Our problems are old politicians who think Nigeria is their personal property. Not that they performed well while they ruled, yet they see Nigeria as a their property that they can bounce on any time they like and loot the treasury to their satisfaction. |

A student of the National Open University of Nigeria, Abdulmalik Sa’idu, has been languishing in a police cell for over 20 days on the orders of the Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, for posting details of an alleged fertiliser scam in the state on his Facebook timeline. This was disclosed to PREMIUM TIMES by Mr. Sa’idu’s family and lawyer. Abdulmalik was first invited to the Katsina Government House on August 28 by a phone caller who claimed he had a message for him. But when Abdulmalik arrived at the governor’s office, he was promptly arrested, handcuffed and taken to Batagarawa Police Station just outside the state capital, Katsina, and detained on the orders of Mr. Shema’s aide-de-camp, Shehu Koko, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP. According to his father, Maiyawo Sa’idu, while the young student was not charged with any offence, he was accused of cloning the governor’s phone number and using same to call the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affair, Sani Makana, with instructions that Mr. Makana deposit N3 million in his account. Mr. Sa’idu said his son was innocent. He said if indeed Abdulmalik cloned the governor’s number to dupe a commissioner he wouldn’t be tricked to come to the Government House to be arrested. “I think they are trying to frame him. I know my son cannot clone the governor’s number and call a commissioner to put three million into his account,” Mr. Saidu told PREMIUM TIMES. He said Abdulmalik was arrested because he posted details of an alleged fertiliser scam by the governor on his Facebook page. Mr. Saidu said prior to his son’s illegal detention, some officials of the state government had warned his son to desist from criticising the governor on Facebook. On one occasion, the General Manager of Katsina State Road Maintenance Agency, Jamilu Umar, threatened to pay N2 million to thugs or policemen to kill Abdulmalik if he doesn’t stop criticising the governor publicly, Mr. Saidu said. Governor Shema’s Chief Press Secretary, Sani Malumfashi, rejected repeated calls made to his mobile phone after this reporter told him he was calling about Abdumalik’s case. The Saidus’ case comes days after global rights group, Amnesty International, released a damning report accusing the Nigerian police of arbitrarily arresting, torturing and killing thousands of Nigerians without following legal process. The report accused the police of running “torture chambers” where detainees are abused for money or for confessions. The police dismissed the allegations as “falsehoods and innuendos” saying the Force does not tolerate torture and that where it occurs, officials responsible are sanctioned. But Abdulmalik’s arrest points to how widespread arbitrary arrests have remained even for the flimsiest of reasons. Many such arrests are effected on the directives of senior state officials, including governors. In November 2012, a civil servant in Bauchi State, who questioned the financial integrity of the governor, Isa Yuguda, was immediately dismissed on direct orders of the governor. In a Facebook post, Abbas Faggo had accused Mr. Yuguda of corruption, questioning the source of funding of the governor’s son’s wedding which took place then. Mr. Faggo was first suspended, and later arrested by the police. He was eventually arraigned before the Chief Magistrate of the state for the same offence. The judge, Adamu Madaki, struck out the case because “it was not properly filed.” A letter terminating Mr. Faggo’s appointment, signed by one Ibrahim Shehu for the Head of Service of the State, said his services were no longer needed. Barely a year after the Bauchi case, the Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, ordered the arrest of a businessman, Tonye Okio, for also criticising him on Facebook. Mr. Okio, who was also a former Abuja Liaison officer for Bayelsa State, was arrested on October 26 at his Abuja residence. He was subsequently blindfolded and driven to Bayelsa by the Special Investigation Bureau, SIB. The police also stripped Mr. Okio of his mobile gadgets and all postings on his Facebook account about Mr. Dickson were deleted. Two days after his arrest, the Bayelsa police released a statement that Mr. Okio was arrested for “seditious publications against the Bayelsa governor”. “This is to inform the general public and the good people of Bayelsa State in particular that the Bayelsa police command has succeeded in apprehending one Tonye Okio ‘M’ of Otiokpoti, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State for the offence of seditious publications,” the police said in a statement. “The suspects whose syndicate members are now at large will be appropriately arraigned in court when investigation is complete.” Police detained Mr. Okio for 10 days without trial before his lawyer filed a case at a Bayelsa High Court demanding his fundamental rights be enforce and that he be charged to court if he has indeed done anything wrong. A day before the case was to be heard, the police charged Mr. Okio before a Magistrate Court for defamatory publication against the Bayelsa governor. After taking his plea, the Magistrate Court adjourned the case to November 21 for trial. Mr. Okio was eventually released after spending 86 days behind bars. Katsina family denied access to Abdulmalik In Katsina, Mr. Sa’idu said he is worried about the wellbeing of his son after relatives were abruptly stopped from seeing him a week into his being detained. “For the first week they used to bring him out to me. He would eat in front of me and they would take him back to the cell but for more than 12 days now, we have not seen him. They told me that they have a directive from above not to bring him to me,” he said. “The DPO (Divisional Police Officer) told me they have a directive from the Government House not to bring him out for his family or anybody in Katsina to see him.” Akin Ajayi, a Kaduna based lawyer, who is helping the family on the case, said the DPO of Batagarawa Police Station told him he had order from above not to release Abdulmalik on bail. “I spoke to the DPO of the Batagarawa Police Station and he said he cannot do anything because it was an order from above,” he said. Mr. Ajayi said as a lawyer, the governor should realise that he was breaking the law by holding the boy beyond 48 hours on a “frivolous claim.” “The governor is a lawyer, his deputy is a lawyer and the attorney general is a lawyer and they all know that it is wrongful of them to arrest someone and keep him in detention for more than 48 hours on a frivolous claim that the boy cloned the governor’s number and wanted to collect N3 million and some other concocted allegations which are not proven. And they now kept the boy incommunicado. His family cannot reach him, and these days because of the security situation in the north, he could be killed,” he added. Mr. Ajayi warned that if Abdulmalik was not released he was going to send a petition to the National Human Rights Commission and the Inspector General of Police. The DPO of Batagarawa declined to talk to PREMIUM TIMES after he was asked on whose orders Abdulmalik was being held beyond the 48 hours stipulated by law. The Police PRO, Abubakar Sadiq, also refused to return several calls after promising to find out the details of the case. https://m.premiumtimesng.com/headlines/168397-katsina-gov-shema-orders-student-detained-indefinitely-for-criticising-him-on-facebook.html |

Controversy surrounding the allegations leveled against the Chairman of Mobilisation and Organisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Buruji Kashamu yesterday took a new dimension as the United States Court sitting in Chicago released his case file number for the first time and urged Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to hand him over. Bright said, “We learnt that Alhaji Kashamu is deliberately delaying his case before the court. We are waiting for him to appear because the case before him is still pending. We, therefore urge Nigerian government to release him. We learnt that the man in question is a powerful politician in Nigeria.” Kashamu, had August 18, this year filed an order of mandamus (motion for dismissal) against his indictment by a US court, for allegedly attempting to import heroin into the country 16 years ago. But, Justice Richard Norgle in his ruling turned down Kashamu’ s request and urged him to submit himself for trial. Kashamu was indicted by a US court in 1998, which alleged that he was a key player of an international smuggling ring dealing of narcotics. He was charged in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Chicago along thirteen persons, with conspiracy to import heroin into the United States and distribute. The Royal Court of Justice in England presided over by Lord Justice Pill and Mr. Justice Bell had, in 2003, granted unconditionally release to Kashamu when the US Justice Department could not substantiate its claims that he (Kashamu) was the most wanted Alhaji who was allegedly mentioned by others arrested as their principal conspirator. The UK authority declared that it was discovered that Kashamu’s case was a case of mistaken identity, stressing that the Chicago prosecutors at that time had also tainted their eyewitness identification evidence by failing to disclose that one Mr. Nicolas Fillmore, one of the co-defendants, failed to pick him (Kashamu) out of a photo line-up. But, the Chicago District Court Judge Norgle who, apart from faulting the British government’s handling of an extradition case filed against Prince Kashamu, claimed that it was the testimony and evidence produced by the Nigerian government that led to his release in England. The judge also said that Kashamu’s status as a political figure in Nigeria and his relationship with President Goodluck Jonathan would not make an extradition attempt against him successful in England. Prince Kashamu, in a statement through his Attorney’s chambers in the United States has said, “I am not a drug peddler as the US court claimed. I have been the one who has been going to various courts in the US since 2009 to remove the stain of the purported indictment which was erroneously made against me because I am convinced that such a move would not only clear my name but also put a stop to the blackmail and the campaign of calumny against my person.” http://www.africanexaminer.com/heroine-us-wants-jonathan-to-hand-over-buruji-kashamu-for-prosecution/ |

•Islamist sect strikes alliance with dreaded ISIS, Al-Shabab An organization in the United Kingdom (UK) has revealed why the Boko Haram terror group suddenly changed strategy from just killing and moving on to occupying captured territories and declaring them strongholds. The Islamist sect’s latest strategy was made possible through an alliance with the dreaded multinational terror group, Islamic State for Iraq and Syria (ISIS)and Al-Shabab.A report said it was the outcome of the meeting that made Boko Haram commenced the new strategy of overrunning places and declaring them territorial conquest enclaves, a system that was alien to the group until recently. Prior to that meeting that led to the change, Boko Haram had only attacked, killed, maimed and moved on. But the alliance with the other terror groups educated it on the need to hold on to territories as conquest enclaves as that would further make it difficult to be repelled. Facts of the revelation were like a confirmation that Boko Haram actually has links with other Islamic terror groups in other parts of the world. Economist and presenter Martin Summers, in an online publication in the UK, gave details of a secret strategy meeting that recently took place during the lesser hajj in Saudi Arabia between senior representatives from Boko Haram, Al Qaeda in the Maghreb and Islamic State and Al-Shabab. Summers, in the revelation, specified certain shocking details about the meeting, including the fact that the terrorists were agreeing to strategize as a united front – rather than as disparate groups. The meeting took place under cover of the holy pilgrimage to Mecca and the Saudi authorities were apparently unaware of it. “Amongst decisions taken were for Boko Haram to switch strategy from simply launching terrorist attacks to holding territory and declaring a caliphate, which crosses the Nigerian and Cameroonian borders. These explosive revelations align closely with the speech given by President Barak Obama in the United States (US), last week where he made reference to the growing links among terrorist organizations around the world and the need to take action. The UK reports seems to have uncovered one specific reason for Obama’s concern. Summers, who has a reputation for breaking big stories ahead of the mainstream media, suggested that American Secretary of State “Senator Kerry’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia may also have been linked to the terrorist strategy meeting in some way. He also stated that he believes the leaked information relating to the terrorists’ meeting emanated from the UK Secret Services; to draw attention to the involvement of Boko Haram in this growing international terrorist crisis and to force international action on the issue. “These revelations followed recent accusations by the Australian negotiator hired by the Federal Government, Dr. Stephen Davis, who has alleged ‘sponsorship’ of Boko Haram by senior northern Nigerian politicians as well as the flow of Al Qaeda money through the Central Bank of Nigeria. “What seems certain from these further revelations is that the ongoing war against Boko Haram by Nigeria is part of a much wider battle against international terrorism, and not simply a local issue,” Summers reported. The revelation was a major “uncovering of a growing international concern regarding the alignment of international terrorist groups and the involvement of renegade political elements within Nigeria with this terrorist network,” it noted. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=82429 |
A pressure group, One Nigeria for Jonathan Foundation (ONJF), on Wednesday held a one million-man march for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in Bariga, Lagos State. Chairman of ONJF Lagos State, Dr. Charles Akintoye, told the crowd that Lagosians have numerous reasons to support President Jonathan for re-election in 2015 and that the reasons are not just for the benefit of Lagosians but for the entire people of Nigeria irrespective of tribal or religious differences since Lagos State is a microcosm of Nigeria. He listed some of the achievements of President Jonathan in education, transportation, agriculture, electricity oil and gas, establishment of 127 al- majiri schools in the North to curb the spread of child vagrancy and security menace. Others are include establishment of 10 new Federal Universities to give wider opportunity to all from any part of the country, the replacement of unserviceable railway wagons and coaches, opening of more railway routes from Lagos to other parts of the country to ease interstate transportation and reduce road carnage, construction of 10,000 low cost housing units across the six-geopolitical zones of the country and unbundling and privatisation of electricity generation and distribution in the country. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2014/09/18/one-million- |

A vote for el-rufai is a vote for Boko Haram. Kaduna Christians is in trouble if........... |
The higher command of the Nigerian Army is not addressing the issue at hand. The soldiers were complaining that the insurgents infiltrated their ranks, they are not well kitted and no ammunition to confront the insurgents. Have they taken it upon themselves to find out the veracity of these claims? Why was the GOC retired? Any complicity?. Only two days ago, we learnt some soldiers were going from Benin to the North for training; and Boko Haram members waylaid them between Okene and Lokoja wounding four soldiers. How did Boko Haram get to know that soldiers were detailed to go for training if there were no moles in their ranks?. The Army should rise up to the occasion and fish out the moles. Like the American diplomat told them “we have passed the time of pride”. On the other hand, whatever action we want to take in life we have to weigh the pros and cons. One has to count the cost. The cost these soldiers may have to pay for their actions is too grave. I will only pray Uncle Jonathan to have mercy on these soldiers as a father and also take time to find out the problems of his men on the battlefield. God will help him to take the right decision. |

Those discharged are David Robert, Mohammed Sani, Iseh Ubong, Sebastine Gwaba and Naaman Samuel. Those who were sentenced to death are Jasper Braidolor, David Musa, Friday Onuh, Yusuf Shuaibu, Igonmu Emmanuel, Andrew Ugbede, Nurudeen Ahmed, Ifeanyi Alukagba, Alao Samuel, Amadi Chukwuma, Alan Linus, and Stephen Clement. |
I wonder what prompted them to attacked their GOC, despite the fact that they know they will be facing death penalties for Mutiny. The Nigerian Army should addressed the motive behind these soldiers action to thwart the reoccurrence of such action. This is too bad, How many Boko Haram, that have been killing scores of people sentenced to Death? Somebody please tell them that jailing and executing demoralized soldiers is certainly not an effective way of instilling discipline in the army. |
