The Meiran primary health center at Agbado/Oke-Odo local council development area of Lagos state has been shut down after some health workers at the center tested positive for the novel Coronavirus.

This was disclosed in a statement released by Mosunmola Olabige, the chief press secretary to David Famuyiwa, chairman of Agbado/Oke-Odo on Sunday, January 10.

“In a swift reaction to contain and avert the spread of coronavirus in the communities, the Chairman of Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA has ordered the immediate closure of the Meiran Primary Health Centre.

This became necessary as some members of staff of the health centre tested positive for the dreaded virus.

The Chairman also ordered the immediate contact tracing of their colleagues and associates as well as patients who visited the facility in the last few days.

He also used the medium to admonish the community members to take responsibility for their health and lives by avoiding social events that attract large gatherings, and by adhering strictly to the laid-down guidelines on the use of face masks, regular handwashing and the use of sanitisers, maintaining adequate social distancing while in public places in order to flatten the curve of the pandemic.”

Since the first cases of the virus were detected in the state in February 2020, Lagos has remained the epicenter in Nigeria with 35,448 confirmed cases. 28,734 patients have so far been treated and discharged while 256 deaths have sadly been recorded.

The President/Chief Executive, Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, saw his total net worth drop by $900m on Friday as his flagship company emerged the biggest loser at the end of trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which is a ranking of the world’s 500 richest people, showed that his wealth fell from $18.4bn on Thursday to $17.5bn on Friday, making him the 114th wealthiest man in the world, down from 106th the previous day.

Dangote’s net worth had risen from $15.5bn on December 13 to close the year 2020 at $17.8bn. It further gained $600m in the first seven days of 2021, but lost all of it and more last Friday.

The share price of Dangote Cement Plc, the country’s biggest listed company and Africa’s largest cement producer, tumbled by 8.13 per cent to close at N225 on Friday from N244.90 on Thursday.

Dangote was the only Nigerian on the list of 500 billionaires and retained his position as Africa’s richest person as of Friday.

“The majority of Dangote’s fortune is derived from his 86 per cent stake in publicly traded Dangote Cement. He holds the shares in the company directly and through his conglomerate, Dangote Industries,” Bloomberg said.

His most valuable closely held asset is a fertiliser plant with capacity to produce up to 2.8 million tonnes of urea annually, according to the international news agency.“A $12bn oil refinery that is currently being developed in Nigeria isn’t included in the valuation because it’s not yet operational and construction costs are calculated to outweigh its current value,” it said.

Fabrizio Soccorsi, the personal doctor of Pope Francis has died from COVID-19 complications.

Catholic News Agency reported that the 78-year-old physician was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for a previous health issue on December 26. While he was dealing with an “oncological pathology,” COVID was the cause of death, the Vatican’s newspaper L’Osservatore Romano reported.

In August 2015, Pope Francis named him his personal physician after not renewing the term of papal doctor Patrizio Polisca, who was also head of the Vatican’s healthcare services.

Since the pontificate of St. Pope John Paul II, the two positions had been tied together, but Pope Francis diverged from this custom by choosing Soccorsi, a doctor from outside the Vatican.

The Pope recently declared it was within Catholic doctrine, and actually an ethical obligation, to receive vaccination against COVID and said he would be receiving his first dose shortly.

“It is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process,” the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said in a statement approved by Francis in December.

Facebook user, Godwin George, who narrated the said event on his page, said he saw a large crowd attacking a lady on Sunday morning, January 10, around 9.30am at Abak road while she was being stripped naked.

President-elect Joe Biden on Friday said President Donald Trump’s decision to stay away from his inauguration was a “good thing”.

The Democrat called it “one of the few things he and I have ever agreed on”.

The incoming President spoke to reporters after he introduced cabinet nominees.

Biden lamented Trump’s conduct and comments over the years, adding that the Republican had ridiculed America.

Biden called Trump “one of the most incompetent presidents in the history of the United States of America”.

The Federal Government has countered claims of Nigeria becoming a 'failed state' under the administration of President Buhari.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed who linked the claim to the security challenges in the country, averred that characterization of Nigeria as a ‘failing’ state is a combination of wishful thinking of naysayers and evil machinations of those who don’t wish Nigeria well.

Affirming that Nigeria would rise to become a more respected member of the comity of nations, Lai Mohammed further insisted that the West African nation has made tremendous progress in tackling bandits and Boko Haram terrorists.

Recounting how insurgents launched attacks in various places in the country, the Minister said the recent swift response and rescue of the 344 kidnapped Kankara schoolboys in Katsina State from bandits attested to the claim.

He added that Buhari has continued to provide all the necessary platforms on land, air and sea to support the fight against criminals and terrorists in the country, and also leading the country in making prorgress in many areas including infrastructural development, agriculture and power.

Mohammed said;

“You would remember that for the past two decades or so, some pseudo-analysts have been predicting the country’s implosion.

“That has not happened, hence they have found a new watchword – failing or failed state!

” It’s all a ruse aimed at depicting Nigeria as being in a constant state of anarchy so they can achieve their nefarious objectives for the country.

COVID19 patients in Abuja speak from their hospital beds, recount their experiences (video)

As Nigeria currently battles the second wave of COVID19 which is said to be deadlier than the first one, some of the patients at the Thisday Dome treatment and Isolation center in Abuja have shared their experiences since they contracted the disease.

Most of the patients in an interview with Arise TV, said they have no idea how they contracted the viral disease.

One of the patients said she started off by treating malaria until she was tested for COVI19 and discovered to be positive.

''I came back from a trip. I was tested negative before I took the flight. I was treating malaria. I had all the symptoms and I never thought of COVID.

I have underlying medical issues. I have a heart condition, I have BP but God saved me.

I never believed it (COVID19) but now I am seeing it real. My elder sister that used to laugh at me when I used to use sanitizer and other things, she cried because she was the one taking me to places. She now believes there is COVID. There is COVID'' she said

Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, says Catholicism in Nigeria is way too much about money, thanksgiving, and fundraising and this amongst many other reasons made her stop attending Catholic churches in Nigeria.

The 43-year-old novelist stated this during an interview with media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. According to her, she still considers herself a Catholic nominally and only attends masses outside Nigeria whenever she finds a “progressive” Catholic community that upholds humanity.

“I grew up Catholic. Catholicism was very important to me. It‘s almost like a culture, not just a religion. So even if you leave the Catholic Church, it’s in you. Today, I don’t like to talk about religion because I don’t know,” she said.

I think of myself as agnostic and questioning. Catholicism holds you tight. There are many other protestant denominations that are not so. It’s all-inclusive. ‘You cannot eat before mass. You have to go to confession.’

There are so many rules. It teaches you guilt in a way that I don’t think so many protestant denominations do. I’m Catholic, nominally. I still feel protective of some things about the Catholic Church. But I don’t attend it in Nigeria.

Nigerian Catholicism is way too much about money, fundraising, and thanksgiving. Some in the east even look at who’s wearing gold. I think the focus of religion should be things Nigerian Catholicism doesn’t focus on.

Culturally, I call myself a catholic. But if being religious means performing and going to confession, I’m not. I don’t go to church in Nigeria. Outside the country? Certainly not often. When I find a progressive Catholic Church, I go.

There’s still something beautiful about the mass. I find Latin beautiful, the priests sweeping up in their dresses, and the sense of community. But there’s also a lot that I quarrel with. It’s the pope I love because he’s so human.

Hyper-conservative Catholics don’t like him. But if they read Catholic history, they should know there have been people like him who have reformed the church. I respect religion in general while questioning some of its excesses. ”she said

Chimamanda also shared on Nollywood movies and why she hardly watches them.

The Kwara state government has announced January 11 as the date for the resumption of academic activities for all basic and tertiary schools in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor of the state and Spokesman for Technical Committee on COVID-19, Rafiu Ajakaye, made the announcement in a statement issued in Ilorin, the state capital on Friday, January 1.

“Government has directed that the tertiary institutions should put in place appropriate safety protocols to prevent the spread of the virus on their campuses. The coordinating ministry is to work with the state technical committee on COVID-19 and other stakeholders to ensure that the schools do not take safety rules for granted.

Specifically, the use of face mask is mandatory on the campus and in lecture rooms. Authorities are not to allow anyone, students or otherwise, into college facilities without the use of the face mask.

Similarly, elementary schools in the state are scheduled to resume on January 18, 2021, subject to new developments on the pandemic.

While COVID-19 appears to have come to stay and our communities have to cope with the new normal, the government urges everyone to take responsibilities for their own safety by adhering to protocols already outlined to flatten the curve of transmission.”the statement read

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that a “super gonorrhea” is spreading fast due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The agency says the disease is spreading due to actual antibiotic overuse for those infected with the novel coronavirus.

The agency also states the sexually transmitted infection (STI) may become even more resistant to the recommended treatments like azithromycin, which typically is used for chest and sinus infections. Azithromycin has seen an increase in usage during the pandemic.

"Such a situation can fuel the emergence of resistance in gonorrhea including gonorrhea superbug (super gonorrhea) or gonorrhea with high-level resistance to current antibiotics recommended to treat it," a WHO spokesperson told British media outlet The Sun.

The new strain does not respond to the normal first-line treatments, making it even more dangerous and uncomfortable for those infected, according to the report.

Doctors and medical experts have long warned of the possibility that “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant could become more commonplace, and this is one example of such a thing happening.

Youtube star, Grace Victory in coma with Coronavirus just one day after giving birth to her baby boy


Youtube star, Grace Victory, has been placed in a medically induced coma a day after giving birth to her son.

According to the message posted to the British vlogger's Instagram on Monday, Dec. 28, Grace tested positive for COVID-19 two weeks ago while in the third trimester of her pregnancy. Her condition worsened and doctors induced the birth on Christmas Eve, December 24, which was not due until February 2021.

"As you guys know, Grace gave birth on Christmas Eve to a beautiful baby boy, who is currently doing so well, he's incredible," the post stated. "We Love him so much. Grace developed Covid-19 two weeks ago and although her symptoms were mild at first, they worsened as the days went on. Which meant they had [to] deliver the baby as soon as possible, as she was just too unwell to carry on with the pregnancy."

''The 30-year-old YouTuber entered the ICU the day after giving birth and is currently in a medically induced coma.''

"Grace was admitted into intensive care on Christmas Day due to issues with her breathing & therefore they had to make the decision of placing her into an Induced Coma, to give her body the rest it needs, in order to recover," the post continued.

The message added, "She's currently stable but please keep her in your thoughts & prayers."

A woman and her young son have been killed by gunmen in Nagu village, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

The armed men killed the woman, her son and her brother-in-law after razing part of Nagu village in the early hours of Sunday, December 27.

The attacks also left several persons injured while many have reportedly fled their homes to neighbouring villages for fear of being killed.

Confirming the incident, a former lawmaker that represented Katina-Ala East constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr Ianna Jato, said those killed in the attack were memebers of his family.

"The armed men came around 3 am, yesterday, and attacked Nagu, which is my village. They burnt part of the village after which they killed my brother’s wife, her son and another of my brother," he said.

“I cannot understand why they did this, but those behind the attack just called me a few minutes ago with the phone of my brother’s wife, which they took away after killing the woman

Edo State Police Command on Friday December 25, confirmed the arrest of three suspects who killed a female trader after robbing and gang raping her.

The incident happened along Evbuosa Road, near in Obozogbe in Orhionmwon local government of the state while the woman was on her way to the market.

It was gathered that the suspects dispossessed the deceased of N30,000 before dragging her into a nearby bush, where they took a turn to rape and later left her with life-threatening injuries which resulted to her death.

The vigilante group in the area said some persons who were on the farm heard the woman screaming but could not find her when they got to the scene because the suspects dragged her further into the bush.

According to vigilante member, a shirt was found in the area was used to trace the owner in the community.

The owner later identified as Destiny Osa was subsequently arrested by the locals and handed over to men of the Ugo Police Division, who in turn handed him over to men of the Anti Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit of the Edo State Police Command for further investigation.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a suspect who broke into a warehouse located at Tal'udu Quarters and stole goods worth N8m.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday, December 24, said the suspect, Salmanu Mohammed Bashir, 36, confessed to the crime.

The suspect revealed how he damaged the padlock, replaced it with a new one of the same colour and size.

"On the 27/11/2020 at about 1020hrs, a report was lodged that a Hijet Pick-up Motor Vehicle with Reg. No. KMC 24 XY, white colour, loaded with Building Materials and Furniture was seen with suspected stolen properties," the statement says.

A Nigerian lady, Adesekonge-Ire has informed intending suitors that she does not believe in sex before marriage.

"Before you DM me, I 'm a Christian and I believe in waiting till marriage for sexual relations. tnx" said Konge, who is proudly a Feminist.

Her tweet elicited comments from the men who said if she has to wait till marriage to have sex then she should also not ask for money before marriage.

Others questioned her feminist stance as according to them, a Christian shouldn't be a Feminist.

Reacting to the comments, Konge urged women to try and be financially independent as apparently from the responses, men only give money to women in exchange for sex.

"The responses to that tweet proves that men only give money to women because they want sex in return. Women, wake up! Make your money so these men would know to have something better to offer in a relationship asides money. You are not a sex worker, stop giving sex for money."
