Webmasters / The Mentally Strong People: 13 Things They Avoid by godman01(m): 12:52pm On Nov 14, 2017
We can define mental strength by identifying the things mentally strong individuals don’t do. This list was compiled by Amy Morin, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker, which she shared in LifeHack. It impressed me enough I’d also like to share her list here along with my thoughts on how each of these items is particularly applicable to entrepreneurs.

1. Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves.
You don’t see mentally strong people feeling sorry for their circumstances or dwelling on the way they’ve been mistreated. They have learned to take responsibility for their actions and outcomes, and they have an inherent understanding of the fact that frequently life is not fair. They are able to emerge from trying circumstances with self-awareness and gratitude for the lessons learned. When a situation turns out badly, they respond with phrases such as “Oh, well.” Or perhaps simply, “Next!”

2. Give Away Their Power.
Mentally strong people avoid giving others the power to make them feel inferior or bad. They understand they are in control of their actions and emotions. They know their strength is in their ability to manage the way they respond.

3. Shy Away from Change.
Mentally strong people embrace change and they welcome challenge. Their biggest “fear," if they have one, is not of the unknown, but of becoming complacent and stagnant. An environment of change and even uncertainty can energize a mentally strong person and bring out their best.

4. Waste Energy on Things They Can’t Control.
Mentally strong people don’t complain (much) about bad traffic, lost luggage, or especially about other people, as they recognize that all of these factors are generally beyond their control. In a bad situation, they recognize that the one thing they can always control is their own response and attitude, and they use these attributes well.

5. Worry About Pleasing Others.
Know any people pleasers? Or, conversely, people who go out of their way to dis-please others as a way of reinforcing an image of strength? Neither position is a good one. A mentally strong person strives to be kind and fair and to please others where appropriate, but is unafraid to speak up. They are able to withstand the possibility that someone will get upset and will navigate the situation, wherever possible, with grace.

6. Fear Taking Calculated Risks.
A mentally strong person is willing to take calculated risks. This is a different thing entirely than jumping headlong into foolish risks. But with mental strength, an individual can weigh the risks and benefits thoroughly, and will fully assess the potential downsides and even the worst-case scenarios before they take action.

7. Dwell on the Past.
There is strength in acknowledging the past and especially in acknowledging the things learned from past experiences—but a mentally strong person is able to avoid miring their mental energy in past disappointments or in fantasies of the “glory days” gone by. They invest the majority of their energy in creating an optimal present and future.

8. Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over.
We all know the definition of insanity, right? It’s when we take the same actions again and again while hoping for a different and better outcome than we’ve gotten before. A mentally strong person accepts full responsibility for past behavior and is willing to learn from mistakes. Research shows that the ability to be self-reflective in an accurate and productive way is one of the greatest strengths of spectacularly successful executives and entrepreneurs.

9. Resent Other People’s Success.
It takes strength of character to feel genuine joy and excitement for other people’s success. Mentally strong people have this ability. They don’t become jealous or resentful when others succeed (although they may take close notes on what the individual did well). They are willing to work hard for their own chances at success, without relying on shortcuts.

10. Give Up After Failure.
Every failure is a chance to improve. Even the greatest entrepreneurs are willing to admit that their early efforts invariably brought many failures. Mentally strong people are willing to fail again and again, if necessary, as long as the learning experience from every “failure” can bring them closer to their ultimate goals.

11. Fear Alone Time.
Mentally strong people enjoy and even treasure the time they spend alone. They use their downtime to reflect, to plan, and to be productive. Most importantly, they don’t depend on others to shore up their happiness and moods. They can be happy with others, and they can also be happy alone.

12. Feel the World Owes Them Anything.
Particularly in the current economy, executives and employees at every level are gaining the realization that the world does not owe them a salary, a benefits package and a comfortable life, regardless of their preparation and schooling. Mentally strong people enter the world prepared to work and succeed on their merits, at every stage of the game.

13. Expect Immediate Results.
Whether it’s a workout plan, a nutritional regimen, or starting a business, mentally strong people are “in it for the long haul”. They know better than to expect immediate results. They apply their energy and time in measured doses and they celebrate each milestone and increment of success on the way. They have “staying power.” And they understand that genuine changes take time. Do you have mental strength? Are there elements on this list you need more of? With thanks to Amy Morin, I would like to reinforce my own abilities further in each of these areas today. How about you?

Webmasters / 7 Ways Business Owners Can Save 40+ Hours Every Month by godman01(m): 4:12pm On Oct 25, 2017
Entrepreneurs wear many hats and are constantly pulled in different directions — often simultaneously. From leading your team and managing the budget, to coming up with creative ideas, there’s a lot on your plate. And getting it all done requires more than just a strategic balancing act.

Time is money, after all, when you’re running a business, and you can’t afford to waste it. In his book First Things First, Stephen Covey, (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), wrote, “The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.”
According to GetVoip, one in five people waste a third of their workday. If you’re one of them, that’s a lot of time that could be spent running your business. To be successful and ensure your business runs smoothly, you need to be as productive as possible.
But, if you’re like most business owners, you’re probably spending more time than you need to on some things and not enough on others. To help you get your priorities in order, here is a list of the seven things you need to stop doing to get back the time you need in your day.

1. Stop saying yes to everything.
According to successful investor Warren Buffet, “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ‘no’ to almost everything.” When running a business or leading a team, you’ll find it easy to take on more than you can handle. But it’s important to recognize when you’re in over your head and call for reinforcements.
Instead of saying “yes” to doing something, delegate tasks to your team members or an assistant to free up your schedule. Letting other people tackle these tasks will allow you to focus on bigger issues.

2. Stop multitasking.
According to Wrike, experts estimate that only 2 percent of the population is actually proficient at multitasking, so chances are, you’re not one of them. Multitasking can make you feel that you’re getting a lot done, but it actually has the opposite effect.
Entrepreneur Jim Rohn famously said, “Don’t mistake movement for achievement. It’s easy to get faked out by being busy. The question is: Busy doing what?”
Switching between tasks can cost as much as 40 percent of your time, according to Wrike. Instead, focus on doing one task at a time and shut out all distractions while you do it.

3. Stop sitting in endless meetings.
When you’re a business leader, your schedule is typically full of meetings. But, with so much time dedicated to meetings, are you actually getting anything done? On average, employees spend 31 hours a month in meetings, and 40 percent feel overwhelmed by that number, according to Atlassian.
Consider limiting the time you spend in meetings each week. Set up meetings for projects that need face-to-face discussion, but for all others, stick to email.

4. Stop fueling your social media addiction.
Hubspot reports that one-third of the world’s population now uses social media regularly, so it’s no wonder that it’s found its way into the workplace. But social media can be a black hole of distraction.
Employees spend up to two hours per day recovering from distractions like social media, according to Atlassian. During work hours, avoid getting distracted: Turn off all notifications or put your phone away completely.
If you need to use social media for work, consider automating your posts, with programs like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck.

5. Stop paying bills with checks.
Writing out check after check can be exhausting. And when you have bills to pay, there are a lot that need to be written. Instead of manually paying your bills with checks, consider setting up auto-payments. Your bills will be automatically paid on time every month, and you won’t have to do a thing.

6. Stop sending pricing quotes as Google Docs.
Price quotes often involve collaborations among legal, leadership, marketing and sales. With so many hands in the pot, it’s easy for things to get messy. If you’re getting hung up on edits and approvals, it may be time to streamline your process.
Consider investing in quote software, such as PandaDoc. With this kind of system, you’ll be able to create, edit and send quotes seamlessly and all within one system. No need for clunky PDF files or Google Docs.

7. Stop manually tracking hours and expenses.
Are you still doing your payroll, timekeeping, accounting and other processes by hand? It’s time to move into the future. Invest in an online payroll service such as Wagepoint or Gusto to create reports or make payments with just the click of a button. Plus, cloud-based software will ensure that all information is saved in one place and easily accessible.

Business / Richard Branson To Young Entreprenuers - Just Do It! by godman01(m): 11:00am On Oct 04, 2017
Through the decades, entrepreneur Richard Branson has not lost that certain wunderkind vibe about him and the way he runs his brand. This aura makes him especially inspiring to entrepreneurs who are looking to start young.

“Most young people with good ideas … will find that 99 percent of people will give them every reason why their idea’s been done before or why it’s not a good idea or why they’re going to fall flat on their face,” Branson recently told Inc.’s president and editor in chief Eric Schurenberg during an exclusive sit-down interview. “In the end, you have to say, ‘Screw it. Just do it.’”

At the age of 15, Branson dropped out of high school to start his first business, a magazine for young activists titled Student.

Four years later, in 1970, Branson began selling records by mail. In 1971, he opened his first record store. In 1972, he opened a recording studio. In 1973, he started his own record label. The Virgin business empire had begun, and Branson had not yet turned 24.

Today, the Virgin Group is a well-regarded global conglomerate of about 350 companies, branching into the entertainment, travel, and mobile industries.

Not all of Branson’s big ideas have been successful. Virgin Airlines and Virgin Mobile are now flagship brands for Branson, but remember Virgin Cola? With big risks come big, public failures. Branson has a follow-up secret to success: determination even when failure seems inevitable.

“If you have enough determination.... It’s more likely that you will succeed because of what you learned from the occasions when you didn’t succeed," Branson said. “The most important thing is to not be put off by failure.”

Art, Graphics & Video / How To Say ‘no’ When Freelancing by godman01(m): 10:59am On Sep 26, 2017
When you begin freelancing, your first job is cause for celebration. That feeling of honor that someone has chosen you from among all of the competition is priceless, and it’s a feeling that might last into your second, third, and fourth job.
But there comes a time for every freelancer when accepting a new job is perhaps not in their best interest. While it might feel counterintuitive to turn down a job, accepting a job when you can’t do your best work for any reason is not only okay, it’s necessary. So necessary, in fact, that we even made a podcast about it.

Whether it’s to protect your reputation, your sanity, or your business, learning how to say no is a crucial skill for any freelancer. Let’s explore some of the most common scenarios in which you might need to turn down a job and how you can do so with respect so that things end on a good note.

When you’re already swamped
When you’re already overwhelmed with work and you get a message from somebody who is interested in hiring you, it can be difficult to walk away. After all, being a freelancer often means that there are ups and downs throughout the year in how much work you get, and it can be tempting to try and insulate yourself from the possible lean times by taking on as much as you can when offered. However, it’s important to take the long view in a situation like this.

As a freelancer, your reputation is your most valuable asset. It’s your reputation that gets you good reviews, referrals, and references. This reputation is hinged on producing high quality work for every single job you get – after all, you never know which client might have friends and colleagues that they would be happy to direct your way. If you take on another project when you have too much on your plate already, your work quality will suffer and this will damage your business in the long run, even if in the short term it gives you a little cash boost.

In this scenario, honesty is really the best policy because it actually paints you in a more positive light. Just tell the potential client that you really would love to work with them, but unfortunately at this time you have too many projects on your plate and cannot take on another. Add that you would be happy to work with them in the future if they have any projects at another time and say that you hope they will be in touch. Being busy and in-demand shows that you are successful at what you do, and people like working with successful people, so they very well may be in touch the next time they need someone. When you have more time later, you can also reach out to them and tell them that you are available for more projects and see if they are still interested in working together.

When your customer isn’t always right
When someone is simply unpleasant to work with, it’s a more delicate situation and saying no to a project with that person or company might just be something you need to do to keep your mental health intact. It’s ok to say no to clients who are rude, don’t pay on time, or cause you other problems. While it might feel strange to turn down perfectly good work, you also need to look after yourself – and being able to do that is one of the biggest benefits of being your own boss. Remember that there are plenty of fish in the sea, and there’s no reason to spend your precious time working with a client who can’t treat you decently.

This is a scenario that calls for vagueness though, since you want to be polite to preserve your professional reputation. The other element that’s essential here is firmness, since clients who are bullies are more likely to try and push you into doing work that you don’t want to. A good way to respond to such a client is simply to say, “thank you for the offer, unfortunately I cannot accept it.” This is clear, direct, polite and gives the person nothing to criticize or to argue with. Don’t get into details, don’t make excuses that might be exposed later, and whatever you do don’t lose your cool.

When the job goes against your morals
A job offer that goes against your ethics or morals is one of the trickiest scenarios that you might encounter as a freelancer. During your career you might receive an offer to work for an industry that you don’t feel is aligned with your values or you might be asked to produce something that would cheat or harm others.

Whatever the specific situation might be, being able to be at peace with yourself is a perfectly valid reason to turn down work, no matter what. When your name is attached to your work, you should be able to stand by it with pride, not feel that you compromised yourself for a client.
Once you’ve decided to turn down work for this reason, it’s important to remember that your responsibility is to yourself and your business, not to lecture or moralize to the person who has contacted you. Keeping a good professional reputation means keeping all interactions with all people courteous and respectful, even if you disagree with that person. Keep your response short and to-the-point by saying something like “Thank you for the offer but I must respectfully decline”. This lets the person know that you’re not interested in working with them in the future either, but is vague enough as to be polite and nothing that they could complain about or use to smear you.

Remember you are in control
Over the course of a freelancing career, you might be able to handle different volumes of work, be more interested in different types of projects, or have any other number of considerations that would cause you to accept or decline a project. What’s important is just remembering that you are in control and that you have the final say. Saying no is an important part of being a business owner and a freelancer, and the more you practice it (when appropriate!) the more comfortable it will feel.

Romance / Re: I Am 30yrs, Earn 35k A Month And Will Marry A Student In A Months Time. by godman01(m): 1:58pm On Sep 07, 2017
donpata:
I was moved to write this epistle cos of the fp topic of marrying someone who earns 35k yesterday. I have seen such questions on NL but I normally ignore them. Someone even asked if a lady can marry someone who earns 100k embarassed. I normally laugh at the comments and move on. I laughed at the sheer ignorance of many commenters, and the foolish statements many made. I decided to assume that 70% of the people who commented are either undergraduates still studying who have a big Disney picture of the sweet employment awaiting them or some who have not really known what is out there in the world. The remaining 20% earn well probably and so feel life should be like that for everyone. The remaining 10% commenters are those who really see life as it is in reality – DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS. Now am gonna be objective and subjective at the same time. And let me warn you – IT’S LONG tongue

Me? 30yrs, had my BSc in the north but did my MSc at UI. Hoping to register for Phd by next year.
My fiancée? 24ys old and currently awaiting 300 lv registration. Will be done by 2019.

Fact: without any serious research, I think I am save to say that at least 50% of families (basically father and mother) in Nigeria earn a combined income of less than 40k in a month.
Fact: The federal govt claims it has about 100k civil servants. Add paramilitary and military with about 500k personnel and public office holders, I think 800k people in active service on FG’s payroll is a fair judgment. For the sake of argument, let’s assume fg has another 800k retired personnel on pension. That’s like 1.6 million people. Nigeria has a population of 180million people. The WB estimate Nigeria has a workforce of about 60 million in 2016. If we delete the 1.6million on FGs payroll, we still have about 58.4million people left. Obviously, the remaining are left for the State and Local govt as well as private sector to employ. How many are employed?
Lagos state claims it has about 100,000 workers in its payroll. Let me be liberal enough to use it as a benchmark for all Nigerian states and fct. 100k by 37 = 3.7million employees.
Obviously, we still have over 50million people to employ. How many will the Real private sector pick? Yeah those that will pay a graduate from 60k above – how many can they pick? Now many will have to be entrepreneurs, “self-employed” people, petty traders, artisans etc. How much can they really earn monthly?

Fact: 80% of state and LGA workers between level 1 and 10 earn less than 50k in a month. Apart from states like Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and a few others, most states, especially in the North, pay quite low. On level 8, with Kad Govt, I earn 35-37k. It fluctuates monthly. Note that there are married people with at least 3 children that are on lev 1 - 6. Do the maths.

Wedding:
Many asked how one will pay bride price. Well, I have crossed that bridge. I know my status so before I even got a lady, I started buying some stuff like wrappers to keep. More so, my savings, family and friends rally round me and that was solved. Only a foolish lady will think of bride price as an issue here. Except if her family is poor, why should they demand too much?. 2 of my sisters that married had their bride price pegged at 5k each. The total money paid on the first was 25k and 50k for the 2nd. Mind you, they are currently running their masters programme so they ain’t illiterates. Let me stop here.

So the Wedding? How will I handle it? SIMPLE: I AM CUTTING MY COAT ACCORDING TO MY POCKET

Box: I went to the market and saw boxes of 100-200k. I was showed a set of 5 for 30k as well. I opted for a set of 5 at 60k. That’s my own level too. Mind you there were people picking that of 30k too. Different strokes for Different folks.

RECEPTION VENUE: Church Premises. My church got a lot of space so why should I spend 200-500k (that I don’t even have) renting a hall for a 2hr event? A guy who got married last month in my Church did not do reception at all. Again, Different strokes for Different folks.

Wedding Cards: Saw a nice foreign one. They said it will cost me 30k per 100. I needed 500. I was showed another that will cost 5k per 100. I Finally opted for the one of 10k per 100. Even got a 5k discount.

My suit? I opted for a 16k suit and my best man decided to pay for it.

My shoes? I got really nice shoes but coz it’s my day, I opted for new ones. I picked up a very nice one for 2k. It aint top notch quality but it should take me through the day. It can actually pass for a ck or d&g when viewed from a distance.

My Chairs and Canopies? My organizers are 20. Lol grin. They have paid 80% of the money.

Cake? My aunt who has a HND in catering bla bla and has been in it for almost 15yrs running has taken that as her contribution.

DJ and Camera man? My men in suit, (5 in number) have paid for that service. tongue

MC? A friend is good at it. That is his contribution.

Wedding Gown: My cake designer linked me to a lady who rents out. She thus charged us 10k for a nice wedding gown. I deposited 5k. Will pay 5k after the event.
Need I continue? I don’t think so.

The main thing – The marriage life
Yeah I know you are saying all I have said na wash. You are waiting for how reality will hit me after the marriage cos that’s the main deal. You gonna say you await my regret thread after some few months. Sorry, your expectation will be cut short.

Fees:
Now, my to-be wife will be registering for a new session by December. Her fees is just arnd 30k so I kept that amount and I have promised myself not to touch it until its time. I don’t even need to touch it. Everything appears almost set and done.

Clothing: I filled my wife’s box to the “brim” with both native and English wears. coolSo for now, cloths aint really an issue.

Accommodation: Here in KD, a 1 bedroom mini flat cost between 80-150k depending on the location. Am not talking of a 2 room flat cos, truly, I don’t need it now. But I am not even thinking of taking the mini flat either. A room and parlor (real face me I face u) cost between 18k-45k depending on the location. There are better ones; mostly new houses that cost 40-60k. I’ve gotten a very nice one for 55k. Just 2 tenants in the house and the other guy is single so we just gonna be sharing the toilet with him. It’s not that I can’t afford it but wisdom must direct me. I got 2plots of land already so I don’t even intend staying in that house beyond a year or 2.

My building: I already have 2 plots of land. I’ve struck an agreement with some guys who will supply me mud blocks at N20 each. At my estimate of 3000 blocks, that’s 60k grin. Havent paid but after my wedding, I will do it jejely. My plan is to rush the building and roof it b4 the rains come next year. I paid some guys in my area 7k so by next week, they are gonna go there and dig the foundation of a 2bedroom flat for me. Not that I am building now but I have to dig during the rainy season cos the land gets hard during the dry season. My intention is to use just ¼ of the land for that so that when I am blessed wella, I will use the remaining ¾ of the land to build my pent house. Need I tell you that by estimates, I need 6 bundles of those “aluminum” sheets to roof it? I bought 3 last year when it was 16k. I could not add cos it went up to 30k. I heard it’s 20k now but I can’t buy the remaining 3 now cos of my wedding preps. Will do that after my wedding when I have relaxed a bit.

Feeding?
A 50kg bag of rice takes me over 5 months now that I am alone. I believe in varieties so I got different things stocked in my room. Adding one or two extra plate should not make life difficult. I planted maize on my 2 plots. Once harvested, I won’t need to buy semovita all the time. If you have been to the north, you will know that with my harvest, Tuwo is served. Need I continue? I don’t think so. Let me not bore you further.

My support to extended Families
Someone asked in that thread that how do one take care of his families and inlaws. Well, my family aint rich but they can cater for themselves. My dad and mum earn and have only one child left in the university. Moreover, they are sensible enough to know that they should not expect from me. Rather, what is sensible is for them to support me if need be tongue. My fiancées’ parents aint rich either. But I know they aint so poor to demand me to take care of their own responsibility when they know I have their daughter to cater for. Of coz, once in a while, I will do what I can for our families.

Children
Just a child and I will pause until she is done with school. I know it’s gonna come with challenges but I don’t think you expect me to plan out every day of my life and budget for same here. I know that I will cross the bridge when I get there.

Other wants
I am a gadget freak. Before my wedding preps, I buy things impulsively. Now I know I have to control that. I know what lies ahead of me. That’s why I didn’t go for an iphone but went for a hot note. When the hot note packed up, I didn’t kill myself for a Samsung s7 even though I love it. I went for my sweet Ulefone Tiger @ 31k. When I went for a tab, I didn’t go for an ipad; not even a tecno pad. I went for imose xii tongue. Instead of ps3 console, I download games to my laptop and play them. That serves me.

I CAN TRULY GO ON AND ON BUT CALLING SOMEONE A FOOL AS MANY DID ON THAT THREAD YESTERDAY IS QUITE ILLOGICAL. My dad married at 24. My mum was 19 then. Both are now degree holders. Things have changed and that’s why I am marrying at 30. I don’t want to clock 50 and yet taking my first child to write Common Entrance. If you like say I am rushing.
Firstly, I love my fiancée die. 2ndly, I am a Christian and my bodily desires are building up strongly. Marriage is the way out. 3rdly, I love kids. Since they are an inheritance, I can’t wait to have one as God wills. Lastly, I wanna retire in peace. Not old man using my pension to train undergraduates and Jambites.
Finally, I am not complacent with where I am. I have handled a few millions before but this is where I am now. I wanna go for my phd and I hope to reestablish myself in business. But I can’t again let my social life suffer cos of where I am today. I have a job now; low paying as it is, I know if well managed, I will make it out. Even if I remain in the employ of the State Govt, I cant earn 35k forever. I am young and will keep moving on.

DISCLAIMER: grin This is not meant to force anyone to get married when he is not ready - Not at all. I just want some people to know that there are different strokes for different folks. There are too many factors that determine happiness and success in life and marriage. Your salary is just one. YOU CANT CALL ME A FOOL FOR MY DECISION. I HAVE CAREFULLY WEIGHED MY CIRCUMSTANCE AND PROSPECTS AND I FEEL I AM READY TO TAKE THE LEAP. I KNOW IT WONT BE A WALK IN THE PARK; BUT IT WONT BE TOO DIFFICULT EITHER.
FOR THE “FOOLS AT 40” WAITING FOR THEIR MILLIONS TO BUILD UP BEFORE SETTLING DOWN, TILL UNA COME.
FORGIVE ME FOR THE LONG EPISTLE.
HAD TO TAKE MY TIME SO THAT SOME PEOPLE WILL APPRECIATE THAT NO TWO PEOPLE HAVE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES AND SITUATIONS.

I PROMISE TO RAISE ANOTHER THREAD ANNUALLY TO TELL YOU HOW FAR WE HAVE GONE. wink

Thomas15:
Marketing is the lifeblood of any business!

Without it, your business is dead on arrival. It does not matter if you have the best products and services in the world. If people don’t know that you exist, it’s completely useless.

Unfortunately, too many businesses focus on being the best at what they do and have not focused enough on creating effective marketing systems to get customers in the door.
Even worse, some people actually believe that if they have a product or service that’s great, people will come. While there’s some truth hidden in this statement, it doesn’t happen by accident.

Nope.

It takes strategic and systematic planning to get a steady stream of potential Customers / Clients coming in contact with your products and services and eventually, becoming paying customers & clients.

In other words, as a business owner or marketing executive, you need to create an effective marketing system that introduces people to your products and services and converts them to paying customers.

The big question right now is how to create such a marketing system.

So, STOP wasting Money!! Advertise to the RIGHT audience right now with our VERIFIED Email Addresses and Phone Numbers DATABASE.
