Officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit have arrested another 46 suspected hoodlums in Oshodi area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria. Last week, the taskforce arrested 34 suspects in the same suburb in the wake of the resurgence of activities of hoodlums in the area after the general elections. Among the 46 suspects arrested on Wednesday in Oshodi were seven underage boys and six females. One of the female suspects was pregnant and also nursing a baby at the time she was arrested. She is also suffering from oedema, a disease which makes legs of pregnant women to swell. She was later released on compassionate ground. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Suspected-hoodlums-arrested-at-Oshodi-yesterday-e1432817373883.jpg The taskforce officials stormed Oshodi between 1:00pm and 2:00pm with Black Maria and armed policemen and immediately swung into action, arresting the suspects and taking them to their headquarters. One of the arrested female suspects, Cecilia, 23, was said to have been caught selling hard drugs with her sister, Tracy. Chairman of theTaskforce, Bayo Sulaiman, said Cecilia had been arrested three consecutive times, while Tracy said she ventured into drug business because she didn’t want to become a prostitute. Sulaiman said the arrest was part of effort to maintain sanity in Oshodi, especially on the rail track from Ladipo Bus Stop to Cappa Bus stop, adding that the hoodlums were arrested following complaints received by the government over the continued terror they unleashed on pedestrians. “There have been incessant complaints by residents of Oshodi over disturbance by hoodlums. The government would not allow the hoodlums return to Oshodi it cleared some years ago. “One of the female hoodlums has been arrested three times while some were arrested for the first time. They were all arrested in Oshodi for constituting nuisance. They terrorise innocent citizens in the area. “There is no hiding place for criminals and we will not hesitate to clamp down on them all. Those arrested were immediately charged to court but the underage boys among them will be referred to the correctional home for rehabilitation,” he said. |
The European Union (EU) says there are more Nigerian professionals in Europe than there are in Nigeria, warning that the development can be detrimental to the development of the country. The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Michel Arrion, disclosed this at a Conference on National Migration Policy Thematic Areas, organised by UN International Organisation for Migration in Abuja. Arrion explained that EU welcomed migration as long as it was legal, adding that “it enhances the movement of factors of production, particularly labour, especially in Europe. “Migration is good. We (Europe) like migration as long as it is legal. We need migration for various reasons. “Movement of factors of production is a good thing and labour moving freely is a very good thing. “In Europe and in other western countries, we have this specific issue of aging population. So we need fresh blood in our countries but we have to be careful sometimes about brain drain. “As you know, there are more PhD holders from Nigerian origin in Europe or in America than in Nigeria. “There are more Nigerian doctors and nurses in Europe and in America than in Nigeria. So, let’s be careful with that. It is good to attract the best people but not to the detriment of the development of your country.’’ In his remarks, the Minister of National Planning and Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr Abubakar Sulaiman, said Nigeria was grappling with a wide range of migration issues. He said “Nigeria as the most populous country on the continent grapples with a wide range of migration issues, from internal migration to massive intra and inter-regional migration. “Migration of highly skilled and unskilled labour workforce, trafficking in persons, Diaspora engagement and remittances amongst others, have shaped the current migratory trends and dominated contemporary migration discourse.” Represented by Mr Bassey Akpanyung, the Secretary of NPC, Sulaiman pledged Nigeria’s commitment toward migration issues. He said the Federal Government’s commitment in this regard had been demonstrated by the endorsement of the National Labour Migration Policy and the National Migration Policy. The minister said the policy recognised the challenges of migration in Nigeria, especially relating to smuggling and trafficking in persons and irregular migration. According to him, it addresses the benefits of migration and considers ways of maximising opportunities to use the huge remittance flows from the Diaspora. Sulaiman said the policy would also engage the skills, entrepreneurship, transnational transactions and ideas of the Diaspora. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/eu-says-more-nigerian-professionals-in-europe-than-in-nigeria/ |

A 65-year old German woman has given birth to quadruplets after undergoing artificial insemination procedure, Germany’s RTL television reported. The report said Annegret Raunigk had three boys and a girl by Caesarean section at a Berlin hospital during the week. They were born prematurely at 26 weeks, but have a good chance of surviving. Annegret Raunigk, who already has 13 children and seven grandchildren, is the world’s oldest woman to have quadruplets. The single mother reportedly decided to try for another baby, when her youngest daughter, who is now 10, said she wanted a little brother or sister. Ms. Raunigk’s pregnancy has been the subject of fierce debate in Germany, the BBC in Berlin stated. During her pregnancy, she said she believed everyone should be able to live the life they want. Asked whether she had any concerns, Ms. Raunigk said she assumed she would stay fit and healthy and that she was not worried about what other people thought. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/german-woman-delivers-quadruplets/ |
Few hours after a protest by suspected hired youths on Friday for the chairman of Etsako West local government, Hassa Kadiri, to step down as the council boss due to ill health, the ailing chairman passed away. The youths were said to have stormed the secretariat with placards and disrupted activities, saying the ill health of the late council boss was slowing down development of the area. Some of the youths that protested alleged to be students of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, have been arrested by the police while others escaped. But the presence of the school’s Students Union Government (SUG) official vehicle has led to the querying of the president Sani Abdulqadiri, as the Public Relation Officer of the institution, Oshiobugie Mustapha, said the school was on holiday and that any student caught protesting should be prosecuted. According to him, “the school is on holiday, we are resuming on May 24. The vehicle belonging to SUG was found at the scene of the protest. He should explain how the vehicle got there.” The Guardian gathered at the secretariat that the Vice Chairman of the council, Alasa Idaro, might have sponsored the protest. The late Kadiri was aged 54 and died of undisclosed ailmen http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/edo-council-chairman-dies-after-step-down-protest/ |

The arson took place at about 2am in spite of the dusk to dawn curfew imposed by Governor Ayodele Fayose on Thursday. Interestingly, the market, which is populated by people of different ethnic groups, predominantly Yoruba, is directly opposite the king’s palace. As of press time, the police had yet to announce any arrest made in connection with the arson. Traders cried uncontrollably on Friday, lamenting the loss of goods estimated to be worth several millions of Naira. Security agencies had taken over the place on Wednesday to prevent the fight between the two groups from escalating. Residents and workers living along Odo-Ado, Ajilosun-Ikere Road woke up to see thick smoke rising from the market. Most schools in the city shut their gates to pupils while those that opened for the day before getting to know about the crisis had to hurriedly send pupils back home. The panic message also got to banks and other commercial offices, which also shut their doors to customers. Men of the state fire service had difficulty putting out the fire while major streets in the capital city were deserted as news of the crisis spread. Truckloads of mobile and regular policemen as well as soldiers were immediately drafted on the orders of the state government to prevent escalation of the crisis and prevent massive looting. The State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, who personally led a security team that included the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Etop James, to the scene, expressed worry at the turn of events. Fayose ordered that four buses belonging to the state government be immediately mobilised to evacuate all Hausa residents (including women and children) in the city to an area called ‘Shasha’ along Ado-Ekiti/Ikere-Ekiti Road. Many of the Hausa people that had been moved to the Mobile Police unit near the old Governor’s office were still being evacuated as of the time of filing this report. Fayose said the Hausa community would be at the new location for the time being, and would be heavily guarded by security operatives. The new CP told journalists in a separate interview that the police were on top of the situation, saying his men had been working tirelessly since the incident occurred. The police boss warned trouble makers to steer clear of the state while law abiding residents should conduct their daily businesses without any fear. The crisis started in the night of Tuesday when a bag belonging to the wife of a chieftain of the transport workers’ union was snatched by unknown persons at Ijigbo-Old Garage area of the city. It was learnt that the victim was allegedly raped by the assailants after dispossessing her of her belongings, a development that irked the drivers. An eye witness said the victim’s husband reported the matter to members of the union after futile efforts to know the identities of the perpetrators. http://www.punchng.com/news/ekiti-crisis-50-shops-two-houses-burnt/ |

Houses in Ado Ekiti https://punch.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Scene-of-the-incident-in-Ekiti-360x225.jpg FOURTEEN people were killed in separate violence that rocked Ekiti, Plateau and Benue states on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Three of the deaths were recorded in Ado Ekiti during a clash between transport workers and Hausa traders while six were in Plateau State where gunmen invaded four villages in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The third incident which was also by gunmen left five persons dead in Jooter, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue state. The Ado Ekiti fracas was said to have started building up on Tuesday night when a bag belonging to the wife of a chieftain of the road transport workers was snatched by unknown persons along the ever-busy Ijigbo-Old Garage area of the city. The victim was also allegedly raped, a development that irked the drivers who, engaged the Hausa in a fre-for-all in Erekesan Market, Oja Oba in the state capital. An eyewitness said the victim’s husband reported the matter to his colleagues after his efforts to identify the perpetrators failed. He added that butchers who, are mainly Yoruba, fought on the side of the Hausa against the transport workers whom they accused of undue harassment and unprovoked attacks. “The fighting was made worse by hoodlums who joined the transport workers. They were fighting with guns, bottles, charms, clubs, cutlasses and knives. At least three people died. Some were also injured,” he told one of our correspondents. Our correspondent in the state reported that the violence spread from the market – Old Garage – Mugbagba axis of the city to Atikankan area, a converging point for many Hausa traders in the state. As of the time of filing this report, Ajilosun, Okeyinmi, Okesha and Irona were no-go areas . According to our correspondent, the hoodlums vandalised many vehicles and set many shops at the Erekesan Market ablaze after looting them . Banks and other business outlets operating in the city were forced to shut down to avoid being looted by the hoodlums. Sunday Adigun, a cameraman with the Core TV, who was beaten to a pulp, had his camera smashed for trying to cover the fighting which was hijacked by hoodlums. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, did not confirm the deaths but he said that four persons wounded during the fracas were taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. The state new Commissioner of Police, Etop James, who spoke with residents of the affected areas, expressed regrets over the incident and promised to restore normalcy in the city. Our correspondent in Plateau State gathered that the attack on the four villages in Barkin LGA – Jong, Lobirin, Rabuk and Zim – was a reprisal by some armed youths for similar incidents in some Fulani communities. Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Abu, who confirmed the attack, said no arrest had been made. Abu added that the Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Oki, had ordered the redeployment of more policemen in the LGA to prevent further attacks. He urged the affected communities to remain calm and report any suspicious movement to the police. The PUNCH gathered in Benue State that about 10 gunmen in a Toyota vehicle shot sporadically at people at a drinking spot in Jooter, Ukum LGA, killing five of them. The gunmen were said to be looking for a target who was said to have gone to the place to have a drink. An eyewitness who did not want his name in print said that the “target” was among the injured. The state Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Austin Ezeani, who confirmed the incident, said that three people were killed and five critically injured. http://www.punchng.com/news/14-killed-in-ekiti-plateau-benue-mayhem/ |
