I love this. Anjelina Jolie produced a movie based on this story titled UNBROKEN. The movie was based on the 2010 non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption.
The movie had its world premiere in Sydney in November 17, 2014 with Jack O' Connell portrayed as Zamperini. The movie grossed over $163 million worldwide.
The story was so touching.

Louis Zamperini died for the second time on July 2, 2014.

He had been announced 'Killed in Action' by the US Govt. when his B-24 aircraft crashed into the sea and no survivors were found.

Life as an Olympian


Zamperini was born to Italian immigrants. While growing up, he set up a record for the school track team and eventually booked a place for himself in the United States Team that went to the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Zamperini finished eighth in his race, but his last sprint got attention of one guy. His name was Adolf Hitler.

He went on to have a personal moment with Hitler and even shook hands with him.

The War Begins

Zamperini gets himself enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and is stationed in the Pacific as a bombardier (responsible for targeting aerial bombs) on a B 24 Liberator Aircraft.




Their crew flew well over 20 successful missions. They were targeted by enemy fire on multiple times but managed to survive. Ironically, their B24 was nicknamed 'Super Man'.

After one such mission, their plane was badly damaged and the crew was asked to conduct a search and rescue mission for another of their aircraft which went missing.

This is how they got into - "The Green Hornet". While looking for the missing aircraft, far into the sea, mechanical failures hit 'The Green Hornet' and they crash into the sea.

The Ordeal Begins

Of the eleven crew members on board the aircraft, only three of them survive the crash.

Zamperini, along with his two crew mates, start drifting along in the life raft.

Little did they know, how long would their journey at sea would last.

As days passed by, drifting along with no signs of human life, the trio started facing several problems.

The Fight for Survival

- They start getting delusional : In simple words, they become crazy. They start seeing things on water. They imagine about their favorite dishes and seeing them in water and try to reach out to them.

- Lack of Water : The irony of the sea is that, there is water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The more sea water you drink, the salt in it makes you dehydrated.

- Lack of Food : The emergency rations get over in a few days. One of the crewmen, out of jealousy eats up an entire bar of chocolate on his own. Ironically, this crewman dies, after 33 days in sea.

- Shark Attack : The ordeal was not getting easier any day. They were beginning to get attacked by sharks. Imagine being in a life raft, with almost no equipment, no other human beings in sight, sea on all sides and blood thirsty sharks underneath.

- Japanese Bombers - A few times, Japanese Zero aircraft spotted them and they were strafed and sprayed with bullets.

This goes on for 46 long days. At sea, alone, for this long, Zamperini and his surviving crew member lost track of time.

They survive for these many days on rain water, raw fish and albatross bird. They got used to eating raw meat.

On their 47th day, after drifting thousand of miles from their initial crash location, they reach Marshall Island, only to get captured by the Japanese forces.

Louis Zamperini was no ordinary prisoner of war. He was an Olympian. He was a celebrity. He had shaken hands with Hitler. Little did he know that, his achievements would encourage his captors to taunt him and torture him.

One of the ordeals that Zamperini went through, was when his hands were tied behind his back. Then he was suspended from a high pole with his tied hands supporting the weight of his entire body. The entire weight is on your shoulders for hours and the pain is incredulous. This was a practice at Auschwitz too.

He was tortured the most by Mutshuhiro Watanabe. Once he made Zamperini hold a heavy wooden log over his head for over 37 minutes, at the end of which Watanabe punched him in the stomach.

Back home, there was no news about Zamperini and he was declared 'Killed in Action', and there was a funeral held for him.

Eventually, after the war ended and the Japanese surrender, Zamperini came back home to a hero's welcome.

The Life Thereafter

Zamperini, with the kind of ordeal went through, spent most of his life as a motivational speaker. In 1998, he visited Japan to carry the Winter Olympics torch. His torturer, Matshuhiro Watanabe, survived the war and went into hiding. He came back to normal life only when the prosecution of war time criminals had stopped. While in Japan, Zamperini forgave Matshuhiro and tried to meet him but was declined this request by Matshuhiro himself.


May his soul rest in peace and may his legacy live forever.

I'm from a Christian home but since my childhood I find it hard to be in any religion..i was always forced to go to church.sometimes my mum will invite the pastor and prayer warriors to conduct a deliverance section on me but still I'm always skeptical about religion..now I'm old enough to decide what I need and the kind of spiritual or non spiritual life I want to live but my parents always treat me like an outcast whenever I'm around . They even threatened to disown me if I don't get baptized...
