The son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Lt. Col Adeboye Obasanjo, who was shot in the ferocious Michika battle between the Nigerian military and Boko Haram has expressed eagerness to return to the battle front. The revelation was made on Tuesday when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited the wounded soldier who is recuperating at a government medical facility in Yola, Adamawa State on Tuesday. Atiku, who was in Yola over the weekend to vote in the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial primaries and to collect his permanent voter card on learning that Lt. Colonel Obasanjo was being treated at a government medical facility in Yola, went to visit him Tuesday afternoon. A Source at the hospital told our Correspondent that Atiku was glad to find the soldier son of former President Obasanjo in high spirit. According to the source, the former Vice President, who recently mended fences with his former boss was impressed to learn from the injured officer his readiness to return to the front to deal with the insurgents. The source quoted Atiku to have told Lt. Col Obasanjo that he was impressed to see him display the type of courage associated with his former boss, President Obasanjo. “He was even marching before me even as he was recovering from gunshots,” the source recounted Atiku as saying. The Turaki Adamawa was said to have wished Lt. Col Adeboye Obasanjo speedy recovery from the injuries he sustained from gunshot in an operation to push back Boko Haram insurgents from Michika in Adamawa state. http://www.punchng.com/news/im-eager-to-return-to-battle-injured-obasanjo/ |

Nigeria the major cause of our problem remain BAD LEADERSHIP |
Outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus puts pressure on the relationship between members of the Obafemi Awolowo University community and a large colony of bats on campus, SODIQ OYELEKE reports Before a Liberian diplomat, Patrick Sawyer, practically imported the Ebola Virus Disease into Nigeria, not many Nigerians really liked bats. Many associated the winged nocturnal mouse-like animals with bad omens and so they rarely attracted positive commentaries. But that was not the perception at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Hitherto at the university, bats were creatures that many students and members of staff found very fascinating. No wonder, they classified them as one of the prides and wonders of the 52-year- old university. Almost every big tree on campus is a home to these mammals. But with the EVD scare that hit the country last July, that perception has changed. Nowadays, only a few members of the varsity community are comfortable with the bats. Many people now see the creatures as enemies. They see the rich bat protectorate as a leprous colony with only a few people summoning courage to pass under the big trees that host them. Of course, their fears are justifiable. Many believe bats, monkeys and some other undomesticated animals have links with the spread of the dreaded EVD. The disease, with no known cure so far, has killed no fewer than 1,500 of the 2,500 infected persons in Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Congo. In Nigeria particularly, Ebola has consumed the lives of no fewer than six persons in less than two months. Thus, seeing bats fly in their thousands has now become a source of concern in OAU. But some people insist there is no cause for alarm. Some of such people who spoke to our correspondent said the bats were harmless. According to them, there is no reason to fear them because they have been around for many years. In fact, they say the animals still deserve respect, love and good neighbourliness. For a student, Sola Mosobalaje, the presence of the animals is no longer strange to him, especially as they are almost in every nook and cranny of the university. He said, “Initially, as a fresh student in the university, I was scared of them because of their huge population. Today, however, that is no longer the situation. I am no longer scared. I have been here for long and nothing has happened to anyone. “We know when they fly and when they do not. That we now no longer pass under the trees that quarter them is merely because we want to be careful. It is not because of the fears many other Nigerians associate with animals due to the Ebola outbreak. So what we do now is to take alternative routes.” Another student, Sanmi Aina, who resides off campus, said the bats were a common sight in the city. Aina noted that if they were as dangerous as now feard,, no individual would be alive in the ancient Yoruba city. He said, “If anything will happen, it will likely start from town and not on campus. They will have to send all the residents of Ile-Ife away and everyone would have been dead by now if bats automatically transmitted Ebola virus. But I can assure you, there is no tension here. We are taking our time as literate people.” The Head of Zoology Department in the university, Prof. Sylvester Ogbogu, also assuaged the fear of many, saying the school was safe, in spite of the huge bat population. Ogbogu, a professor of Aquatic Entomology, also dismissed the call for the cutting down of the trees over what he described as “unconfirmed information” that bats spread EVD. He said, “One thing with the transmission of diseases between animal and man is that it only occurs when the disease is endemic. Such is the case with river blindness. River blindness is associated with certain insects. Those insects that transfer the river blindness pathogens are dominant in the middle belt area of the country. It is because the pathogens and the insects are there that we have high incidence of river blindness in that region. “If Ebola virus goes endemic in Nigeria, it is possible for the fruit bats we have on campus to have it. But we have been staying with these bats and people have been hunting them to feed animals and we have not recorded any case of Ebola.” The don, who said the bat settlement on campus predated the establishment of the university, warned against ‘hasty generalisation’. He added, “The few bats that may be present in some of these West African countries, such as Sierra Leone or Liberia, may have Ebola virus, which needs to be investigated. But the ones we have here are relatively safe. When students are around, they move to the fringes of the university campus because of human movement and disturbance. “The cutting down of trees is the most terrible thing to do. Why should we kill the animals or cut down trees? The community has been with these bats for ages. They migrate and come back occasionally. Their number has been increasing over the years. So far, there is no fear, there is no apprehension about their presence.” A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Eyo Okon, said there was the need for a research to conclude that bats were major carriers of EVD. Okon, a specialist in bats biology, while urging Nigerians not to panic, said, “It is important to remember how Ebola came into the country. If it had come through forest animals, such as monkeys, and bats, then that kind of link with bats can be rational. People are just mentioning bats. I have done studies on bats and nobody talked of bats spreading disease. “In fact, people even worship bats in a part of Warri. There is a tree there where people congregate and worship because they believe good things come from bats. Most talks about bats are myths. Bats are very useful animals and are one of the biggest pollinators among mammals. “It is possible that bats are carriers of the virus but that has to be proved. Science and knowledge always begin with speculation and guess work, but we need to go into research for proof. “A report by experts coordinated by World Health Orgainsation says fruit bats are considered (not a certainty) natural hosts for Ebola virus; meaning that it is a speculation with little evidence and not yet conclusively proved. We must begin to prove things conclusively in this country and I think OAU is a very good place to do that because it has a large constituent of bats.” The former VC also frowned on the idea of exterminating the bats, saying it would have both biological and environmental implications. According to him, killing bats will not end Ebola. He said, “The research aspect is very important because that is what will pinpoint the source and how it spreads. Universities and other research institutions can combine and go into this research. Stopping Ebola does not end with killing of bats and cutting down of trees. Government must step up research.” Nonetheless, the authorities of the university are not taking anything to chance. The university Public Relations Officer, Biodun Olarewaju, who said the campus was safe, however, stated that there was ongoing sensitisation campaign on EVD. Olarewaju added, “Members of the community are safe. There is no cause for alarm over Ebola here.” Copyright PUNCH. |

Stephen Davis, an Australian hostage negotiator who spent some time in Nigeria trying to secure the release of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants in Chibok, Borno State, told SaharaReporters that he stands by his widely reported allegations that former Governor Modu Sherriff of Borno State and a former Chief of Army staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika (ret.), were among the top sponsors of the Islamist insurgents who have massacred thousands of Nigerians and foreigners and made the northeast part of Nigeria a highly militarized zone. In an extensive telephone interview with SaharaReporters yesterday, Dr. Davis also accused an unnamed senior official of the Central Bank of Nigeria as well as a man based in Cairo, Egypt whom he claimed operates as Boko Haram’s bagman. He said both men, in addition to Mr. Sheriff and former General Ihejirika, were major players in the funding and continued existence of the deadly Islamist sect. Dr. Davis told SaharaReporters that he did not want to name the CBN official as this may prejudice investigation by Nigeria’s security services. Both accused men have reacted furiously to Mr. Davis’ allegation, with the former Borno governor threatening to travel to Australia to sue his accuser while Mr. Ihejirika accused former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir El Rufai, of being a “commander” of Boko Haram. Three days ago, Mr. El Rufai had posted transcripts and video of Mr. Davis’ accusations of the former governor and ex-Army chief on social media. Asked whether Mr. El Rufai and former military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari, had a hand in funding or sponsoring Boko Haram, Dr. Davis said their names have not been mentioned to him by any Boko Haram connections. Also, asked to explain why Mr. Ihejirika, a non-Muslim who hails from the predominantly Christian southeastern part of Nigeria, became a Boko Haram “sponsor,” Mr. Davis said, “Boko Haram commanders and some connected with them told me on several occasions Ihejirika was one of their sponsors.” He also disclosed that Mr. Sheriff always had the best military protection in Nigeria’s violence-plagued northeast, a protection he claimed the ex-governor enjoyed after he left office. Dr. Davis reiterated that his allegations were informed by discussions he had with several Boko Haram field commanders over a long period of time. Asked if President Goodluck Jonathan was aware of the insurgents’ sponsors and their specific roles, Dr. Davis said he was unsure of the extent of information currently before President Jonathan. He added that Mr. Jonathan had been weakened by lack of military loyalty and a history of security negligence. He gave the example of repeated attempts to bring the growth of Al Qa’eda associated cells to the attention of NSA’s since 2006 only to have them dismiss such reports as baseless. “By the time Goodluck Jonathan became president Boko Haram had become a potent weapon with a command structure embedded in 16 northern states fanned by support from corrupt politicians.” He further gave the example of Nigeria’s Minister of Defense, Aliyu Gusau, whom he accused of basically leaving Mr. Jonathan to carry his can without taking any responsibility for his work. The Australian negotiator also revealed that his years working with Nigerian presidents on matters of terrorism had shown that, even when some prominent individuals are known to be involved in criminality, the presidents are simply too afraid to take them on. He cited the example of the Niger Delta region. He told SaharaReporters that he and former President Olusegun Obasanjo found out that Abiye Sekibo, who was then Mr. Obasanjo’s Transport Minister, had contracted the assassins who killed a prominent politician, Harry Marshall. He said he tried to persuade Mr. Obasanjo to prosecute Mr. Sekibo, but the then president declined, stating that such a trial could bring down his government. Dr. Davis touched on several aspects of Boko Haram activities, showing that he was quite knowledgeable about the sect’s actions. He told SaharaReporters that Boko Haram runs about six major camps in the northeast and neighboring countries, adding that 700 fighters inhabited each camp. In addition there are a range of smaller camps within Borno State, which are often temporary and to which kidnapped girls are taken to be used by the insurgents. The Australian revealed that earlier this year Boko Haram was a loose coalition of three Islamist militant groups that worked with one another, claiming that, since four months ago, the sects had merged into one single entity, become more cohesive, strategically effective and powerful. “They are now linking with other terrorist group in the region and will soon be very difficult to dismantle. If these political sponsors think they can turn these groups off after the 2015 elections they are going to be surprised to find it is out of their control.” On why he had chosen to speak out publicly at this time, Dr. Davis stated that, from experience, any terrorist group that has lasted more than eight years after its formation would likely exist for another 20 or more years before it can be dismantled. It thus becomes embedded for a generation and the likelihood of dismantling it was very low. “If we don’t do our utmost now to dismantle Boko Haram then we may not be able to do so for another generation. That is a very gloomy scenario for Nigeria.” He touched on former National Security Adviser, Owoye Andrew Azazi, whom he described as utterly corrupt. He said Mr. Azazi, who was a retired Army general, was planning to buy into the Hilton hotel chain in London to the tune of $100 million before he died in a helicopter crash on December 15, 2012. Dr. Davis painted a portrait of Nigeria’s various intelligence units as operating in silos that refuse to share information that could tame terrorist groups. To illustrate his point, the Australian cited the example of the State Security Services. According to him, months after the SSS won the extradition from the Sudan of Aminu Ogwuche, a suspected terror mastermind who reportedly planned the deadly bombing of an Abuja bus station, the intelligence agency had yet to interrogate Mr. Ogwuche about his links with the three young men he reportedly contracted to carry out the bombing. Dr. Davis said the young men were three in number and that they lived in the home of a CBN official who also carried out banking transactions for Boko Haram through the CBN. He said two other young collaborators in the Nyanya Motor Park bombing remain on the run. The Australian hostage negotiator vowed to make more revelations about Boko Haram’s sponsors, adding that he believed the sect could only be dismantled if their sponsors were exposed and prosecuted. In particular, he said he could not see why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had not already moved on Sheriff for his extensive looting of public funds when he was the Borno State governor, and for leaving the roads in Borno State in a terrible shape that has enabled Boko Haram to ambush Nigeria troops and massacre them mercilessly. He also added that the former governor should face the ultimate trial for financing the recruitment of young men to the Islamist sect. Dr. Davis dismissed Mr. Sheriff’s threat to travel to Australia to sue him for his statements as grandstanding and seeking to divert attention from the real issue of Mr. Sheriff’s involvement with Boko Haram. He added that he would be pleased to meet the former governor at the airport whenever he developed the courage to come to Australia.
