The Commissioner of the Rivers State Police Command, Dan Bature has said that Governor Chibuike Amaechi has being raising false alarm against the Command because he refused to bow to pressure to release hardened criminals involved in heinous cases of murder, deadly cult activities, unlawful possession of firearms, kidnappings and sundry acts of lawlessness that ordinarily would have been charged to court but for the industrial action of the Rivers state judiciary. In a strongly worded press statement signed by the CP Dan Bature, he said: “It is strongly believed that the vituperations are frustrating signs of the Government’s inability to pressure the Command to release hardened criminals involved heinous cases of murder, deadly cult activities, unlawful firearms possession, kidnappings and sundry acts of lawlessness that ordinarily would have been charged to court but for the industrial action of the Rivers State Judiciary”. The CP said he has restrained himself from joining issues with the state governor but is once again constraint to respond to what he called “the spurious and wispy allegations against it and false alarm raised by His Excellency, Rt Hon. Chibuike R. Amaechi, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, to the effect that the Command exposes Hon. Dakuku Peterside, the Rivers State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate to danger by withdrawing policemen attached to him, unsubstantiated killings and plan to arrest supporters of his party”. He denied ever withdrawing the police cover to Dakuku Peterside as alleged by the Governor. He said that it is on record that since he assumed duty as the Commissioner of Police six months ago, he has remained focused and committed to performing my constitutional duties and responsibilities of protecting lives and property amongst others. And has refused to be provoked or drawn in unnecessary responses to the avalanche of unsubstantiated allegations, in most cases wild imaginations that are predicated in falsehood that seem to be the penchant of the State Government. Bature said he do not intend to dignify the false alarms raised in the recent press briefing by the State Government, but it is necessary to put records straight. On the recent redeployment of C4i Policemen from Hon. Dakuku Peterside a few days after the Rivers PDP called for its disbandment on allegation that it has been engaged in terror activities, Bature explained that the C4i unit were redeployed to their traditional duties of fighting violent crimes and their immediate replacement with the elite Special Protection Unit (SPU) has now been attributed to withdrawal of the policemen attached to him. He dismissed claimed by Amaechi that APC supporters were politically assassinated or hounded to prison at the behest of the state PDP. He wondered why cases of cultists’ related clashes that sometimes resulted in deaths have suddenly been attributed to killing of political party supporters. The CP said the alleged killing of seven supporters of a political party is not only unfounded as the Command has not received such report. He also wondered “arrests made on cases of unlawful possession of firearms, robbery, cultism and murder are now attributed to politics. What a mathematical wonder! Six suspects arrested and charged to court for unlawful possessions of firearms have now become over 400 supporters of a political party in our custody”. He debunked the allegation of the purported plan to arrest 307 leaders of a political party is nothing but a ruse to whip up public sympathy. Bature said the Command has no plan to arbitrarily arrest anybody. But that anyone who is not planning to cause or foster violence or breach of public peace has no cause to fear or raise false alarm. He cautioned that on security matters, “we should be mindful of the fact that security issues are not matters for comical entertainment”. The CP said the Command remains focused in its mandate to serve and protect the people and overall interest of the State. No amount of distractions would deter us from performing our constitutional assigned roles, please. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/03/18/amaechi-pressurising-me-to-free-hardened-criminals-rivers-cp/ |

FROM SEGUN OLATUNJI, ABEOKUTA I f not for providence, the Aregbede brothers, Tunde and Taiye, would have been killed by Fulani herdsmen who have for years now terrorised residents of villages dotting Ketu, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State. Twenty five-year-old Tunde and his younger brother, Taiye, 24, of Ogunba Ayetoro would have added to the statistics of Ketu residents who have fallen victims in the perennial “war” between the Fulani herdsmen and the farmers struggling over the control of the border settlements few kilometres away from the neighbouring Benin Republic. Only penultimate weekend, a mother of three, Mrs. Ayesi Balogun, was allegedly raped and hacked to death by suspected Fu lani herdsmen on her farm in Asa, one of the Ketu villages. About 12 houses were also alleged burnt by suspected Fulani herds men during a nocturnal raid carried out on Ojuegun in Ijoun penultimate Sunday. The Aregbede brothers had high hopes of getting some compensation from the Fulani herdsmen for their crops and farms allegedly eaten up and destroyed by their cattle and so headed to the Gaa (base) of the herdsmen to lay their complaints. Their hopes for compensation were, however, not only dashed, but also turned sour when they were suddenly held hostage by some of the armed herdsmen. According to them, at first, the Fulani pretended to be listening to the complaints brought by the two brothers until suddenly armed herds men emerged and surrounded them, point ing their sophisticated guns at them. Perplexed by the unexpected develop ment, the Aregbede brothers claimed that they were then seized and bound hand and legs by some of the herdsmen, who contin ued to threaten to shoot them. Unknown to the two, their ordeal in the hands of the Fulani marauders had just begun as they were soon to be forcibly fed at gunpoint with an admixture of cow dung and urine. Unwilling to eat the “special cuisine,” the two brothers were allegedly given the beating of their lives. Tunde said: “We went to the base of the Fulani because we were told that there was a committee that was responsible for paying compensation for crops and farms destroyed by the cows. They first told us they would address the matter but suddenly some armed men surrounded and overpow ered us. They said we were too bold to have come to their base to complain that their cattle destroyed our crops. “We told them we only came so that the matter could be resolved amicably but they said no, we would not leave their base alive. They then tied our hands and legs together. They started beating us. I was given a slap and I became deaf for some time.” Taiye continued: “The Fulani abducted the two of us when we went to complain to them about how their cattle destroyed our farms. They tied us together with rope. They gave us cow dung mixed with urine at gunpoint, threatening to kill us if we did not eat it. They were armed with AK-47 rifles. They vowed that they would never pay any farmer for the crops destroyed by their cows. “While we were still tied down, they started deliberating on whether to kill us or allow us to go. But at a point they untied us and asked us to go. We never thought they would let us go. It’s just God’s interven tion because we had given up hope that we would leave there alive. The Fulani herds men are still in our area. We hardly sleep at night because of the fear of the Fulani herdsmen.” A community leader, Chief Ephraim Elegbede, said schools in the area had been forced to close down because of the threat posed by suspected Fulani herdsmen: “In our area, Fulani attack has become frequent. They always attack us and kill our people. Because of them, we have no source of potable water; they always destroy our crops every year. Also, schools have been closed because we no longer allow our chil dren to go to school because of the fear that they might be attacked by the Fulani while on their way. The schools could not conduct the first term examinations because of the danger posed by the Fulani. They feed their cow with our banana and if we complain they would say it is meant to serve as the feed for their livestock.” He alleged that last year suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked a church in the area during a night vigil, killing a father and his son as well as other worshippers. Elegbede claimed that the matter had been reported to the state Police Command Headquarters in Eleweran each time it had occurred. The community leader, however, ap pealed to the state government to urgently intervene by coming to the rescue of the Ketu people. He said: “We want the state government to help us to stop the Fulani herdsmen from destroying our ancestral lands and killing our people. We are all farmers and if we are chased away from our fatherland, where else can we go to? So, the government should assist us to check the excesses of the Fulani herdsmen. We did not kill any Fulani. The problem is that because of the borders we share with Benin Republic, whenever anything happened to them over there they usually cross over to our villages in Nigeria to retaliate. We did not kill any Fulani.” lands and killing our people. We are all A group, Ketu Advancement Forum (KAF), however, accused the state govern ment of inaction over the matter. The KAF in SMS messages alleged that Governor Ibikunle Amosun had been shirking in his responsibility as the chief security officer of the state, while the Fulani herdsmen intensified their alleged killing of innocent citizens. It also accused the governor of being insensitive to the plight of the hapless Ketu people: “We are asking Governor Amosun why he’s criminally silent as chief security officer of the state over the killing of the Ketu people by herdsmen as if there’s no blood flowing in him.” But the State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said a meeting was convened between the representatives of the Fulani herdsmen and the Ketu people last week at the state Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta: “We held a meeting with them and we came up with some resolutions concerning the lingering crisis between the herdsmen and the farmers. Let’s be patient and allow the state government to implement the resolutions. By the time they implement the resolutions, peace will return to the area. “There was a standing committee. I think the committee must have submit ted the resolutions. It is a national issue as well with the Federal Government having interest in such issues and such interest has been domesticated in Ogun State such that the government, all stakeholders, particu larly the police, all of them have interest in making sure the committee presents a good report. I’m not sure they have submitted but I know there are some resolutions submitted to the state government for implementation. But with that, I don’t think there will be any problem again. “But at the meeting, they were warned to maintain the status quo, to maintain peace in the area. We don’t want them to presume. The first killing, it was a presumption, the second one, it was a presumption that Fulani killed Yoruba and Yoruba killed Fulani. We did not get any suspect at the scene, we cannot link anybody to the killings for now, whether Fulani or farmers.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=107580 An average Yoruba man is a cow |

Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, has instituted a case against the African Independent Television over a documentary on him aired on the station. Mr. Tinubu brought an ex-parte motion before a Lagos High Court seeking an order of interim injunction restraining AIT whether by itself, agents, privies and or other persons from producing or continuing to broadcast, airing, or continuing to reproduce a documentary against Mr. Tinubu. The motion also sought to restrain the TV station from continuing the broadcast of the documentary, which it started airing on March 1st and had been repeating daily, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated 5th March, 2015. The motion further noted that damages would not adequately compensate applicant/claimant if the ex-parte order was not granted and prayed that the rest of the suit may be extinguished if the ex-parte order was not granted. It also noted that there was real, imminent and urgent threat and danger of continuing to decimate the person and integrity of Mr. Tinubu by AIT by continuing to air the “offensive” broadcast if the ex-parte motion was not granted. Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and Tunji Abayomi are part of Mr. Tinubu’s legal team. Last Monday, Mr. Tinubu had written to Daar Communications Limited, the owners of AIT, threatening to sue it for airing a documentary he deemed defamatory “in all respects”. The hour-long documentary, which has been airing every day since March 1 at 11 p.m., titled “Unmasking the Real Tinubu” showcased various properties and companies across Lagos purportedly owned by Mr. Tinubu, described as “Nigeria’s biggest landlord”. The programme also claimed that Mr. Tinubu was “charged for narcotics” in 1993 in the United States. Mr. Tinubu gave the TV station 24 hours to apologize and retract the publication and demanded N20 billion as damages. “We are surprised that your media house – and we hold you responsible for the documentary – lacks simple ability to know what is justifiable for publication or understand that freedom of expression does not include deliberate defamation of character,” Mr. Tinubu said in the letter by his lawyer, Mr. Abayomi. “More disturbing is your representation that the said documentary was ‘sponsored’ without disclosing the ‘sponsors’. You cannot under law, hide under media freedom or freedom of expression to maliciously injure a citizen’s reputation.” AIT responded swiftly describing Mr. Tinubu’s claims and demands as “laughable,” noting that the station was only carrying out its constitutional responsibility to uphold the fundamental objectives of the constitution. “Daar Communications is therefore demanding a complete withdrawal of the letter under reference, which must be given wide publicity as that accorded the letter from the chambers of Tunji Abayomi,” the station said through their lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. “The media company demands an apology to be published in at least four leading national newspapers and four television stations, which must include NTA, Channels, and AIT. “The sum of one hundred billion Naira representing aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages for the irreparable injury inflicted on AIT is also being demanded.” Despite Mr. Tinubu’s earlier threat, AIT continued to air the documentary, frequently igniting public discourse on the topic on social media and other fora. The APC leader went ahead to petition the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, urging them to sanction AIT for violating Nigeria’s broadcasting code. EDITOR’S NOTE:This story has since been update to correct an error which suggested that the Court has granted accelerated hearing on the case. We have since understood that is not the case. The decampees, led by Luba Dubai, an APC chieftain, were received by the state Chairman’s wife, Sa’adiya Milgoma, at the PDP women rally in Sokoto on Tuesday. “The new entrants will be treated equally and fairly, and we should all work to ensure the success of the party at the forthcoming polls at all levels,’’ Ms. Milgoma said. A former Minister of Women Affairs, Maryam Chiroma, appealed to Nigerians, especially women not to be deceived, saying `”the re-election of Jonathan will ensure the continuation of his transformation agenda. Ms. Chiroma, who was also PDP’s former National Woman Leader, said, “the Nigerian women should use their majority population and voting power to re-elect Jonathan”. In her remark, Sarah Jubril, the Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Ethics, said the president had treated the North-West fairly and deserved to be re-elected. A member of the party’s Board of Trustees, Rabi Ibrahim, said “Jonathan is the first gender-friendly president Nigeria has ever had since independence”. “Mrs Jonathan cares about the Nigerian woman and she is passionate about improving the lives of the Nigerian children and other vulnerable groups,’’ Ibrahim said. The Special Assistant to Jonathan on Women Empowerment, Ramatu Bala, also urged the women to vote for Jonathan. Ms. Bala, a former National President of National Council for Women Society, said Mr. Jonathan’s re-election would ensure the sustenance of peace, unity and national cohesion. The wives of the Deputy Governor, PDP gubernatorial candidate and Woman Leader, Kulu Shagari, A’ishatu Wali and Kulu Rabah, promised that women would vote for the party’s candidates at all levels.
