FOR PEACEFUL PROTEST AND NOT VANDALISM

In all democratic state, peaceful assembly and protest is usually enshrine in the constitution as part of fundamental human right. Nigeria as a country also have this in its 1999 constitution which we are currently using.

Peaceful protest is the coming together of people with like-mind in other to show displeasure concerning any policy made by government, while vandalism is when protesters start destroying government properties in the process of protesting.

I was so amazed when I saw the havoc done on state properties by the SSS student in Oyo state while protesting against the Public and Private Partnership agenda of the state government and I was just asking myself what they will do if they are in tertiary institution, when they can go to the length of destroying state property to show their grievances at their current age and educational level.

No matter the level of our displeasure for any policy of government, we should not destroy any property that belong to the government because it is our property and a Yoruba adage says,"Eni ti nbinu, to ko sinu egun; ti inu e baro, tinu egun o ba ro nko" (An angry person that enter thorn, what will happen if he is no longer angry but the thorn is still angry).

As Nigerian, we need to change our mentality that protest and vandalism work hand-in-hand and that we can not achieve our aims without vandalism.

Therefore, it is quite important for us to ask ourselves these salient questions before we embark on any vandalism;
1) What are the uses of placards and song in protest?
2) If government properties are destroyed, how will government source for fund to renovate or reconstruct such properties?

If we can provide sincere answers to these questions, I am very sure that we abstain from destroying any government property during protest.
