By Sam Eyoboka with Agency reports 70 Christians have been reportedly murdered in Plateau State, including one pastor. The body count was said to have piled up after at least a half dozen attacks allegedly perpetrated by cattle herders. Herders frequently terrorize Christian farmers in Plateau, Bauchi, Kaduna, Taraba, Benue, among others. The herdsmen regularly raid Christian villages opening up a hail of gunfire, burning homes and churches, and shooting their victims when they run outside to escape the fires. “The jihadists, in their quest to eliminate Christians in Plateau State and their thirst for blood, have succeeded in killing Christians and burning their houses,” said Gyang, a local man whose full name is withheld to protect his safety. The most deadly attack occurred on May 2 when herdsmen reportedly set fire to the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) located in Foron Town, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA), killing 27 Christians. The victims included Rev. Luka Gwom and a congregant named Pauline who was married just two weeks prior in the same church building. The recent raids have all occurred in two areas of Plateau State: Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas. These frightening experiences have become nearly a weekly terror for Christians in the region. From April 25 to May 11, Gyang reported at least six attacks on more than eightvillages, some of them targeted more than once during that time span. “We in Riyom and Barkin Ladi LGAs have been under siege and invasion. Lives have been lost almost every day, and [there is] no serious action from any quarter by the government. But we are still faithful to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Gyang said as he recounted an attack that killed two members of the Rim Town community as they were returning from the burial of fellow Christians who were slaughtered in a Fulani raid that happened just days before. Sadly, this recent string of assaults is nothing new for brothers and sisters in Christ in the Middle Belt region. In mid-March, Muslim Fulani cattle herders massacred 82 Christians in a village in Benue State, according to Nigerian news reports. However, the secular media and Nigerian authorities have been slow to acknowledge these events as Christian persecution. “It is the longstanding issue over grazing rights and cattle rustling between Egba and Fulani people,” police spokesman Ezeala Austin said after the March attack. Despite the historic tensions Austin cites, witnesses to the assaults often recount that the herdsmen chanted “Allahu Akhbar” during the attack, the Arabic saying, “God is Great,” which has become associated with jihadist Muslim terrorism. The herdsmen also continually and specifically target Christian villages. One Plateau State government official vaguely referenced recent incidents of cattle rustling by predominantly-Christian tribes in Wase LGA in connection to the attacks of the past month, but reports suggest no linkage between the events. Wase LGA is located 160 miles away from Barkin Ladi and Riyom. International Christian Concern’s Regional Manager of Africa, Mr. Troy Augustine, said: “The world should wake up to the forgotten persecution happening all over Nigeria’s Middle-Belt region. Extremist Muslim Fulani herders are regularly and consciously attacking Christian villages and slaughtering our brothers and sisters in Christ. I don’t know what else needs to be explained to acknowledge that these people are persecuted because of their faith”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/pastor-69-christians-murdered-in-plateau/ |
FROM FEMI FOLARANMI, YENAGOA More facts have emerged on why lawmakers representing President Goodluck Jonathan’s constituency in the National Assembly and the Bayelsa State House of Assembly dumped him for the All Progressives Congress (APC) two-weeks to the end of his tenure. Senator Clever Ikisikpo representing Bayelsa East Senatorial district, Hon Nadu Karibo representing Ogbia Federal Constituency and Hon Azibola Omekwe representing Ogbia constituency 3 in the State House of Assembly had during their defection at the APC national secretariat said they were leaving the PDP for the APC because aside the fact that the structure of the party has been hijacked by Governor Henry Seriake Dickson as decisions are imposed on party members, there is also the need to serve their constituents better by ensuring that they do not miss out in the direction the nation is going at the national level. Saturday Sun investigations however revealed that the trio of Ikisikpo, Karibo and Omekwe decided to move to APC to embarrass Jonathan over his failure to ensure they retained their tickets during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries. They are angry that Jonathan watched helplessly as Dickson and few stakeholders in Ogbia brought in people to replace them after he had assured them that they would retain their tickets. During the primaries, Mr Ben Murray-Bruce had replaced Ikisikpo, Mrs Sodago Festus- Omoni replaced Karibi, while Mietama Obordor replaced Omekwe. The three lawmakers who were on the side of former governor Timipre Sylva during his travails with Jonathan and the PDP leadership over the Bayelsa governorship race in 2011 decided to move to the APC to neutralize the political influence of Jonathan after May 29 in his constituency. Though Ikisikpo is said to be nursing a governorship ambition on the APC platform, Karibo in an interview with Saturday Sun said their defection was to embrace the wind of change and make Ogbia people benefit from the Buhari’s administration. Checks indicated that the sudden defection of the three lawmakers has thrown the leadership of the state PDP into panic especially as it is believed that the political associates of Sylva are regrouping to launch an onslaught against the PDP in the state ahead of the coming governorship election in the state. Findings further revealed that with the defection of the lawmakers, more lawmakers in the State House of Assembly who are already in talks with Sylva on how to perfect their defection would announce their move to the APC in the coming days. Also aggrieved party members who believed they are hounded by Dickson are also discussing with the leadership of the APC in the state on the possibility of defecting before the PDP announces their expulsion. Dickson in his reaction to the defection of the lawmakers had also confirmed that members facing disciplinary action of the party would defect from the party when he said the public should expect more defections in the coming days from those who worked against the candidates of the party in the state House of Assembly elections. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=119795 |

IN a bid to reduce cases of micronutrient deficiency, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against buying fortified foods improperly stored in markets, especially those exposed directly to sunlight. NAFDAC Chief Regulatory Officer in Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate, Mrs. Benedicta Obaseki, who gave the advice on Thursday during the agency ‘s post-market surveillance on the quality of vitamin A fortification in fortified foods at Ojunwoye Market, Mushin, Lagos, explained that direct sunlight deletes vitamins in fortified foods. Obaseki explained that the post-market surveillance, which was witnessed by the media, was meant to randomly ascertain the similitude and consistency of Vitamin A in fortified foods at industry level and those sold at various markets. As part of the exercise, the agency’s staff went round the market with mobile machines to sample Vitamin A fortified foodstuffs, especially vegetable oil and sugar sold at the market. The exercise became a centre of attraction at the market as some traders momentarily abandoned their businesses to witness the random exercise in the market. Food Fortification Programme is an intervention to enhance the quality of readily available and more affordable foods nutritionally by addition of some vital minerals and vitamins required by the body. Although these minerals and vitamins are required in minute quantities, their absence in the body can cause severe Micronutrient Deficiency Diseases (MDD). Available evidence showed that Nigeria has one of the highest rates of child and maternal mortality in the world with Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) being a major contributory factor. Micronutrient malnutrition, also known as hidden hunger, has become a major devastating nutritional problem affecting the health of children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Major Micronutrient Deficiency Disorders include Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD), Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) and Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA). Obaseki advised Nigerians to buyonly fortified foods. “The public should always look out for NAFDAC registration number , because before a product is registered with NAFDAC, it must be fortified . We cannot allow the producer of these food vehicles to produce without fortifying them. In looking at NAFDAC registration number, when the product is registered with NAFDAC, you will see an eye logo with an A, which is a symbol of fortification. You have to look at the expiration date to know whether the product is expiring or is still in tact. Sun And Food Products “We are advising traders to store these products away from direct sunlight. Some of them that store them under shed are protecting these products from the sun. Our advise is that traders should not leave their products under the sun, because sun affects the quantity of f vitamin A in these food products. “We have gone to some factories in Lagos . Our report so far shows that some of the companies are fortifying according to standards, while some are not doing it up to standards. The reason we are here is that we want to ascertain the level of compliance of these manufacturers of wheat, flour, vegetable and sugar. That is why we are auditing their factories ; we have gone to their factories to audit their processes to see where the problem is coming from . “Even we go to the fortification line to see whether they are dosing properly, whether they are buying the right vitamin premix, which they are using to fortify their products. We have analysed some reports . Some are meeting up but some are not meeting up to standard. “We are here in the market to check the products to see whether the quality of vitamin A we inspected in the factory is the same with the ones in the market, because we know that handily is another issue on the quality of vitamin A. We want to ascertain the quantity of vitamin A in the market, so that we will be able to advise them on how to store these products rightly. Benefits Of Vitamin A To The Body “The major objectives of this food fortification is to reduce the prevalence of micro-nutrient deficiency among the most vulnerable and at risk population by 20 per cent. This can be achieved through compliance by the industry to produce fortified foods and consumers who consume these products. Micro-nutrient deficiency is still a huge problem in Nigeria despite the enormous consequence for economic growth and human development. These nutritional problems are hidden and silent. The warning are signs are not often recognised, and the victim is not aware of the problem until the victim starts suffering from health problem, arising from micronutrient deficiency. “That is why we call it the hidden hunger, because the symptoms are not known . One out of four children under the age of five suffers from vitamin A deficiency. About 31 per cent of our mothers are iodine deficient . Moreso, the correlation between suffering, death and malnutrition is real. A child dying as a result of a common childhood illness is a casualty of vitamin A deficiency. “A child that is away from school as a result of poor learning ability is suffering because he lacks iodine. A child may emaciate from diarrhoea because he is not well breastfed. What of our young ones who die after childbirth because of anaemia? With these facts, it is unimaginable to question or doubt the importance of vitamin A to achieving socio-economic of any country,” Obaseki said. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/dont-buy-fortified-foods-exposed-to-sunlight-nafdac-warns-consumers/ |

•Firm faults directive CITING presidential order, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has directed the management of LADOL Integrated Logistics to relocate its ongoing $500million fabrication and integrated yards project in Takwa Bay within Apapa pilotage area in Lagos State to Aggey, Bayelsa State. But the company’s management described the directive as “shocking’’ and out of tone with the agreement it entered into with its technical partners and the federal government. The one paragraph letter was dated April 27, 2015, and signed by NPA’s General Manager (Capital Project), A.R. Mohammed, on behalf of the Managing Director. It was titled: “Re: Joint Venture Partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries for the USD$500 Million development of fabrication and integration yards for EGINA and Future Projects”. The letter read: “Please, be informed that Mr President has via PRESS/S9/MT/212 of April 20, 2015 approved that the FPSO (Floating Production Storage & Offloading) project can be located at Agge, Bayelsa State when the facilities to handle such operations are developed. In addition, the project can be conveniently located at any dedicated Oil and Gas Terminal”. Meanwhile, the President, according to NPA, has approved that henceforth; all oil and gas related cargoes must be handled only at the designated terminals in Onne, Warri and Calabar ports. The directives signed on behalf of NPA Managing Director by General Manager (M&O), A.A. Goje, said: “In view of this, vessels coming to Nigeria with oil & gas related cargo excluding petroleum products are advised to first go to the appropriate NPA concessioned terminals to be cleared by customs and other relevant authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines among others”. The directive also advised owners of such vessels to pay necessary dues/charges and obtain releases “before proceeding to locations for final discharge, including those meant for LADOL. Reacting to the development, yesterday, the Managing Director of LADOL, Dr. Amy Jadesimi said the company was shocked by the development. She explained that it would send wrong signals to private investors and foreign technical partners, pointing out that a lot of resources have been deployed to put the facilities in place. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/presidency-orders-relocation-of-500m-port-project-to-bayelsa/ |
From TIMOTHY OLANREWAJU, Maiduguri Mosul Youth Resistance Movement in Mosul, Iraq have killed five Boko Haram militants. According to BasNews, the dead militants were Boko Haram members being trained in Mosul by the Islamic State (IS). Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Mosul spokesperson, Saed Mamuzini, told BasNews that the Mosul Youth Resistance Movement, which was recently formed to act against IS in Mosul, attacked the Boko Haram insurgents in the Dargaza neighbourhood of eastern Mosul on Wednesday, killing five of them. “The Nigerian Boko Haram militants were in Mosul to take part in a military training course conducted by Islamic State (IS),” Mamuzini added. Boko Haram had pledged allegiance to IS some months ago and appears to be in close co-operation with the group ever since. This is the first report of the presence of Boko Haram militants in Iraq. Meanwhile, security sources said yesterday the insurgents used female suicide bombers as shield in Wednesday’s failed attack on Maiduguri, Borno State capital. A military source, who participated in the operation to repel the attack on the city, also told Daily Sun that the female bombers “pretended as if they were residents of the community behind Giwa Barracks of the Nigerian Army and fleeing from the battle-field.” Some members of the Civilian JTF (youth vigilante), who were also on ground to repel the insurgents reportedly saw some women near the battlefield, begging for help. The Civilian JTF members led by some troops were said to have moved in to save the women unknown to them that they were suicide bombers. “Some of the women started exploding one-after-the-other,” a military source said on condition of anonymity. The explosion from the female bombers killed about nine of the women, six Civilian JTF members and some other civilians, another source said. He said some soldiers were also injured even as speculation was rife in Maiduguri that the military lost some of its personnel. But Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col Sani Usman, told Daily Sun that the Army “did not lose any soldier.” However, a 24 hours curfew has been imposed on the city yesterday following Wednesday’s dusk attack. A statement by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations (DDAPR), 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Colonel Tukur Gusau, said the curfew was imposed in view of the security problem. “In view of the recent development within Maiduguri metropolis, a 24-hour curfew is hearby imposed on the city. This is done to protect lives and property of innocent and law abiding people of maiduguri,” the military said. The military thanked residents for their “continuous support and co-operation,” adding that “the situation is firmly under control.” www.sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=119603 |

I wonder why those who died in River state are more important to Buhari than thousands who died in the north since 2011 election |
O’tega : We’ll reclaim Delta By Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja
The president-elect, General Muhammudu Buhari (rtd), has again vowed to unearth and deal with those involved in the violence that trailed the conduct of the last general election in Rivers State. Buhari, who stated this while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the state, regretted that many lives were lost in the process due to the desperation of some politicians to win elections at all costs. Buhari said: “We will confront them with facts and figures. We will not forgive and we will not forget those who perpetrated the killings and arson in Rivers State during the elections. At least this is the much we owe Nigerians,” he said. He also assured Nigerians that they would surely get the respect they deserve from the government, adding that there would be no army within the army or a police within the police. Earlier, former Deputy Governor of the state who led delegation, Mr. Gabriel Toby, told journalists that what happened during both presidential and the governorship elections did not reflect the wishes of the people. He described the elections as a coup, saying the calibre of persons in the delegation to Buhai had shown that Rivers people were behind the president-elect before, during and after the election, adding that the entire state would fully support the incoming government. The former deputy governor asked the president-elect not to forget the persecution and many sacrifices made by the their son, Rotimi Ameachi, for the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that the state governor and others should be compensated for their immense contributions to the victory of the APC. Meanwhile, another delegation from Delta State yesterday paid a solidarity visit to Buhari. The governorship candidate of the APC in the state, Emerhor Otega, who led the delegation, lamented the anomalies that trailed the conduct of the elections in Delta State and the South-south region. Otega alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) disenfranchised the people of the state and the South-south in both the presidential and governorship elections. He said though the people of the state voted for the APC but through a grand design, the PDP made sure that proper elections did not take place. “Result sheets were confiscated and results fabricated, written, allowing the PDP to have massive votes, while giving paltry votes to the APC in order to portray it as not existing in the two zones. “To provide a cover for this vote manipulation, PDP also resorted to violence and intimidation and ballot box snatching as a smokescreen. They effectively compromised both INEC and the security forces and this secured the declaration of PDP as winner in these states against the will and preferences of the Delta people and the two zones. “Through the certified true copy (CTC) of the card reader report that we have obtained from INEC, we have unearthed the massive fraud that PDP perpetuated in Delta State. We have filed our petitions to cancel these bogus elections in the tribunal in the state. Our election petition shows that while announced voter accreditation was over 1,017,796, the actual card reader accreditation report shows only 709,700. “A cursory look shows that the votes allocated to the PDP governorship candidate (724,680) along exceed the accredited voters as recorded by the card reader report. “With these anomalies. We are indeed very optimistic that the governorship and assembly elections in a Delta state will be nullified and a rerun ordered. Otega said In his remark, the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, thanked the Delta delegation just as he maintained that his administration would not support anybody who will undermine that right of Nigerians by whatever means. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/rivers-killings-we-ll-not-forgive-nor-forget-says-buhari/209282/ |
