KPGGlobal: Civil forfeiture in the United States, also called civil asset forfeiture or civil judicial forfeiture,[1] is a process in which law enforcement officers take assets from people who are suspected of involvement with crime or illegal activity without necessarily charging the owners with wrongdoing. While civil procedure, as opposed to criminal procedure, generally involves a dispute between two private citizens, civil forfeiture involves a dispute between law enforcement and property such as a pile of cash or a house or a boat, such that the thing is suspected of being involved in a crime. To get back the seized property, owners must prove it was not involved in criminal activity. Sometimes it can mean a threat to seize property as well as the act of seizure itself.[2] Civil forfeiture is not considered to be an example of a criminal justice financial obligation.
Proponents see civil forfeiture as a powerful tool to thwart criminal organizations involved in the illegal drug trade, with $12 billion annual profits,[3] since it allows authorities to seize cash and other assets from suspected narcotics traffickers. They also argue that it is an efficient method since it allows law enforcement agencies to use these seized proceeds to further battle illegal activity, that is, directly converting value obtained for law enforcement purposes by harming suspected criminals economically while helping law enforcement financially.

jaxxy: The was a criminal settlement. if u plead guilty snd go for a settlement there won't be a need for conviction. I really appreciate our back and forth with no element of abuse so far. Kudos brethren. Back to the subject matter, with your argument, you'd realise that there is no case here then, because what the law opines and zeros down on is to bar previously convicted felons from public office. If there was no criminal conviction then there is no case |

jaxxy: what are u saying? He was guilty and forfeited to avoid jail. There was no conviction like okupe because tinubu knowing he stood no chance admited to guilt and was offered a settlement.
okupe didn't admit to guilt bt rather claimed he was innocent bt the court proceeded and found him guilty.
if tinubu didn't accept the Forfeiture settlement he was going to jail as he was clearly guilty. Your presumptions are according to the court of Public opinion or the court of law? |
Politics › Re: Why Tinubu Forfeited $460,000 In US — APC Tells Court by GogetterMD(m): 9:15pm On Apr 11, 2023 |
jaxxy: unless u are trying to tell us all the people fg charged in the dasuki gate where all innocent and the forfeiture was because they were innocent.
The forfeiture was done because they were guilty bt went for a settlement instead of a conviction. The crime was still committed and he was guilty.
if he had not done the forfeiture he would be convicted and jailed. You are presenting your argument from both sides of the divide. For the #dasukigate "brotherhood", you said said they were guilty but not convicted, eventually reaching an out of court settlement. The court did not pronounce them guilty before most of the culprits, who you'd refer to as the defendants (Dasuki, Bafarawa, Dokpesi, Metuh etc) reached a plea bargain. A more appropriate analogy would have been the case of Doyin Okupe who was convicted with a 2-year sentence before settling for an option of fine. For Bola's case, problem is there is no evidence of a criminal conviction or a plea bargain. The forfeiture for the famous 460k is enveloped under a civil case, and not a criminal one |

That's odd. Though omnivorous, civets are known to mostly restrict themselves to smaller animals and insects. It'd be extremely unusual for a civet to target a large animal like goats |

I can only say Tinubu is irredeemably dented and his "government" is already doomed.
Rememeber we are not Russia or China.
Iran that is seemly becoming successful would have achieve much more without antagonising the US. The US would do nada dear. They are in a delicate place themselves, trying to navigate the difficulties of a harsh economy, global conflict, and their waning super power status. They need more allies now than ever, and they WOULD NOT meddle in the democratic affairs of Nigeria. Besides, even if, even if, the USA POTUS past and present has wined and dined with worse and evil leaders before, so nothing new |

TV/Movies › Re: 'Gangs Of Lagos' Movie Review by GogetterMD(m): 10:07pm On Apr 08, 2023 |
CaveAdullam: The movie, as well with others like King Of Boys, follow in line in capturing the ugly nature of Lagos state politics and Nigeria at large.
More movies like this will help people become more cognizant of what's going on in their community and nation, and proffer effective ways for change.
As with Nollywood, some scenes were predictable, e.g when Gift shot Kazeem at the end. Nollywood like their counterpart, Hollywood, giving masculine role to the feminine always make movies less interesting. Watching Gift (Adesua Etomi) fight hardened and tough criminals made the movie had tinctures of caricature. Let men do their thing; ditto for women.
Lessons learnt:
1. Crime is an unending loop once there are myriads of benefits attached.
2. Revenge is a cycle. Only pure justice can stop it.
3. Politicians are only loyal to their bellies and pockets. No matter how loyal you're to them, they'll use you as a pawn to leverage, either to gain more or escape danger.
4. True love never dies. It can be separated, but it keeps burning.
5. Don't taste crime. Once you do, you enter into an interminable tunnel of brief joy and long sorrows.
6. Don't be a pawn on the chessboard of politicians. Deal with them from afar and with wisdom.
7. Being a good parent matters a lot. You must re-evaluate all your plans once you become a parent. It's your duty to protect your community by raising good children.
8. No true friends in gangs of criminals. Two thieves are not best of friends but worst enemies. Their proclamation of love is mere pretence.
9. Deal with trouble at the root stage. Because it becomes impossible when it germinate and grow tall.
10. We must put the community above the self. Only then bribery and corruption can be curbed to the lowest.
Gangs of Lagos is a good movie. Go watch it.
Thanks. Great posits you posted here, I doff my hat for you. Number 2 though, I can't take it out of my mind. That's deep |

layzie: News so hastily put up but one can deduce the following: 1. Police were called but as usual came a long time after action was over. 2. Police as usual recovered shell casing 3. Police this time recovered corpse from a hospital...meaning family members had taken the victims to hospital before police got there 4. The key to unraveling the supposed unknown men lies in victimology. Who are the victims and y them? 5. Good news, there is a survivor. An interview with him should unravel who the supposed unknown gun men are.
Peace Now wey police don kuku ma talk the location of the survivor, is it not easier for the culprits to go finish their job and tie up the loose ends? |

The phrase "stolen mandate" has been trending lately on social media.

How was it his, to begin with? and how it got stolen from him.?
I'm not entirely sure of any of those 2 questions. Could you please explain in detail what mandate is being referred to, and what evidence, if any, supports the claim?
