minister of Labour and Employment on November 27, 2020, the ASUU leadership promised to faithfully present the latest government offer to its members through the established tradition.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu was on Wednesday December 9, sworn-in by President Buhari for his second five-year term as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Davido has paid tribute to his personal bodyguard, Ogbeide Tijani Olamilekan, who died on Tuesday, December 8, after a long battle with an undisclosed ailment.

Ogbeide's who served as Davido's personal bodyguard for 11 years, died on Tuesday leaving behind a wife and children. He was 36 years old.

Adams Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said he will reject another chance to chair the party.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has commented on the killing of 43 rice farmers by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state over the weekend.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state on Monday November 30, the minister said Nigeria is still at the mercy of terorrists because they are denied the ability to purchase weapons.

Two men identified as Adekunle Osho, 31, and Chinedu Ugwu, 34, have been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of armed robbery by an Ekiti State High Court.

The two robbers who were handed the sentence on Tuesday November 24, were reportedly involved in armed robbery and also linked to a stolen vehicle

They were convicted for robbing one Chief Ojo Gbenga of his Toyota Camry car and N150,000 cash on or about November 14, 2014 at Oke Ila, Tinuola area of Ado Ekiti. It was alleged that the men who blocked their victim with their own car while on his way home, shot him in the leg.

The Governors from the South-South region of the country have lamented the underdevelopment of their region, stating that their resources are used to develop other parts of the country.

Ifeanyi Okowa, chairman of the south-south governors forum said this during the regional stakeholders meeting with the presidential delegation led by Ibrahim Gambari, chief of staff to the president on Tuesday November 24.
