ASR AFRICA AWARDS N10 MILLION WIDOWS’ GRANT TO THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCIETY (IWS) IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 2024 INTERNATIONAL WIDOWS’ DAY
Lagos, June 12th, 2024

The Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative for Africa (ASR Africa), in commemoration of the 2024 International Widows’ Day, has presented a N10 million grant to the International Women’s Society (IWS) in Lagos. Dr. Ubon Udoh MD/CEO of ASR Africa announced this donation during a Widows and Empowerment Feast organized by IWS in Lagos, Nigeria. The grant is part of ASR Africa’s ongoing efforts to invest in social development as one of its primary areas of focus.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Adeola Adebanke, the chairperson of the Widows’ Trust Fund of IWS, expressed her utmost joy and satisfaction toward the grant donated to the organization by the Chairman of ASR Africa and the BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu. In her statement, she prayed that the chairman continues to make giant strides and break new boundaries.

During a goodwill message, Dr Ubon Udoh (MD/CEO, ASR Africa) appreciated the good job done so far by International Women Society since its establishment in 1957. He mentioned that the grant is a testament of the commitment of the Chairman of ASR Africa and the BUA group at improving the livelihoods and welfare of Nigerians. He added that the grant, which will be distributed to widows in partnership with IWS, is aimed at bringing relief to the beneficiaries while ensuring its relevance and sustainability.

The high point of the event was the presentation of the grant to the beneficiaries. In addition, 250 widows received palliative care packs from BUA Foods Plc which comprise rice, pasta, edible oil and semolina. The widows who were visibly grateful, expressed their gratitude to ASR Africa, its chairman, and executives of BUA Foods Plc for the timely palliative care packs received.

The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa), the philanthropic initiative of the Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu (CFR, CON), has kicked off the construction of the N250 million Abdul Samad Rabiu College of Health Sciences Office Block for Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto State. The construction of this office block was kicked off with the groundbreaking ceremony which was held today within the institution’s premises.

The project, which is a one-storey facility, will comprise twenty (20) staff offices, the office of the Departmental Head, a Panel Room, staff convenience as well as storage spaces. This became necessary following the expansion of the College facilities comprising five (5) Faculties and a School of Medical Laboratory Sciences with various Departments spread across the faculties and the school.

At the groundbreaking event, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor L. S. Bilbis, welcomed the ASR Africa team with profound gratitude and expressed satisfaction with the level of support received so far from the Chairman of ASR Africa, and the BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu. He noted that the project, upon completion, will accommodate its growing academic programs and students and that the choice of the project was in response to this pressing expansion need.

In his response, Dr. Ubon Udoh, the Managing Director of ASR Africa, appreciated the University's outstanding performance in Health and Medical Sciences. He reiterated the commitment of the Chairman of ASR Africa, Abdul Samad Rabiu to supporting quality education within the tertiary education system in Nigeria. Dr. Udoh urged the institution to focus on the sustainability of this noble project and provide the necessary support to the construction team for the speedy completion and delivery of the project.

ASR Africa is currently undertaking several health and educational interventions in Sokoto State for 2.5 Billion Naira. These include the construction of the ASR Africa Administrative building for the College of Health Technology, Gwadabawa, Administrative Building and School Clinic for the School of Nursing, Tambuwal; and 2 units of faculty buildings, 1 unit of Administrative Building, 1 unit of Hostel and a Complete Water Scheme at the Sokoto State University College of Medical Sciences.

At least the current situation of the economy of Nigeria is forcing the rich to think twice before flaunting wealth and affluence.

We complained so much about this economy killing businesses? How many of the executives of these multinationals have cut down their luxury lifestyles to protect shareholders' funds? How many of these executives have made sacrifices to keep the company afloat and save shareholders from this type of tears? Some of these shareholders too will not question the lifestyles of these executives ones they have been treated well. Until we begin to question, query and challenge these companies' executives about their luxury living at the expense of shareholders' protection, we have not started.

Two persons have been confirmed dead in a boat mishap at Powerline, Ikoyi-Link Bridge in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, said 17 passengers were involved in the boat mishap.


Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that the boat was conveying the passengers from Sandfil to the Ikorodu area of Lagos and capsized at Powerline.


He noted that an investigation gathered from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) officials revealed that the driver of the boat rammed into a high-tension pole flooded by water which led to the incident.

The LASEMA boss said: “Unfortunately, two adults lost their lives (a male and a female) and other 15 passengers were unharmed.

“The body of an adult female was retrieved from the water and subsequently transported from the incident scene to LASWA head office at Falomo before being was confirmed dead by the LRU paramedics.

“The adult female remains have been bagged and await the arrival of the SEHMU officials.

“The search for the body of the adult male is ongoing.”

Oke-Osanyintolu added that LASEMA officials alongside LRU Paramedics, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASWA, and the Nigeria Police Force were joint responders at the incident scene.
