Nigeria’s food inflation increased by 1.26 percent from 18.30 percent in November 2020 to 19.56 percent in December.

This is according to the December 2020 consumer price index/inflation report released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, on Friday, Jan 15, 2021.

This is the highest jump in food inflation since May 2016 when it rose from 13.19 percent in April of that year to 14.86 percent.

The NBS said the increase in food inflation was caused by increases in prices of bread and cereals, potatoes, yam and other tubers, meat, fruits, vegetable, fish and oils and fats.

According to the report, the all items index which measures inflation increased from 14.87 percent in November to 15.75 percent in December.

This represents an increase of 0.86 percentage points.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has confirmed that the Third Mainland bridge will be reopened to traffic by February 15.

Fashola gave the update during the inspection of construction work on major roads and bridges in Lagos State today January 14.

According to the Minister, the closure of the third mainland bridge is delaying the scheduled maintenance on Falomo bridge.

The third mainland bridge has been shut July 24, 2020. The repairs were expected to have been concluded by the end of January 2021. However, the ministry and its contractors said they lost two weeks to the EndSARS protests and had to extend the completion date by two weeks.

Manchester United defender, Timothy Fosu-Mensah has completed his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen for £1.8m.

The 23-year-old defender leaves Old Trafford having made 30 first-team appearances over the past six-and-a-half seasons since making his debut as a substitute in the 3-2 win over Arsenal in February 2016.

US President Donald Trump has been permanently banned from Snapchat, according to a statement by the platform.

The move by Snap to permanently ban Trump from the social app comes after Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, Twitch, and other internet platforms issued similar bans. On Tuesday, YouTube suspended Trump’s channel for seven days for a video violating its policies prohibiting incitement to violence.

"Last week we announced an indefinite suspension of President Trump's Snapchat (SNAP) account, and have been assessing what long term action is in the best interest of our Snapchat community," a Snapchat spokesperson said.

"In the interest of public safety, and based on his attempts to spread misinformation, hate speech, and incite violence, which are clear violations of our guidelines, we have made the decision to permanently terminate his account."

20 doctors have contracted COVID-19 within the past three weeks in Kwara State.

President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Dr Badmus Habeeb, disclosed this to Channels Television during a phone interview on Wednesday January 13.

Habeeb who said the association are battling with the pandemic “based on the available resources”, noted that the discovery of vaccines have brought hope and relief for everyone.

He however lamented that there is a poor resource setting in the country, where the necessities to make the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines easy and possible are not readily available.

The UITH-ARD President said the vaccines have so far proven to be effective and therefore, urged Nigerians to get vaccinated when it arrives while adhering strictly to other COVID-19 guidelines.

He said;

Buhari and Governors should resign if they are unable to tackle insecurity – Femi Falana's wife, Funmi

Mrs Funmi Falana, a Lagos-based lawyer and wife of human rights activist Femi Falana has asked President Buhari and the 36 state governors to resign if they are unable to tackle insecurity.

Speaking in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, during her yearly New Year celebration with motherless children, Funmi stated that Nigerians are afraid to go out because they are unsure of their security.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick’s bid to become a FIFA Council member and any other candidate vying for various positions in March’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) elections in Morocco will be subjected to FIFA’s ratification.

Pinnick is looking to replace Guinea’s Almamy Kabele Camara at the 37-member FIFA Council which is the main decision-making body of the world football body that sets the vision for FIFA and global football.

But CAF said in a release on Sunday that “At the request of the Interim President of CAF, Mr. Constant Omari, a virtual meeting of the CAF Emergency Committee was held on Saturday with the committee deciding that the Governance Committee of CAF together with the FIFA Review Committee must determine as soon as possible a date for formalizing the final list of all the candidates for all the elections, namely: members of the CAF Executive Committee, FIFA Council members and CAF President.

Also, The Governance Committee shall submit, to the FIFA Review Committee, the candidatures received for the position of CAF President, with the understanding that the President of CAF will become the Vice-President of FIFA.

Yet CAF has ruled that just two of the five candidates for March’s presidential elections are eligible so far, former Ivorian football federation president Jacques Anouma and current Senegal FA president Augustin Senghor; other candidates are hopefully to get approval before the elections in March.

Pinnick’s preferred candidate and Mamelodi Sundowns owner, Patrice Motsepe and Mauritania FA president Ahmed Yahya need further checks before either can be added to the list.

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Sunday, said amending the Electoral Act without a commitment from stakeholders to do things differently, cannot guarantee free and fair elections.

Yakubu said this in an address delivered on his behalf by the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye at a three-day retreat of the Joint Technical Committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2020 which ended in Abuja on Sunday.

The INEC boss expressed gratitude to the Senate Committee on INEC and the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters; for working together to produce a new legal framework for the conduct of elections.

He, however said, “It must be borne in mind that amending the electoral legal framework will not automatically guarantee or lead to improvement in the management and conduct of elections.

“The Constitution and the Electoral Act can only be effective through the action and inaction of the critical stakeholders in the electoral process.

“The Constitution and Electoral Act can enhance the electoral process if the electoral management body, political parties and the electoral actors, the security agencies, the media and civil society organisations, effectively play their roles.

“Nigeria’s democracy and electoral processes will become more robust if critical stakeholders in the process resolve to restore sovereignty to the people as the true determinant of the outcome.

“This renewed drive is timely and must be sustained and approached with a sense of history and urgency.

“The reform must be impactful and should be concluded by the first quarter of 2021.’’

The Attorney General of the Federation, and the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), in his address, pledged to work with the technical committee to ensure unhindered presidential assent to the bill.

Malami who was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reform and International Relations Office, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu said, “I will continue to work more closely with the National Assembly to ensure that the bill is eventually passed as scheduled.”

The Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, Kabiru Gaya, announced that, “We have received 24 written memorandum and verbal presentations from different interest groups. There is no doubt that we have more than enough valuable inputs from Nigerians for consideration.”

Also at the event, Head of Governance and Stability at the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, Sam Waldock, has said, the United Kingdom has so far invested over £50m on Nigeria’s electoral processes since 2015.

He said, “The United Kingdom is a proud supporter of elections and democratic processes in Nigeria. In the last five years, the UK has invested over £50m into Nigeria’s democratic process.

“We recognise Nigeria as the largest democracy in Africa, and a leading member of the Commonwealth of nations.

“It will therefore be good to have a robust comprehensive system placed far ahead of the general election so that adequate preparations could be made.”

Chimamanda Adichie gave her opinion about Biafra during her interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

The renowned writer wondered how Igbos can achieve Biafra when they can't unite towards selecting a Nigerian president who is from the region.

The 43-year-old said Igbo people need to rethink how they strategise politically before talking about secession.

She said: "There is no Biafra. There are new movements but, for me, it’s a question of being practical. Where would the border be? What is propelling these movements is a sense of marginalisation, which I think is completely valid.

"But this idea that the answer is independence is what I’m not convinced of. Nobody has made a logical case for me. Quite frankly, I’ve observed the terrible leadership that we have in the southeast.

"Igbo people cannot unite if, for example, we say we want an Igbo president. And then we’re talking about Biafra. There is a lot of political work we need to do in the southeast.

"We need to do a lot of rethinking on how we strategise politically before we can talk about Biafra."

She also spoke about misogyny in the South East and its effect on politics.

She said: "There are things I quarrel with, in Igbo culture. It’s misogynistic, as are many cultures. That’s the problem. The world is misogynistic. At my father’s funeral, they showed where the widow, my mother, would sit.

"And they showed where the sons in the extended family (umunna) would sit. That’s where those coming would go to present whatever they bring. It’s the sons’. And that was the end. My father had three daughters. There was no place for them.

"I raised the question and a man in my umunna said we would have to loiter around. There’s a problem with that.

"There’s a woman who apparently is going to run for governor in Anambra state.

"I’m having a conversation with a group of people and what they’re saying is, ‘Can a woman rule Anambra?’ Do you need a dangling organ to rule a state? It’s hard enough for both male and female politicians.

A combined team of soldiers and operatives from Osun Command of Department of State Services on Monday December 28, arrested six members of Coalition for Revolution in Osun State while they were planning to converge for a walk in Osogbo, the state capital.

Osogbo-based human rights lawyer, Alfred Adegoke said those arrested were later moved to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo where they were detained.

Adegoke who alleged that two of the men were brutalised by the security operatives, said they were released after he intervened.

Republican leaders in the US congress have rejected a resolution acknowledging Joe Biden as the president-elect, the latest effort by Capitol Hill Republicans controlled by Trump to refuse to accept the election results even though it's been clear for weeks that President Donald Trump lost.

In a private meeting on Tuesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer offered a motion to affirm that it is preparing for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Then in a dramatic turn of events, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt of Missouri voted with House Republican Leader, Kevin McCarthy to block the motion, a move that prevented the inaugural committee from publicly accepting that the January 20 inauguration will be for Joe Biden.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the Rules Committee, voted with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Hoyer voting in favor of recognizing Joe Biden as the president elect.

Daisy Coleman’s mother commits suicide four months after her Netflix star daughter killed herself on FaceTime call with her boyfriend


The heartbroken mother of Daisy Coleman has died by suicide just four months after her daughter took her own life.

Melinda Coleman died on Sunday evening, Dec 6.

SafeBae, a youth-led sexual assault prevention group created by Daisy Coleman, made the announcement to their Instagram page.

The post reads: “We are in shock and disbelief to share with our SafeBae family, that we lost Melinda Coleman to suicide this evening.



“The bottomless grief of losing her husband, Tristan and Daisy was more than she could face most days.

“Melinda was a gifted veterinarian, devoted mother and wife, and talented body builder. More than anything, she loved and believed in her children. It is no accident that she created some of the most gifted, passionate, and resilient children.

“Our hearts are with Logan and Charlie. There are no words for our sadness, only that if you are struggling with trauma or depression, you are not alone.”

Just hours before taking her life, Melinda posted a series of posts and pictures of her late daughter, Daisy to her Facebook page.

On August 5, 23-year-old Daisy committed suicide after being candid about her traumatic sexual assault in the 2016 Netflix documentary “Audrie & Daisy.”

Daisy’s body was discovered by authorities after her mother, Melinda, asked them to perform a welfare check.

Daisy died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while talking to her boyfriend on FaceTime. Melinda later confirmed her daughter’s death on social media.

Family and friends have been tthrown into mourning following the death of a young Ugandan man just few hours after his wedding

Reports say Roy Jairus Watuulo died in the early hours of Sunday, December 6, hours after he tied the knot with his wife, Anitah Nabuduwa on Saturday, December 5 in Kampala.

According to close friends and relatives, Roy started complaining about feeling unwell moments after the wedding reception. He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead a few minutes past midnight.

The deceased is said to be in his late 20s and the son of a University professor. They had their traditional wedding in November 2020.

Meanwhile, friends and and colleagues have taken to Facebook to mourn the late Roy. A colleague, Lutoto Charity Martha, wrote;

2015: I rejected Jonathan and backed Buhari because I’m not tribalistic - Rotimi Amaechi says

Minister of Transport and former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, says he backed the presidential ambition of President Buhari in 2015 because he isn't a tribalistic Nigeria.

 

Amaechi said this when he received politicians defecting from PDP to APC in Rivers state on Saturday, December 5.

A drug dealer tried to fake his own death during a desperate attempt to avoid going to jail.



The notorious criminal named Gabriel C – and known in Belgium as "Lange Vingers" (Long Fingers) – staged photographs of himself being "tortured" to death, with the word “thief” being carved into his chest.



He released the images of himself seemingly slumped in a chair with his hands bound and fake injuries across his body.

The images were presented as proof he had been tortured to death by a rival drug gang after he had been busted for stealing cocaine that he had been tasked with ensuring made passage to a port in Antwerp.



However authorities failed to fall for the "tortured to death" ploy and he has since been arrested and charged.



Gabriel C will now be jailed for four years and fined £16,193 for his part in a 113kg cocaine smuggling operation dating back to 2016.



The criminal had attempted to sell the drugs he siphoned off from the shipment he was supposed to supervise.



Last year, he went into hiding after the Albanian drugs gang he stole from made him a marked man.

#End SARS: There was no single corpse at the Lekki tollgate. Some people there were seeing double- Army chief, Tukur Buratai says

Chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai, says that contrary to what some persons have reported, there was no single corpse at the Lekki tollgate on October 20 when the military came and fired shots while #ENDSARS protesters gathered to demand an end to police brutality.

According to him, some people saw double during the shooting incident.

The Cable reports that the Army Chief shared this opinion when he spoke at the decoration of 39 newly promoted major-generals on Friday, December 4. He opined that a spiritual warfare seminar held by the army helped in preventing deaths at the protest ground. In his words

“I am glad that we held the Spiritual Warfare Seminar on Wednesday and most of the decorated generals today are graduates of the seminar,” he said.

I must say that the spiritual warfare seminar we had last time helped us during the last #EndSARS protest to the extent that there was no single corpse, but some persons were seeing double at Lekki toll gate in Lagos state.

Duncan Mighty has replied Nigerians who are criticizing him for bringing his marital crisis to social media.

On Friday, December 4, the singer in several posts, accused his wife, Vivien, and her family members of plotting to inflict him with an ailment and thereafter take possession of his properties. He alleged that Vivien confessed this to him and that he has video recordings of her confessing to him. The singer also alleged that their daughter, Mitchell, isn't his.

Some Nigerians felt his post was unnecessary. They opined that he should have addressed his marital crisis in private and not publicly.

Diehard fans of actress Regina Daniels, on Friday, December 4, staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt after her husband stated in an interview that he can marry another wife after Regina.

In a fresh interview, Ned said that he got married to Regina within three weeks after they met. He said he doesn’t believe in dating before marriage. The businessman who is also a politician went on to state that Regina knows that he can marry another wife as he is from a polygamous background.

Well, Regina’s diehard fans went on the streets of Port Harcourt carrying placards as they objected to Nwoko’s comments. According to them, ”Ned Nwoko must not marry another wife after Regina”.

Woman who stabbed seven-year-old girl to death in front of her parents on Mother's Day found not guilty of murder

A paranoid schizophrenic woman, Eltiona Skana who murdered a seven year old girl, has now been freed after it was revealed the woman was smuggled into the UK in a lorry and has been hospitalized severally in mental institutions.

Though she refused treatment, Skana was released back into the community on Friday, December 4, after her case was dropped on mental health grounds.

Emily Jones was killed as she ran towards her mum on Mother's Day this year. She had been playing on her scooter in Queen's Park, Bolton, on March 22.

The youngster was shouting to her mother, Sarah Barnes, who was jogging nearby after being taken to the park by her father Mark Jones.

Nigerian man convicted of stabbing 24-year-old man to death in London over second-hand Gucci bag

London was convicted on Tuesday, December 1, 2020.  

Odupitan, of Longheath Gardens, Croydon, killed 24-year-old Tyler Roye on February 26 in Bywood Avenue, Croydon.

He appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday December 1, where he was found guilty of murder following the vicious attack, which took place just minutes away from the victim’s home.

Four prisoners who escaped from Oko Prison during the #EndSARS crisis have been re-arrested by the police.

The suspects were paraded at the Nigeria Police Force tactical unit in Abuja, alongside others who were arrested for various offences bordering on armed robbery, car theft, unlawful possession of weapons, illegal dealing and selling of weapons.

The prisoners who escaped from the facility have been identified as Adebayo Opeyemi, Oloride Benjamin, Peter Osas, Hudu Musa and Frank Odion.
